How do we provide data center infrastructure for all requirements?

– Colocation, Servers, Virtual Servers, Cloud Computing

How do we minimize our carbon footprint?

How do we measure it?

How do we justify the extra costs up front?

How do we use this as a competitive advantage?

How can we market this message to prospective customers?

“A server has the same annual carbon footprint as

your average SUV doing 15 miles to the gallon. Yet,

whereas the SUV is seen as a villain from the

environmental perspective, the server is not.“

Hydropower is the only renewable power source that can run major data centers today and Canada is the number one producer of hydropower.

Colder climates are more efficient for cooling datacenters

Properly engineered large scale datacenters are 2 to 3x more efficient then traditional small datacenters

Rural industrial areas are ideal datacenter locations

Lossless networks now run 2000 Miles

Virtualization is mature technology and physical to virtual conversion is common place

Remote management tools work well

Virtual server management tools allow for management of 100s to 1000s of severs per person

With hydropower, virtualization tools and next generation green data centers in rural industrial areas Canada could run all of North America’s servers reducing their carbon footprint by 20 times or more.
