Introduction

1 Introduction The RAM Structural System is powerful and versatile special purpose software for the analysis and design of building structures. It is useful in the design and analysis of commercial, institutional and industrial buildings. The RAM Structural System automates the process of calculating tributary loads, live load reduction, gravity member selection, frame analysis, drift control, frame member and joint code checking, special seismic provisions member and joint checking and foundation design. By automating these tedious and time consuming processes, the engineer can quickly obtain an accurate design. Different framing configurations may be examined in a short period of time, resulting in substantial timesaving for the Engineer and a more economical design for the client. The interface with CAD software permits rapid generation of framing plans, saving significant drafting time and reducing the errors associated with manual information transfer. The RAM Structural System is composed of a number of special purpose modules, each of which is invoked from the RAM Manager. The RAM Modeler provides for the creation of a model of the entire structure, including roof and floor loads; beam, column, brace and wall geometry and locations; and slab properties, openings and edges. Powerful, yet easy to use graphical model generation features are provided which allow complex floor and building systems to be modeled in a short time period. The result is a comprehensive database of building data that can be accessed by the analysis and design modules, providing a completely integrated solution.

2 Using the Documentation The documentation is divided into several distinct manuals, one for each individual module: RAM Manager, RAM Modeler, RAM Steel Beam Design, RAM Steel Column Design, RAM Frame, RAM Concrete and RAM Foundation. In addition there is an Installation manual and a Tutorial manual. The Tutorial example provides a step-by-step guide demonstrating how to create a model, analyze and design the elements in the various design modules and obtain the various outputs. The manual for each module describes each function of the program in greater detail. A technical section is included for each of the analysis and design modules, which explains engineering related issues such as Building Code interpretation and implementation, assumptions, etc. The user should become thoroughly familiar with the documentation. Do not hesitate to call RAM International Technical Support with questions that arise. The staff at RAM International is always willing to spend time answering questions to assure each user understands and utilizes the RAM Structural System to its fullest potential.

3 Installation This manual provides step-by-step instructions for installing the RAM Structural System to the hard drive of a computer system, for programming a single license hardware lock and for setting up a network lock in order to run licensed software modules. An installation program is provided which installs files to the hard drive and provides the user the opportunity to run the RAM Defaults Utility program to set the program defaults. It is strongly recommended that the program defaults be set during the first installation of the program. Once the module is installed and defaults are set, either a single license lock must be programmed with a security program or a network lock must be installed on the network in order to activate the module. Upon successful completion of the installation process, a RAM Structural System group and an icon are created. The RAM Structural System icon is used to invoke the RAM Manager through which all other programs are accessed.

3.1 System Requirements In order to install and run any of the RAM Structural System modules, the computer system on which the modules will be installed must be running Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. If not, it is necessary to first install one of these operating systems before proceeding. A full installation of the RAM Structural System with all modules, tables and help files requires 47 MB of hard disk space, not including the Miscellaneous components that can be installed. Of the Miscellaneous components that can be installed, the RAM Tutorial models takes an additional 6 MB of hard disk space, the Sample Reports take 5.5 MB, and the Manuals in PDF require 10 MB of space. Additional hard disk space is required for each of the databases created by the program. Depending on the size and complexity of the model, each database can require 0.5 to 5.0 MB or more.

Installation The RAM Structural System has been designed such that there are no practical limitations on problem size. It is limited only by the amount of RAM memory, the size of the swap file used for Virtual Memory by Windows, and the available hard disk space.

3.2 Installing the RAM Structural System

3.2.1 RAM Directories During the installation process, all necessary directories are created. Eight such directories are created for the RAM Structural System. The default locations for these directories are shown in the table that follows. These can be changed, however, during the installation process.

The PROG directory: This directory contains all of the executable and help files for the RAM Structural System modules. Under the Prog directory is a Figures directory that contains graphics files used by some of the RAM Structural System reports.

The COMMON directory: This directory contains program files that are shared by other RAM International products.

The DATA directory: This directory contains the databases created by the RAM Structural System modules. This directory may consume a substantial amount of space as more databases are created. If the system on which the RAM Structural System is being installed has multiple logical disk drives on its hard drive, it is suggested that the DATA directory be created on the logical drive that has the most room for expansion. It is also recommended that the data directory not be installed on a network drive as this increases the possibility of data error. If the component containing the tutorial model is selected during installation, the tutorial model files will be placed in this directory in a folder labeled Tutorial. Otherwise, no files will be copied to this directory.

The TABLES directory: This directory contains the tables that describe the Decking Types, Steel Reinforcing, Load Combination Templates, and Steel Sizes available to the RAM Structural System modules. Each module comes with its own set of tables, which are all stored in this directory.

The DXF directory: This directory contains the DXF files created by the RAM Structural System.

NOTE: No files are copied to this directory by the installation programs.

The REPORTS directory This directory contains the error files produced by the Modeler Data Check, the design warnings produced by the design modules, and is the default directory for all reports that are saved to a file. If the component containing sample reports is selected during installation, the sample reports will be placed in this directory in a

folder labeled Samples. Otherwise, no files will be copied to this directory.

The CIMSTEEL directory: This directory contains the CIMsteel files and corresponding log files created by the RAM Structural System.

NOTE: No files are copied to this directory by the installation programs.

The MANUALS directory: This directory is only created if the Documentation in PDF Format option is selected under Misc Components during program installation. By default, it is selected. When present, this directory contains the RAM Structural System manuals in PDF Format. (Note that Adobe Acrobat is required to view these manuals and that it can be installed from the RAM Structural System CD.)

3.3 The INI File All default settings are stored in a file called RAMIS.INI located in the Windows or the WINNT directory. All RAM Structural System modules access this file to determine file locations and program defaults.

3.4 Installation of the RAM Structural System Make sure to log on as Administrator before proceeding with the installation. Some DLLs may not register correctly if the installation program is run while not logged on with Administrator privileges.

1. Insert the RAM Structural System CD into your CD-ROM drive. The Autorun feature will automatically open a window with several menu options.

2. From the menu options displayed, select Install RAM Structural System.

3. The installation program will now begin. Use the Next>, <Back

and Exit Setup buttons to navigate the dialog boxes as described previously.

4. After the introductory screens, there is a series of dialog boxes

which prompt for the location of the directories. The defaults can be selected by clicking Next>, or the directory can be modified by entering a new directory path prior to clicking Next>.

5. Select the desired components from the Select Components dialog

box. Highlight a component to view a brief description on screen.

6. Select the name of the Program Manager group in the Select Program Manager Group dialog box. The default group name is Ram Structural System. Click Next> to begin copying files.

7. After the files have been copied, the Installation Complete dialog

box will appear with the option to set the program defaults. Select “Yes” and click Finish> to kick off the RAM Defaults Utility program, or select “No” and click Finish> to close the installation program. If this is the first time the RAM Structural System is being installed on this computer, you should choose “Yes” and set all defaults. For more information on the RAM Defaults Utility, see Appendix A of the RAM Manager manual.

NOTE: The installation will prompt you to restart if you are not running Windows XP. If you choose to restart later, you may have problems running RAM Structural System until you reboot your computer. At this time the installation is complete. The installation program places a shortcut on the desktop for easy access to the RAM Structural System. However, before the RAM Structural System can be run, either a single license lock must be attached to local computer’s parallel port or a network lock must be available somewhere on the network with the license manager program running.

Installation 3.5 Hardware Locks Provided with all RAM International products is a security device called a hardware lock. This device prevents access to products for which a license has not been obtained. It controls access to all RAM International products, including the 30-Day Trials. Only those products for which a license has been obtained can be invoked. The hardware lock can be reprogrammed at any time to allow access to the additional modules. Before using the lock, it may be necessary to install the lock driver and to program the lock using RAM Security. There are 2 types of hardware locks distributed by RAM International: single license locks that must be attached to the computer running the RAM product, and network locks, which reside on one computer on the network and allow access to RAM products from multiple client computers. Refer to the appropriate section below for instructions on setting up your hardware lock.

3.5.1 Setting Up a Single License Lock

This section applies to Sentinel SuperPro (Single License) locks ONLY. If the words “Sentinel SuperPro” are not stamped into the body of your lock, you can skip this section. If you are using one of the Sentinel SuperPro (Single License) locks to run one of the RAM International products, you will need to install the latest Sentinel System driver and RAM Security

1. From the RAM Structural System CD, select Hardware Locks,

which will take you to a second screen. Select SuperPro Single License Locks from the menu. This will initiate the single license locks installation program. By default it will install both the driver and RAM Security.

2. If your hardware lock is a parallel port lock, attach the lock to the

parallel port on the computer so that it is positioned between the computer and the printer cable. If other locks are already in use on this computer, place the new lock on top of the old lock/s so that it is closest to the printer cable (i.e. farthest from the

computer). If you are using a USB single license lock, attach it to an available USB port.

3. Run RAM Security and select View – Single License Lock from

the menu. If any product that should be activated is not activated, follow the instructions in the online help to activate the product. If multiple locks are in use on this computer, make sure the serial number displayed at the top of the Lock Status dialog matches the serial number in the letter that contains the product passwords. This is only required once for each product. It is not necessary to reprogram the hardware lock every time the software is re-installed.

3.5.2 Setting up a Network Lock There are two types of network locks; NetSentinel-C network locks, which were the first type of network locks used by RAM International, and NetHASP network locks, which have replaced the discontinued NetSentinel-C locks. Net-C locks are gray and have “NetSentinel-C” stamped on the side of the lock. NetHASP locks are red and have “HASP” stamped on the side. Follow the instructions below for the type of network lock you have. Please note that network locks do NOT need to be installed on the network server. They can be set up on any computer on your network.

3.5.3 Setting up a Net-C Network Lock This section applies to NetSentinel-C network locks ONLY. If the words “NetSentinel-C” are not stamped into the body of your lock, you can skip this section. If the lock is being installed on a computer running Windows NT, 2000 or XP, make sure to log on as the Administrator before attempting to install the lock driver or before running the Net-C Network Lock Utilities installation program.

1. Attach the lock to the parallel port so that is positioned between the computer and printer cable, if applicable. If other locks are already in use on this computer, place the new lock on top of the old lock/s so that it is closest to the printer cable.

2. From the RAM Structural System CD, select Hardware Locks,

which will take you to a second screen. Select Net-C Network Locks from the menu. This will initiate the Net-C network locks installation program. By default it will install the driver and all utility programs for the network lock. For more information on each of the utility programs, see the Net-C Network Lock manual in PDF format on the CD.

3. Run RAM Security and select View –Network Lock (Net-C). If

any products do not appear to have the correct number of licenses listed, follow the instructions in the online help to update the license counts.

4. The installation program should have installed and started the

NetSentinel Server. On Windows NT/2000/XP, it runs as the NetSentinel service in the Services Control Panel. As long as it is running and the network lock is activated for the correct products, the network lock setup is complete.

For additional information on Net-C Network Locks, please refer to the electronic manual “Network Net-C Locks.pdf” found on the CD-ROM.

3.5.4 Setting up a NetHASP Network Lock This section applies to NetHASP network locks ONLY. If the word “HASP” is not stamped into the body of your lock, you can skip this section.

If the lock is being installed on a computer running Windows NT, 2000 or XP, make sure to log on as the Administrator before attempting to install the lock driver or before running the NetHASP Network Lock Utilities installation program.

1. If your NetHASP lock is a parallel port lock, attach it to the

parallel port so that it is positioned between the computer and

printer cable, if applicable. If other locks are already in use on this computer, place the new lock on top of the old lock/s so that it is closest to the printer cable. If it is a USB port lock, attach it to an available USB port.

2. From the RAM Structural System CD, select Hardware Locks,

which will take you to a second screen. Select NetHASP Network Locks from the menu. This will initiate the NetHASP network locks installation program. By default it will install the driver and all utility programs for the network lock. For more information on each of the utility programs, see the NetHASP Network Lock manual in PDF format on the CD.

3. The first option for License Manager & Lock Driver will kick off

a separate installation from Aladdin. When the Aladdin installation pops up, click Next to proceed with installing the License Manager. We recommend that when asked whether to install HASP License Manager as Application or Service, you choose the Service option. Be sure to install the HASP device driver when prompted. After the License Manager and driver are installed, be sure to select Yes when prompted to start the License Manager. If prompted to restart, be sure to finish the main Network Lock installation before restarting.

4. After the main installation is complete, run RAM Security and

select View – Network Lock (NetHASP). If any products do not appear to have the correct number of licenses listed, follow the instructions in the online help to update the license counts.

5. The installation program should have installed and started the

Aladdin License Manager. As long as it is running and the network lock is activated for the correct products, the network lock setup is complete.

Installation 3.5.5 Installation of the RAM Structural System when

using a Network Lock For network lock users, the RAM Structural System can be run from a single installation on the network or from an installation on each client’s machine. The RAM Structural System should be installed on all workstations that will be running licensed RAM products. See Section 3.4 of this manual for installation instructions. It is not necessary to install the RAM Structural System on the network lock server. However, for information on running the RAM Structural System from a file server, please see Section 3.6

3.5.6 Running and Exiting RAM Structural System modules when using a Network Lock

The following notes are intended for everyone who will be running a RAM International Software Product via a network lock.

Starting a protected program: Whenever you start one of the RAM International software programs that are protected by a network lock, the application will search the network for the network lock. If found, the application will request a license, and if a license is available for that particular application, the application will start. At this point, you have a user license checked out and the total number of available licenses for that application is reduced by one. If no license is available, or if there is some type of error, an error message will appear. Since the application has to search over the network, this process can take several seconds. Please be patient while the application is searching for an available license. If the process takes more than a few minutes, contact your network or system administrator to determine if the network is operating correctly.

Exiting a protected program: Whenever you exit one of the RAM International software programs normally, your user license is returned to the network lock server and becomes available for another user.

If, however, you crash out of the program (i.e. you receive a “Fatal Error” message and the program closes, or your system crashes and you have to reboot without closing the program normally) the license that was checked out by you remains locked and is unavailable for other users. If your network lock is a NetSentinel-C network lock, you should notify your network administrator who is able to manually delete that license from the network lock server. If your network lock is a NetHASP network lock, you should be able to get back into the program from the same computer. Otherwise, within 15 minutes, the license will be released for use by another user.

3.5.7 Future License Purchases All RAM International hardware locks can be activated at any time to run additional products not initially activated. Upon purchasing the license of an additional product, run RAM Security in order to update the lock with either the passwords (for Single License Locks) or the update file (for Network Locks) provided by RAM International. More information on activating licenses on hardware locks can be found in the RAM Security online help.

3.6 Running RAM Structural System from a File Server

It is highly recommended that you install the RAM Structural System on each workstation of your network that will be running the modules. If you choose to install the Structural System on a file server and have the workstations run from the file server, you will need to follow the steps below. These steps will allow you to install the RAM Structural System program files and tables on a file server, while allowing a user to store data either on the file server or on their workstation.

3.6.1 Install RAM Structural System on the File Server First, install the RAM Structural System on the file server per the instructions in Section 3.4, with the following changes:

1. Make sure the Common Files Folder is located in a shared directory that can be accessed over the network (the default directory is C:\Program Files\Common Files\RAM Common\Prog, which may not be a shared).

2. On the Select Components dialog, make sure to select the Client

Setup Program option. This will place the RSSClient.EXE in the program directory.

Setting up the RAM Defaults After installing the RAM Structural System on the file server, be sure to run the Defaults Utility to set up any customized program defaults for your company. The defaults are stored in the RamIS.ini file in the local Windows or WINNT directory. Copy the Ramis.ini file to the program directory that contains the RSSClient.exe. The defaults in the INI file will be copied to the client machines during the client setup process.

3.6.2 Setting up the Clients to run from the File Server From each workstation that will be running the RAM Structural System, browse to the RAM Structural System program directory that contains the RSSClient.exe and run the client setup program.

1. In the Specify Program Directories dialog box, verify that the path to the RAM Structural System program files on the file server is listed.

2. Next, verify that the Tables Destination Folder correctly indicates

the path to the RAM Structural System Tables on the file server or click Browse and indicate the path to the correct folder

3. Then select the path to the Common Files folder on the server.

(The default location for this directory when installed on the server is in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\RAM Common\Prog, however it may have moved to another directory during installation.) Then click Next>.

4. The remaining folders can point to either the folders on the file

server or local directories, although it is highly recommended

that the Data folder be located on a local hard drive to minimize risk of multiple users attempting to access the same RAM Structural System database. Click Next>.

5. Click Next> one more time to install a few files locally and to

register locally the files necessary to run the RAM Structural System from the client machine.

6. When the installation is complete, a shortcut to the RAM

Structural System is placed on the desktop.

The client setup program copies the program defaults from the RamIS.ini file in the program folder on the file server to the local RamIS.ini file on the client. If the RamIS.ini file was not copied over prior to running RSSClient.exe, the local RamIS.ini file will not contain any customized program defaults and the local installation will use the defaults internal to the program.

3.6.3 Locally Installed/Registered Files The following is a list of files that are installed locally on the client machine in the System directory. (On Windows NT/2000/XP, it is usually the Winnt\System32 folder.)
