Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) The Madonna of Bruges, 1504Church of Our Lady Bruges

The man who would later become pope Pius III commissioned Michelangelo in 1501 to create a set of 15 sculptures for the Siena cathedral. Michelangelo accepted but soon started to argue with the commissioner and never finished the assignment. This finished sculpture was acquired in 1504 by a merchant from the prosperous Flemish city of Bruges
