want to miss!

THIS WEEK’S READINGS Today’s selections from scripture invite us to reflect on our wealth. You can feel the anger of the prophet Amos as he condemns the greedy merchants who cheat the poor and powerless. In the Gospel, Jesus praises the clever steward who manages his master’s wealth to aid his debtors. One can put wealth to good use, but one “cannot serve both God and mammon.” How does God want you to use your wealth?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK What can I do to serve God over mammon?

Jokes As our St. Louis Cardinals are battling for a playoff spot, here are some baseball jokes.

• Which ballplayer makes flapjacks? The batter. • Why are some umpire’s fat? They always clean the

plate. • A man at a baseball game wondered why the ball

kept getting bigger and bigger. Then it hit him

CONGRATULATIONS !!

Stewardship is simply recognizing that everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God. It is living a grateful and generous lifestyle where we try to become more Christ-centered and less self-centered. The whole point is to strengthen our relationship with God and with each other get to heaven.

The Parish Office will be closed Friday, Oct. 11th

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! –September 22nd Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Stewardship and Generosity Whether young or old, rich or poor, married or not, we are each called to live our lives as true disciples, through conscious stewardship of all our resources. Every gift we’ve been given, every tick of the second-hand on the clock, every dollar we may earn—we can make much—or little—of, depending on how attuned we really are to God’s will for us. If we serve God first, His unfathomable generosity will give increase to all our efforts. (CCC 2402-2418) archstl.org/dynamic

Dear Friends in Christ, On Sunday, October 6, 2019, there will be a special collection for the formation of permanent deacons in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. This collection relieves some of their financial burden for studies to become a deacon. Since 1977, 465 men have been ordained as permanent deacons in the Archdiocese. There are 189 active deacons ordained for the Archdiocese and 102 retired deacons. There are 67 men in formation at this time. When the permanent diaconate program was initiated in the Archdiocese in January 1977, men went through a two-year formation program, with a third year of post-ordination formation. Since then, the program has gradually expanded to five years of formation, plus three more years of post-ordination formation. Deacons serve in parishes, hospitals, archdiocesan agencies, and other organizations. There are six deacons who serve as Parish Life Coordinators. Half of the active deacons continue to work full-time jobs, requiring them to balance family lives and professions with their ministry as a deacon. During formation and after ordination, deacons offer their time, personal gifts and material goods to build up the Church in the Archdiocese without compensation. Their service extends into many areas of parish life, as they assist all of us in carrying out the mission of the Church. Please support the formation of permanent deacons by promoting the special collection for the Formation of Permanent Deacons on Sunday, October 6, 2019. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis
