The thaw has begun on gooddisco records. Not since mid -November have we had asmany strong products.Springtime is approachingwith many new offerings.High oh the anticipation list isthe new Barry White album, which has been delayed untillate February. Similarlydelayed is the Disco -Tex andthe Sexolettes album. BobCrewe and Kenny Nolan'sbusy schedule has pushed upthat release date one month.
But the discos do have someincredible new items to workwith. New artist VernonBurch, who at 19, is anaspiring "sex symbol." Hisexciting album, "I'll Be YourSunshine" (United Artists),has an easy four good up -tempo cuts. Watch forVernon, easy cross -overmaterial .
The item for spring is theGloria Gaynor album. Her 18minute medley of Honeybee,Never Can Say Goodbye, andReach Out I'll Be There isabsolutely astounding. Thereaction is very high.
Tony Camello, obviouslysparked by the expression"Dy-no-mite," penned anelectric instrumental soon tobe released by ABM. It's goodto see this label venture into -new markets. I'm sure theywill bring all of theirexpertise to the front to makethis single reach its fullpotential.
It's nice to note that thediscos broke a record forthree of the most talented andlovely ladies in the business."Lady Marmalade" isexpected to go Gold by theend of winter. Not a greatsurprise to many is that theirlive performance on stageexceeds the energy that canbe felt from their album"Nightbirds" on Epic.
Something interesting tonote is that 8 or 9 of the top 20pop records in the countrythis week have receivedsubstantial play in the discos.
Listen for some newsounds, either in style orapproach by these artists:Taj Mahal in a new re -mix of"Why Did You Have ToDesert Me" (Columbia),Robert Parker's "Get TaSteppin' " (Island), and Isisversion of "Bobbi & Maria"

by Candy TuskenThe picture to the right is vintage April, 1952, and Al Martino,
like good wine, ages well. He is still the handsome, slim singer whohas the heartthrob of teenage girls back in the fifties. I had a chanceto talk with him last week in his Beverly Hills home about his newsingle "To The Door Of The Sun" and his future plans. The single isbreaking out nationally, radio -wise, and he and his publicity firmare planning a full scale 'come -back' club tour to commenceFebruary 18th at the Palmer House in Chicago. A "high visibility"TV exposure campaign is in the works, so you'll be seeing a lot of Alin the weeks to come. His new single broke out of Hartford due to thesingle handed efforts of Capitol promotion Manager, Mery Amols, who had heard the original version, all in Italian, and felt it was a
perfect vehicle for Al. "We couldn't get the foreign licensing rightsto record the song in English" said Al. "There were so manyproblems with the record, that the project was dropped all together. Then the original artist decided to record the song in English. Itdidn't do anything when it was released as they had shortened it andtaken the 'guts' out of it. But it then became public domain so I wasable to record it." Al, who is an old promotion man himself yearsago with 20th Century Fox Records, said "some people are sayingthis is a regional Italian hit. But, I don't believe in 'regional hits.' I
can understand a song in China not making it in Russia -- There's alanguage barrier! But if a song is a smash in Nashville, it will be ahit in New York or Seattle, everywhere." Looks like '01 SpanishEyes is back in good company with Paul Anka, Frankie Valli, BobbyVinton and Neil Sedaka all riding in on the 'come -back' trail...
DYLAN TELLS KMET TO "CLEAN" UP THEIR ACTLast week KMET's two to six personaltiy, Steven Clean, was
playing a cut from a three year old National Lampoon albumwhich was a parody of Bob Dylan. Steven did a little rap about thecut and a few hours later the station's General Manager, DavidMoorehead, received a 'cease and desist' order from Dylan'sattorneys to legally block the "commercial" from being re -aired.According to Moorehead Dylan was apparently listening to Stevenand thought the cut was an actual commercial by KMET parodyingthe singer. Moorehead immediately called Dylan's attorneys andexplained that what the famous singer had heard was a cut off anold album and was not a commercial conducted by the station. SaidMoorehead "I just find it hard to believe that Dylan wasn't aware ofthe album and hadn't heard the selection before. Everything wasstraightened out and at least Steven found out that he has a famousfan who listens to his show! Caribou Management will no longerrepresent Three Dog Night, but will continue their association withThe Beach Boys and Chicago ... Rumors are that the Caribou Ranchis up for sale with the price being in the millions...
ACTOR MAKES PROFITON OLDIE BUT GOODIERichard Harris was in town promoting his new album on Atlantic
Records, "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran. It took Atlantic eightyear to get rights to the. book for recording purposes and hadadvance sales of a quarter of a million prior to release. This isHarris' third narration album and he told me the cost of the albumwas around $300,000, making it the most expensive spoken wordalbum ever recorded. Harris is back in the States for a radiopromotion tour and will again appear on Syndicated TV talk showsnarrating some selections from the album. The single has beenshowing some radio play throughout the country and Harris is quitepleased with the reception. The actor -singer has enjoyed tennationally charted albums in the states in the past and at one timehad three of them all on the charts at once. He is an astutebusinessman and while we were at lunch, performed hilariousparodies of record company presidents that he has dealt with. He isas handsome and debonair in person as he is on screen and islooking forward to getting back into the recording business again...Bang's National Promotion Director, Wynn Jackson and his wife,Susan, have a new addition with a brand new baby girl being born onJanuary 21st weighing in at seven pounds, eight ounces. Wynn hasnamed her after the famous "Mandy," with her formal name beingthe musical Amanda Lynn (a mandolin, get it!?) Gregg Allmanjammed with Etta Jameson her opening night at The Troubadour inLos Angeles. He enjoyed himself so much, he decided to play theentire engagement with her...

RECORD INDUSTRY PROFILE:
Bob Sherwood -- ColumbiaBOB SHERWOOD, AssociateDirector of National Promotions,Singles, Columbia RecordsBORN: February 24thBIRTHPLACE: Pasadena,California (in the shadow of the RoseBowl)SIGN: Pisces
When Bob was in High School theonly two things he ever wanted to bewas the first baseman for theDodgers or a play by play sportsbroadcaster. "My whole life wasinvolved in Sports, but I was neverreally that great. I always got by ondetermination and stubbornness... I
was not a natural athlete. I havealways been one to admit that theDodgers suggested it was not a goodidea on my part to want to play fortheir team ... anything else, be it anuclear physicist, but not baseball. Icould have signed a contract, but I
would have been in Broken Dump,Iowa riding buses for ten years. Sothat left radio.
I had the absolute minimum ofradio training at USC, but JackCarney, one of the great jocks of alltime, was at KSFO in San Franciscoreally encouraged me. He's the onewho really pushed me into radio. I
had a friend, Stan Stathem, who wasdoing weekends at KMYC inMarysville who landed me a salesgig there. It allowed me to hangaround the station and be a go-fer forthe jocks. I used to practice at nightin the studio with Stan and finallymy first break came ... I did theShakey's Pizza Hour (they used tobuy a whole hour of Polka music!)Whenever I need humility, I listen tothat first tape of me on the air. Itwas, without doubt (and I'll put it upagainst anybody) the worst momentin broadcasting history. I wasabsolutely horrible. But it didn'tseem to hurt me because who listensto a Shakey's Pizza Hour? Not evenShakey does! But being a smallstation, they took anyone as long asit was a warm body, so I got theweekend gig. Within a month I
landed morning drive and havingthe gift of gab, I did well in theratings. But the stationdeveloped financial problems, so I
went over to KAOR-Oroville, did atalk show and became the musicdirector. Then I went to KPAY-Chicoand did seven to midnight. After acouple of years of this, I got my bigbreak in 1967 and went with a majormarket station, KROY inSacramento. It was the rocker thereand I ended up doing all the shifts atone time or another.
Rick Carroll was PD at KROYthen and when he left, I became theMD. I won the Gavin Award for BestSecondary Market MD of the year. I
was then made the PD and for thenext year and a half we enjoyed thegolden years of ratings in thetwenties and thirties plus achievingthe highest billing ever for thestation. We had a great station and Iworked for the best generalmanager in radio, Dwight Case whois now the killer Vice President atRKO. Robert W. Morgan used to bethere along with Bobby Mitchell,Emperor Hopkins, Jack Hammer. We even knocked out Drake's KF RCthat beamed very strongly intoSacramento. While I was there, wenever really had any superstars;they had all gone by then. But wehad station imagery and that madethe magic of KROY. We used to sitaround in jock meetings and thinkup unusual promotions to involve thetown itself in. One of our off the wall
ideas was to have a snowmanbuilding contest in the middle ofAugust. We hauled the snow in twodumptrucks down from themountains and it turned into thebiggest snow ball fight in history --
Sherwood with Candy Tusken.
5,000 people came. We started a drugcampaign by turning the music offfor two and a half hours with theusers and narcs all cloistered indifferent rooms talking live on thephone. It was a devastating special. You couldn't do anything inSacramento without KROY beingpart of it. We once ran LamontCranston (The Shadow) for Sheriffand almost pulled it off! It was themost community minded stationI've ever seen.
I often wonder why I left, but I
really had gone as far as I could withKROY and I needed a newchallenge. I had been there for fouryears. I got the opportunity to workwith Bob Collins at WRIT inMilwaukee and jumped at thechance to compete with GeorgeWilson at WOKY. He was tearing theplace apart. I went in as AssistantPD -Promotion Director and got themost serious licking of my life.Everything that worked inCalifornia did not work inMilwaukee. My jock stuff, whichwas probably great in Sacramento, just did not happen as well inMilwaukee. It was a good lesson tobe learned and I did have a greattime there. We had a lot of fun. Thenthe opportunity came in Cleveland(another high point in my life!) withGeneral Cinema Corp. They ownedWGCL in Cleveland which wasbasically an automated progressivestation and they decided to rock it.That very brilliant and delightfulJohn Rook was very kind about arecommendation and I became thePD. I did my number. I flew in like agood new PD and listened to WIXYin my motel room. I determined thatthere was a whole segment of thepopulation that wasn't being servedby what was going down musically. Ihad always wanted to try a hybrid ofthe KROY formula -- towninvolvement, but a more hip musicalplane. It was perfect because WIXYhas always been involved andWMMS was very hip. I decided touse the best of both.
WGCL was an FM and had thesecond highest FM penetration inthe country, so I thought If everthere is a time to move, it's now. So Iput a new format together. BasicallyI surrounded the newer material oralbum product with the familiar
stuff. Almost every sweep had goldcoming out of a commercial set intoa new album cut or a just developingsingle. Then I went into an A or Brotation, one of the hot singles. Thatway we never went for more than 3to 5 minutes without strongfamiliarity. We were giving morethan WIXY, but we were morefamiliar than WMMS. The guys atthe station worked their butts off forme. I always will be grateful tothem. We had a sharp increase inratings and billing and a sharpdifference of opinion betweennational management as to wherethe station was going and how to getthere. I felt I had to continue to dowhatl had said I was going to do. I
just couldn't go back to the jocks andtell them that I didn't believe in thatanymore. The management said"you will change" and I said "Iwon't" and they said"goodbye, wehave someone to take your job." It'salways been a majordisappointment to 'me because wereally were doing well. We weretaking on the legendary rocker anddoing a number.
It was at that time, the low point ofmy radio career, that Cal Rudmancalled me and suggested I call StevePopovich. Columbia's NationalSingles Manager, .George Brewer, had just passed away. He had beenbrought in from radio by Steve in thebeginning. I had always had greatrapport with the Columbia people nomatter where I was and I had a highregard for them.I decided if I wasgoing to get into records, I wanted togo with the Pros. Steve offered methe job and I "bit the bullet" for tendays. I really thought about it. I
decided I really wanted the job and Iwouldn't have left radio for anyoneexcept Steve. That was May of 1973.After a year, I was promoted toAssociate Director of NationalPromotions for singles. Working forSteve has been fantastic. He's amadman. He would call me up atthree o'clock in the morning allexcited about a new record. I didn'tmind as he was so genuine andhonest that I would get caught up inthe excitement. The bottom line isthat I don't miss radio as much as Ithought I would. I do miss thepersonal satisfaction of motivatingthousands of people to communityaction like we did at KROY -- it wasan upper. But I am actually closer toradio now as I travel to stations allover the country. I have rapportwith them and can understand theirproblems. I can relate to them andget my records played, which is myjob.
It's obvious the record businesshas changed over the years. Oldtime relationships don't seem towork. The playlists have shrunkbecause radio has become morescientific in its approach to find outwhat the hits are. The guys don'trely on their ears anymore eventhough they may be musical. Theyhave to approach their jobs on amore scientific level. They're intotheir research and their systems. I
don't like to see this as I want to getmy records played. It's veryfrustrating to have a record you feelin your guts is a hit and it's breakingout where played and you still can'tget the damn thing played in anothermarket. You can go into ToddWallace, bite the building, tear uphis furniture, but if he doesn't thinkit's a hit, friend or no friend, he

R&R: Are you happy with WarnerBrother Records --is the distributionand service good with them?
MANCUSO: We're happy now.Let's put it this way -- we're happiernow than we've ever been before.
R&R: What were the problemsbefore and why are you happiernow?
MANCUSO: We're happy with thechanges that have been instituted inthe past few months, promotionalchanges specificially, through GaryDavis who heads the PromotionDepartment. We're very happy withGary. It's a business now ratherthan a boogie. We used to getboogied, but he's got the people inthe field becoming business peoplemore so than that "star" attitudethat a lot of them had before.
R&R: What do you- mean by"star" attitude?
MANCUSO: They had the attitudethat they were the stars instead ofthe people they were promoting. After all, a promotion person, whenhe accepts the responsibility toserve an area geographically orwhat have you, they owe the artist, the writers, the publishers and awhole lot of other people who dependupon them. They are it. If a
promotion man who has been in thearea and has only got the jobbecause he can get the nationalpromotion director laid; if that'swhat he considers to be a goodpromotion man, forget it. That's allwater over the falls. It's no longerlike that.
PAPALE: It feels good from allaround because they are moreconscientious. Like any staff, thereare some holes, but that'sunderstandable.
R&R: Right now promotion has tobe important to you with Tull'ssingle. He obviously has to beexcited to have a hit after the whole"Passion Play" episode. Did he feelfrustration or anger over thetreatment of the press to "PassionPlay?"
MANCUSO: I think he was veryupset that people didn't accept"Passion Play" for what it was. Itjust went over a lot of people'sheads.
R&R: I remember thediscrepency between the audiencereaction and the critic's review of"Passion Play." The audience I sawin L.A. loved it, but Hilburn(L.A.Times) tore it apart.
PAPALE: Are you familiar withElliot Murphy? He's an incrediblelyricist from New York, young cat,and he wrote a song quite similar toBilly Joel's "The Entertainer," notas punchy. But, it's basically a songabout how the Rock 'n Rollers are atthe mercy of people who are not intomusic. Like the Robert Hilburns. I
admire him as a journalist as hewrites quite well. He writes betterprobably than anyone of us herecould, but he Is not an open mindedindividual. If it's not hard heavy"cock rock," then forget it.
MANCUSO: He's a faggotworshipper. David Bowie, Lou Reedand The New York Dolls are hisfavorites.
PAPALE: Which is fine. It'sexcellent music, but If you're goingto be a contemporary music criticfrom Hilburn to Al Rudis in Chicago, whoever it may be, to the personthat Ian sings about In "OnlySolitaire" to Steve of Musical World
A ConversationWith Chrysalis
By Candy Tusken
From left, Chrysalis staff members: Mike Papale, Fred Mancuso, Donna Siani, Derek Sutton.
Express... if you're going to be thatkind of music critic, you've got to goto a concert completely blank ofprevious conditions and just sit thereand absorb it. But if you are there tointellectualize, you have toremember that first of all eightypercent of those people that arethere are groovin' and half of thoseeighty percent are so stoned outanyway, that they just go byemotion.
R&R: How much does a reviewaffect you either positively ornegatively? Does a review affectyour sales that much? Can youmeasure it?
MANCUSO: Definitely. Positivereviews you feel less of a reactionthan a negative one. A negativereview will cause a set 'ofcircumstances. If a buyer walks intoa Tower Record Store and he's justread a negative review and sees thealbum in question surrounded byfour or five others, like the Stones,Lennon and several other veryheavy albums, then he is not liable topick up the Jethro Tull, unheard, and purchase it whereas if there wasnothing written about it, then hewould be more liable to pick it upand listen to it.
R&R: Are you as a companygoing to try to get more into singles?
MANCUSO-PAPALE: No. We'lltry to get more away from it!
PAPALE: We've found that withalbum product, it's not only moreprofitable, but people are moresensitive to music when you'redealing with albums as they are.
R&R: You have been breakingyour records mainly on the WestCoast; why is that?
MANCUSO: I think it's a matter ofmental awareness and the level ofconsciousness. Once you leave theocean and the mountains and you getinto the industrial segments, youfind things just happen differently. The environment here is just moreconducive to our type of music ... It'smentally stimulating.
PAPALE: We also have a morelimited access to promotion In theMid -west and South. In the Mid -westthere are very few cities. Forexample, in Minneapolis, you onlyhave one outlet for album exposure
which is KQRS (which is the onlyprogressive station.) We can break alot of our product out of Detroit andChicago, but in the South you reallyonly have two cities ... Miami andNew Orleans as far as album outlets.I think the ideal example of a
progressive radio station is WSHEwhereas they are still progressive inthe sense of the word, they're popprogressive. They're not KLOS, butthere is nothing wrong with that.
PA PALE: You get a lot ofsituation like a KSAN in SanFrancisco who play what they likethemselves. The jocks play what theywant. They don't care aboutanything else. They have nocompetition. If they want to get intoa Jazz kick or play Soul music, theyplay it because they are really notcompeting with anyone else.Whereas in a lot of other marketswhere you have two or three stationsthat are competing very heavily forthat 18 to 34 year old target, you finda lot of differences. I'm reallygrateful that KMET and KLOS inLos Angeles are competitors andentirely different radio stations. Itreally helps us a lot. They both dovery, very well. KMET wasinstrumental in breaking RobinTrower as was KSAN. If KSAN getsbehind an artist, they'll explode it.
MANCUSO: And if they don't getbehind it, they don't care if It's thenumber one selling album in thecountry. If they don't feel likeplaying it, they won't.
R&R: Somewhat like a KKDJsituation. They'll play it if it fits intotheir format and fits their sound.
MANCUSO: That's a perfectexample. We had five weeks ofairplay on Tull at KHJ, and wedidn't have KKDJ or KEZY on therecord.
R&R: What do you think about theidea of playing records strictly byrequest action?
MANCUSO: Well, we could sithere with a host of ten people andmake ten phone calls apiece andcould garner a hundred requests. So Itdefeats their exact purpose becausethere is a way of doing everything. We could hype store reports, wecould hype phone requests. We coulddo everything if we wanted to. It's
simply ridiculous. I think theresearchers have outresearchedthemselves. They don't haveanything to go on except what ishappening in the market place. Sothey wait for everyone else to sell arecord for them. In fact, I don't seeany R&B stations playing any whiterecords, yet you see all theTop 40stations playing off of what is sellingin the market place directlyattributed to an R&B situation or acountry situation.
R&R: KGFJ has been playingwhite records lately.
MANCUSO: They're going tochange.
PAPALE: They're out of _thepicture as far as R&B goes.
MANCUSO: They got whipped sobadly by KDAY that they are goingto have to change. They should dosomething else with that stationbecause they've been so out of tunefor the last two years.
PAPALE: They needed to getbeaten badly to straighten up. KKDJis a good radio station -- a good teenstation. They really are, but I havecompassion for those Top 40 catsbecause they have a very hard job. They have outresearchedthemselves because they haveremoved all the sensitivity fromradio, from communications, frommusic. They seem to forget that thepeople listening have no idea whatthey are talking about when theytalk to their peers about research, requests, etc. We have found now inworking with "Bungle In TheJungle" that there Is a handful ofpeople who will not add a recorduntil it's like top 20 in the country. The WLS's and in some odd caseslike WHB in Kansas City, KXOK inSt. Louis. That's where they're at.That's how they want to programtheir stations and that's fine. But,the people that do add records, notthat they're any betterprogrammers, but they seem to be,in fact, more successful. WLS issuccessful, but that's just theirpolicy too. But like Jay Cook. I thinkhe's a fine example of being a streetradio programmer. He Is a
statistician, but he programs for thestreets. And that Is just somethingyou can never get as a statistician.
It's like a talent that you have tohave as a radio professional. That'swhat I think we're involved in. Notonly does the record business haveto change its policy of promotion andmarketing, but some of the radiopeople have to swallow their prideand realize that they're incompetent.People like Jay Cook, GerryPeterson, Brian McIntyre that aregood street programmers that winand are seldom wrong with music. Those are the people that all thesestatisticians, that are freaking out, should call and find out what theydo. But what they do is no differentthan the statistican does, it's just atalent that they have.
R&R: In other words thestatistician really couldn't learnbecause programming is a talent?
PAPALE: It is a talent. It's beinga radio professional and they aresensitive to music. You have to bemusically sensitive to pick a hit inthe first place and I would say that alot of PD's at Top 40 radio don'tlisten to music when they go home. They drink beer and watchtelevision.
MANCUSO: We find that to be afact. Many are so un-musical. Theygo home and read "How To BecomeA Millionaire." That's the truth. That's exactly what we're trying tofight. We're in a businesS wherewe're dealing with sensitivity andpeople and they are not tuned intothat factor at all. They are totallyscientific and totally mathematical. That's why we're basically an albumcompany. We deal with people whoare more sensitive to music, as mostof the FM people are, and I'm nottalking FM Top 40 ... I'm talkingabout Pop Progressive orProgressive music at the collegelevel. Those people are verysensitive to the artistic side of it too.The relevancy of what they'retalking about or what's happeningmusically is very real.
PAPALE: They are involved inwhat's happening now. They go toconcerts. They go to record stores. They like the music, and are totallyinto what they are doing.Unfortunately, a lot of it boils downto ownership of the radio station andthe pressures from management. I
think what has really created thestatistician basically and theseriousness of Top 20 radio ... I meanwe do take ourselves very seriouslyin this business... I don't mean thatwe (Chrysalis) take ourselvesseriously...
R&R: But you obviously takeyourself seriously business -wise.You've got Jethro TuII hiting Top 40in a big way.
MANCUSO: We do in a businessaspect, yes.
PA PALE: But the large owners ofthe radio stations -- The Bartells,Metromedia, RKO, TaftBroadcasting. They're corporationsand corporate policy is always tomake more money next year. That'sjust where it's at from Procter andGamble to RKO. And the ratings, which everyone lives and dies by,the AR B especially because that'sthe agency buying, everyone's veryworried about that rating so theyassume to get better ratings, youplay the familiar music and it's awhole round robin thing. We like FMradio a lot.
R&R: How have you brokenrecords AM -wise?
MANCUSO: Well, we have twothings going for us. Number one wehave very good product and numbertwo we have credibilitity at the radiostation level. Now we're not callingthem up and hyping them on a dozendifferent records a week. We've onlyworked three singles the entire year.
R&R: Do you really want to get

RADIOBy BOB WILSON
R&R: You are now NationalDirector of Shelter?
LA: RIGHT.R&R: And before that you worked
as a buyer for Poplar Tunes?LA: In Memphis, right.R&R: I basically wanted to talk to
you about juke box operations andhow it applies to radio airplay andresearch.
LA: Ok.R&R: The main thing is that
initial single sales are mostly to jukeboxes. This somewhat distortsnational trade numbers because itdoes not reflect audience sales oreven box play. Record companiesreport sales and national trademagazines reflect sales. Now, itprobably is very easy for a NeilDiamond or a Doobie Brothers orwhatever to get stock out there. What would you say the initialshipment of a good strong act is tojuke boxes?
LA: Well that's the key - the trackrecord. Usually with your juke boxoperators they want the trackrecords. Creedence Clearwater wasa beautiful example. After the pointthat Creedence ceased having big hitrecords, it took them two and a halfyears to burn out.
A juke box operator wouldbuy a Creedence record with just thename on it. Doesn't even have tohave grooves in it. You know what Imean? The name is there and that iswhat is going to make the buttonspunch.
R&R: Ok, how many could a
record company count on for initialsales?
LA: I would say200,000 ... somewhere between150,000 and 200,000.
R&R: So when you initially sell, and you're actually selling to jukebox operators, correct?
LA: Right.R&R: You're actually selling
those off; so let's say on a
Creedence, for example, on an oldCreedence you could unload 200,000the first week out.
LA: Right.R&R: But that has no bearing
whatsoever on`what the juke boxesactually are getting effective playon. That is, the man, the racks or theops brought it and put it in the boxes. But there is no one truly surveying tosee what's being played.
LA: Exactly. Which is the follow-through.
R&R: So, can you explain, as aformer buyer, the system. How youwould know what to do, or how theindustry, how radio could find out. There is a problem there. You've got200,000 singles out there that couldbe stiffing.
LA: And that's always a
possibility that you'd have to dealwith. Because that can happen, andit does happen, because they do putthem out and they do have to takethem back. But with a juke box, theone exception which of course veryfew juke box operators, except foryour powerhouses, buy direct. Aman that has 100 juke boxes, wouldneedless to say, be more likely to bebuying direct from Columbia ratherthan dealing through one -stops,which is the way that most all youroperators do. Now, when you sell arecord to a juke box operator, it'sgone. They don't return records. They have 50 black juke boxes, theyhave 50 country, they have 50 white, they buy them, they put them on,they're sold. You're not eating athing. But that's if you get it to thejuke box operator. In other words, ifyou've just got it sitting on yourfloor, naturally if they don't bite, they're going back to themanufacturer.
R&R: Ok, but to radio stations
SHELTER'S LINDA ALTER ON
The Role Of Juke BoxOperations In Radio Research
who react to or even listen to initialsales figures, it doesn't meananything. Let's take the charts forexample. If they predicate the factthat "X" record, sold initially250,000, 200,000 of that could go tojuke boxes.
LA: Exactly.R&R: But that doesn't mean
anything.LA: Which is why you've got to
take it another step beyond. Youcan't just go on sales. In otherwords, if you say that you've got75,000 out on a single first week, thefact that it's out there is not thepoint. Which is why you have to go astep further and check your outletsto see is it in there. For one thing, they have a real bad habit ofdumping them all in one location.Say you have 30 retail outlets.
R&R: When you say retail outlets, you're talking about juke box placesor stores?
LA: I'm talking about a retailoutlet, a store. If you have 30 retailoutlets and then a one -stop andmaybe three racks. If you put out 600singles, and you can say I've got 600in Memphis, if you've got them all inthe one -stop and you've got 30 otherlocations out there with no records, then there's no way to get a readingon it. And that's what mostcompanies will do. And you'll findthem being guilty of it. Because theone -stop will take it, but they won'tcover the rest of the bases. So if thatone -stop sells all 600 to juke boxes, you still have no turn. You knowwhat I mean, it's all gone to jukeboxes, you still have no retailreading on it at all. Which is thescratching point with knowingwhere they are and what kind offeedback you're getting.
R&R: Is there a way for radiopeople to get into juke box research,by talking to box operators in theircity?
LA: Sure. I would think it would bethe most advisable thing they coulddo because they do their meterreadings, they can tell you on a newCarpenters records -- if they'regetting 75-80 plays a week on it thenthat might be excellent. And theycan tell you, per location, if you saywell did you put the such and suchrecord -- if you bought it and you putit out, then they're going to know, ajuke box operator will know, insideof a three week period of time, whether he's got a hit or not. And ifthat meter isn't -tripping, then hemight leave it say for a total of sixweeks, it will come off. Juke boxoperators will, as a rule, what wouldit be 80 singles to a normal juke box, your regulation standard, every oneof them has got to be a moneymaker. It's wasted space if it's not.
R&R: What about free plays? What about bars or whatever thatencourage a waitress to keep themusic running? And she plays herfavorite record night after night. How do you alleviate that? And howdoes he alleviate that?
LA: Well, that's a hard one to getaround, but there are very few ofthem that are going to have freeplays. The waitresses in most ofyour places, you're going to findthem dropping quarters in just likeeverybody else.
R&R: But it comes off the bossestake, right?
LA: No doubt.
Linda Alter
R&R: But he gives the girls "X"amount of quarters to drop in, keepthe music going during a dead time.
LA: Right. But I don't think, particularly in beer joints which isone of the places where your heavymeter readings are going to comefrom, you're only going to find thatsay in afternoons when it wouldn'tbe high traffic. But I honestlybelieve that you'd still be able toread the difference. Because whenyou're open until 2 or 3 in themorning, you've got people sitting inthere drinking, they're going to bepunching up the entire time. That'sprobably one of the hottest areas forjuke boxes,. far away over a
restaurant or whatever, becauseyou've got them in a psychologicalthing where they're drinking andtherefore that's when they startreally getting down to basics.
R&R: Are there basic kinds oflocations, like where say countrylisteners go where ... we'rebreaking it down, but I mean shoulda person break it down for likecountry, for rock, for black, forprogressive. How do the boxoperators program?
LA: They go very heavily initiallyby requests.
R&R: From who?LA: From say a customer who
comes in continually and they keepsaying why isn't such and such onthe juke box? Well, after awhile theowner will hear it enough times thatthey'll write it down on a sheet ofpaper and give it to the juke box guywhen he comes by to check records. And he'll say, is there any way I canget this? Well, that's one way that aone -stop has got a real good idea ofwhen something is going to break.Because these guys have got it downto an art. They're checking a
location at least once a week. Goingin and taking the money out, checking the machine, making surethat everything is functioningcorrectly. Then they'll come in, saythey do that on a Tuesday, wellWednesday morning, they'll be inthere and they'll have a stack oflittle slips of paper, maybe a ticketfrom a restaurant or whatever, nowwhen you start seeing every one ofthose sheets of paper with all at oncea run on a certain record, then all atonce you know you've got you one.And that happens real fast.
R&R: Like say a George McCraerecord.
LA: Right. It's all over with! Now
that is a real good example becauseit was a black thing for two weeks, and then all at once it was a coverevery single location they've gotwith it.
R&R: Where do the requests comefrom? From hearing it on a radiostation?
LA: Sometimes. A lot of timesyou'll find that people are avid jukebox readers. They'll go in and checkout a juke box first thing and they'llnotice when something is on thereand when it's not. And there arerecords that have never receivedairplay that were very vig juke boxrecords. Possibly for lyrical content.
R&R: I don't go hanging aroundbars and I don't go in and play jukeboxes obviously. So let's talk aboutthe average person who does, andthere are a lot of them because jukeboxes represent a lot of money. Aperson will go in and look at a jukebox and maybe notice a new song bya favorite artist, is what you'resaying?
LA: Well, Ace Cannon is a
beautiful example. How long has itbeen since Ace Cannon has had a hitsingle? "Tough." Years ago, and yetjuke box operators will put an AceCannon record on a jOke boximmediately. Now you have toreally experience going and sittingin one of these places and listening towhat comes through. And that was areal important thing to me when I
was back there. Because I wanted toassociate and gear my buying towhat they were going to want outfront. It was very necessary for meto anticipate.
R&R: Could that be carrier'through to say maybe a radio stationpicking up on a trend like an AceCannon, in the markets he's sellingin or being played in rather. Thenpossibly if they started playing AceCannon they could be enlarging theiraudience.
LA: Exactly. Because it'ssomething that listeners do want tohear. And it's a very wierd thingbecause Brenda Lee, when BrendaLee was cold, before Brenda Leeever came back strong, they loveBrenda Lee. Brenda Lee will playfrom to doomsday on juke boxes. It'ssomething that nobody's everyreally been that aware of to follow,to find out the methods that are usedin programming. Because it is a
huge amount of the single business.
R&R: What about oldies?LA: Enormous. Absolutely
enormous. Very few would you findprogrammed maybe over 50 percentoldies because they can't afford tolose that current momentum. Butthere are oldies that would trip thestronger, maybe even more so thanthe current things, because thecurrent things they'll hear all daylong.
R&R: In a good location, howmany different plays, total, a weekdoes a juke box run through?
LA: It would depend on thelocation. That's a real tricky thingbecause there are locations that athousand would be a good week.Particularly in your bars.
R&R: Now, they're running twoplays for a quarter. So you're talkingabout a thousand quarters, or areyou talking about a thousand actualrecords chosen? Because 500 times25 cents isn't very much money.
LA: In some regards, possibly it
wouldn't look like a lot of money, butif you take a singles bar, a really fineprogrammed singles bar, athousand would be light.
R&R: So some locations do maybe4000-5000 plays a week or more?
LA: Easy. When you've got a lot oftraffic and singles bars are a realgood indicator because that's a lot ofyouth in there. And that's somethingthat they don't care about actuallybeing able to talk, just being able tosit there and drink and hearwhatever it is that's currently beingpunched up. It's a catching thing. Ifit's on when they get in there, ifthere's a juke box there, it's justnatural habit to dig for change.
R&R: Now we have discothequeson one end, that are sometimes jukebox discotheques; or taped, or live. But they play new product. Brandnew out of the box. Then you havejuke box locations that in essenceare playing hit product. Sometimesmaybe slightly early. But in general, hand in hand with the local radiostation. So therefore, all that radiocould use it for is verifying facts, that maybe they're not gettingenough single sales on a record but itis getting juke box play. Or maybeit's not dead yet even though itstopped selling. In other words, boxes don't play new records earlydo they?
LA: Actually, I don't think theywait that long. Most of these peoplehave been out there, they're not newat it. Most of these people have beenin the juke box business for years. Some of them can tell you somereally fascinating Depressionstories because that was when the
them. -
R&R:
That was a great time for
R&R: Is it happening all overagain?
LA: I'm real anxious to find outhow much of it, but I'm afraidthere's more to be dealt with at thispoint; the movies, television wasn'there the first round. So probably itwon't have the impact that it had thefirst round.
R&R: Eating out is doing verywell. It's up over what it has been.
LA: Therefore, I expect this to betrue up, not necessarily gangbusterslike before. But these guys havebeen doing it for so long that theyhave developed an ear. They'll missthem, they'll miss them in a minute. But they also have developed an earand they'll catch them nine timesout of ten more than they'll missthem. If they put it on in their officeand they like it, they're going to buyit and they're going to try it in theirboxes. They have to be explorersinto that because how many weekscan go by without that name artistscoming out with a new record. You're always going to have to havethat same amount of records to puton your locations.
R&R: How do record companiespromote juke boxes, or do they getinvolved with promoting them?
LA: I don't think that they've everreally gotten into it in depth as theyshould have, because you wouldhave to do a mailing on a nationalscale, make sure that they're at-least aware your product is outthere. That's a really importantthing, to make them aware early,Because they do put the records on,they do listen, and there areoperators out there that if you sentthem five records, they put them outon five locations, and if they get areading, they're going to zap itimmediately. Which gives you aquick in to single sales. No doubtabout it. And it's something that'they never capitalized on. Possiblybecause they just aren't aware thatit's out there. Everybody knows thatthere's juke boxes, and everybody

(Buddha). All different; allinteresting.
Arista has made a wisepurchase of distributionrights to a strong cut, "BumpMe Baby" by DooleySilverspoon on CottonRecords. This soon to be re-released cut has good salespotential.
"I Just Can't Say Goodbye"by the Philly Devotions(Columbia) is a disco natural.
The third time around maybe the most successful for"The Bottle." Gil -Scott Heron(who does a most astutesocial commentary on hisnew album) and Brother ToBrother did very goodversions of this song. Nowwatch for Joe Bataan'srendition on his new album"Afro-Philipino" (also asingle). The added Salsarhythm brings new life andvitality to this record which isbreaking out of the east on thenew Salsoul label. This. Is anInstant crowd pleaser, fillingdance floors on its first play.
A special thanks to thosecompanies that have addedus to their mailing lists.

knows that there's records on them, but apparently it's always just kindof been tought that it just happens.
R&R: It could be like a sleepinggiant.
LA: Oh, exactly. It's somethingthat could be capitalized on to noend. To absolutely no end. Becauseit's untapped. It's something thathasn't really been fooled withbecause nobody has ever taken thetime to see the enormous effect, it'ssomething that's taken for granted. That's the whole thing.

into AM that much? Do you reallycare about it?
PAPALE: Yes, you have to careabout it because you are reaching amass audience you can't ignore.
R&R: But your success, incomeand rapport has been with theFM's.
MANCUSO: Well, we're gettingback to the whole thing we weretalking about earlier. The thing withthat is that we're dealing with peoplewho are sensitive to music. And let'sface it, they are lust not sensitive tomusic in top 40 radio for whateverreason. Whether they themselvesare not or whether they are underthe wrath of a general manager whosays "why did you put this record onand not that one which is fifty with abullet?" There are so manydifferent variables. There are somany situations.
R&R: Futuristically speaking, doyou foresee yourself getting moreinto an AM stream?
PAPALE: We'll probably stillmaintain our image as being analbum oriented company, but wewill not negate the fact that if wehave a strong cut from an album, wewill release it for AM play. Youcannot ignore that gigantic audiencethat is there to give you at least aquarter of a million or more units.
R& R: Are you as straight forwardwith the stations in your opinions asyou have expressed to me?
MANCUSO: We had a case lastweek with a program director whosaid our album was number twenty-one in the market. Jimmy Fox atKCBQ. So we researched the wholething. We talked to KPRI, KSEA,KGB, caught all the major retailoutlets in the city and we came upwith number four or five.
PAPALE: So we called him backand said "we respect your opinion, but you're wrong."
MANCUSO: What we told him was"you're full of shit, man. You'reabsolutely wrong and you can't sitthere and tell us that you're right."
PAPALE: So he said "O.K."
MANCUSO: We're going to tellthem when they're wrong and if theydon't like it, it's too damn bad, because we don't have the time towaste on people like that.
R&R: Well the promotion end ofthe business seems to be taking atrend towards a total honesty andfacts approach. That's why peoplelike Gerry Peterson of KHJ will tellyou up front if he is or isn't going togo on the record and why. You don'thave to beat around the bush and donumbers. He doesn't lead you along.
MANCUSO: Exactly, and that'sall you can ask of a radio station.
PAPALE: One lie builds intoanother one, so it's just easier andmakes more sense to tell the truthand be up front with one anotherwhether it's a promotion man or aPD.

by Jim DuncanOut at COLUMBIA records are JIMMY DEAN, BARBARA
MANDRELL and newcomer SANDI BURNETT. DEAN has not donemuch recording for the company and this wasn't much of a surprise.SANDI BURNETT being dropped was somewhat of a surprise becauseCOLUMBIA has been so involved with a lot of promotion for this gal whowas a featured performer on the TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD"Moscow" T.V. special. BARBARA MANDRELL has been working toget out of her contract as far back as the October CMA convention. AD.J. release of her latest single: "Wonder When Baby's Coming Home"was shipped by mistake to several markets and according to CHUCKTHAGGARD here in Hollywood the record is not going to be released.
Good news for WILLIE NELSON fans in our audience: he has signedwith COLUMBIA and will be one of the featured acts at the COLUMBIAnational convention in Atlanta next week. On EPIC now is JOESTAMPLEY as you've heard before, but I wanted to mention his firstrelease on that label will be next week. His first single will be a truckdriving song called: "Roll On Big Mama." Let it be knowns: BOB PITTMAN is NOT the "music director" ofWMAQ in Chicago, but rather ASSISTANT PROGRAM MANAGER whohandles the research division of the Music section of the NBC -ownedWMAQ. (Whew!!) PITTMAN called to inform me of my error. I standcorrected. (I hope you guys are writing this all down, I'll be askingquestion at the end of the year.) Bob also called to let me know he isreceiving some good action on the PAULA WEBB, "Dear Mr.President" release on 20th Century. Some of our reporting stations havepicked this up and have gotten similar reaction...
From CAPITOL: HAGGARD has a new single on its way. It'sdescribed as "a country romance tune" 3:05 in length and called:"Always Wanting You." ... WARNER has officially flipped the REXALLEN, JR. The side will be "I Can See Clearly Now." ... a new BILLY"Crash" CRADDOCK is being mailed out soon. Look for: "StillThinking About You."
BILL HART reports from WJJD in Chicago of a special "GoldenWeekend." The station is giving away "gold" bricks. Specially painted,by the jocks, "gold bricks! !"... WWOK in Miami found out from a recentreport over 50,000 people were jobless in the area and thd station is goingto do something to help. In cooperation with the Florida StateEmployment office, WWOK will broadcast job openings on -the -air eachday from 10-2... The latest contest from WHK in Cleveland has thi promoline: "WHK is out to belt a trucker." You guessed it: They are givingaway free belts to truckers. (They ought to get a picture of a truckerchewing on one of the winning belts. The caption could read: "WHKgives a trucker a belt in the mouth!!)
Without having heard the new GARY STEWART release on RCA, Ilike it just for its title: "She's Thinking Single and I'm DrinkingDoubles."... WSLR, Akron is celebrating 10 years of country music thismonth. This weekend they will have listeners featured as "guestD.J.'s." The audience will be invited to call in and record an intro for arecord... Baltimore, Maryland has lost one of its country stations.WBMD has changed to all . religion -format. won't play it. He's not in the businessto make friends -- he's in it to besuccessful and make money. We stillhave a lot of street programmerswho know what their audience wantto hear, like a George Michaels or aJay Cook. If Jay gets a gut feelingabout a single that he knows will fitthe format and please the audience,he'll play it no matter who is or isn'ton it. I love that, but there are fewerand fewer of those programmersleft.
Our promotion men have to have abetter awareness of radio and whatthey need -- a more scientificapproach which they have acquired. But, at the same time we still have tocommunicate the excitement of thatmusic. Everyone has a nerve in himthat gets shook by music. You can'tgo into a stone faced PD and justfeed him facts and figures. You haveto jump up and down on his desk andturn him on. If you don't someoneelse will. It's Steve's philosophy andmine that after all the systems, facts, and figures, if you haven'tturned people onto the music itself, you haven't done your job as a
promotion man.-Candy Tusken

ABC Tapes 'InConcert' FromGrand Ole Opry
It took almost six hours, about4400 in the audience, a televisioncrew and six RCA recording actsto tape the first ABC "In Concert"TV show from Nashville's GrandOle Opry House last January 15.
The near -six hours reeled offquickly as Charley Pride hostedthe 90 -minute (when edited)show. It was the first time theshow has been done fromNashville and there was concernbeforehand about how much of anaudience would attend the freefilming and be willing to sitthrough set changes, re -takes,etc. The audience impressed theABC people and standing roomonly was available by showtime. They cheered, clapped andscreamed on cue -- as RCA'sRonnie Milsap, Jerry Reed, DollyParton, Gary Stewart, ChetAtkins and Charley Prideperformed before the cameras.Even through the re -takes, theyreacted as though it was the firsttime they were seeing thesequences.
The show was fantastic too! Itbegan with acting host CharleyPride doing "Kawliga" andseveral of his Other big hitsincluding "Kiss An Angel GoodMorning"and"Mississippi Cotton -Pi ckin' Delta Town." ThenRonnie Milsap sang "Legend InMy Time," "Please Don't Tell MeHow The Story Ends" and "PureLove." Then it was GaryStewart's turn. Stewart is a
member of Charley Pride'sPridesmen that has had severaltop ten records in the pastmonths. His "Drinkin' Thing"and "Out of Hand" hits added ahonky tonk flavor ... then DollyParton opened with "Jolene,"followed by "Coat of ManyColors," "Love Is Like AButterfly" and her newly -released RCA single "TheBargain Store." Interspersedwith the solo performances withCharley Pride introductions, a
duet featuring Ronnie and Dollyand a finale (which was filmedearly so each performer couldleave when his individualperformance was taped). By now,it's midnight and Chet Atkins didhis thing with Jerry Reed's band... then Reed, himself, joined Chetfor a number. At 12:45 am, JerryReed was introduced and led offwith his current hit "Let's SingOur Song" followed by hiscomposition of seven years ago,"A Thing Called Love" and hisfamous "Lord, Mr. Ford."
The evening closed out about 2a.m. The almost six hours of tapewill be edited down to 90 minutesfor its network airing on April11th. It was a typical night oftaping for the ABC crew. It wasnot a typical night of watching forthe audience. They had seen whatnetwork filming was all aboutfrom beginning to end ... and hadenjoyed every minute of it.
At top, Ronnie Milsap, Dolly Parton, and Charley Pride shake handswith the audience at "In Concert" Grand Ole Opry taping in Nashville.Above, Dolly Parton gets made up for her appearance on the show. Seestory at left.

junior in high school at K ENE in Toppenish, Washington. He wentthrough part-time to full-time in 1970 with a six -hour board shift andduties as chief engineer and Music Director until April of 1973. His wifeLinda and he moved to Eugene, Oregon where he did part-time then full-time all-night work at KEE D which was Top 40 at the time. In
September of 1973, he went to work at KASH, doing the all-night shift. Then on to KBFW in January of this year as Chief Music Person and
afternoon drive.

INSIDEHVILLE
"Just about the best ofeverything!" Those were the kindof phrases to be heard last weekwhen the ABC-TV of thirty peoplewere here to tape four countryshows at the Opry House."Amazing!" said announcer DonBranker, "The reaction of thecrowd. And they stayed for fourhours of taping with the sameenthusiasm from start to finish."They were flabbergasted at whatthey saw when they got here. Most of them from New York andLA; the Opry House and it'sfacilities, the talent, (who BuddyRich last week said was "no -talent") and the audience, mostTV veterans agree are theimperative ingredients for a hitshow. Jorn Winther, producer, speaking in his very obviousSwedish accent, said "I haveworked in New York, Los Angelesand Europe ... all around theworld. I've never seen anything toequal the total elements of the TVfacility, the talent, and theaudience!" Associate producerWendy Riche (she booked thestars for the four shows) said,"Without knocking other forms ofmusic, there is nothing likecountry music. It's like a family
. really! The stars, the peoplebackstage; everything andeverybody helps everybody."
Buddy Rich was here for threedays (that's all the city could takeof his "love") at the Exit Inn withhis giant three piece band. Heranted about how bad country is,how ridiculous the tastes ofmillions of people who love it andhow dumb the people who buy itare. Then he expounded on whyhe hates the south because there'snot enough love. How did thatdrug arrest turn out in Australia, anybody know?
No, Paul McCartney and hisLinda will not move to Music City. They are set to buy a house inBeverly Hills ... Yes, GeorgeJones and Tammy are still "go"on the divorce. Tammy wasslated to host one of those "InConcert" concerts for ABC lastweek ... Allen Funt and his crazyCandid Camera crew came totown, snuck around, shot film, and snuck out. It'll be on herenext week.
Four Star Music boss JoeJohnson has pulled all hisindependent acts off Decca (scuseme, MCA) and signed them to hisnewly reactivated 4 Star Records.Jerry Wallace will go to MGM,and George Morgan, BonnieGuitar, Jimmy Elledge, BettyJean Robinson, Carl Belew, andMarie Owens are now on 4 StarRecords. If that sounds like a new
label, it isn't. May I name somesuperstars who started or pole-vaulted from 4 Star Records tothe major leagues in the Forties,Fifties, and even Sixties? Trythese: Webb Pierce, HankLocklin, Patsy Cline, EddieMiller, Slim Willet, Ferlin Husky(scuse me, Terry Preston)Jimmy Dean, Maddox Bros. &Rose, T. Texas Tyler and othersmy memory won't allowpresently. But you can tell by thisthat it's not a new label. If heutilizes it, Joe could start out witha classic catalogue of countrygold. Hey Joe, I can help!
BITS & PIECES:Whateverhappened to Warren Smith, whohad the top ten record of "Odds &Ends" (bits & pieces)?... Jack D.Johnson pulled himself awayfrom the day-to-day humdrum of"counting money" for his actsRonnie Milsap, Gary Stewart,Four Guys, and uh ... oh yes,Charley Pride, to take a holidayin Europe!... Ben Smathers, afunny guy whose Stoney MountainCloggers have been square danceclogging on the Opry (andeverywhere) for 17 years, wassurprised by outgoing GovernorWinfield Dunn with a specialcitation as "Dancemaster OfTennessee" ... someone on MusicRow is reportedly writing a book"What Makes Loretta Run?"
In the years I have done mysyndicated "Inside Nashville"radio show, I have met somegreat young radio people. One ofthem is special to me because, I
guess, he thought I was special. He's formerly of country KI KNradio in Corpus Christi, Texas;he's nowdoing afternoons at WHKin CleVeland. I know him asJohnny King. His Clevelandlisteners know him as "One -EyedJack." One of the things I
admired about him from thebeginning was the absence of anobvious complex about havingonly one good eye. Now John iscapitalizing on it, as Dickens hasalways said about his"shortcoming," "Fella looked atme out front awhile ago and said,'Humph! Looks like Johnny Cashafter taxes!' " Dave Donahue, congratulations! You know a
good man when you see ... uh hearhim!
Make a mental note: 1975 willbe the year country -Nashvillebecame a TV center (or tookgiant steps). Happy birthdayDolly, Slim Whitman, DougKershaw, Claude Gray andSpeedy West. Hope you all haveeverything you want, as long asit's good for you ... (you too, myfriend).

POP NOTESBY MIKE KASABO
A few months ago we reported super hot action on an album cutby Roger Whittaker. The track "The Last Farewell" was put onthe WSB PLAYLIST BY Music Director Gene Christie and gotimmediate phone reaction. Well, let's move about 200 milesNortheast of Atlanta to Nashville. WSM's Don Smity put therecord on two weeks ago and it is now the No. 1 most requestedsong they're playing! Action of that sort from two powerfulstations would make me take note if I were RCA.
The Paula Webb record "Please Mr. President" which is an outand out smash in Detroit is now spreading to Rochester viaWROC.
The "B" side of Hoyt Axton's latest single is getting very goodreaction at WLW, KWAV, and KNBR. It's called "Speed Trap"and is from his up -coming album which is still un-titled.
The Mickey Mouse Club, which was baby-sitter to many of usduring the 50's, is now being reactivated nationally throughsyndication. Ron Fell and LaVerne Drake at KNBR are ready tocapitalize on it. They dusted off Julie London's version of "TheMickey Mouse Club March" which was, originally on Liberty andput it on the playlist. Reaction has been strong enough for Ron tomake a suggestion that Liberty might consider re -issuing theside.
Several album cuts mentioned to us by our reporters as beingstrong programming items: "One Day In Your Life" MichaelJackson, "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome" BobDylan .. . many stations like this one, Other Dylan cuts:"Tangled Up In Blue," "You're A Big Girl Now," "Lily,Rosemary and The Jack of Hearts" ... length (8:50) restrictsthis from play at tightly run Pop stations but most everyone lovesIt.
From the Mac Davis album . . . "I Still Love," "Boogie WoogieMama," "Magic Mystery."
"Far East Man" George Harrison, "It's A Miracle" BarryManilow . .. look for a single on this shortly. "Sad Eyes,""Standing On The Inside" and "The Immigrant" Neil Sedaka."Don't Be Cruel" Billy Swan, "Crazy" Brenda Patterson. "She'sLow Clouds" Harriet Schock, "Mhairu" Galagher & Lyle.
Records getting good phone response, outside of the obviousare: "I Care" Tom T. Hall, "Thanks For The Smiles" CharlieRoss, "Front Page Rag" Billy May, "Another Somebody DoneSomebody Wrong Song" B.J. Thomas, "Hot Souse" Jan Davis,"He's Everywhere" Marilyn Sellars, "Part Of The Plan" DanFogelberg, "LovIn' You" Minnie Riperton.
SPECIAL NOTE: I'm happy to report that everyone I talked tothis week regarding the possibility of a mid -week musicconference became even more excited than I had expected. Nowthat we have our line-up of participants ready, I will check Intothe financial aspects of this "conference call" with the telephonecompany. I hope we can swing it.
