Overview ‒ In some research fields Web of Science (WoS) based bibliometric analysesperformed by CWTS do not provide a complete picture, because

- WoS does not cover all fields of science equally

well

- The analyses are based solely on journal

articles and reviews found in WoS

‒ For this reason the library carried out its ownanalyses for all 57 RUs, which covered theentire publishing output of each unit

‒ Content of the analyses

- Production of publications

- Quality of publication channels

- Collaboration based on publications

- Language of publications

Production of publications

‒ The analysis describes the yearly

distribution of a RU’s publications into

different publication categories

‒ The publications have been classified

into categories using the publication type

classification of the Ministry of Education

and Culture

‒ Figure 1 describes the distribution of all

publications into the main categories

‒ Figure 2 shows the distribution of peer-

reviewed publications into the scientific

publication categories


The analysis may answer:

- What is the RU’s trend in

publication output?

- Does the RU also reach the

general public?

- How much does the RU publish

in scientific journals (only these

can be used in CWTS analyses)?

- Etc.

Quality of publicationchannels

‒ The analysis is based on the PublicationForum (JUFO) which is a Finnish rating and classification system of publications

‒ JUFO takes into account the differentpublishing cultures by including journals, book series, conferences and publishers

‒ Three-level classification

1 = Basic2 = Leading3 = Top

‒ In addition, publication channels that do not fulfill level 1 criteria are rated as level 0

‒ NOTE: Starting from the year 2015 the quota calculation criterion is the publication volume of the series or journals, no longer the number of titles

-> The change caused a marked decrease in the number of level 2 and 3 publication channels in some disciplines from 2015 onwards

Collaboration based on publications

‒ The analysis describes a RU’s

collaboration activity based on the

affiliation information found in peer-

reviewed publications

‒ The analysis shows the amount of

different types of collaboration for each

unit per year

‒ NOTE:

- If a publication is a product of both international

and national collaboration, as well as

collaboration within the university, it is listed

under all these collaboration categories

- The total number of peer-reviewed scientific

publications is indicated with the green bar



- With whom does the RU publish?

- Has the RU published together

with other units of the University

of Oulu?

- What kind of trend the RU has in

international collaboration?

- Etc.

publications

‒ Figure 5 shows the distribution of

‒ Analysis of the online visibility of

publications based on altmetrics

information

- Altmetrics describes how often journal articles

and other scholarly outputs like datasets are

discussed and used around the world

- The Altmetric Attention Score is the main

indicator of altmetrics: It shows how much and

what type of attention a research output has

received.

- In RAE2020 only publications that have DOI

identification in the publication data are used in

the analyses



- Does the unit have publications

which has got a lot of online

visibility?

- Which publications have received

a lot of media exposure (=news

mentions in analysis)?
