Several issues concerning the expand- ing has been discussed during the past weeks: the ris- ing sealevel threatening the new settlement on Western Harbour, desification of existing structures within the city and the urban sprawl “eating” it’s way into the valuable farmland. 4 3 2 1 Looking into densyfying along an already established connection, the cyclepath between Malmö and Oxie, in order to limit the uncontrolled sprawl. The area is about to be taken over by area intensive businesses such as transport companies and cardistributors. The ringroad also has an impact on the area. Cutting through the landscape, with only one possible cross- ingpoint for walkers and bicycles, it clearly states that this is not a place meant for people to stay. To avoid the area to becom a monoculture of asfalt and business, it needs to be claimed. Claimed in the sens of inhabiting, making a mark, testing out it’s posibili- ties, limits and boundaries. In order to make this area accessible to be “claimed” by the Malmö population, it must be made habitable for people, both travelling and staying. Flash mobs are in their very essence rhizom- atic. A leaderless mass event, dissolving as quickly as it appeared. Acts may not be polit- ically or idealogically founded - often just for fun - but they still represent a need to make an expression in public space. #1 / NEW HIERARCHIES NEW CONNECTIONS 1:20 000 existing alley birch alley existing bike path forest trail new path forest 1 2 3 1 2 3 course: city as biotope site: malmö, sweden teachers: 70 0 N arkitektur, dahl&uhre Ragnhild Roald masterstudent fall 2009 Bergen school of architecture, BAS cityasbiotope.blogspot.com SECTIONS NATURE INC.INVERTED MAP OF MOVINGTHROUGH INDUSTRIAL LAND timeline 5 years 15 years 30 years 50 years 100 years Optaining CO2 in the process of growth establishing the new landscape cleansing the soil annual changes in the landscape the ground is prepared for unknown interventions sunflower rapeseed poppies lavendar new experiences shrubbery low trees some singular trees low, compact forest tall, singular trees low forest composting trees release CO2, which is obtained in fungi and microorganisms Seasonal change park agriculture unbuilt densify by planting densify by building keep open DENSIFYBY BUILDING Increase hight Infill Parking houses Shared ground fascilities DENSIFYBY PLANTING New connection Plant forest Infill/onfill OPENING UP Claim open area Cleans soil Public ÖSTRA HAMNEN FOSIE INDUSTRIBY 3/5 HARD SURFACE 2,53 km2 = 58% 2/5 PERMEABLE SURFACE 2,53 km2 = 42% 1/5 ROOFS possible reduction TOTAL AREA 4,36 km2 CITY / PERIPHERY EUROPE SEA EUROPE MAIN INFRASTRUCTURE 8,3 km surrounding road CENTRAL LOCATION reachable in 30 min by bike ROSENGÅRD 20 000 people RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL AGRICILTURE SUBURB FREDRIKSBERG GÅRD ALLOTTMENTS ÔRESTADS RYTTER- FÔRENING PRISON KUNGSHÖGEN GULLVIKS- SKOLAN AGNESFRIDS GYMNASIUM MALMÖ FOLKEHÖGSKOLA CHURCH FREDRIKSBERG JUNCTION INNER RINGROAD DENSIFICATION ZONES Today, only 30-40% of the plots are uti- lized for buildings, althought they mo- nopolize a lot of land, and to great ex- tent decide the use of the whole area. Increasing the pres- ence of nature by densification of typolo- gies. The work on establishing, or finding, these edges lead to the development of a zoning map deciding where, and how to densify. TYPOLOGY The area is characterized by enclaves, or islands, of uniform programs. Together with the outer ringroad, Fosie industriby acts as a boundary between the city and the surrounding agricultural area. SCENARIO Malmö is growing. With an estimated need of 100 000 new dwellings, filling in the narrow streach between Fosie and suburb Oxie is a possibility. When facing the future, could the area be looked upon avsa frontier - a meet- ing place or point of contact - a common ground, rather than the limiting and ex- cluding boundary it appears to be? INVERTED MAP Apply a new layer connecting the green structures. The red sites are points of interest; diverging programs that could work together with, or benefit from, a new public layer of semi-natural character. PLAN SECTION PLAN SECTION PLAN SECTION 1 2 3 In the zonemap, different zones are dis- tributed according to their relation to the connectiong green area, and each other. A combination of densifying by building and densifying by planting, will establish edges along the open area. Enhancing the presence of open fields of productive and recovering land in the middle of the industrial area. NEW CONNECTION A forest is established on the rim of the zones, densifying by planting. The forest is spreading in between the buildings., and a trail through is established to make it accessable for all, creating a crosscon- nection between the existing bike paths running through the area. Streaching all the way through the area, you could actually take a 3,5 km walk in the forest. A shorter more efficient path is also established, running inbetween the zones and open fields. The path is al- ligned with alleys of birch trees.
