ChrisAlfordandGregSugarsrepresentedVictoria,ChrisGearyandEllenRixon(NSW),WayneHillandDanielleHill(SA),ShaneGrahamandMathewNeilson(Qld)andGarethRattrayandToddRattrayflewtheflagforthehostState.
UnfortunatelyforWarwick,whoholdsaslenderleadoverGaryHallJrinthisseason’sleadingmetropolitandrivercompetition,thehorseshedrewweremostlyrankoutsidersandhisbestfinishwasasolitarysecondacrosstheeight-raceprogram.
Lewiscouldn’tboothomeawinnerbuthewasconsistentthroughoutthenightwithtwosecondsandtwothirdsandeventuallyfinishedsecondbehindVictoria’schampionreinsmanAlford.
ItwasanighttorememberforAlford,adualInter-DominionChampionshipwinningdriver,whoshowedallofhisclassandexperiencetoclinchhisfirstAustralianDriversChampionshiptitleaheadofLewisandGeary.
ItwasatripleChris-ChrisAlfordfirst,ChrisLewissecondandChrisGearythird.
Alfordwasinstalledastheshort-pricedfavouritetowintheDriversSeriesandcertainlydidn’tlethislegionofsupportersdown,winningthreeracesandfinishingintheplacingsonafurthertwooccasions.
Geary,therisingstarinNewSouthWalesharnessracingdrivingranks,settheearlypaceintheseriesscoringwiththefavouriteBusterWilliam($2.40)intheopeningracefortrainerWayneCampbell.
ButLewisalmostcausedtheupsetofthenightwhenhebroughtoutsiderCastorTroy($32.50)withalatechargetogivefavouritebackersafright.
Warwickdidwellonthe$98.80longshotMissRuthlesstofinishfifth.
ThesecondracewaswonbyQueenslanderNeilsonontheJuanitaMcKenzie-trainedJaksTeller($1.20).Warwickfinishedsixthon100/1shotHitTheLights,whileLewiswas11thonanother100/1outsiderStylishTrend.
Geary,runner-uptoAmandaTurnbullintheNSWDriver’s
Premiershiplastseasonwith149winners,thenproducedamagicaldriveinthethirdracebehindtheMelissaMaine-trainedItzGemmasDelight($55.10),spearingthroughalongthepegstowinbyametre.
Lewiscameinsixthinthisracewiththe$9.10chanceEbonyallstarzzz,whileWarwickfinishedninthbehindUltimateCourage($29.80).
Alfordstruckbackinthefourth,pilotingtheKenRattray-trainedImBorntoRule($59.60)toanupsetvictory,gunningdowntheSugars-drivenracefavouriteTaurisi($2.50)inthehomestraight.
LewisfinishedthirdbehindtheVictorianduoonBorderCross($8.70)andWarwickwasagainbehindarankoutsiderinWashiesChance($50.50)andcameinseventh.
Inthefifthraceonthecard,GrahamchalkeduphisfirstwinintheserieswhenheguidedtheToddRattray-trained$1.20favouriteHaftertoaneasyall-the-wayvictory.
WarwickfinishedsecondwithRollonJack($26)andLewisplacedthirdbehindSparkling($15.10).
Inthesixthrace,SouthAustralianWayneHill,thewinneroflastyear’sAustralianDriversChampionship,guidedPaulHill’sunbeatenthree-year-oldStreitkid($1.70)tovictoryafterastirringtwo-horsewarwiththegallantFlyingWingard(Alford).
LewisfinishedfourthonKaliskaLeis($17.40),whileWarwickreinedanotherlongshotAlbayzin($57.40)into11th.
AlfordthenstruckintheseventhracewiththeToddRattray-trainedGoggoGeeGee,the$1.60favourite.
LewisfinishedfourthonUnionForce($5.40)andWarwick’shorsewasscratched.
Impressivethree-year-oldSemowillrev($1.30)clinchedtheDriversChampionshipforAlfordwithaseeminglyeffortlessperformanceinthelastracefortrainerCraigHayes,stormingtotheleadatthe1600mbeforecruisinghomebysixmetresoverLewis’chargeLeadSinger($4.60).Warwickfinishedhisnightwitha10thbehindRegmondo($59.30).

WAFL HERO CLUBSAtthe2017WAFLGrandFinalonSunday24SeptemberCommunityTAB awarded South Fremantle Football Club (SFFC) and EastFremantle Football Club (EFFC) the ‘Hero Club’ title for theworktheyhavebeendoingintheircommunitiesoffthefootyfield.
Community TAB gave $2500 to SFFC and $2500 to the StephenMichael Foundationwhich SFFC created, and $1000 to EFFC and$1000toTheKaiEardleyFundwhichEFFCcreated.
InMarch2017,SFFClaunchedtheStephenMichaelFoundationwiththeintentionofworkingwithinthecommunitiesoftheirrecruitingzone initially, and then beyond once established. The Foundation
aims to be leaders in community development through assistingyouth to achieve their goals andbecomevaluedmembersof thecommunity.
In 2016 the EFFC communitywas rockedwith thenews that oneof their own had taken his life, 20 year old Kai Eardley. The KaiEardleyFund(KEF)wasestablishedtocreatepositivechangeforthementalhealthofyouth,andinordertodothisKEFpartneredwithTomorrowMantosupportthedeliveryoftheirprogramManUp.
RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING AWARENESS WEEKIn October the Gaming andWagering Commission, Crown Perth,Lotterywest, Racing and Wagering Western Australia, Centrecareand Medibank joined forces to promote responsible gamblingpracticesacrosstheState.
ResponsibleGamblingAwarenessWeekwilltookplacefrom23–29Octobertoemphasestheneedforbalanceandcontrolinensuringgamblingremainsanenjoyablepastimeandnotaproblem.

HorngrewupjustdowntheroadfromGloucesterParkinthesuburbofMaylandsandonesuspectsthathisloveoftrotscamefromhismaternalgrandfatherLouCalfwhotrainedFairBoytowinthe1921NewYearHandicapattheWACAtrackoppositemoderndayGloucesterPark.
WithagrandfathercalledCalfwhatelsecouldBillHornbecomebutabutcher.
BillwasapprenticedtoFredMcGovernwhojusthappenedtobeathoroughbredtrainerandwhileBillwastobecomeWA’sApprenticeButcheroftheYearin1952hisworkingdayswerespentthinkingaboutandtalkingabouthorses.
Horn’svisitstoGloucesterParkbeganin1950andlikesomanyotherstheattractionwasbeingabletohaveabet.
HestillremembershisfirstvisittoGloucesterParkwhenhismateJimKinnearconvincedhimthathisfatherArthur’shorsecouldwinandthepairofteenagerstookwhatmoneytheyhadandheadedforthebookiesring.
