EDITOR’S LETTER

JUST A SMALL TOWN GIRL

...living in a lonely world, or so they say. Whoever “they” are.

I really am from a small town though, with too many bars, churches and tanning beds to count. As much as I

used to despise being from this tiny town I now appreciate being raised there. It taught me to be respectful of others and it

also taught me how to work hard. With this sense of pride for my small town and my ability to be a hard working woman the idea of Re: magazine was born. Growing up in such a sheltered town has increased my poor eating habits. My family is very set in their ways and frankly are scared of the change that is to come. They say things like, “it’s always those hoity-toity rich people going out and ruining the good ole’ American way for the rest of us,” or “can’t they just leave things be?”

Things like this cause me to ask myself how to teach them to become healthier without taking over their lives or seeming like a nuisance. My friends, family and I are all in need of a way to change our lives to a more sustainable one and Re: is a way to make that transition run as smooth as possible. THANKS FOR READING,

Routine

Chest to Thighs with Interlaced HandsStand at the back of your yoga mat with your feet together and carefully bow forward, hinging from your hips and not your low back. Reach your hands behind your back and interlace your fin-gers, pressing the palms together. Bend your knees and press your chest into and down your thighs, keeping your neck long. Hold for five breaths.

3Sundial SalutationWith feet hip-distance apart, fold forward and place your hands on your elbows. Bring your torso toward the outside of the right leg and open your chest so that your left elbow points up toward the sky. Moving like a sundial, lead with your left elbow and slowly come up the right side, reaching up at the top and then continue to lower down the left side, keeping the chest open and the shoulders down. Repeat 3 times on each side.

Open HipFrom Downward Facing Dog lift your right leg all the way up to the sky behind you. Keeping the arms very strong, bend your right knee and stack your right hip over your left, opening up the hip, groin and thigh. Gently press the left heel down into the earth, being mindful to keep that heel from splaying out to the side.

5Easy Lunge TwistStep your right foot to the outside of your right hand so that your right foot is closer to the right edge of the mat. Turn your toes out to a 45 degree angle (like 10:00). Keep the left knee lifted and press the thigh up towards the sky. Press down into the earth with the left hand and open the right arm up towards the sky. Stay here for at least five breaths.

Low Lunge VariationWith your right toes pointing straight ahead and the outer edge of the right foot parallel to the out-er edge of the mat, lower your left knee down to the earth. Place your hands on top of your right thigh or reach them up to the sky. Soften the tailbone down and draw the low belly off of the thigh. Stay here for five breaths allowing the right heel to energetically draw back and the left hip to energetically move down and forward towards the right heel.

8

Triangle PoseTuck the back toes under and spin the left heel down so that the heels are more or less in line with each other. Pressing down through the outer edge of the left foot, begin to straighten your right leg. Engage both legs and consider

stacking your left hip over your right. Slide your right hand as far up

your right leg as you need to so that you are not

collapsing anywhere. Open the left arm up

towards the sky, reaching out through the left fingertips.

Forearm PlankWith toes tucked, lower down onto your elbows and forearms. Keeping the hips in line with the shoulders and your knees off of the ground, stack your shoulders over your elbows, which should be no wider than shoulders distance apart. Keep the back of the thighs pressing up towards the sky, while guiding the heels back and the heart forward. Maintain a strong core and hold here for 30 seconds.

Malasana - Yogi SquatSeparate your feet a little bit further apart, maybe even as wide as your mat. Turn your toes out slightly. Bend your knees and lower your hips down towards the earth. Bring your hands to prayer in front of your heart and allow the elbows to gently guide the knees and thighs open, keeping length in the spine. Engage mula bandha to experience a greater sense of lightness. Stay here for at least five full breaths.

Worrying about being able to pay the bills? The babysitter canceled—again? Situations like these are the modern-day equivalent of being attacked by a saber-toothed tiger, and our bodies rev up to face the threats, says Paul J. Rosch, MD, president of the American Institute of Stress. Chronic stress can lead to a whole host of physical and emotional prob-lems. Plus, women often have stronger stress reactions than men, says David

Rakel, MD, director of integrative medicine at the University of Wisconsin, maybe because the area where emotions are processed in our brains is larger. Even more of a reason to ID your stress and learn to let it go.

HEADACHESResearchers once blamed tension headaches on tight muscles in the face and neck. But now they think that stress-induced fluc-tuations in neurotransmitters—like serotonin and endorphins—also activate pain pathways in the brain, leading to headaches. In either case, ouch!

Just 10 minutes a day of mindful relaxation—like deep breath-ing or meditation—can ease the muscle tension that can trigger a headache, says Lisa Corbin, MD, medical director of the Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Colorado Hospital. Try this: Sit in a quiet place, and close your eyes. Take a deep breath through your nose, and let it fill your abdomen; hold it for 5 seconds, then exhale. Studies have shown that simple, deep-breathing exercises like this reduce blood pressure and promote a sense of well-being.

BREAKOUTSA bad day really can go straight to your face: Chronic-stress hormones can increase oil production in skin glands. The result can be blemishes or full-blown acne. The Chinese tradition of drinking hot water with lemon helps detoxify your skin, says Susan Ciminelli, founder of Susan Ciminelli Day Spa in New York City. Also try slowly rubbing a dry loofah up your body, starting from the ankles. This helps blood circulate and is invigorating and calming, Ciminelli says.

STIFF NECKSometimes that pain in the neck from the office goes home with you in the form of sore, stiff muscles. After tensing up all day,

trigger points within the muscles can go into tiny spasms and cause intense neck cramps, integrative-medicine expert Da-vid Rakel, MD, says. Massage—from hot stones to ischemic-compression therapy, during which trigger points are probed—can help relax tight muscles in your neck or upper back, says Dr. Rakel. Or try Kneipp hydrotherapy:Sit in bathwater that’s as cold as you can tolerate, then warm up the water; alternate between cold and hot three to four times while soaking. You can also take a cold shower or splash cold water on sore muscles for 10 to 60 seconds; the dramatic change in temperature may constrict and open blood vessels, removing toxins like lactic acid and improving blood sup-ply and lymph flow, Dr. Rakel says. A recent study also showed that cold-water therapy can reduce fibromyalgia pain.

FATIGUEIf you can’t stop yawning, it’s prob-ably because you’ve spent hours in bed ruminating instead of sleeping. “There are wake-promoting regions of the brain that get stimulated by anxious thoughts,” says psychologist Stephanie Silberman, PhD, a diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and author of The Insomnia Workbook. Too many restless nights, and your days will be shot—memory is impaired and you may feel more irritable and moody. If stress is keeping you awake, practice “thought stopping,” says Silberman. “Picture an actual stop sign every time you start worrying.” Progressive muscle-relaxation is another anti-insomnia technique: Beginning at your toes, tighten the muscles in that area, hold for 5 seconds, then release; continue with each muscle group, go-ing up the length of your body. Breathe calmly throughout the exercise.

PERIOD PROBLEMS AND INFERTILITYBad cramps? No period? The reproduc-tive system is ground zero for stress in many women, says Anne Nedrow, MD, medical director of women’s primary care and integrative medicine at Oregon Health and Sciences University’s Center for Women’s Health. “Sometimes it starts when young women go off to college and have excessive bleeding or don’t bleed at all,” she says. There’s also a strong mind-body connection that can interfere with fertility and sexual function, Dr. Nedrow says.Acupuncture can help regulate periods, diminish pain, and improve pregnancy and birth rates in women having in vitro fertilization. “It’s thought to unblock cer-tain energy pathways,” says Dr. Nedrow.

WEIGHT GAINStress could be causing that upward tick in the numbers on your scale. Some stud-ies suggest that our stressed-out bodies are becoming immune to the continuous secretion of adrenaline. Instead of burn-ing more calories, our hyped-up systems produce more cortisol, a stress hormone that encourages the storage of fat. Add to that the fact that “some women overeat in times of stress,” says Los Angeles–based registered dietitian Deborah A. Klein, author of the forthcoming book The 200 Foods That Will Save Your Life. The stress-plus-increased-eating combo is like putting out a welcome mat for fat.Instead of snacking on junk food the next time you’re under pressure, take a good brisk walk. Studies say exercise relieves stress and burns calories.

HEALTH BUSTERStress weakens the immune system and worsens chronic conditions like asthma, high blood pressure, and diabetes,

says Robin Molella, MD, a preventive medicine specialist at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn.Laughing your way through shows like I Love Lucy or Saturday Night Live may hike your body’s natural disease-fighting cells or relieve tightness in your chest. Even “fake” laughter has been shown in brain scans to work, Dr. Molella says.

SORE SHOULDERSYour too-heavy purse could, indeed, be causing your sore shoulders—but hunch-ing over the computer or phone could also be the culprit. This position wreaks havoc on your posture and makes your head jut forward, creating an SOS situa-tion for shoulder and back muscles.Relax your shoulders and open your chest with a classic yoga stretch, says Jessica Bellofatto, owner of YogaShanti in Sag Harbor, N.Y. Stand with right arm raised over your head, bend arm so elbow is pointing upward and right hand reaches behind your head. Extend left arm sideways, then lower it and reach upward behind your back; try to touch fingers together (as shown). Repeat stretch with left arm on top.

SORE FEETWe walk too fast, we pace, we cram our feet into high heels and shoes a size too small—no wonder 8 out of 10 women say their feet hurt. The really bad news: Sore feet make it harder to stand up to the stresses attacking the rest of your body.In the right hands (a reflexologist’s, to be exact), a foot rub can actually help heal a variety of stress disorders, from migraines to back pain, research shows. Rub under the base of the toes to calm the head, the ball of the foot to relax the chest, and the middle of the foot to soothe the abdominal area, says reflexol-ogist Mara Nicandro, director of Thera-peutic Massage of Texas.

QUIT SHAKIN' THAT SALT SHAKER

Want to lose your belly bloat? Sit-ups aren't gonna do it for you, girl. In Lose Bloat Instantly- Sneaky Sodium Hidden in Your Diet I discuss how the number one thing you can do for a flat stomach is kick the salt out of your diet. And not just in the salt-shaker, but hidden in sauces, cold-cuts, packaged foods, restaurant dishes, almost everywhere! Consider salt that frenemy who is secretly trying to make you fat, like Lindsay Lohan to Regina in Mean Girls. STOP EATIN' SWEETS

Sorry suga, but the sugar has got to go. We have a cocaine-like addiction to

sugar- in fact, researchers have found that the white powder is just as addictive as the other white powder! Read my article Sugar as Addic-tive as Cocaine so you can be weened off this drug for a more svelte bod.BYE BYE ALCOHOL.

In What to Know Before Gettin' Your Drink On I break down the calories you con-sumed at the club last night while you were breakin' it down. FYI: You may have well eaten two cheeseburgers with the amount of calories you con-sumed in vodka-cranberries.DITCH MEAT

I tell you why our obses-sion with "getting enough protein" has actually made us turn massive. Don’t wanna

look like a cow? Stop eating one. Ever wonder why Ameri-ca is the fattest country in the world, with girls menstruat-ing at a younger age then any-where else? Perhaps it has to do with the fact that we feed cows growth hormones, and then eat them. If they make cows big, imagine what they do to us.DRINK A LOT OF WATER

Pretend you were a land-locked fish who was finally just released into the ocean (bad analogy?) Water helps flush fat, purify the body, relieve constipation, stimu-late the kidney and digestive system and relieve dry skin. Drink at least 3 liters of water a day and try refilling your water bottle with filtered wa-ter from a Brita Water Filter (this is the one I use) rather than wasting all that plastic from individual water bottles. (It's the environment people, we all share it!)KNOW YOUR CRAVINGS

If you love anything salty or have an undying sweet-tooth, it's actually your body telling you what vitamins you are deficient in. Instead of indulging in junk, get your body the correct nutrients it is deprived of. Not sure what your body wants (besides cheese fries?) Read What Your Cravings Mean to hear your body out.DITCH CAFFEINE

Ordering a Pumpkin-Spice Latte does not mean you've just consumed a vegetable. And ordering a Chai-tea one.. actually has no real Chai in it. In Why Your Starbucks Drink Order Is Actually Making You Fat I bombard you with the difficult truth- no mat-ter how cute you look with that Christmas Starbucks cup, you're getting pounds away from your bikini bod. Starbucks isn't the only

culprit. Caffeine causes sugar cravings by triggering a surge in your insulin secretion, which stimulates cells in your body to absorb more glucose aka sugar.

LEMON is basically a detox present wrapped in a yellow peel. An-tibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting, lemon naturally detoxifies the body, stimulating diges-tion and cleansing the liver. Bet you didn't know it also helps abandon acne, abolish anxiety and fight fatigue. Squeeze, please!GINGER is also a super-food for its ability to stimulate circulation, aid digestion and cleanse the body of toxins. Sipping ginger tea is a great way to relieve your belly after overeating, plus ginger's spicy kick curbs cravings for other sweet additives.CUCUMBER a favorite of all beauty experts around the world. This green veggie is a fabulous diurectic, which removes bloat and puffiness from your belly, the same way it relieves inflammation when places on your eyelids. It aids in weight loss by encouraging the elimination of waste in your body and is favored as the perfect weight-loss snack due to its low caloric count and high water content.

katy coonmeetliving the gluten-free lifestyle

Katy Coon was on the gluten-free diet before it was cool. But to Katy, it was never really cool.

When she turned 17, Katy learned that her stomach was missing enzymes crucial for the digestion of

gluten. Gluten is a specific complex of proteins that form when wheat is mixed with a liquid. Put simply,

she had an allergy to gluten. After five years of cans and cannots and many digestive disasters later, Katy is living a happy and healthy gluten-free lifestyle.

In layman’s terms, how do you describe gluten intolerance?

It means I’m a pain in the ass, all of the time. I can’t have anything good to eat like everyone else can. No loaves of bread, or donuts or cookies or anything with wheat in it. It has to be special and it doesn’t taste half as good.

What do you mean by special?

It has to be gluten free; rice flour, corn, anything that’s not wheat flour. It’s so expensive.

You’re in college right now. How do you manage to pay for gluten-free food.

I buy food that naturally doesn’t have gluten in it. I eat a lot of vegetables, fruit, cottage cheese and corn tortillas. I don’t buy the specialty products that are made gluten free.

That’s a very extensive list; everything must have made you sick before you were diagnosed as gluten intolerant. Tell me how you figured out what you could and couldn’t eat.

It started when I was in high school, after everything I ate I would get sick because gluten is in everything and I had no idea. I was just eating like I normally do and it was getting worse and worse. I started losing a lot of weight and had an upset stomach all the time and my parents were telling me it was stress but I wasn’t that stressed out. I went to my doctor, who sent me to my gastrologist. He did a stomach biopsy and that’s how I found out. The whole process took about a year.

Wow, a year? How did you deal with that, you must have lost a lot of weight?

I got down to 98 pounds, I was thin and sick. I was obviously anorexic to everybody. Toward the end I just stopped eating at school because I would get sick and have to go to the bathroom, which is embarrassing. [laughing] My French teacher told the office that she didn’t think I was eat-ing because I had a box of cereal I was eating out of in class and she told me it looked like I hadn’t eaten in awhile.

How did change your lifestyle and habits?

At first it was really hard. I went fromnot looking at nutrition labels at all to having to look at everything. My doctor gave me a list of food to avoid, which was pretty much everything. It was just a long process to figure out what I could or couldn’t eat. I had to pretty much transform into a corn and rice diet.

Do you know how common this allergy is or do you know anyone else that is gluten intolerant?

It can be genetic, my grandma has a tolerance to gluten but it’s not as bad as mine. I think a lot of people do it as a diet. I think it’s a fad, it sounds stu-pid I think people should focus more on fruits and vegetables and whole grains and not just gluten free.

There are bigger battles to fight.

… or cheaper ones. It’s in so many things, and not necessarily bad things. I can’t imagine making people have to work around something like cutting gluten out just for a diet because it’s annoying to have to say: “Sorry, I can’t eat that.”

Do you ever think of it as a blessing in disguise?

No.

You would definitely take back having this allergy if you could?

Yes. It would save me a lot of money.

So, If you could take back the fact you are gluten intolerant what would stick with you?

I wouldn’t eat sandwich bread I’m notreally interested in having that. I don’t miss that at all. That’s pretty much it though. It’s frustrating more than anything. You can’t just go through a drive through like everyone wants to do.

What food do you miss the most?

Donuts. I really miss donuts. I haven’t had one in a long time. The other night I had a dream about a Bacona-tor, from Wendy’s. My whole dream was me eating a Baconator, that’s all.

Wow, you are a college student that can’t eat donuts, pizza or beer? How do you deal?

It sucks actually because when people offer you a beer and you have to turn it down you feel like there is something wrong with you, and there is. It’s not like a “no thank you” it’s a “no, thank you, I can’t.”

How do you stay fit? Do you think exercise is important?

Yeah, I’ve always considered myself to be healthy. I like Pilates a lot and I go to that a couple times a week. I love running, especially when it’s nice out.

Do you think being gluten intolerant has made you healthier?

I think it has definitely made me healthier, I eat more fruits and veg-etables, I am more aware of what is in food now.

denise Crone is allergic to just about … everything. When I asked her to name all of her allergies, she had to check the list on her phone to name them allBut, she has spotted the silver lining in her allergies and she’s determined that they wont hold her back and to keep others informed of what they might not know.

Dealing with her allergies has been a long bumpy road. Denise learned when she was a child that she was allergic to the glue in shoes, so she has to wear white socks to keep her feet as sterol as possible. Her allergy to latex ended her career in nursing and bee stings will land her back in the

hospital. It is common for her skin to breakout in rashes. One allergic reaction caused her hands and feet to blister and peel down to one layer skin. “Even the smallest bump would cause my skin to break open,” Denise recalled. But the 55-year-old electrician doesn’t let her allergies hold her back. “I love hiking with my husband and dog. We go on little adventures to find waterfalls,” Denise said. She keeps an EpiPen and inhaler handy since she allergic to hundreds of things outside. Her allergies have taught me simplicity. “I’ve never worn she can’t wear makeup, scented cosmetics or synthetically dyed clothing, said Denise.” “I’m always the first one ready,” she said laughing.

In fact it is the scented cosmetics that get the best of Denise. “At work my girlfriends and I used to walk on our breaks. Two of us would walk in front and two in the back; I was always in the back. The two in the front were on smell-patrol. If there was any fumes or from a person, machine or spill the two in front would usually catch wif of it before it would hit me and then they would tell me to hold my breath or we would head a different direction.

If there was one thing she wished people would take change, is the amount of strong scented perfumes that people wear. “People just don’t know how much they might be causing an asthma attack for someone else,” she said. It’s hard to prevent asthma attacks when I have not control over who I encounter.”

She believes that being allergic to multiple things has really brought light to a lot of unnatural products. “It’s amazing what you learn from labels when you are really looking,” she said. HOMEMADE LIP STAIN

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Teaspoon of nutmeg2 tablespoons of honeyTeaspoon of cinnamonDIRECTIONS: Mix 2 tablespoons of honey with a teaspoon of cinnamon and a teaspoon of nutmeg. The consistency should be like a thick paste. After it’s all mixed, apply the mask to your face and let it sit for 30 minutes.

Wash it off with warm water, scrubbing softly in circular motion for exfoliation. HOW TO USE: Before you begin, it’s always a good idea to do a small test with homemade mixes on your skin to make sure you don’t have a bad reaction to any ingredients. So remember to do a quick patch test on sensitive skin, like that on the inside of your wrist, before applying this mask to your face.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 2 tablespoons of olive oilDIRECTIONS: To give your hair a conditioning treatment, massage about 2 tablespoons of olive oil into your hair & scalp. The amount you’ll use should vary depending on the length & thickness of your hair. And remember to massage it in well – the massaging feels really nice on your scalp, but is also important to the treatment, as massage stimulates helps promote

a healthy scalp.Next, take a warm, damp towel and wrap it around your head and treated hair (“turban” it). Leave it on for about 30-45 minutes. This allows the olive oil to work into your hair to have the full effect. Finally, rinse out the olive oil with shampoo. This might take a few shampoo-ings (when I tried it, it took 2 rounds.) Give your hair further rest by allowing it to air dry, if you have the time. HAIR TREATMENT
