What’s a NAS?A Brief History
• Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices started as easy additional shared storage space for businesses.
• A dedicated hard disk-based storage technology designed to be connected directly to a network.
• Provides centralized data access to multiple network clients.
• Over time they have gotten smaller in size and price.
• Home and business networks can take advantage of their features.
Netgear purchased Infrant Technologies in 2008 and obtained their successful “ReadyNAS” line.

• NAS devices achieve more client operating system independence than servers by hiding their OS personality.
• They do run their own operating systems, but unlike Windows, UNIX and Novell file servers, they don’t demand specific client-side protocol support.

• RAID stands for “Redundant Array of Independent Disks”.
• Raid arrays allow multiple individual hard disks to be combined to perform as if they were one larger disk & data is spread and replicated across multiple disks.
• This reduces the risk of losing all data if one fails.
• One drive fails, you’ll have all your data on the second; without RAID data will be unrecoverable unless seeing a specialized firm.

• DAS, or “Direct Attached Storage”, such as USB and Firewire drives has its place, but not the versatility of the NAS.
• A DAS cannot be directly and simultaneously accessed by other machines.
• A DAS device is completely reliant on the host computer, hence, DAS can be an effective option for an individual computer user, but difficult to manage for multiple users.
For multiple computers or networks, NAS is more efficient, safer and easier to manage.
