S tanford Goldberg was a very humble man. During his formative years, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe as an Officer

and Navigator and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Business. He lived out his life as a bachelor, and was very close to his sister Cecelia and his nephew Mark. Stan was a very involved member at the Congregation Beth Israel and dedicated many years to the congregation serving as their Adult Education Committee Chair. His dear friend and former Rabbi, Raphael Ostrovsky, remembers Stan as, “a man of courage, determination, integrity and generosity of spirit.” Members of the congregation who came to know him remember him as an educator with good ideas and the ability to motivate others to learn and appreciate their Jewish traditions.

During Stan’s lifetime, he saved a portion of his earnings with the inten-tion of leaving something behind for charitable purposes. And he did just that. Stan passed away in 2013 at the age of 93 and designated a certain amount of his estate to be given to charity. Rather than mandating specific charities to receive his funds, Stan left the decision on who would benefit from his generosity to his executors, his close friend and Rabbi and his nephew Mark. Together Rabbi Ostrovsky and Mark chose organi-zations they felt had high standards and were making a difference in the community. They also chose mission-driven charities they thought Stan would be proud to support. Hospice of the Calumet Area was one of those organizations and is very appreciative to be the recipient of a gener-ous gift from the Stan Goldberg estate and to be part of Stan’s legacy.

Message from the Executive Director...

T his year, Hospice of the Calumet Area (HCA) marks 35 years of

caring for individuals and families throughout Lake, Porter, Will and Cook counties. As we commemo-rate this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to providing the highest quality of care for those with life-limiting illnesses and helping them make every day matter.

This was our commitment when we became the first hospice in Northwest IN back in 1981, in 1989 when we began caring for patients in IL, when we opened the area’s first freestanding hospice house in 1997, and when we began providing care for those not yet ready for hospice through our free Transitions program in 2000. The ex-pansion of our Healing Hearts grief support program to Healing Hearts for Kids and in 2010, Healing Hearts for Teens, reflects our commitment to care for all age groups. This year we will be opening an office in Porter, IN to facilitate serving that community with the high quality of hospice care HCA is known for providing.

Just as we have over the past 35 years, HCA’s mission of improving the quality of life through compassionate care for individuals and families facing life-limiting illness re-mains constant. In 2015, HCA was recognized as a Hos-pice Honors recipient; a prestigious program that recog-nizes hospices providing the highest level of satisfaction from the caregiver’s point of view. In addition, 99% of those responding to our family satisfaction survey in 2015 stated they would recommend our care.

HCA has had a significant local impact on the lives of over 17,000 individuals and families. HCA offers so much more than many realize: comfort when a cure isn’t possi-ble, expert medical care, control of pain and other symp-toms, independence for as long as possible, your best quality of life, a peaceful death and support for family through the entire process and beyond.

Whether you are part of our team, a friend or family member who tells someone about our programs, a medi-cal professional who helps people learn about hospice care or if you attend one of our events or simply send a kind word, you are making a real difference. While Stan decided to leave his charitable giving choices up to a trusted friend and family member, he could have also made those choices himself during his lifetime. Most of us aspire to leave a positive mark on this world, leaving a gift to an organization you believe in is one way of doing just that. Stan Goldberg will be remembered as a giving person who devoted time to his community. Through his estate gifts, he is still making a difference and you can too.

Leave a legacy through estate giving plans

I f you are thinking about how you can help ensure that Hospice of the Calumet Area has a secure future, main-

taining its programs and services for years to come, below are a variety of ways you can include HCA in your estate plans:

Wills Gift a percentage of estate assets or a specific sum of money to Hospice of the Calumet Area in your will.

Life Insurance Complete a “change of beneficiary form” for an existing policy. Transfer ownership of an existing policy or purchase a new policy and make Hospice of the Calumet Area the owner and irrevocable beneficiary.

Retirement Funds Complete a “change of beneficiary form” for your retirement fund naming Hospice of the Calumet Area as a partial or sole beneficiary.

Outright Gifts Gifts of cash or other assets, such as appreciated securities, (any amount) can be contributed to support current or fu-ture need.

Cash gifts can also help build our Endowment Fund held at the Legacy Foundation.

We encourage you to discuss these issues with your own attorney or financial advisor. Friends of Hospice Members Honored at Fall Luncheon Nearly 400 individuals from the Northwest Indiana professional and civic community attended the Friends of Hospice Fall Luncheon Mum’s the Word held on Wednesday, October 14, at Avalon Manor. This exciting event included local vendor shopping, an impressive raffle, and a delightful lunch. A highlight of the luncheon was the special recognition of two Friends of Hospice members, Vicky Halkias and Pat McKinlay, who were honored for their outstanding volunteer contributions. Both women volunteer their time and talent through their involvement with the Friends and the Hospice Artisans, two community groups that focus on raising funds and awareness for Hospice of the Calumet Area Programs. The spirit of giving was alive, as the event itself raised more than $20,000 for patient care, family support, and other critical Hospice of the Calumet Area programs.

Jim Gaffigan Plays Sold Out Show Benefiting HCA

Jim Gaffigan came home to Northwest Indiana and partnered with his brother, Hospice of the Calumet Area Board Member, Mitch Gaffigan, to perform a special, one night stand-up comedy show to raise funds and kick-off the plans for Hospice of the Calumet Area to open a new location in Porter County. On Thursday, November 12, Jim performed to a sold out crowd at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso. Mitch and Jim’s parents held a true passion for the hospice organization as well as its mission, and instilled that belief in their children. Their mother, Marcia, was a founding mem-ber of the Friends of Hospice, and faithfully served as a member of the Friends until her death in 1990. Shortly after her passing,

her husband, Michael, joined the Board of Directors of HCA and served for six years until his death in 1999. The Gaffigan brothers have always wanted to do something to honor their parents’ philanthropic legacy and for a cause they also truly believe in. The event’s proceeds will support HCA’s charity care component and free pallia-tive program, Transitions™.

Knights of St. Florian make an impact while remembering one of their own

The American Catholic Union Lodge affiliated with St. George Catholic Church in Chicago organized a special fundraiser for Hospice of the Calumet Area. A past president of St. Florian Lodge #44 KSKJ was a patient at the William J. Riley Memorial Residence and as a result of the care he received, his fellow Lodge members expressed a desire to give back. The group organized an outing to a NWI casino for its mem-bers, who enjoyed an entertaining night out while knowing that they were also contributing to a worthy cause. Some members even expressed the desire to organize similar events weekly! Through these efforts, the Lodge proudly donated $2,500 to Hospice of the Calumet Area. Lodge Presi-dent, George Bozzetti stated, “Hospice does such good work and we are glad that we could do something to help continue this valuable service.”
