Vol 19 Number 25 SELAMAT PAGI 19 February 2011 FEBRUARY IS WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH Member's Contribution Chinese New Year Party When Ann Ann sent out the invitation to her home-warming dinner for Saturday last, Karen very considerately decided to move the club’s Chinese New Year party to Sunday 13 Feb to solve the clash. But little did we know that we would be trading in a balmy Saturday evening for a stormy Sunday sundown! Amidst claps of thunder and furious lightning, guests had to be ferried from their cars with umbrellas that could hardly contain the downpour. Jeremy had to ford a stream almost getting out of his car. But the club’s party spirit stayed afloat all through and we hardly felt any discomfort. It is fortunate perhaps that the Chongs’ home is very spacious and comfortably laid out. Soon enough the rain abated and Poay Lim welcomed one and all to the party thanking the Chong family for their hospitality. Then the potluck kicked off to an enthusiastic start with the rowdy Raw Fish Tossing. We moved seamlessly to the buffet after that. The variety in the spread is truly impressive. From Herbal Chicken [James Cheong] to Grilled Chicken Fillet with Apricot Mustard dip [Ann Judy] to the wicked Tong Po Pork [Ann Gerri], the quality of the dishes surpassed muster and we should seriously think of a cookout as a project! The list is just too long and apologies are tendered for omitting the rest. Steve and Gerri must be complimented for their dedication to duty! They delivered their wonderful dish and helped set up the tables and chairs before driving off to send their guest to KLIA and then returning a hour or so later to rejoin us. What a good demonstration of presidential preparedness! Our guests including REF volunteers Richard Hoy, Gina and Mohan and Steven Lim and a few others merrily joined in the throng. The atmosphere was enlivened further by the kids letting off volleys of firecracker led by the forever-young Sanjay. As usual a core of us stayed well into the night enjoying the rest of the night putting our feet up and chewing the cud. We helped as much as we could with the cleaning up but I’m sure Karen and her parents had lots to do in the morning to put things back in order. For that we again say, “You are wonderful and gracious hosts!” Have a lively Rabbit Y ear Ahead! By President Poay Lim Rotary’s 106th anniversary Throughout the week of 23 February Rotary clubs and districts will also be illuminating iconic landmarks around the world with the End Polio Now message to raise awareness of Rotary’s pledge to rid the world of the crippling disease. The landmarks include the Trevi Fountain in Rome; the parliament building in The Hague; the soccer stadium in Cape Town, South Africa; a gate at the Lantern Festival in Taiwan; Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, Japan; the government building in Karachi, Pakistan; the planetarium in Seoul, Korea; the Globe of the Mall of Asia in the Philippines; and the Charminar        in Hyderabad, India. Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland sold and planted 4.6 million crocus bulbs across the region in October so their purple blooms would flower around Rotary’s birthday. The Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse, Hertfordshire, England, earned a Guinness World Record for the most people (636) simultaneously planting flower bulbs during an event at Butt’s Close Park in Hitchin. Honor Rotary’s anniversary by planning an event in  your community.
