Why is reading for pleasure important?

• ‘There is a positive link between positive attitudes to reading and scoring well on reading assessments.’ (Twist, 2007)

• ‘Reading enjoyment has been reported as more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio‐economic status.’  (OECD, Reading for Change)

Why is reading for pleasure important?

• ‘Regularly reading stories or novels outside of school is associated with higher scores in reading assessments.’ (PIRLS, 2006, PISA, 2009)

• ‘Parents and the home environment are essential to the early teaching of reading and fostering a love of reading; children are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued.’ (Clark and Rumbold, 2006)

1. Get to know

children’sliterature

What did you read as a child? What are your reading memories?

Take a picture book….• What do the words tell you?• What do the images tell you?• What do the characters’ posture/ expression tell you?• What do the colours contribute to the meaning?• Is there anything you particularly like/ dislike about the 

double page spread?• How does it make you feel?  How does it do that?• What questions would you like to ask the picture book 

maker?• What music would you choose to accompany this spread?

2. Bathe them in books!

3. Share your own reading and enthusiasm

• What have you read recently that has been memorable or valuable to you?

• What do you know about yourself as a reader?

• To what extent do you share the above with your children?

4. Hear your child read and/or…?

• What else might you do?

4. Examine your prejudices!
