RECYCLINGmetallic waste
Un traitement des déchets respectueux de l’environnementWaste processing to protect the environment
www.socodei.fr
Objectives and scope
Socodei has the assigned objective of recycling amaximum of the steel processed at Centraco.
This objective is warranted by economic considerations— scrap steel constitutes a reusable raw material —and covered by a legal framework — legislation passedby the French parliament in July 1992 requires industrialfirms to recycle their waste and restricts the disposal ofall but ultimate waste forms — subject to mandatorycompliance with stringent safety and radiologicalprotection standards.
Socodei thus fabricates a line of manufactured productsfor the nuclear industry to meet the needs of nuclearoperators.
Description of service
Socodei provides the following services for steel melteddown at Centraco:
• recycling by centrifugation,
• cleaning and surface preparation (cooling, cuttingand shotblasting),
• assembly and fabrication of finished products,
• preparation for shipment.

Reusable products
The finished products are recycled from melted scrapmetal. Tubes produced by centrifugation are used forthe following purposes:
Integral radiological shields:• length and outside diameter: 100 cm,• thickness: 4 cm or 7 cm,• upper and lower covers: nonradioactive steel,• integral stirring bar.
The radiological shielding elements are designed forincorporation in concrete shells to form shieldedcontainers.
Shielded metal drums:• height: 110 cm,• outside diameter: 70 cm,• thickness: 3 cm,• upper and lower covers: non-radioactive steel.
