Dear Baseball Alumni and Friends, I am extremely honored to introduce myself as the new Head Coach of the Ranger baseball program. Having grown up just 30 minutes north of Madison, I’m well aware of the outstand- ing academic and athlec opportunies that Drew University has to offer. It is that foundaon, along with energy, enthusiasm, and a passionate coaching staff that we will use to ensure the future success of this program. Aſter my appointment in August, the staff immediately got down to business. We were on the road recruing for most of the summer and fall in places like New York, Vir- ginia, and Pennsylvania. As many of you already know, New Jersey is also a hot bed for baseball talent and I’m commied to bringing in the best local players. Pracces were energy intensive and compeve as we tried to evaluate the current group of guys. The fall was highlighted by our three game series versus Stevens Instute of Technology on the last day of the fall. Although Stevens took two of three, there were a lot of posives we will carry into the off-season. We ulmately made our final decisions on the roster and will head into the spring with 33 acve players on the team. One of my priories is to communicate regularly with the Drew baseball community. With the help of Joe Cardinale C’07, we have established a Drew Baseball Alumni Facebook page. I would encourage all of you who are on Facebook to join the group. The page will be used as a forum to post everything from game results to job and internship opportuni- es. I will also be sending you this bi-annual newsleer, which will include informaon on the current team, updates on alumni, upcoming events, along with some fun baseball trivia and fast facts. I also encourage everyone to dust off the old photo albums and send us some pictures from your playing days for us to include. Dear Baseball Alumni and Friends,

I am extremely honored to introduce myself as the new Head Coach of the Ranger baseball program. Having grown up just 30 minutes north of Madison, I’m well aware of the outstand-ing academic and athletic opportunities that Drew University has to offer. It is that foundation, along with energy, enthusiasm, and a passionate coaching staff that we will use to ensure the future success of this program.

After my appointment in August, the staff immediately got down to business. We were on the road recruiting for most of the summer and fall in places like New York, Vir-ginia, and Pennsylvania. As many of you already know, New Jersey is also a hot bed for baseball talent and I’m committed to bringing in the best local players. Practices were energy intensive and competitive as we tried to evaluate the current group of guys. The fall was highlighted by our three game series versus Stevens Institute of Technology on the last day of the fall. Although Stevens took two of three, there were a lot of positives we will carry into the off-season. We ultimately made our final decisions on the roster and will head into the spring with 33 active players on the team.

One of my priorities is to communicate regularly with the Drew baseball community. With the help of Joe Cardinale C’07, we have established a Drew Baseball Alumni Facebook page. I would encourage all of you who are on Facebook to join the group. The page will be used as a forum to post everything from game results to job and internship opportuni-ties. I will also be sending you this bi-annual newsletter, which will include information on the current team, updates on alumni, upcoming events, along with some fun baseball trivia and fast facts. I also encourage everyone to dust off the old photo albums and send us some pictures from your playing days for us to include.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you in the days, months, or years to come. Please feel free to contact me directly at any time.

Go Rangers!

SUMMIT, N.J. (October 25, 2011) – On Sunday afternoon the Drew baseball team traded in its gloves and bats for hard hats and table saws to help out The Morris Habitat for Humanity. The student-athletes spent the entire day on a construction site in Summit that will soon be affordable housing for low-income families.

The Ranger baseball team spent the majority of the day caulking and sealing the inside of the housing units and framing the garage of one of the houses. The Morris Habitat for Humanity is building a two-story six-plex of for-sale condominiums on Morris Avenue near Orchard Street and the historic Wallace Chapel AME Zion Church. Each unit will consist of a single-level townhouse with two or three bedrooms, living room, dining room and two bathrooms.

The initiative was put forth by Head Coach Brian Hirschberg who has partici-pated in the Habitat for Humanity campaign before.

“It was an easy decision for us,” said Hirschberg who arranged for his players to participate. “For us it was a huge team bonding experience and also gave the guys an opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and influence those who are less fortunate in a positive way.”Many of the student-athletes never engaged in any type of construction like this before and had to learn on the job.

“Going into it, we weren’t sure what to expect,” said junior first baseman Justin Mancini. “By the end of the day the guys got the hang of it and it went surprisingly very smooth.”

Asked on what kind of impact the day put on the players, Mancini added that the hard day’s work really put things in perspective for them and many of his teammates talked about coming back on their own.Hirschberg and the Rangers hope to get back to the job site one more time as a team before they open up the season in the spring.

On a perfect weather Sunday in early October, the Drew baseball team took on the Ducks from Stevens Institute of Technology in a three game set at Doc Young Field. Game one featured a strong starting pitching performance from junior right-hander Alex Taylor, who allowed just two runs, three hits and six strike outs over four innings of work. The Ducks would strike first however in the top of the third inning scoring a pair of runs after a lead-off triple. In the bottom half of the inning, the Rangers would cut the lead in half after junior Neil Cashes worked a two-out walk, stole second base, and came around to score on a single by junior Michael Bodden. After another inning of scoreless work, the Stevens hitters proved to be too strong for Ranger bullpen, adding three runs in the 5th and six runs in the 6th innings. Bodden led the Rangers with three hits in the game, while seniors Steve DeBonis, Kyle O’Neill and Tom Murray each had a hit.

In Game two, junior right-hander Tom Koontz proved to be the difference for the Blue and Green. Koontz was nearly perfect, allowing just one hit over four innings of work while striking out four Ducks hitters. Junior closer Pat Rock shut the door for the victory tossing just 17 pitches in two innings of work to complete the shutout, 6-0. Offensively, the Rangers scattered 12 hits for six runs, highlighted by freshman catcher Rob “Bip” Auletti who was 3-for-3 on the day. Fellow freshman Chris Roll, senior Pete Tuchol, and junior Corey Mulligan each had a pair of hits. Game three also proved to be an early pitcher’s duel, as freshman Leo Ruiz surrendered just two hits and one run over two innings of work. Sophomore southpaw Ken Myers settled in nicely, giving up just one unearned run over the next two innings before coming out in the top half of the 5th. Stevens went on to score five more runs, as the Ducks took the rubber match game 7-0. The lone Ranger hit came off the bat of freshman Francis Rossi.
