I spend some time thinking about the year that was, and pondering the highlights and the challenges. I pat myself on the back and acknowledge that I have managed to complete another successful year on this earth, and can celebrate the fact that I have good friends and family, a great place to work , a smile and my health. I think about what might I change for the next year 2013. What would I like to be different? How can I bring more joy into my life? What are the main areas of my work that needs to be improved or strengthened? What is happening in the lives of my near and dear ones? I then try to find some time at the beach, where I am relaxed, and I let my mind wander around these questions. Watching the rhythmic ebb and flow of the seawater helps me decide what changes I will undertake to make my world a better place for all to live in. The soft sea breeze helps to blow away the worries and troubles from the past. I can sit, gently relaxed, and just be. I wish for everyone at CNLC, a great holiday experience, a relaxing and friendly fun filled time with your families and friends and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2013. Warm regards to all, Mary Hello from Mary Parfrey Hello from Mary Parfrey ….and from Sarah ….and from Sarah It’s December! This is because they have attended class regularly and given some time for their learning. We are all looking forward to the break. End of the year at CNLC 2012

Hello Everyone,

The end of a year always brings a moment or two of reflection

for me. I spend some time thinking about the year that was, and

pondering the highlights and the challenges. I pat myself on the

back and acknowledge that I have managed to complete another

successful year on this earth, and can celebrate the fact that I

have good friends and family, a great place to work , a smile and my health.

I think about what might I change for the next year 2013. What

would I like to be different? How can I bring more joy into my

life? What are the main areas of my work that needs to be

improved or strengthened? What is happening in the lives of my

near and dear ones?

I then try to find some time at the beach, where I am relaxed,

and I let my mind wander around these questions. Watching the

rhythmic ebb and flow of the seawater helps me decide what

changes I will undertake to make my world a better place for all

to live in. The soft sea breeze helps to blow away the worries

and troubles from the past. I can sit, gently relaxed, and just be.

I wish for everyone at CNLC, a great holiday experience, a

relaxing and friendly fun filled time with your families and

friends and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2013.

Warm regards to all,

Mary

Staff and students participated

in some healthy activities such

as walking around the neigh-

bourhood and gentle dance and

movement exercises

A SPECIAL CELEBRATION

I like the exercise –side to side, stretch up both hands, bending up and down.

This morning our school CNLC had a special celebrated program; about eating healthy

food ,walking exercise and gentle exercise. We all practised walking to local park then

returned to school.

I like the walking exercise. It feels good -fresh air, sunny sky, warm weather today. On the

way walking we saw streets, houses, flowers, grass, shops and very quiet corners between

small blocks.

After that, we joined second gentle exercise in the class. We all enjoyed doing it, feeling

very relaxed but I like most side to side and stretching up both hands and bending up and

down is flexible for me.

I like the instructor her actions are beautiful and soft. SUE-PHAN 2012

Songkran Festival started more than 120 years ago.

And it’s always on 13th of April every year. In the old

days, we celebrated it as Thai New Year but now we

celebrate on 1st of January like in other countries. We

celebrate the festival by throwing water at each other.

Around that time is the hottest time of the year so Thai

people like to cool off with water. And of course that’s

including me too.

Around 10 years ago my auntie and uncle-in-law had a

motorbike accident. At that time my auntie was 7

months pregnant. It wasn’t a big accident so they

hadn’t been hurt or broken anything. Nevertheless, the

doctor still wanted to check my auntie’s body. So they

took her for a whole body x-ray. Immediately, they

found a tumor in her brain! The doctor wanted her to

have an operation as soon as possible. Therefore, my

family agreed with the doctor to get her into hospital

for an operation.

Unfortunately the first operation didn’t work and the

tumor had spread. So she had to have a second

operation. During the operation her head had swollen a

lot and her face looked totally different. The second

operation didn’t work again so we all knew she

couldn’t make it. Then we had to start thinking about

saving the baby. Because while the mother was having

treatment, she couldn’t eat anything so the baby only

got food from the feeding tube and also, he could have

been affected by the treatment. Eventually auntie said

she wanted the doctor to do caesarian to save her child.

Then we all realised she had given up.

Songkran Festival started. I was playing and having

fun with my friends while my mum looked for me.

When she found me she told me my auntie had already

passed away. We were upset and in shock, even though

we had known this day will come but still hurt our

hearts a lot. The baby was born safely. The preparation

for the funeral started and the body was moved to the

temple for last rites.

Since then, I’ve never enjoyed celebrating the festival

again. It’s certainly the most memorable thing in my

life!

In 2007 before I came to Australia, I went on holiday to

Syria with my Mum and my brother who was 14 years old.

After about 15 days (the day before we were leaving) my

brother got so sick. He was unconscious and we couldn’t

wake him up. My Mum and I took him to the hospital. After

the doctor did the test he said my brother had a stroke that

cut the nerve and started bleeding so his brain has gone into

collapse and he needs a big and difficult operation. They

could not do it in Syria.

We were in a pathetic situation. I didn’t know what to know.

Then the doctor encouraged us to go back to Iraq. After we

arranged to go back to my country we felt shocked and

frustrated at his condition. Back home the doctor said they

didn’t have the tools and skill to do this surgery then he

advised us to take him to India. I emailed the X-Ray and test

to the Indian hospital (it’s called ‘Apollo’). They said we

accept this patient but this’ll cost you about $30,000. I didn’t

have this money to pay so I went to the bank to apply for a

personal loan. I was happy when they accepted my

application and gave me the money.

Then we took my brother to India and he had the surgery - it

was successful. His story was even in the newspaper because

it was so special (that is fabulous). After forty days we

returned to Iraq. That made me and my family so happy.

Now he is back to his normal life.

Hada’s story about her HolidayHada’s story about her Holiday

In 2003 my family and I went to Perth to visit my Aunt’s family. When my kids were young, they were very happy to travel anywhere. Every day my cousin drove my family and her family to the beach and park. Perth beaches are very beautiful. My kids and my Aunt’s granddaughter played together at the beach under water. We took lots of photos. My aunt’s granddaughter was five years old and about the same age as my son. She didn’t like travelling in a car because of the noise but she enjoyed going to McDonalds.

From Kings park in Perth you can see the whole city. There is also a China town, many Chinese people live in Perth.

On the weekend fruit is sold very cheaply at the market. We stayed in Perth for one week and then returned to Melbourne. Now I always remember Perth. I’d like to return to Perth for a holiday soon.

The Thursday afternoon class went to Federation Square and the Ian Potter gallery. Inside the gallery we looked at Aboriginal art on the ground floor and many Australian paintings upstairs.

Our lovely volunteer Harriet came to Federation Square. We saw this amazing building made from sticks on Flinders Street.
