The railway industryThe future of the railway industry is in a growth phasewith the rising demand for passenger and freightcapacity.

In all areas of the world vast investments are plannedto build rail infrastructure to provide safe, efficient andsustainable networks that deliver economic growth.

New passenger and freight rail networks are formingthe backbone of the transport system, linkingairport and cities with high speed and intercity railnetworks whilst urban areas are feeding intomulti-modal local transport networks, such as metroand light rail.

With the increase in rail networks and traffic volumes,passenger and freight trains are increasing their speedand require improved protection. Rail networks androlling stock are inherently safe but accidents dohappen and the highest level of crash energymanagement expertise is required.

Oleo provides crash energy management products andservices at all levels for rail operators, manufacturers ofrolling stock and couplers.

With 1.5 million hydraulic and deformation impactenergy absorption units worldwide, Oleo are meetingthe challenges of higher levels of protection throughinnovative new products and services.

Oleo provides a full range of Crash Energy Managementsolutions, in order to ensure a predictable controlledand safe outcome. All units are tested by Oleo withvalidated mathematical models in accordance withEN15227. Plug in elements are available for Radioss andLS-Dyna finite element software.

The system used by Oleo for the mathematicalmodelling of crash scenarios is approved by aEuropean Rail Authority as being accurate, appropriateand properly controlled. Our Test Facilities areaccredited to ISO/IEC 17025.

Test and ValidationRail projects often require unique trains due to variations ininfrastructure, regulations and operating practices. Neithertime nor cost permit prototype trains to conduct operatingtrials and crash testing, at the same time crash energymanagement systems are increasingly complex. Oleo offerthe unique combination of crash energy managementsimulations using mathematical models that are validated inaccordance with EN15227.

Oleo’s in house test facilities are accredited in accordancewith ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 General requirements for thecompetence of testing and calibration laboratories (UKASaccreditation number 7778).

SimulationOleo has developed 1D Rail simulation software, a powerfulonline application for analysing train collision dynamics.Simulating various collision scenarios including high speedtrain, metro and end stop solutions.

All units are tested by Oleo with validated mathematicalmodels in accordance with EN15227. Plug in elements areavailable for Radioss and LS-Dyna finite element software.

Light RailOleo’s crash energy managementproducts and services are designedfor use on light rail vehicles such astrams, passenger movers and light railnetworks.

Light rail covers a range of platforms(APM’s, Trams etc.) which operateprimarily in urban areas and at airports.

Light rail networks have becomepopular in recent years due to theirlower capital costs and increasedreliability compared to heavy railsystems. Oleo’s new Sentry™ Systemcan supply train builders with costeffective solutions for their vehicles tohelp keep the capital costs down andincrease passenger safety.

The Sentry™ System offers lower price per train set,lower life cycle costs, reduced potential impactdamage with increased passenger protection.

MetroAs urban areas are growing so is the needfor rapid transit systems such as metro,subway and underground networks.

These high-capacity systems provide alifeline between residential and businessareas and run on electric railways oftenin tunnels or on elevated railways.

Rapid transit/Metro systems are typicallyintegrated with other public transportand often operated by the same publictransport authorities such as mainlinestations and buses. Oleo is working withtrain builders and operators on crashenergy management systems for rapidtransport and has developed the Sentry™System to service this growing market – astandard product range.

MainlineMainline trains (or intercity trains) are essential forlinking cities, airports and rural areas together.

Many of Oleo’s crash energy management productsand services are designed for use on mainline trains,such as Oleo’s Sentry™ System, Gas Hydrauliccapsules, Deformation Tubes and Anti-climbers.

Mainline trains operate primarily along exclusiverights-of-way and uses multiple units coupledtogether to form a train. Oleo’s crash energymanagement products are designed for mainlinetrains and offer lower price per train set, lower lifecycle costs, reduced potential impact damage withincreased passenger protection.

High SpeedHigh-speed rail is a type of rail transport thatoperates significantly faster than traditional railtraffic, rolling stock is designed and built to cater forspeeds in excess of 250km/h and dedicated tracksare usually required.

As vehicle speeds increase it is vital that trains havesafety devices which can protect passengers and

the structure of the train in the event of a collision.

Oleo has introduced a range of gas hydraulicenergy absorption devices to support this growingmarket. In addition Oleo’s 1D Rail simulationsoftware allows train builders to run simulationsusing various crash scenarios to select the bestpossible devices for their trains.

Locomotive and FreightOleo’s first buffers produced in 1953 were high capacityenergy absorbing buffers for use on Locomotive andFreight/Passenger wagons.

Using Gas Hydraulic technology Oleo provide a safeand robust solution to protect passengers and cargowith UIC 526 approved Cat. C buffers.

Oleo Cat. C buffers can be fully simulated with 1D Railsimulation software to protect against accidentialevents and collisions.

Oleo Crash Buffers comply with UIC 573 annex F(250kJ and 400kJ), with the reversible element (usingOleo Gas Hydraulic technology) fully complying withUIC 526 Cat. C requirements.

End StopsMany passenger, freight and depot locations areterminal (end of line) situations, on the rare occasionsthe train fails to stop or slow down sufficiently therisk is that it collides with or overrides the end of theplatform/line.

With train velocities increasing and a greateremphasis on the importance of passenger safety androlling stock protection, end stops are an essentialfactor in any new rail project. With over 60 years

experience within the rail industry, Oleo has an in depth understanding of train performance, ensuring efficient and effective end stop solutions are provided to the industry in the event of a train failing to stop. By dissipating the impacting energy through friction clamps, gas hydraulic buffers or a combination of both, each solution is optimised to provide the lowest deceleration rates whilst maintaining minimal installation distances.
