Before He Was Known…

Raphael’s full name is Raffaello Sanzi Raphael received his early training from his father,

the painter Giovanni Santi. He studied the works of Leonardo and Michelangelo

in his earlier days. He made sure he had his own technique, and

worked hard to achieve it. He hoped to one day to have the determination and

the skill as his idols.

•Even in Raphael’s first works you can tell that hos sensibility was different from his teacher’s.

Raphael

Raphael was popular with the men of Vatican. He was able to decorate “some of the greatest chambers” in the Christendom. These chambers were the private rooms of the pope.

He became more well known

when he painted the portrait of

Julius II in 1512. Julius II

Raphael was an attractive, good humored, and polished artist.

After Julius II died Raphael’s influence and responsibilities increased with Leo X.

Pope Leo X found Raphael much easier to work with than the demanding Michelangelo.

The Pope had him paint him a portrait of him and his cousin and designed several “magnificent buildings” under their rule.

The painting is one of his famous large-scale paintings. He painted many paintings of Christ and the Virgin Mary. This could mean he was very religious.
