Raising The Bar I recently stumbled across an interesting set of questions. They are used by Asian Access (A2), a Christian missionary agency in South Asia, to determine a new convert’s readiness to follow Christ. In the West, we might ask newcomers if they prefer contemporary or traditional worship. As you can see, the questions they ask in other parts of the world are a little different. Here they are: ! Are you willing to leave home and lose the blessing of your father? ! Are you willing to lose your job? ! Are you willing to go to the village and those who persecute you, forgive them, and share the love of Christ with them? ! Are you willing to give an offering to the Lord? ! Are you willing to be beaten rather than deny your faith? ! Are you willing to go to prison? ! Are you willing to die for Jesus? Besides making me feel very grateful for where I live (and slightly guilty for feeling grateful) the questions sounded familiar. I heard an echo of Jesus’ words from Luke 14. You know the passage. Jesus spins around to the people following him and says, “Are you sure you want to do this?” That’s my paraphrase, of course. What Jesus actually said was much worse: “If you want to be my disciple you have to hate your family, take up your cross, count the cost, and give up everything” -- real crowd-pleasing stuff. It’s tempting to dismiss these radical demands of Jesus that seem so harsh. Yet in numerous countries throughout the world today (where Christians and evangelists are frequently jailed and persecuted for their faith) the cost of discipleship is real and costly. Could we benefit from raising the bar in regards to our commitment to Christ in the Christian Church in America? For the most part, we have specialized in doing the exact opposite. We talk about smoothing the path to God and making church life as easy and convenient as possible. What would happen if, like Jesus and A2, we put the hard demands of the Gospel front and center? If we gave people the unvarnished truth of what it means to follow Jesus? If we told them that sometimes following the Carpenter from Nazareth means donning our own crown of thorns? Would it be worth it in the end? Here is the greatest news of all – when our commitment and discipleship aren’t fervent or praiseworthy, God's grace is always greater than our sin and lack of faith. God’s Word states this clearly in 2 Timothy 2:13: "If we are faithless, He (Jesus) remains faithful for He cannot deny Himself." The Holy Spirit continually is trying to deepen our devotion and discipleship to Jesus through the power of the Gospel. When we more firmly grasp the love, sacrifice, and tenacious drive that Jesus had for us and our salvation, this is what empowers our “all- or-nothing” allegiance and faith to grow in our Savior. Let’s encourage one another to “raise the bar” in worship, fellowship, discipleship, service and outreach in the upcoming months. Throughout May we will continue our sermon series titled: “Romans – The Greatest Letter Ever Written.”

Romans is the Apostle Paul’s most detailed, systematic explanation of Christian doctrine. Paul covers the

basics of Christianity:

! Why we need a Savior

! Why Jesus’ death can save us

! How God applies that salvation to us

! What it looks like to live as God’s redeemed people

So Romans is a book with something for everyone: an explanation and defense of Christianity, an exploration

of several important Biblical themes, and application of those truths to a believer’s daily life. Please take a

few moments to read the Biblical references.

Sunday/Monday May 6 & 7 Romans 1:16-17 “No Need to Whisper”

Sunday/Monday May 13 & 14 Romans 7:15-25a “Despicable Me / Jekyll & Hyde”

The Hosts (leaders) of all of the Adult Life Groups will

have their quarterly meeting on Wednesday, May 2

at 6:30 p.m. in the Upper Fellowship Hall. We want

to keep up the momentum of this growing ministry

through the summer months and to plan for even

more growth in the fall!

How many Indian head pennies and other old coins

do you have stored in a secure place in your house

or apartment? Everyone knows certain coins are

worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The

dollar value of a coin is only part of the reason coin

collection is popular. On Thursday, May 3, New

Horizons will learn more about the wide-spread

interest of coin collection when Rev. Michael Volk

presents his program on the subject.

As usual, we will gather at 11:45 a.m. in the Lower

Fellowship Hall. At noon, the group will enjoy a

salad luncheon including rolls and dessert furnished

by the membership. Rev. Volk’s program will follow.

Planning is easier when the number planning to

attend is known - so, please call Alice or Carolyn.

Members with last names beginning A-Mc should

call Carolyn Schrader, 402.331.3833. Members with

last names beginning with Me-Z should call Alice

Downey, 402.493.3944. Guests are always

welcome, so come and join us!

The following students have successfully completed

our traditional confirmation program and will be

reaffirming their baptismal faith and confessing their

life-long commitment to Christ on Sunday, May 6,

during the 11:00 a.m. service:

Jaret Bray

Jessica Bultez

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you

name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the

Father through him.”

categorizing adult Bible studies according to our

Doctrinal, Historical, and Practical Theology. From

there the process will include such things as

publicizing courses to the congregation and public,

creating self-assessment and “tracking” methods

for people to select courses more intentionally, and

Dear Friends in Christ,

Well, as the saying goes “all good things must come to

an end...”, and the 2011-2012 school year is doing just

that! In just a few short weeks we will “graduate”

three classes of four/five year olds, mostly on to

kindergarten. A new chapter in their lives. We wish

them God’s continued blessings as they experience new

adventures, sharing God’s love.

As we make preparations to finish the school year, we

will be enjoying many special events. Our older kids

will participate in preschool graduation on May 17 , ath

wonderful milestone for both parents and students.

Our last days of school will be on May 17 and 18 . th th

The preschoolers will enjoy a “track and field” day,

enjoy a picnic lunch and have a super secret dessert.

In addition to all of this, we will be wrapping up our

portfolios (a snapshot/keepsake of the year) as well as

working on a few more special craft items!

We sadly must say good-bye to some of our long-

standing preschool staff members; Pam Glidewell, Amy

Kochanowicz and Susan Hill. All will be missed

tremendously and we thank them for their many years

of service.

Thank you all for your prayers and support this year

and we ask that you please keep praying! Pray for our

new and former students and their families, for our

teachers and their families, for our enrollment

efforts, for our preparation for classes this fall, and

most of all for God’s blessings on all that we do in His

name and in His place! Happy summer!

In His Service,

In March, I shared that the construction plans for

the new building addition would be going to

bidders and that the Building Committee would

then receive the bids and recommend a

contractor. In April, bids were received, and after

discussion, the Building Committee recommended

to the Mission Leadership Council that the Church

enter into a contract with Meyers Carlisle Leapley

(MCL). MCL completed the existing La Vista site

building in 2007.

The key elements of the addition are two stories of

multi-functional, multi-use space. Connecting both

floors will be a new open stair case with glass

railings. In the west wall, new windows will be

added and the “Beautiful Savior” rock glass artwork

that was previously in the Chapel entrance at our

old building at 90th and Q Streets will be placed in

it. In the east wall, new windows will display the

additional rock glass artwork panels containing a

dove. These were previously in the Chapel as well.

Our architects, BVH, designed a canopy for the

existing east front entrance that was included as an

alternate in the bidding package. Based on the

price provided by MCL for this alternate, the

entrance canopy will be added into the

construction contract. Construction on this portion

of the project will be very noticeable and in a high

use area, but access will be maintained for the

majority of the time. A special feature to this

canopy is Luther’s Seal, which will be placed on the

east side facing 96th Street. This seal, made of cast

stone, will be four feet in diameter and will be a true

testament to the identity of Beautiful Savior

Lutheran Church!

By the time this article is printed, MCL will be on site,

and construction will have begun. The un-striped

concrete pad on where the new addition will go

will cease to exist and the six parking stalls next to

the Lower Fellowship Hall will be unavailable.

Inside, the most noticeable immediate change in

both the upper and lower level hallways, will be the

construction of temporary walls. These walls will

serve to separate the existing building from the new

addition during construction and will remain in

place until the end of construction. The upper wall

will serve as the public gathering place of

information about the project, including

construction photographs. Stay tuned for

something special about the lower level wall!

Canada 2012 is underway! The team is excited

about this year’s plans. This will be our 11 year toth

visit friends in Big Trout Lake, Ontario to teach

children about Jesus through Vacation Bible School.

Of course, there’s a ton of other ministry going on

also, because these people have become as close

as family. We feel like “aunties and uncles” who

come North to visit and they receive us as such.

This year, four of our team members are planning to

take four young people from BTL to a neighboring

community called Wapakeka (Anglin Lake) to

teach children there about Jesus. This community is

connected to BTL by a dirt road. Please pray that all

of the details would come together by God’s

grace, and also pray for funding for this extra week

of ministry.

Please keep the team members and the

community of Big Trout Lake in your prayers: Jeanne

Johnson, Kari and Jaeger Lewis, Mike Jaeger, Stu

Hays, Roxie and Clarissa Meisinger, Jim Lahn and

Bruce MacMillan.

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the

Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to

obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure

of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the

age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT)

Our project for Beautiful Savior’s 50 year is feedingth

those in our community who are in need. We are

doing this by supporting the Tri-City Pantry which

helps people in the Ralston/LaVista/Papillion area,

and also our own pantry at the Grover Site which

helps other people in the Omaha area.

Together, Inc. of Omaha has been supplying our

pantry at Grover with 2,500-10,000 pounds of food

each month. Due to government cutbacks they will

not be able to supply food for us in the future. We

will be taking a look at how and if we will be able to

continue our pantry at its current program.

Currently we are asking if you would donate the

following items:

cereals peanut butter tuna

macaroni and cheese pasta noodles

You can place your donation down by the kitchen

at the La Vista Site or you can take your donation

directly to the Grover Site at the following times:

Monday - 9:00 a.m. - Noon

Tuesday - 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Thursday & Saturday - 8:00-10:00 a.m.

These are the times when someone will be at the

site to let you in. Please do not just stop by and

leave your donations outside the door.

The Tri-City Pantry is in need of the following:

shampoo deodorant dish detergent

toothpaste & tooth brushes laundry soap

Jean at Tri-City tells us that “many clients sometimes

have to choose between being clean or having

something to eat, so we have a real need for

toiletry and cleaning items. They cannot purchase

any of these items with food stamps, so they often

go without.”

You may place your donations down by the kitchen

at the La Vista Site and they will be delivered to the

Tri-City Pantry.

Members, thank you for everything that you have

donated already to this ministry. Please be

watching for more details about our pantry at the

Grover Site in the coming months.

“I thank my God when I remember you” (Phil. 1:3)

for your outpouring of love, support and prayers at

the death of my husband, Dwaine. How can we

feel anything but blessed when surrounded by such

fine Christians. Thank you all!

A special thank you to our three pastors: Pastor Tim

for coming to the hospital in the middle of the night

and offering your beautiful Scriptures and prayers;

Pastor Ryan for hugs, compassion, and prayers.

Pastor Keith for your funeral sermon which offered

tribute, comfort, and most importantly, laughter.

Thank you to the ladies of the church for your food

and funeral service. Thank you to Sharon Odom for

handling all the details as Funeral Coordinator. And

thank you to Ed Hurd and the Beautiful Savior Choir

for rehearsing, leading and directing the mass choir.

What an inspiring and worshipful tribute to Dwaine.

Thank you for all of the memorials. The families’ plan

for them is to build a prayer garden on Beautiful

Savior grounds in Dwaine’s honor. How blessed we

are because of you. You have eased our loss

immeasurably.

You can meet people, learn the Bible, experience

care, deepen friendships, and find avenues for

meaningful service in a Life Group. Beautiful Savior’s

web site has a link that will connect you directly with

adult and youth (HSM) Life Groups. Go to

www.bslcomaha.org and click on “Get

Connected.” From there you will be able to find

every Life Group that submits information. New

groups have recently formed. We urge you to visit

our BSLC web site and the Life Groups link, and to e-

mail or call one or more of the Hosts (leaders) with

questions about their group.

KINDLE stands for Karpenko Institute for Nurturing

and Developing Leadership Excellence. In

congregations it is a leadership development

process for members. It helps them to become

Christ-like servant-leaders in their home, workplace,

church, and community through a collaborative

learning model known as a “cluster” of 4-6 people.

Each cluster meets on its own schedule and

becomes an accountability and encouragement

group. KINDLE clusters are not Bible studies or Life

Groups or action teams. They are adult learning

communities. They come to an end after about 3-5

months, but KINDLE remains a life-long process.

On Saturday, April 28, the three most recent KINDLE

clusters combined to do a Mini Urban Plunge here in

Omaha! They received hands-on experience with 3

different cross-cultural, inner-city ministries over a 12-

hour period that Saturday. Now that these clusters

have completed their process, new clusters are

forming. If you are contacted about participating,

please give it prayerful consideration. KINDLE is

designed to foster and multiply servant-leaders.

Imagine an entire congregation whose members

lived their lives this way—and the impact it would

have on their families, workplaces, congregation,

local community and beyond!

Registration is now open for Beautiful Savior’s 2012

Vacation Bible School. VBS will run at the La Vista

Site June 18-22, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. This year the

kids will see how high their imagination can soar in

the SKY, where everything is possible with God.

Through games, music, crafts, and Bible lessons,

children will find out how they can TRUST GOD no

matter what! VBS is available for kids age 3 through

those who have finished 4 grade. Older students,th

youth, and adults can join the adventure by

volunteering. You can register a child or volunteer

on the form included in this newsletter (page 11, 12),

or pick up a form in the lobby at the La Vista Site, or

go online to our website, www.bslcomaha.org to

find a link. Contact Dina Newsom at

[email protected] or 402.319.7516 with any

questions.

The Grover Site will host a session of SKY Vacation

Bible School in July this year. – more details coming

soon!

! The dates of this year’s “Summer Confirmation

Camp” for all students who will be entering the

8 grade are July 9-13 and 16-20, 2012. If youth

did not attend the Orientation meeting on April

25, please contact Scotte Hansen,

[email protected] as soon as possible!

! Dr. Jim Eckman, President of Grace University,

will be the speaker at the Baccalaureate

service for graduating Ralston and Papillion

High School seniors. The Baccalaureate will

take place at Papillion La Vista High School on

Sunday, May 6, at 7:00 pm.

! Fun BSLC fact – Twelve people spent over three

hours stuffing over 3,500 eggs for our Easter Egg

Hunt on March 31. It took the kids three minutes

to find them all on Saturday morning!

! Did you know that only 4% of apartment dwel-

lers in America attend church? How can we

gave to the treasury for this work.”

Deuteronomy 16:10 “Give God a freewill offering

in proportion to the blessings the Lord your

God has given you.”

Acts 11:29 “The disciples, each according to his

ability, decided to provide help for

the brothers living in Judea.”

2 Corinthians 8:3 “They gave as much as they

were able, and even beyond their ability.

Entirely on their own.”

1 Corinthians 16:2 “On the first day of every

week, each one of you should set aside a

sum of money in keeping with his income.”
