• In recent years a submerged wall 100metres east of the fort hasbeen discovered. The under-sea wall is 3 metres high, 7 metreswide and 122 metres long. How and why this sea-wall was built isnot clear. On the bank of the Vaghotan River, about 3kms from thefort, there was a wet dock where the Marathas used to build andrepair their ships..
• Vijayadurg is an ancient site. Initially known as Gheria, it wasenlarged by the Bijapur rulers and then strengthened and enlargedin the mid-17th century by Shivaji, to whom it owes its triple line offortifications, towers and also its new name, Vijayadurg VictoryFort. During the time of Kanhoji Angre (1667-1729 AD), the navalchief of the Marathas, the fort was so strong and firmly held that itsuccessfully withstood assaults of the European maritimepowers. Later in 1756 AD it fell to the combined operations of theEuropeans and the Peshwas. However, it remained in the hands ofthe Peshwas till 1818 AD when finally it was surrendered to theEnglish
More about Vijay Durg• Vijaydurg, situated 48kms south of Ratnagiri, is one of the strongest
marine forts on the west coast of India. It is also an excellent harbour. Built on a hill on the mouth of Vaghotan River, the fort was protected on three sides by the sea and on the east side by ditch, now filled up.
• Once naval bases, Vijaydurg and Sindhudurg bear affirmation to Maharashtra's military domination during Shivaji's reign. Shivaji, to whom it owes its finest features -- the triple line of walls, the numerous towers and the massive interior buildings, strengthened Vijaydurg or Victory Fort around the 17th century. Once seized by the British and renamed Fort Augustus, Sindhudurg or the Ocean Fort at Malvan port has history etched all over.
• Constructed by Shivaji in 1664, at a site personally selected by him. The construction of a sea fort is a stupendous task, and at Sindhudurg no efforts were spared. Over 2000 khandis (4000 mounds) of iron were used for casting and the foundation stones were laid down firmly in lead.
• Even today, as one approaches the fort past a rocky reef, navigable through a narrow channel, one marvels at the transportation of such heavy material through such choppy waters. Vijaydurg beaches, they offer the visitor one of the most serene and beautiful coastal views in India.
