Also this issue, we have some great interviews with fundraisers who are all doing something amazing this year to help charities including Marie Curie Cancer Care, The Disabilities Trust and Arthritis Research Campaign (arc). By holding a Come Dine with NSE fundraising party, youare helping to fund the National Society for Epilepsy’s(NSE’s) essential services for 456,000 people with epilepsy. This is a brand new fundraising initiative from NSE, and youcan sign up now to be one of the first to take part andreceive a FREE apron! There is no typical Come Dine withNSE party – it’s up to you what, where, who and when!

About epilepsyEveryone has a “seizure threshold” meaning that oneperson in twenty will experience one seizure in theirlifetime completely “out of the blue”. Since epilepsy affects1 in 131 people it is very likely that someone close to youhas epilepsy - but you may not know that they have it. NSE

talks to many people who say they prefer to hide theirepilepsy than take the chance of receiving the stigma anddiscrimination which surrounds the condition. We want tochange the public’s perception of epilepsy, and with yourhelp, we will make sure that no-one feels that they are leftto deal with epilepsy alone.

Anyone can develop epilepsy, at any time in their life. Itcan be caused for different reasons, for example, as a resultof a severe head injury or illness like a stroke. On the otherhand, some people will have had epilepsy since birth.

Epilepsy is the most serious common neurologicalcondition. It’s three times more common than multiplesclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and cerebral palsy in the UK.But it is not a single, simple, straightforward condition. There

are around 40 different types of epilepsy, widely ranging inseriousness and complexity. Having epilepsy means that youexperience multiple seizures - and there are lots of differenttypes of seizure. Not all seizures involve convulsions (jerkingor shaking movements), and seizures are far more likely to betriggered by stress and tiredness than flashing strobe lights.

About NSENSE has been busy helping people with epilepsy for nearly120 years. We lead the way undertaking cutting edgemedical research including genetics which we hope willhelp us find a cure for epilepsy.

Every year NSE provides the best available medicalassessment and treatment for over 3,500 people who reallyneed our help. We also specialise in residential care forpeople with complex epilepsy and other disabilities.

Calls to our Helpline continue to increase, with 5,000callers each year, from people with epilepsy and the peoplewho care from them, needing to talk and receive information.

165 trained volunteers with personal experience ofepilepsy provide support and information to around10,000 patients and their families in epilepsy hospitalclinics around the UK.

We talk to thousands of school children to educate themabout epilepsy, with some really positive results;

“NSE’s talk had a powerful impact on the children. The child with epilepsy and her brother no longer getteased. Children are aware that they need to look outfor a child with epilepsy.”

Helping people maintainsocial contact andkeeping in touch with

retired civil servants locally is atthe heart of our activity. Youcan help us to help others byvolunteering. CSRF volunteersfind the experience rewardingand certain out-of-pocketexpenses are paid.

With almost 500,000 people across the UK eligible to benefit from our helpand activities we are always in need of more volunteers. Without the time donatedby volunteers the CSRF would not able to carry out the charitable activities thatbenefit and bring enjoyment to so many retired Civil Servants and their partners.

Why volunteer? Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, explore newavenues and make the most of the skills and experience you have gainedthroughout your life.

Your role will enable you to:• meet new people, get involved with

meetings, outings and events• make the most of your time and

enjoy being part of a team• gain valuable experience and

learn new skills• increase your confidence and

feel positive• feel a sense of satisfaction in

knowing that you have helpedothers.

It’s not only about helping others. Wewill do our best to ensure that you

benefit from your new role as much as we do. Get involved in as much or as little as you like or have time to.We need volunteers to:• help out in local groups• visit retired civil servants, their

widows/widowers and theirdependants

• transport housebound or illbeneficiaries to group meetings

• deliver branch newsletters• promote the CSRF within local

Civil Service offices• set up any fundraising projects.

My role as Events Manager atBreakthrough Breast Cancer is variedand of course busy. There are five ofus who look after Breakthrough’sevents and this includes Runs, UKTreks, Crocus Walks, Parachute Jumps,Bike Rides, Overseas Treks andlooking after relationships withfantastic supporters such as MiddlesexCounty Cricket Club. I never knowwhat is going to come our way next!

I’ve worked at Breakthrough forfive years and this really is my dreamjob. We have so many fantasticsupporters who inspire me each dayto make sure we achieve all that wecan. Breakthrough is the UK’s leadingbreast cancer charity and exists toimprove the lives of people affectedby breast cancer through innovativeresearch, campaigning and breasthealth promotion. Sadly 46,000women and 300 men are diagnosedwith breast cancer each year but withthe tireless support of our fundraiserswe are able to fund Breakthrough’sworld class research, identifying bettermethods for diagnosing breast canceraccurately, developing more effectivetailored treatments and finding waysto prevent breast cancer in the future.

The Events Team are currently in fullswing as we are launching all of 2009’sfundraising events so there’s lots ofartwork to approve and mailings to besent out. Walking events are always a

favourite of mine, with Crocus Walksbeing one of Breakthrough’s mosttreasured events and a great way ofcelebrating loved ones. For those lookingfor something a bit more challenging wehave trekking weekends in some ofBritain’s most beautiful locations, so lotsof arrangements are being made with theprofessional walking company thatorganise these for us.

We’re also getting lots of emailsand phone calls from fantastic peoplewho want to run for us in the LondonMarathon and Bupa Great Run Series. We have a running seminar next weekfor all our runners where they getexpert advice from our team ofvolunteer physiotherapists and athleticcoaches so the team are currentlyputting plans for the evening in place.

Next month we also have twogroups of intrepid explorers heading offon treks in Thailand and India, so we’rehelping them with all their last minutepreparations and answering manyquestions about kit and insect repellent!

For the rest of the day the team areall in the office and looking forward tohearing from our supporters aboutwhat they’ve been getting up to andproviding them with all the help andadvice they need to achieve thefundraising challenges they’ve setthemselves. Together I hope one daywe will achieve our vision of a futurefree from the fear of breast cancer. ra

interview

How did you firsthear about TheDisabilities Trust? In 2000, our eldest daughter Naomiwas diagnosed with Autistic SpectrumDisorder at the age of 28, and sheneeded to go and live in a suitableresidential home. The social servicesin Epsom suggested that Naomimoved to one of The Disabilities Trustautism services in Hollyrood, so wegave them a call and went to have alook around. My husband and I haveworked with special needs people allour lives, so we knew exactly what wewere looking for, and once we visitedHollyrood, we went full steam aheadto get funding for it.

How did the news ofNaomi’s condition firstaffect the family? She had a breakdown in 1994, sothere was a six-year run up beforeshe was diagnosed, and because

Naomi went down hill very quickly,it was a real challenge for thefamily. We have four other childrenand some of them neededcounselling to come to terms withwhat had happened.

What’s life for Naomilike at Hollyrood?Oh she adores it. Her life haschanged so much. In a given week, she’ll enjoy walking, trampolining,horse-riding, dancing, singing, songwriting, attending the Hollyroodday centre. She also does domestic

tasks such as cleaning and tidying herroom - all with the help of the staff.

Do you find the staffhelpful? They are absolutely fantastic. They areall highly trained and know everythingthere is to know about Autism, andhow to care for an autistic personshould they get violent. I can’t praisethem highly enough. During Naomi’stime at Hollyrood, which I call ‘Heavenon Earth’ she’s gone from being on 4psychotropic drugs and thyroxine, down to a very small dose of one.

Does Naomi get on wellwith the other peopleat Hollyrood?Since she moved into one of their

community homes, she has bondedvery well with the other four residents, and they all care about each other. They have their in-house jokes andNaomi has a great sense of humour.

How do you help raiseawareness for TheDisabilities Trust?Back in the 80’s and 90’s I used towork on hospital radio where wemade programmes for differentcharities up and down the country. Istopped this when Naomi was at theheight of her breakdown and itwasn’t until she had been atHollyrood for a few years that Idecided to set up a website - TheBookfiend’s Kingdom – which haspodcast interviews and book reviews,to raise awareness of the issues facedby adults with autism and to raisefunds for The Disabilities Trust.

How does the moneyyou raise helpThe Trust? We have a Just Giving webpagewhere the money raised goestowards improving Hollyrood’sfacilities, and providing specialistsupport staff. This year we hope toraise over £5,000 so they can startto build an allotment garden for theresidents. I also want to raisemoney for the care of adults withautism, so that others can have thesame care and quality of life thatNaomi and others at Hollyroodhave had over the years.

How did you get involved with Marie Curie?I was aware of the local Marie Curie Penarth Hospice in South Wales, as a friend of mine hadpassed away there some time ago. Then about four years ago, I decided it was about time I got fit,and I was looking for a way to challenge my fitness in a way that meant something to mepersonally. I then spotted an article in a local paper saying MarieCurie were looking for people to do a charity trek, and for me, itwas the right opportunity at the right time.

How long have you beenfundraising for the charity?I got involved in January 2007, which is when Isigned up for my first trek, and since then I’vedone two Hospice treks, walked up Ben Nevisand taken part in various races.

Where do you go for theHospice treks? The first one was Mount Toubkal in the MoroccanHigh Atlas Mountains, and then last November I wentto the Sahara Desert. I’m also doing two treks this year –I’m climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in June, and then MountSinai in Egypt in September for the Hospice.

What was your motivation? It was due to how brilliant Marie Curie were with my friend. Theywere so caring and nothing was too much trouble for them. If there issomething such as a good death, then that’s what the charity provided.

Do you fundraise as part of a group orindividually?Generally, I fundraise on my own. Once I got involved with Marie Curie, Idecided I was going to raise enough money to fund the Hospice for oneday – which costs about £8,800 – and I’m about half way there. My familyand friends are all really supportive, even the local gym that I go to have puton fundraising events for me. It’s a lot of organisation, but it’s all soworthwhile, and I’m more than happy to put in that extra effort.

Do you have to undertake a lot of trainingbefore your treks?Yes – absolutely loads! I go to the gym four times a week and I have apersonal trainer twice a week who helps me work out what I need to do to get

Climbing mountains, braving sweltering temperatures, and undertakingvigorous gym sessions - it’s all in a day’s work for Liz Williamson

fit for each trek, as they differ. I also do a lot of weights, long walks up mountains, 10k runs, and half marathons toprepare for the treks. It really is hard work, but it’s nowherenear as hard as what some people have to go through withCancer, and that’s what keeps me going.

What would you say has been yourtoughest trek?I would say Mount Toubkal was the hardest of the two treksI’ve done, because it was such a arduous climb. Althoughwith the Sahara trek there were very early mornings and longdays. There was a point on each trek when I asked myselfwhy I was doing this, and why was I not at home flowerarranging like most 50 year olds! But then I think, I knowwhy I’m doing this, it’s because this money will help people.

Hard work aside, do you enjoy the treks? Oh yes, I enjoy them so much. It’s a great opportunity andit really is life changing. You meet some fantastic peopleand you’re all in it together, it’s such a good experience.

Do you fundraise for Marie Curie inany other ways?My main way of fundraising is the treks, but I do put on myown events to fund them. I’ve arranged events inrestaurants, where I’ve put on a meal and a dance.

Why does Marie Curie mean somuch to you? They are a local charity that provide such a good service. They are very supportive and welcoming to families and theyprovide a homely atmosphere to patients within the Hospice.

Would you recommend otherfundraisers to take up a challengefor Marie Curie?I would definitely say give it a go! You don’t know what youcould achieve until you’ve tried.

UK’s first zero-carbon homeA zero-carbon home that could become a template formore houses in the UK has been unveiled in Kent. Thefour-bedroom property, called ‘Crossway’, situated nearStaplehurst, uses a technique borrowed from 600-year-old medieval architecture to provide what may prove ablueprint for energy-efficient living in the future. When did Bag2schoolget started?Bag2School started in 2000 and waslaunched as a project in NorthYorkshire. We specialise in collectinggood quality second-hand clothes. Thescheme was an instant success, soextra resources were installed to roll outthe model nationwide. Now we operatewith over 20,000 schools throughoutthe UK and we have paid out over £5million to participating schools.

How did Bag2TheFuturecome about?Due to the success of the Bag2Schoolscheme, people were noticing childrencoming home from school with

collection bags and wanted to knowhow it worked and how they could getinvolved. These included churchmembers, community groups andsports groups, who were all interestedin donating too, so we decided to setup Bag2TheFuture for non-schoolgroups. The scheme suits all types ofgroups and organisations, regardless ofsize and also works alongside charitiesin helping them organise clothescollections from corporate supporters.

What types of clothesare you interested in?We collect adults’ and children’sclothing including shoes, bedding, curtains, belts, handbags and soft toys.

The key thing is no Bric a Brac, it mustbe textile related. All collections andassociated administration is completelyfree of charge too - all we ask peopleto provide is motivation!

Which areas do youcollect from?We collect bags from all over the UKand Northern Ireland. We’re also justabout to launch Bag2School inBoston, Massachusetts, and we’reworking in Holland and Belgium wherewe’ve received a great response.

Where do the clothesgo once you havecollected them? The clothes we collect are sold tonumerous export markets throughEastern Europe and also in the area ofthe former Soviet Union. Luna is a lucky 13 kilo grey seal. Atfive weeks old she arrived at theBDMLR Highland Seal Hospitalunderweight and dehydrated. Shewas given fluid and while waitingfor it to go down, hospital staffnoticed there was sand comingback up with fluid. This was not thefirst time we’ve seen this, as sealscan get blocked, so our centremanager Jamie Dyer wonderedwhat she’d ingested.

It turned out to be a balloon.Balloons are a serious hazard forturtles, whales and dolphins, but thiswas the first time Jamie had seenone in a seal. Luna had apparentlymistaken it for food, and she foundout the hard way it wasn’t. Luckily

she was found by BDMLR trainedvolunteer rescuers. She was veryweak, but she is now making arecovery and being fed and caredfor at the BDMLR hospital. Whenwell she will be released back intothe wild where she belongs.

Luna is not the only seal to cometo grief after making contact withman-made objects. In January,BDMLR Medics captured a seal withfishing line hanging out of its mouthand took it to the seal hospital atScarborough. The X-ray discovereda 5cm long fishing hook lodged it itsstomach. This was successfullyremoved and the seal is now beingcared for. In a similar incident a fewyears ago a plastic fishing line

splitter killed an adult bull grey sealafter lacerating its intestines.

However, ingesting is just one ofthe problems. Over the last yearBDMLR has been to several similarincidents. A seal off the LizardPeninsula, for example, was picked upwith oil covered flippers and anotherhad a deep laceration on its neckafter being caught up in discardedmonofilament net. These incidentsare becoming more common andour countrywide rescue teams arebusier than ever picking up sealswho have inadvertently fallen foulof human activity.

If you are walking on a beach andsee a seal in distress please contactBDMLR who will send a team toinvestigate. All our medics arevolunteers who give up their time tohelp marine animals. They have theresources - thanks to publicdonations - to rescue the animalsand take them to special wild animalrescue centres such as the BDMLRHighland seal hospital near JohnO’Groats, Scotland.

Tell us how your group got started?I became a member of the Arthritis Research Campaign in1986 and received their quarterly magazine. Then in 1991there was an article about National Sponsored Hippy Walks, for people with hip replacements, which I thought soundedinteresting. I found out a local branch in Yeovil were takingpart and decided to join in and get sponsored. Thisattracted the attention of arc head office who approachedme about starting a local branch in Wincanton, which Ifinally agreed to do in 1992.

What’s your role within the group?I’m Honorary Secretary of the group, which involvesadministration, publicity and general organisational duties. We use our local newspapers for publicity and often getfree editorial columns and photos. We also send out aboutsix newsletters a year to our members to keep them up-dated with fundraising activities.

Is it members only or can anyonejoin your branch?Anyone is welcome to join our group. At present, we have90 members and a committee of nine, who meet uparound six times a year and decide on our fundraisingactivities. We occasionally have a guest speaker too, whichis open to the public.

What attracted you to arc?I was diagnosed at the age of 46 with Osteo Arthritis and Ihad my first hip replacement when I was 52. The charity istherefore incredibly close to my heart.

How do you help to raise awarenessfor the charity? We hold a variety of events such as coffee mornings, streetcollections, Bingo nights, lunches and auctions. We alsoorganise special summer and Christmas events and we arelucky to be able to do an annual bucket collection atWincanton Racecourse as the punters leave the ground.

Do you only fundraise in your local area?Yes, most of our fundraising is local, however, we do runevents in outlying villages occasionally. Tesco has recentlynominated arc as a charity they support, so we have spenttwo days collecting at their Yeovil store 15 miles away - butvery worthwhile.

What events are planned for this year?We have a packed programme, starting with a bingo night inMarch, followed by a spring coffee morning. We then havean annual flag day, which is a town collection, where wehave anything up to 30 members out collecting in the street. We also have our popular annual summer event coming up,ra

Our volunteers are vital.Without people like you offering their time and support we simply couldn’t raise the money we need to beat arthritis. The Arthritis Research Campaign (arc) wants to make good use of YOUR SKILLS and is always looking for reliable volunteers of all ages in YOUR AREA, no

matter how much time you’re able to spare. Gain valuable experience, get involved and support our life-changing work.

which is held in the garden of one of our group members, where we have cheese and wine, and a raffle.

Do you have a favouritefundraising memory?I would say one of the most hair-raising ones was whenwe organised a sponsored cycle ride from Wincanton toWeymouth in 1996. We had about 40 riders and raised£2,500. It was so tough and the weather was horrendous, but it turned out to be good fun and very rewarding.

How much have you raised for arcover the years? We’ve actually just had a very special event, where wecelebrated raising £115,000. The Chief Executive of arc,

Fergus Logan, came down and all members were invited. We usually raise between £6,000 and £7,000 a year.

What advice do you have foranyone who’s interested infundraising for arc?First of all fundraising should be fun and not tooambitious or you will end up not enjoying it. I alsobelieve that fundraising should be geared towards yourparticular town or village. Organise events which aregoing to be popular and well attended and don’toverdo it or people will get bored with your charityalways asking for money!
