RCSC’s Program Coordinator, Nick Farmer, headed over to Russia to witness World Cup in

full effect. Nick has had a strong passion for soccer, which has seen him run our indoor and

outdoor program as well as working his way up the refereeing rankings. Here’s what he had

to say about his experience over in Russia.

Who was your pick to win the cup at the beginning?

England

What was your favourite you watched?

Favorite match was Round of 16 England Vs Colombia. Match went to extra time and then finished on penalties. Atmosphere at the match was intense. It was like attending a match in South America. Every time England touched the ball there would be boos echoed throughout the arena.

How was the atmosphere?

The Atmosphere around the matches was fantastic. There would be Fan fest sites set up in each hosting city. This would be filled with big screen Tvs and hundreds of Russian locals. There was over 15,000 aussies that travelled to the matches so it felt like home. The locals would stop you in the street and want photos. The Russian people/culture is something unique to experience. The South Americans were the most passionate supporters.

How was Russia in terms of recreation and sport

The Russians are big on their Tennis, in Sochi there was a huge tennis academy. Russians are passionate about Ice Hockey, football and getting into Rugby Union.

What was your highlight of your trip

Highlight of my trip was meeting people from all over the world. To be able to travel to a different country and meet people who share the same passion for the sport is something special. There were moments that were created in Russia that will never be forgotten. If you are a football fan and are thinking about going to a World Cup do it.

It is one of the best sporting events in the world and you will not be disappointed.

This coming summer will provide one of the best opportunities ever to get involved in sport

and recreation in your community. The RCSC is hosting a range of competitions in our

indoor and outdoor facilities for junior, senior and Learn to Play categories.

As an early adopter of the sport of Pickleball at the RCSC, we have now taken another step

in the formation of one of the first Pickleball clubs in Sydney. From September, interested

players can take out a multi-pass membership which will entitle them to regular competition,

insurance and other valuable membership benefits.

Multi-passes are designed to suit your budget with a 5 visit pass just $50 and a 10 visit pass

for $100.

The RCSC will soon introduce a new children’s YMCA Sports and Games Clinic during

school holiday periods for busy working families in Ryde district and surrounds.

With easy parking for drop off and pick up, state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor sport facilities,

and specially trained and skilled staff, we can provide the specialized clinics to upskill

children in basketball, netball and football during school holidays.

So a break from school should no longer be a break from fun and activity with RCSC new

Action Break programs.

Further details will be available soon.

The City of Ryde council is once again demonstrating its commitment to its own slogan

“Lifestyle and Opportunity @ Your Doorstep’ with the launch of the ELS Park Playground

expected to open in late September. This exciting new development will add another link to

other facilities in park precinct, including the already established fitness station challenge,

BBQ areas, dog park and sport fields.
