Hypothesis

ComponentsThe visor will… block 70% of light and cover 180

degrees clip to the factory installed visor fold into the factory visor for easy

storage fit in front of the field of vision to

shade glare and sunlight.

Justification

8

1. At what times do you usually operate an automobile?

2. Do you become distracted by sunlight while driving?

3. If yes, does it impair your driving abilities?

4. Do you use sunglasses at any point while driving?

5. If yes, have you ever forgotten to wear your sunglasses when you needed them?

6. Do you find sunglasses inconvenient to wear while driving?

7. If yes, why are they inconvenient to wear?

Assembly Procedure

Gather all materials and tools Draw dimensions onto the Plexiglas with erasable marker Cut out the dimensioned Plexiglas Fit the Plastic Edging onto the Plexiglas, so that the

ending goes halfway down the Plexiglas Mark the plastic edging Cut the proper size for the edging Cut out two symmetrical openings into where the hinges

will fit in Line the plastic edging with caulk

18

Page 19: Raj Hirpara Robert Schuld Aakash Soni Bartlett High School 1.

Assembly Procedure (cont’d) Refit the edging onto the Plexiglas Drill two holes symmetrically place between the half

point and the end of each side, where they meet the opening for the hinges

Put the screws into place so that the hinges are locked in place with the Plexiglas

Cut out 4 plastic pieces and cover the holes where the screw went in with the plastic pieces. (glue into place)

Attach onto car visor with hinges

Sun Deflection Test

a. Position car so it is facing the sun through the front windshield.

b. Attach sun visor to manufactured car sun visor. Make sure it is secure.

c. Position sun visor so that it is in between the driver’s eyes and the sun.

d. Positioning yourself in the driver’s seat, look forward through the windshield.

e. Determine if any sunlight is coming through onto your face from either through the sun visor or around it.

21

Page 22: Raj Hirpara Robert Schuld Aakash Soni Bartlett High School 1.

Angular Efficiency Test

a. Repeat steps a-d for the Sun Deflection Test.

b. Determine if light is coming through or around the visor or if the visor is impeding your vision in any way. Note your observations.

c. Turn on the car and rotate it 45° clockwise from the previous position.

d. Adjust the sun visor by angling it and also rotating the manufactured car visor.

e. Repeat step b.

f. Repeat steps c-e.

g. Repeat step c-e again, but this time, turn 45° counterclockwise starting from the original position.

h. Repeat c-e again, but turn 45° counterclockwise again, from last position in step g.

22

Page 23: Raj Hirpara Robert Schuld Aakash Soni Bartlett High School 1.

Safety Test

a. Using the extra Plexiglas available, cut out the shape of the sun visor using a band saw.

b. Obtain circular weights in 5-10 lb. increments.c. Lay the Plexiglas between two pieces of wood.d. Put on personal protective equipment.e. Lay the weights on the middle of the Plexiglas,

one by one. After putting on each weight, record observations about the Plexiglas.

f. Keep placing weight until the Plexiglas breaks. Record all observations.
