• The informal assessment is at a 2nd Grade reading comprehension level.

• Modifications were needed to get an accurate assessment.

• I will be demonstrating 3 different types of modifications for students at different levels.

Modifications• Always focus on what you are testing for! For example, If

you are testing for a reading comprehension level you can modify how the student answers the questions. This still provides you with the correct assessment level.

• For a student who may have frustrations with writing or difficulty with fine motor skills you can switch the written section to multiple choice or a fill in the blank.

• For students who have visual difficulties you could highlight pertinent information and increase the font size.

• These simple modifications help eliminate high frustration levels which could lead to behavioral problems causing inaccurate assessment scores.

Modification #1

Fill-In The Blank

By creating a simple fill-in the blank you provide choices which makes scanning the paragraph easier and helps reduce the amount a students needs to write.

I created dark lines between each question helping organize the information for the student.

Theses simple modifications can help eliminate frustration and provide visual support allowing teachers to get accurate assessment scores.

Modification #2

Multiple Choice

By creating simple multiple choice questions you make it easier for the student to scan the paragraph for answers and it eliminates writing all together.

This format is more organized and less threatening for those students that need extra visual support and organization.

Theses simple modifications can help eliminate frustration and provide visual support allowing teachers to get accurate assessment scores.

Modification #3Highlight Pertinent

Information

Modifications have been made on both the reading passage and the question page. By highlighting pertinent information you help students weed out the information that is not needed. I also increased the size of the font and decreased the size of the picture.

These modification are very helpful for older students who can not weed out unimportant information. For example a 7th grade science text. You still want them to understand the main information but the little details are not as important.

These modification provide visual support and help students scan for the correct information.

Modification #3

Highlight Pertinent Information

On this page the highlighted areas (colors) match the highlighted areas of the passage. This again helps with scanning and weeding out unimportant information. It also provides organization and visual support.

This can also be done with the other two modifications. For example, highlighting and fill-in the blank.

Again, make sure you change the directions when needed.

Other Possible Modifications• Put the reading passage on the same page as the questions.

Some students have difficulty transferring from one page to the next. For longer passages, split them up into paragraphs. Then add questions under each paragraph.

• Eliminate the amount of questions. Some students get overwhelmed by the amount of questions. Have them complete 2 questions one day and 3 the next. Whatever they can handle.

• Remember try to eliminate frustrations so that you can get a true assessment level! Focus on what you are assessing and what that means. Eliminating writing is not going to change the student comprehension level….it only changes his writing level. So if you are assessing writing you would not eliminate writing….etc.

• Also remember visual supports and organizational strategies also help reduce frustration.
