Hence this citation programme provides a means for Rotary clubs to personally recognize a member of the club for outstanding efforts in all the four Avenues of Service. Author’s Comments In my view, this is a significant honour for any Rotarian as the requirements are quite demanding to fulfill. From what I recall, in the history of RCBKS, we have not seen any Rotarian conferred this Citation yet; probably nobody has examined this matter closely, as to whether it can apply to members in the Club. I agree that the motivation to do good and bring benefit the needy is not for earning recognition. Notwithstanding that, I see no harm in motivating and encouraging our deserving Rotarians with the due recognition he/she has earned in our fulfilling our motto of Service Above Self to the community. As a mature and stable Rotary Club with multiple achievements to show, where it warrants, I wish to encourage future leaders to be on the lookout to give due personal recognition to members who are eligible. Member's Contribution TRIP TO DUSUN IN KUALA KUBU BARU By Teng Yoong Folks! It is the Durians season now, and our taste buds are all keyed up for the King of fruits, come what may. Hence, it was right on cue when we received James Cheong’s invitation for eat-as-much-as-you-want-durian- for-free at his Dusun in KKB on 25.07.2010, and believe me, no right mind persons amongst us Malaysians would want to miss the good offer. Twelve of us (James, James’ friend Mun, CY, Frances, Fang Keong, Siew Hwa and hubby, Angie, Susan, Cecelia, my son-Ching Hwa and me) in a convoy of four cars made the 45 minutes trip to the said 10-acres Dusun which was nestled in the vicinity of Kuala Kubu town. When we arrived, we had to park our cars along the narrow outer road before crossing the hanging bridge (that reminded me of the canopy bridge in Mulu Caves) towards the keeper’s hut. We were happy to see the keeper and could not wait for what we came for. Glad to say we were not disappointed at all as we were treated to various high-yield species of durians that were seeded from the range of 101, D23, D24 and the likes. We all had our fill until we could not eat anymore, and had whatever balance left over to take home as well – an average taking of two durians for each of us. After the durian feast, we took a walk around the dusun with the intention of collecting more durians, if any. Except for some of us, we came away empty handed in affirmation with what was pointed out earlier by the keeper that the harvest in the said dusun was lesser this year than before. .... continue on next page

The 2010 National Interact Quiz

25th July 2010, a beautiful Sunday where most of our sunrisers were busytasting the king of fruit that “tastes like heaven and smells like hell”, Sunnyand myself were busy chaperoning the Interactors and gaining knowledge.

The Quiz was organized by RC Bandar Sunway and co - sponsored bySunway University College who hosted the event. RCBKS sponsored 2teams from the Interact Club SMK Sri Hartamas. The Quizmaster was PPMovin Miranda who conducted the entire quiz very professionally. All weregeneral knowledge based questions.

During the Preliminary Round, 30 questions were asked and each team hadto write their answers on a sheet of paper. Rotarians and Teacher Advisorswere also encouraged to participate. After a mind-boggling hour, theparticipants submitted their answers and this was followed by refreshments.

Out of 60 teams, 16 teams received certificates, and the top 6 teamsqualified for the Finals. Unfortunately our Interactors did not qualify for theFinals. The RCBKS’ team comprising of Sunny, my daughter Shiva Ruppeni,my husband and I won 2nd place in the Rotarians/Teacher Advisors Category. We are proudly announcing that we scored 28 rights out of 30 questions. Welost 2 marks by cancelling out two right answers.

In the Finals, there were 5 written questions, followed by 50 verbal questions.SMK Seafield came out top and received Sunway University Scholarshipworth RM72,000 for the three participants and a Challenge Trophy.

Although our Interactors did not win, we certainly gained a lot of knowledge. Our interactors were given a certificate and they were proud of theirparticipation and planning for a come back next year.

Reaching home with great knowledge, we enjoyed the great taste of DURIANthat you great Sunrisers delivered. SO THOUGHTFUL .....by Ghaurry

DISTRICT EVENTS

The 100% Club

One of the requirements in Rotary is Attendance. Some diehard Rotarians Ihave met in my journey have proudly informed me that they have been ableto keep their attendance records clean at 100% year on year. How does oneachieve 100% on a sustained basis?

From my past observation, it is not a difficult task if you put your mind to it.Apart from attending the weekly club meetings, you can also countattendance through the following participation:

· Club organized Projects such as fellowships, outings for CommunityService, visits to the Interact Club, visiting sister clubs, taking part invocational visits etc

· Board Meetings or sanctioned Committee meetings

· REF Working Committee meetings

· Participating in a District event such as the Rotary FoundationSeminar, Membership Development Seminar, District Conference orDistrict Assembly are also valid.

If you missed any of the above, you can try to do a make-up at the regularmeetings of any of the numerous Rotary clubs around the Klang Valley. Weare fortunate as there are som many to pick from, on any of the weekdays. Some of our RCBKS Rotarians have even gone to the extent of doing an e-make up (ask Sunny and Poay Lim).

I am proud to present to you the 100% for the Rotary Year 2009-2010

CLUB News

We took time for some group photos, and before long, we said our good-byes to the keeper, and proceededhome.

It was an enjoyable outing, and moreso for me as it brought back reminis-cence of my (together with mysiblings and cousins) happy visits tomy father’s orchard in Balakongduring my younger days. My father’sorchard has long been sold.

I would like to say a big THANK YOU to James for his generosity andkindness of heart for the durians.

Cafeteria provides brain foodin Peru

In Peru, many elementary schools don’tserve lunch. Instead, children go hometo eat in the middle of the day. Butchildren whose families live in povertyoften return to school hungry.

The Rotary Club of Independencia-Huaraz, Peru, built this comedor, orcafeteria, to serve those children, mostof whom eat their only full meal of the day here. A Group Study Exchangeteam from District 5960 (parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, USA) was inHuaraz for the grand opening of the cafeteria, and team member SarahHale, an art teacher from Northfield, Minn., caught this student in a quietmoment during the celebration. Most people in Huaraz, in the CordilleraBlanca range of the Andes, are members of the indigenous Quechua group.

“Through the Foundation,we can take on challengesthat no one else has the

ability or the inclination orthe organizational resourcesto tackle. Because we share

our resources, and ourskills, in a way that no one

else does — with love, with kindness, and with

simple generosity.”
