Thunder Claps LONG TIME, NO SEE: This series is Trenton’s first matchup with Reading this season. This marks the latest into a season that the two teams have met for the first time since 2013, when the Thunder and Phils did not face off until July 4 in Trenton. The Thunder and Fightins last met Labor Day weekend 2018, with the Thunder sweeping the regular season-ending four-game series at ARM & HAMMER Park, including an Eastern Division-clinching win on September 2. NO-NO ALERT: Monday’s combined no-hitter between Deivi Garcia, Domingo Acevedo, and Daniel Alvarez was the fourth nine- inning no-hitter in Thunder franchise history and the sixth no-hitter in the Eastern League this season (Binghamton, Erie 2x, Harrisburg, Portland). The last Thunder no-hitter had come on September 8, 2017, when Justus Sheffield and Taylor Widener combined to no-hit Binghamton in Game 3 of the Eastern Division Championship Series. PROTECT THE FORTRESS: The Thunder are 25-10 (.714) at home this season, the best home record in the Eastern League and the second-best among all full-season teams in Minor League Baseball; only the California League’s Visalia Rawhide (29-8, .784) boast a better home record. FUN FACT: Of the 11 series played against Eastern Division opponents this season, the Thunder have lost just two. RESURGENT RUTA: Ben Ruta has hit .300 over his last eight games, raising his batting average to .287, sixth-best in the Eastern League. The Mercer County native led the league in hitting for the first month-and-a-half of the season and is still tied for sixth-most hits with 68. HOLD ON LOOSELY: Shortstop Kyle Holder is batting .365 over his last 17 games, hitting safely in 14 of the 17. The San Diego, California native’s current 13-game on-base streak is the team’s longest active streak and matches Ben Ruta (13 games from April 17- May 6) for the team’s longest on-base streak of the season. ONLY SHOOTIN’ STARS BREAK THE MOLD: This afternoon, five Thunder players were named Eastern League all-stars: pitchers Daniel Alvarez and Deivi Garcia, infielders Chris Gittens and Hoy Jun Park, and outfielder Ben Ruta. The five selections are tied for second-most from any one team; only Richmond (6) is sending more. It is the first mid-season all-star selection for four of the five Thunder players selected; Park earned an all-star nod for Single-A Charleston in 2017. WHO THEY ARE: Of the 25 players on the Thunder roster, 14 were drafted by the Yankees, nine were signed as minor league or international free agents, and two were acquired via trade. Sixteen of the 25 played under Patrick Osborn at High-A Tampa at some point in 2018. E.L.
