gAMeSUMMARYOU won its first national championship by goingaperfect10-0intheregularseason.However,Kentucky,coachedbyPaul“Bear”Bryant,upsettheSoonersandbrokea31-gameOUwinningstreak.OUlostabowl-record five fumbles in falling behind 13-0. gAMeSUMMARYFloridaStateusedasophisticatedpassingattacktowineasily.Toaddinsulttoinjury,fouroftheSeminoles’TDpasseswerethrownonfourth-downplays.FourOklahomaplayershadbeenfoundineligiblethenightbeforethegamebecausetheyhadsignedprocontractswhichwasinviolationofNCAArules.FSUwide receiver Fred Biletnikoff finished the gamewith13receptionsfor192yardsandfourTDs.

The Sooners had first and goal twice in the first half, but fumbles ended OU’s chances andtheSoonersneverreallythreatenedagain.ThelonehighlightfortheOklahomateamwasavisitbyPresidentJohnF.KennedytotheSooners’lockerroom.AlthoughPresidentKennedyclaimedneutrality,itwasobviousbythegrimaceonhisfacehewasbackingtheOklahomateam.
gAMeSUMMARYOUhadlostonlyonegame,the“GameoftheCentury”toNebraskaonThanksgivingDay.AuburnfeaturedHeismanTrophywinnerPatSullivan.Itwasrunversuspass,withOU’srunnersprevailing.TheSoonersroaredtoa31-0halftimeleadandamassed439yardsrushingbygame’send,anewOklahomaandSugarBowlrecord.QBJackMildren,playingin the final game of his brilliant college career, scoredaSugarBowlrecordthreetimes.OUfinished second in the polls to Nebraska with another Big Eight team, Colorado, finishing third.
