• We served 26,707 students—an increase of 8.8% over 2014.

• RICP®, our flagship retirement income program, saw student enrollment grow to 8,533.

• Our first PhD students are moving into the dissertation phase of their work.

• Total scholarships awarded through the Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs exceeded $1 million.

• We received nearly $9 million in charitable gifts and pledges, including a pledge for the largest gift in

the history of The American College of Financial Services.

To say I am proud to lead this institution is an understatement, but the real joy for me during my first full

year in this role has come from the relationships those of us at The College enjoy with so many exceptional

individuals. The American College of Financial Services is about heritage and about people like you who

care deeply about this profession. I had the privilege of meeting with students, alumni, and friends at events

across the country, such as the President’s Tour, the Knowledge Summit and Alumni LIVE. Their pride in our

institution was palpable, and they were eager to share that enthusiasm with me. They also shared the kinds

of successes that matter most—stories about how they are putting knowledge gained through The College’s

offerings to work in their communities. One by one, they are elevating the financial services profession, most

often by building sustainable advantages for their clients.

This year reminded me that The American College of Financial Services is much more than the programs we

offer. There is a sense of ongoing, important work—work that matters now and matters across generations.

The torch is passed to us for a while, and we are responsible for nurturing the flame until we are ready to pass

a stronger torch to the next generation of leaders. This is our time, and I want to thank you for partnering with

us at this important moment as we strengthen that flame together.

There are so many highlights from 2015 that make this flame even brighter. The record-breaking RICP®

designation, for example, is part of a bigger retirement planning success story that we are featuring in this

Annual Report. I also encourage you to read about a transformative gift from philanthropist Cary M. Maguire

and the appointment of Michael Finke, PhD, CFP®, a nationally renowned educator and researcher, to the role

of Dean and Chief Academic Officer.

Another significant accomplishment in 2015 was our increased commitment to working constructively with

other organizations in the profession. We held a national web event on retirement planning with the Society of

Financial Service Professionals, have instituted content partnerships with AALU and GAMA International, and

are partnering with FPA, WIFS, and other groups. We are truly better together in making a positive impact on

the profession!

Dear Friend,

By just about any measure, 2015 was an

extremely successful year for The American

College of Financial Services thanks in large

part to the consistent commitment of you

and our many other supporters.

We plan to expand upon 2015 successes, with alumni networking opportunities across the

country. Collaborative initiatives and events with partner organizations will increase. As a

follow-up to last year’s Knowledge Summit, which brought together a record 3,500 alumni

in Honolulu, be sure to look for details in coming months on our 2017 Knowledge Summit,

which will take place in the Bahamas.

Media interest in The American College of Financial Services was outstanding in 2015. Many

of our faculty, who are sought-after experts in various disciplines, averaged multiple media

contacts per week. This resulted in high-profile coverage in a variety of outlets, from Barron’s

and Fortune to The New York Times. Our professors are also regular contributors to widely read

publications such as Forbes, Investment News and The Wall Street Journal. Research conducted

by our faculty also appears in high-profile academic and practitioner journals such as the

Journal of Financial Planning, Journal of Portfolio Management and The Journal of Financial Services

Professionals. All this raises the visibility of The American College of Financial Services and the

excellent work going on here. I am sure the visibility of The College will continue to grow,

along with our reputation, in 2016.

These are exciting times for The American College of Financial Services, and I am confident

2016 will be another great year. Together we will continue to expand The College’s footprint—

professionalizing financial services, and taking advantage of opportunities to bring our

respected knowledge, ethics, experience, and leadership into other financial services sectors.

At the end of the day, it is all about the people by our side, and those we serve. You simply

cannot find a finer group of people than our staff, students, and supporters like you. It is a

privilege to serve as President and CEO.

Warm regards,

Robert R. Johnson, PhD, CFA®, CAIA®

2015 was an amazing year at The American College of

Financial Services, which elevated its status as the national

leader in retirement-focused research and education.

The College’s star-studded team of retirement experts

celebrated many notable achievements, including one that

starts with an impressive number: 3,894. That is how many

individuals enrolled in 2015 to become a Retirement Income

Certified Professional® (RICP®). That is an average

of 10 new students every day.

These numbers reflect a growing appreciation among

financial services professionals that The College is the

source for the latest thinking and techniques to serve their

clients’ changing financial needs. The RICP® success also

exemplifies the remarkable work being done at The College—

strengthening its reputation as the go-to retirement income

resource, and leading national conversations about this

important subject.

With an estimated 10,000 Americans reaching retirement

age every day for the next 16 years, advisor education is a

critical need in the retirement income planning profession.

The American College of Financial Services remains

committed to developing and delivering innovative programs

that meet the needs of the changing financial landscape

and enable advisors to access the latest research-supported

knowledge about the complexities of retirement.

“I am very proud of what we are accomplishing,” said

Robert R. Johnson, PhD, CFA®, CAIA®, President and CEO

of The American College of Financial Services. “We have

a wonderful team, including faculty, staff, and external

friends who are passionate supporters. Their generosity and

commitment have enabled us to build a strong pracademic

(combined academic and practitioner) foundation, upon

which we are now building expertise in specialized disciplines

like retirement income planning.”

Johnson recalls being extremely impressed when he was

hired as president in late 2014. He found a synergistic

confluence of top-flight talent at The College. At the

same time, the importance of retirement income planning

continued to grow as a hot topic across the country. As the

retirement landscape has changed with the shift to defined

contribution plans, the reduction in employer-provided

benefits and the challenging low-interest investment

environment, everyone from financial advisors and their

clients to economists and the media realize the need for

better strategies, tools, and training.

“There was, and still is, a crying need in the economy

for better retirement income planning,” Johnson added.

“There is a retirement crisis in this country. The baby

boomer demographics, combined with advances in medical

science, mean we have more people living longer than ever.

They need specialized help with decisions that can really

impact the quality of life in retirement.”

The collaborative environment at The American College of

Financial Services has helped fuel successes in the specialized

retirement field. According to Professor of Taxation David

Littell, JD, ChFC®, there were 56 practitioners, academics

and experts across the profession who helped to build

the RICP® program. Faculty continues to update the

curriculum to reflect the latest thinking and meet current

needs among financial service professionals. Feedback

Leading The Way Through The National Retirement Crisis

“Overall, it was an inspiring program. I was extremely impressed. The American College of Financial Services has taken a lead in the field. They do a great job of educating the public, not just the students.

from RICP® students has been

extremely positive, with many

reporting that learned strategies

and tools were immediately useful

in their practice. Littell, who is

Co-Director of the New York Life

Center for Retirement Income,

said 2015 highlights include many

joint retirement-focused research

projects among The College’s

centers of excellence.

“We did a joint research project

with the Cary M. Maguire Center

for Ethics in Financial Services on

ethical issues facing advisors when

working with older clients,” he

explained. “We also started a project with the State Farm

Center for Women and Financial Services and LIMRA that

will focus on widows and their decision to either stay with or

leave the financial advisor with whom they had been working

with while they were married.”

Reportedly, 70 percent of women switch financial advisors

within a few years of their husband’s death. This study will

explore the dynamics of widow-advisor relationships in order

to gain a clear understanding of the motivations behind this

decision. “Women have longer life expectancies, and will

be the beneficiaries of a large wealth transfer from their

husbands and parents,” said Assistant Professor of Women’s

Studies Jocelyn D. Wright, MBA, CFP®. “Yet women are

further behind with retirement readiness than men. So their

need to be prepared is even greater.”

Another important research initiative is being led by

Associate Professor of Taxation Jamie Hopkins, JD, MBA,

CLU®, ChFC®, RICP®, co-director of the New York Life

Center for Retirement Income and the Larry R. Pike Chair

in Insurance and Investments at The College. He is working

to identify effective uses of home equity for retirement

income planning. “While there are a variety of ways to utilize

home equity as part of a retirement income plan, reverse

mortgages deserve special attention and consideration,”

Hopkins said. “Unfortunately, many people hold strong

reservations about reverse mortgages. It is a financial tool

that is often misunderstood both by consumers and by

financial service professionals. Greenwald and Associates

is helping us gather consumer data on reverse mortgages,”

Hopkins continued.

“The Longevity Funding Taskforce

chaired by Shelley Giordano has

also been involved with helping us

in the reverse mortgage research

world.”

“The American College of Financial

Services is well-positioned to be

a leading authority on reverse

mortgages,” remarked Wade Pfau,

PhD, CFA®, an award-winning

researcher and Professor of

Retirement Income. “I think it’s

the next hot topic.”

Pfau, a top-tier retirement

income expert, is one of many

faculty who helped to bring the

national spotlight to The College in 2015 through numerous

publications in academic journals and popular media such as

the Wall Street Journal and Forbes. He has gained wide praise

for his voluminous research, including his work examining

“the 4 percent rule” for annual retirement withdrawals,

which he criticized for a number of reasons, including the

difficulty of sustaining a 4 percent withdrawal rate in light of

today’s low-interest-rate environment.

Pfau, who works closely with The College’s PhD students,

said retirement income planning requires different skills

and tools than those used in the accumulation phase. The

aim of the PhD and RICP® programs is to equip students

to meet the needs of an increasing number of clients who

are preparing for their retirement years. These students

embody The College’s longstanding commitment to the

advancement of professionalism and innovation in financial

services and, by extension, the increased financial security of

all Americans. Pfau said he is excited to see the first cohort

of PhD students, who recently finished their comprehensive

exams, begin their dissertation research. The first graduates

are expected early next year.

“The American College of Financial Services is really

becoming a dominant force in retirement income planning

education,” Pfau added.

TransformativeGift Philanthropist Cary M. Maguire, widely

known for his support of ethical research and

educational programs, has contributed a recent

and transformative gift of $5 million to The

American College of Financial Services. This gift

will serve as a stimulus to upgrade the academic

facilities of The College.

To date, Maguire has donated a total of $7.8

million to The College, having previously

contributed for the establishment of fellowships

in applied ethics and for the endowment of the

Center for Ethics in Financial Services, which bears

his name. This magnificent gift provides a major

source of funding for The College’s envisioned

growth of its renowned programs and services.

“It is gratifying when one of our leading

supporters is moved by the quality work our

faculty and professional staff provides,” said

Dr. Robert R. Johnson, President and CEO of The American College of Financial Services. “Cary’s dedication to the study of

ethics in business and financial services is evident through his philanthropy, and we are thrilled that our vision for the future

resonates with him.”

With Maguire’s contribution, The American College of Financial Services has already begun to explore its options for

expanded space. Students will benefit from a state-of-the-art facility that will attract and retain the best and brightest

faculty and professional staff, provide the latest in educational technology for both distance and on-site learning, reach a

new generation of financial advisors and extend its extraordinary intellectual bandwidth through a tangible presence in the

For nearly two decades, James A. Mitchell, CLU®, ChFC®, a member of the Board of Trustees,

along with his wife Linda, have provided remarkable support to The American College of

Financial Services and, in particular, to ethics education. Ten years ago, they generously provided

funds to create the James A. and Linda R. Mitchell Forum on Ethical Leadership in Financial

Services. Their generosity continued in 2014 when Jim and Linda informed The College of their

intended gift of $4 million through their estate in the support of the Cary M. Maguire Center for

Ethics in Financial Services. Jim, a longtime friend of Mr. Maguire, honored Mr. Maguire’s gift

by notifying The College that we will receive $1 million of their bequest during their lifetime to

support the institution’s plans to expand its facilities.

Eileen C. McDonnell, Chairman and Chief Executive

Officer of Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company,

named the 2015 recipient of the Huebner Gold Medal

at the annual President’s Dinner on November 20.

“Eileen has been an advocate for continuing education and

an outstanding industry leader for many years,” said Dr.

Robert R. Johnson, President and CEO of The American

College of Financial Services. “She was instrumental in

creating educational content and programming as the first

holder of the State Farm Chair in Women and Financial

Services at The College. She was also a faculty member of

profession, as Dean and Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Finke, a

professor and Director of Retirement Planning and Living in

the Department of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech

University will assume his duties this summer. He brings

to The American College of Financial Services more than

a decade of experience in academic leadership, and a

national reputation as one of the foremost thought

leaders in his field.

“What Dr. Finke offers—a commitment to world-class

research and innovative ideas that solve practical problems in

the financial planning profession—will be transformative for

The American College of Financial Services,” said President

and CEO, Dr. Robert Johnson.

Among the most prolific authors in financial planning

journals, Dr. Finke has published more than 50 peer-reviewed

articles. He has also been widely quoted in many of the

nation’s leading consumer publications, including The Wall

Street Journal, The New York Times, Time, and Money Magazine.

His research questioning the “4 percent rule” in the Journal

of Financial Planning with The College’s professor, Dr. Wade

Pfau, won the 2014 Montgomery Warschauer Award for the

most influential article in the Journal of Financial Planning. Dr.

Finke was also selected to present his research on financial

literacy and aging at the 2015 MIT Center for Finance and

Policy conference.

In addition to conducting research and advising students,

Dr. Finke writes the monthly “Finke on Finance” column

for Research Magazine in which he uses research to help

professionals understand timely industry topics. He has also

worked on white paper research projects for companies

including Northwestern Mutual, OneAmerica, MetLife, the

Society of Actuaries, and TIAA-CREF.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my job as an

academician is my ability to work with the many professionals

in this industry who are dedicated to creating better

products and processes, and to help bridge the communities

of academics and financial advisors,“ Finke said.

Dr. Finke received a doctorate in consumer economics from

The Ohio State University in 1998 and in finance from the

University of Missouri in 2011. He also served as the director

of graduate studies at the University of Missouri. Since 2006,

Dr. Finke has directed the PhD program at the Texas Tech

Trailblazer Maxine Niemeyer, MSM, MSFS, CLU®, ChFC®, died May 29, 2015. Niemeyer

entered the financial services field early in her working career. In 1964, at a time when

few women were part of the profession, she earned her CLU® designation from what is

now The American College of Financial Services. She rose quickly through the ranks of

Detroit’s Business & Estate Financial Coordinators, Inc., becoming a top producer and

then president. Niemeyer went on to serve for over 20 years as the Michigan brokerage

agency manager for Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance.

When the ChFC® designation was developed, Ms. Niemeyer was a student in one

of the first classes to earn that designation. She valued the singular education she

received at The College, as noted in her own words, “In the 70s, our country went

through tremendous problems caused by excessive inflation. The American College

of Financial Services helped me keep up with the subsequent economic changes by

creating and offering the ChFC® courses and designations... Our society is characterized

by a better informed consumer and a significantly more complex and competitive

financial environment. Now more than ever, the CLU® and ChFC® designations make a

difference!”

Maxine Niemeyer became the first woman elected to The American College of Financial

Services Board of Trustees in 1981. The trustees honored her in 1994 with the Solomon

S. Huebner Gold Medal, The College’s highest honor. Niemeyer also served as a leader

on several other boards and received well-deserved recognition over her long career in

the industry.
