RE-CREATING + RECREATING Giving Life to the Salmon, Giving Life to the Park The District of Squamish prides itself as the Outdoor Recreational Capital of Canada, creating a unique interface between the landscape and built environment. Brennan Park, being the heart of this recreation center, currently struggles with the balance of sports facilities and salmon habitat. This project uses the design of riparian buffers as a framework for program layout, that emphasizes the importance of protecting salmon and educating the park users. This project strengthens the identity of Brennan Park, a place where ecology and recreation co-exist to engage and inspire. “Salmon have played a key role in the cultural, social and economic value of these communities and where there is a commitment to preserving this iconic fish in the interests of all British Columbians and Canadians.” - Cohen Commission on declining salmon populations MASTERPLAN Dike Mamquam River Loggers Creek Finch Creek New Brennan Channel BRENNAN PARK Wilson Slough Brittania Slough Squamish River Mamquam Blind Channel Central Channel v DAN BORSLEIN | MLA GRADUATE DESIGN PROJECT | APRIL 2013 PAINT POLLUTION, FERTILIZERS, LOW INFILTRATION, NO SHADE SEDIMENTATION BREAK DUST, OIL, GASOLINE, SEDIMENT Parking Lot Fence Ditch Baseball Field Dugout Salmon Stream All Season Field > RETREAT + REFOREST 1 MITIGATE + EDUCATE 2 Mixed Forest with Shrub and Floor Layer Shallow Vegetated Streambank Forest Rain Garden Allee sediment & water runoff from turf field evapotranspiration amended soil information platform infiltration overflow jan rainfall temperature recreation other large events salmon activity feb mar apr may jun jul aug sep oct nov dec chum coho chum + coho Send-Off Festival Loggers Sports Festival soccer football baseball lacrosse ice hockey soccer Squamish Valley Music Festival Return Festival Squamish Adventure Center Allee with seating wall H99 exit Access to Estuary Vegetation & Water Forest 10m Estuary Connection Indoor Pool Wood & Glass Atrium Ice Rink Concession Child Care Auditorium Brennan Mall Lookout Bridge Existing Forest Stream to Brennan Creek Hedge Fence Baseball Field Bosque Seating The Sand Box Rearing Habitat Kitchen Covered Patio Rainfall Trough Rain Garden Rain Garden Concrete Pavers Asphalt Cafe To Parking < Outdoor Pool 10m spring loaded flood gate Floating Lights Access to Water’s Edge Brennan Plaza Pond Brennan Plaza Pond New Glass Atrium Clean Roof Rain Garden Rain Garden The Sand Box Indoor Pool Field Edge Auditorium Lookout Bridge Decreased Runoff by over 20% Greater Connectivity and Circulation Improved Programming and Habitat A Unique Park Identity Highway 99 Gateway Signage Inset Bench Rock Wall Buffers Noise REDD Special Bench Raised Boardwalk Protects Habitat 10m Sea-to-Sky Gateway MAMQUAM RIVER RECONNECTION DISTRICT OF SQUAMISH EXISTING CONDITIONS RIPARIAN AREA ENCROACHMENT METHODS TO PROTECT AND ENHANCE RIPARIAN AREA PROGRAM SCHEDULE INTERACTIVE LEARNING RAIN GARDEN FUNCTION ESTUARY OLD FIELD OPEN MEADOW BASEBALL FIELDS LOGGERS SPORTS FIELD FITNESS CENTER RECREATION CENTER TENNIS BASEBALL FIELDS WETLAND RESTORATION WALLMART PARKING SEA-TO-SKY GATEWAY SOCCER FIELDS Wetland Restoration Brennan Plaza Pond Feature During “Return Festival”

RE-CREATING + RECREATINGGiving Life to the Salmon, Giving Life to the Park

The District of Squamish prides itself as the Outdoor Recreational Capital of Canada, creating a unique interface between the landscape and built environment.

“Salmon have played a key role in the cultural, social and economic value of these communities and where there is a commitment to preserving this iconic fish in the interests of all British Columbians and Canadians.”- Cohen Commission on declining salmon populations
