Effective teachers use the quantitative foundation of Reading Plus® to: build intrinsic motivation in students through personal recognition build class-wide excitement through class-wide contests and awards. Intrinsic Motivation Students develop intrinsic motivation when: they appreciate the personal benefits of improving their reading proficiency they see the levels of improvement as attainable and the goals as clear they receive personal recognition that matches their accomplishments. Effective teachers take sufficient time to build appreciation, to assure students that “they can do it,” and to give recognition daily, weekly, and monthly. They see this as their most important role! Basic Unit of Activity The basic unit of activity is completion of Guided Reading™ lessons with a comprehension of 70% or higher. Struggling students especially benefit from recognition of this accomplishment on a daily basis. Having students fill out daily record sheets, as shown at right, heightens their sense of ownership for their own results and provides a convenient method for daily review and recognition. Basic Unit of Accomplishment The basic unit of accomplishment is successful completion of content levels in Guided Reading™. This results in a level (or sub-level) award. While the system presents the award to the student on screen, it is personal recognition that builds intrinsic motivation! The system notifies teachers and makes it easy for them to print all awards each week and to personally distribute them with congratulations! Widening the Circle of RecognitionTeachers can take full advantage of student accomplishments by:

• building a wall of achievement, as shown at left• having the principal or AP hand out awards• sending a copy of awards home to parents/guardians (along with a short explanation of the award and of Reading Plus®)• recognizing students during morning announcements.

The best Reading Plus® teachers recognize motivation as their most important role and bring creativity and resourcefulness to the task of making reading practice challenging and exciting for every student every day!

Class-Wide Contests and RewardsClass-wide and school-wide contests can build teamwork, heighten student feelings of accomplishment, and make reading practice fun. Starting from the basic units, teachers can build activities that are crafted to match the grade level and circumstances of their own classes.

• Print the Class Status Report at the end of each week. Use each student’s Sessions Completed and Average Comprehension for the last 7 days as the basis for establishing weekly goals and rewards.

• As class members complete lessons successfully, an item (ticket or marble) is placed in a jar. When fi lled, the class receives a reward.

• Links are added to a colored paper chain every time a student earns 70% or higher. When it reaches the fl oor or has a specifi ed number of links, the class receives a reward.

• Students place stickers on a wall chart after each successful lesson. When the entire chart is fi lled, the class receives a reward.

• Students are given tickets each time they complete a lesson successfully. These can be used to redeem age-appropriate prizes from a school store or they can be entered in a weekly raffl e where one student’s name is pulled at random and awarded a prize.
