For effective reading to occur,

one must be able to call words and understandtheir meaning.

Oral Reading

Oral reading can:(a) serve as an evaluative check on bottom-up processingskills,

(b) double as a pronunciation check.

(C) oral reading is not a very authentic language activity;

Silent reading techniques

You dont need to pronounce each word to

yourself.

Try to visually perceive more than one word at

a time, preferably phrases.

Unless a word is absolutely crucial to globalunderstanding, skip over it and try to infer its

meaning through its context.

y Reading and comprehending is the conscious effort of

one to call words and understand the intendedmeaning whether it be by reading aloud, using thepunctuation, answering questions while reading,underlining key words, etc.

Skimming

y Skimming occurs when the reader intentionallylooks over the material searching for details

pertaining to the plot or the purpose of theselection.

These details are necessary to understand the overallgist of the selected reading.

Scanning

Scanning is to search for some particular

piece or pieces of information in a text.

GuessingGuess the meaning of a word;

Guess a grammatical relationship;Infer implied meaning (between the lines);

Guess about a cultural reference and

Guess content messages.

Recognizing grammatical and semantic

contexts .
