Farewell Bill I recently received word from Bill Shield’s son that Bill (#2951) passed away on St. Patricks Day (March 17). Recruited by Kurt Ottenheimer back in 1990, Bill had been an active collector of perfins. At least one of his specialties was patterns in Great Britain Scott Type A40, with

Auction Watch Chris Reuger (#1834) has spotted several lots in Schuyler Rumsey’s Auction #30. These stamps serve to indicate that specialty revenue items (in this case beer revenue stamps) do not suffer serious value loss from the catalog value for the stamps themselves when they are rev-perf cancelled. I am not familiar with the beer revenues – but suspect that examples of the rev-perfs patterns can be had on lesser value stamps than these. At the time I accessed this auction the current minimum bids on most of the lots ran from about 15 – 40% of the catalog prices shown below – and there was still plenty of online bidding time left. For a fuller description of these lots (I have heavily edited those below) and wonderful illustrations of the stamps go to www.rumsryauctions .com. Perfin First Day of Use Covers Bob Szymaski (LM#145)
As perfin collectors we have concocted all types of lists for our various collecting interests. There are pattern lists, issue lists, EKU lists, have- and want-lists, synoptic lists, position lists, and the forever "out-of-date" and "I know I have it somewhere" lists. But here is one you may not have thought of - but might find somewhat interesting and forming a collection of these items may just peak your interest. Why just collect "First Day of Issue" covers of various US stamps? You are a perfin collector, so what could be more natural than collecting the "First Day of Perforator Use" covers of any US pattern! Shown here are thirteen perfin covers representing seventeen different perfin patterns that I have in my collection. I surmise that several others, especially the personal perfins may have "First Day of Use" covers and I hope that anyone with one in their possession or knowledge of any not on this list might let me know of them. Presented below in order of first date of use are my 13 FDOU covers.
Dec 25, 1970 - Des 46P "Trophy"
Jun 15, 1973 - E70.5 "EL/PEX"
Jun 30, 1975 - R94.7P "R.J."
Apr 1, 1977 - P80.1.2.3.4.5P "PF"
Apr 30, 1977 - A215.5P "APS"
Jul 4, 1977 - L130.5RP "LP"
The Perfins Bulletin – May 2008 – Page 78
Apr 10, 1978 - K37.5P "KIS/NER"
Nov 10, 1978 - Des 50P "Lighthouse"
Jan 19, 1980 - O70.5P "OSS"
Sep 1, 1980 - J3.5P "JAG"(* [by Jack Gooding])
May 25, 1984 - Des 52P "Beaver"
Feb 1, 1986 - Z1.2 "ZC/DB"
Jan 24, 1997 - J3.5P "JAG"(* [by John Griswold])
Only the "Trophy" Nut Company and Zion Church Designers and Builders could be considered to be commercially used perfins. All other are certainly philatelic or personal in nature. I have only chosen to represent US perfins although foreign covers do exist. The French EIPA30 perfin (in Scott# C5a &C6b) exists on FDOU covers and, although I collect France, I really can't show you one as I do not possess it. (Check your Scott Catalog for a valuation and you will probably realize why!) (*) Lastly, there is a very interesting story behind the "JAG" perforator, one that I would like to share with everyone as one of the all time feel good stories. When John A. Gooding, the original owner of the "JAG" perforator passed away, his collection was
The Perfins Bulletin – May 2008 – Page 79
handled by former President Dick Mewhinney and the perforator remained in his care and custody. In a visit to Dick's home, I was shown this and another "wheelchair" perforator which Dick uses. Several weeks later my good friend and new fellow perfin collector Rev John A. Griswold and I were talking and John wanted to show me something. He had seen the "JAG" perfin in the US Catalog and wanted to know if I had a copy as these were his initials. I quickly gave John a copy from my duplicates and relayed this conversation to Dick
Mewhinney inquiring if the "JAG" perforator might be for sale and at what amount. I wish I could convey John's amazement when I next called him with the information that he could obtain the perforator! Maybe a kid in a candy store with a rich uncle best describes his feelings. And that is how we have two first days of issue for the same perforator! Note: I have duplicates of several covers should anyone be interested in this type of collection, please feel free to contact me.
Private Auction #21 and More!!!!!
Dick Mewhinney's Vast World-wide Perfin Collection! Bob Szymanski LM-145
Every so often I hear perfin collectors bemoaning the difficulty in obtaining desirable perfins. Naturally, since some patterns are only known in one or a few copies those are extremely difficult for anyone to obtain. But, after the eighteen years in the Perfins Club, I promise that this will be your one, best opportunity to obtain perfins. President Dick Mewhinney's 70 year world-wide perfin collection is one of the largest known in the world and just maybe the only one older than the Perfins Club itself! Regrettably, Dick is finding it necessary to give up perfin collecting to move to an assisted living home to be able to be with Leona, his wife of 63 years. A high light summary of Dick's collection could use a special issue of the Perfins Bulletin. It is that vast! At present, Dick's is the 4th largest US collection known - well over 5600 patterns! There are many US specialty collections - the largest collection of the US F-1 perfinned "Blue Devils"! There are nice collections of most of the Schermack perfins - parcel post special handling - various issues by Scott number and a comprehensive US synoptic collection. Included are also the wheelchair perforator – US Des49IP and a 25 drawer library card catalog full of perfin duplicates (card catalog available also)! In the last Foreign Perfin census, Dick had the
second largest total number of different world-wide perfin patterns reported so most all countries, large and small alike, will be well represented! ...a 13,000+ pattern Great Britain collection! ...one of only two perfins known from Bushire (with certificate!) Do you even know where Bushire is? ...British underprints and overprints! ...many current and "antique" perfin catalogs! I think you can easily get the idea. If you are looking for anything in perfin material, you are likely to find it in Dick's collection. Although likely five or six monthly auctions will be held beginning in October, 2008, Dick's US collection will be available "immediately" to fill want any lists submitted by members. All perfins rated F through and inclusive of B rated perfins will be offered for sale - F/E @ .10; D @ .25; D+ @ .50; C @ 2.00; C+ @ $4.00 and B @ $16.00 (Schermacks and B-rated railroads not included). Lists will be serviced on a first come, first served basis! A, B+ and unsold B rated will be auctioned individually. Please do not send lists with A and B+ perfins wanted. All lists should be e-mailed to Bob Szymanski [email protected] or snail-mailed to Bob @ 10 Clarridge Circle Milford, MA 01757-1371. To receive all future auctions of Dick's collection, please contact Bob as soon as possible. You will not want to miss this one! Everything will be auctioned!

New Catalog of Perfins of the Netherlands Paul Mistretta (LM#111)
Verhoeven, Jan L. 2007. Catalogus van de perfins van Nederland en OR. 2e Edite Uitgever,:Perfin Club Nederland. 320 p. (€48.00 postpaid [$50.00 postpaid from Dave Lightle;]; in Dutch with English introduction.) This 2nd edition of Verhoeven’s catalog looks physically very similar to the first edition (if you discount the green hardcover [from red in the first edition]). In the same 6” x 8.5” format there are only an additional 18 pages from the first edition. However, in the words of the author: “Compared to the first edition 30 “new” perfins were found, a large number of users of perfins were identified and thousands of perfin-stamp combinations were added. Several errors were corrected... It was unavoidable that certain meaningless codings were renumbered even when these were used by many. It will take some getting-used-to.” Included in this volume are perfins on the postage stamps of The Netherlands, the Netherlands Indies, Netherlands Antilles, and Curacao, the revenue stamps of the Netherlands and Cuacao, and a small appendix of leftovers (patterns that just don’t fit the standard rules (in the introduction) for defining perfin patterns. For the Scott Catalog addicted collector, the catalog information related to the issues in which these patterns are found will be slightly problematic.
Three separate catalogs were used to identify issues: the NVPH catalog (Postzegels van Nederland & Overzees Rijksdelen Speciale Catalogus) is used for postage stamps, the Ten Geuzendam catalog for postal stationery, and the Ensched list for revenue stamps. In addition, the established numbering for perfins dispensed from POKO or Michelius machines are included in parentheses when they apply. So, if you are an issue collector of the Netherlands perfins, expect (as a collector – acceptable) collateral damage to your budget. I appreciate that the patterns are actual size in black on a white background. Patterns are all ‘corrected’ so that the letters are readable as printed, no need for a mirror or standing on your head to figure them out. Confirmed users of patterns are documented with an asterisk; speculation about other users is included without the asterisk. Sequential users of the same pattern are also listed, with the second user name below that of the initial user. Between two and four patterns are illustrated per page depending entirely on how much information relates to the patterns shown. While this catalog is purely a black-and-white book (no color illustrations whatever) with only the patterns for illustration, its value as a research resource is beyond question. The time spent by Mr. Verhoeven has paid off in a beautiful 2nd edition of this sure-to-become-indispensable catalog.
New Catalogs Available Dave Lightle (##3480)
I, have available the new catalog of the perfins of the Netherlands. It is a nice catalog, hard bound and weighs almost 2 pounds.” Postpaid price to Club members is $50. Direct order from the Netherlands is also possible – for €48 postpaid (converts to about $75.50). So, he price from the Club is a real bargain! Also available, as announced last month, is the printed version of the A&C#2 pages for the U.S.

The New Catalog of the Perfins of the Netherlands: Additional Lists
Paul Mistretta (LM#111) In order to make the new catalog of Netherlands perfins more useful for my own collecting I wanted lists to reflect a couple of the specialized areas of Dutch perfin collecting. The first two lists I wanted are naturals for ‘checklist’ development. They are listings of the patterns produced by the two major types of coil perfinning/affixing machines used in the Netherlands; the POKO machines and the
Michelius machines. Existence of perfins created by these two types of machines is noted in the new catalog, but I wanted an easy to use list. I isolated 9 patterns produced by the Michelius devices and 81 produced by POKO devices. The patterns do not overlap, so I created the following two checklists for collectors interested in creating a synoptic collection of those patterns.
Perfins of the Netherlands produced by Michelius machines

And while I was running through the catalog (a couple of times) trying to isolate the specialized machine produced patterns, I was reintroduced to one of my least favorite patterns; that of the
Nationale Bankvereeniging... which is actually a group of virtually identical “N.B./V.” patterns. In this catalog sequential numbers 460 through 552 (#553-555 are sufficiently different that they are
The Perfins Bulletin – May 2008 – Page 84
separable from the larger set) are assigned to these patterns; each of these 93 listings being a (branch bank in a) city of use, presumably with a different perforator in operation in each. I can not generally distinguish these patterns from each other – either the manufacturer of the various perforators did an excellent job creating virtually identical dies, or stamps were punched by a very few dies in a central location and were then shipped to the various branch banks. Whatever the cause of the uncanny similarity of these patterns, the only way I was able to satisfy myself that I was cataloging the stamps properly was to use cancels to identify the city from which the stamps were mailed. Unfortunately many cancels exist with only a part of the city name on the stamp, the remainder having been lost when the stamp was separated from the envelope on which it had been used. To (mostly) alleviate that problem twenty two years ago, almost to the month (1986, the Perfins Bulletin 39:111-117), I published the output from a simple program I had written which systematically stripped one letter at a time from the name of each city and then created an alphabetic listing of all of the partials cross referenced to the full city name from which
they were derived. This is still only a partial solution due to two remaining problems: some fragments can be derived from more than one city name (eg “EM” could be the ending for any of four of the city names involved while “EN” ends 26 of them) and the fragment itself can be from the middle of the name. At the time I first did this (using Enscshede, E. J. 1976. List of the perfins of the Netherlands, Curacao, the Netherlands Antilles, the Netherlands Indies. Utrecht, NED.) the pattern was numbered N9 and there were 104 identified cities of use (and 117 slots for illustrations of pattern N9 varieties). These were identified by the addition of an alphabetic suffix between “A” (Alkmaar) and “DL” (Zwolle). The current numbering of these patterns, plus the differences in the city listing suggested to me that I needed to update the cross reference. So, below are two listings which have come from my attempt to cross reference possible fragmentary city names in cancels with the NBV pattern to which they might refer. The first list shows full city name and the sequential number in the 2nd ed of the “Catalogus de perfins van Nederland en OR”, while the second shows the partials cross referenced to the appropriate sequential catalog number.
