The year was 1981. We had a group of endurance athletes living here in Southern California who would use any excuse to go out and run, bike or
swim. We trained all summer for long dis-tance triathlons and marathons in the fall, but that was it. The problem was, after early October, there really weren’t that many events to choose from.
So I decided the time was right to create something totally different. I knew that on Thanksgiving morning, most of us got together to have a Turkey Bowl football game with friends and family before the late afternoon feast. It was a tradition. Play a little way- too- aggressive football in the morning after not playing the game at all for the previous 12 months, come home limp-ing after pulling a quad and/ or hamstring, prop ourselves in front of the television to watch the Green Bay Packers play the Detroit Lions and gorge ourselves on turkey, stuffi ng and all the trimmings.
But as we aged, touch football wasn’t really part of our lives like it had been when we were younger. We were all endurance guys and gals now, so why wasn’t there an endurance event of some sort we could do on Thanksgiving?
That summer I had done an event called a Ride and Tie east of San Diego. What is a Ride and Tie? I’m so glad you asked! Two runners teamed up to attack a 28 mile off-road course…with a horse.
Wait…a what? Yep a horse. Here’s how it worked. I started on the horse and rode four miles or so down the trail where I

dismounted, tied Mr. Ed to a tree limb, and then went off running. My partner started the race running, got to the horse, mounted up and rode off. It was the ultimate game of leapfrog except that you actually had to have access to a 2,000 pound animal that could kill you.
In the Ride and Tie I participated in, I hadn’t ridden a horse before, which was a problem. I ran the fi rst leg of the race, got on our horse Shasta at about mile four, and tried to hang on for dear life with a death grip on to his mane as he sprinted past rocks, trees and other runners and horses like he was heading into the stretch at Churchill Downs.
I came away from that Ride and Tie ex-perience loving the concept of two runners taking turns running and riding something, but also knowing that that something needed to be anything but a horse. Who the heck had a horse in the garage? To me that was a fatal fl aw.
So that Thanksgiving I decided to put on a Ride and Tie in a local canyon north of San Diego, but we replaced the horse fi rst with cruiser bikes that a buddy at a local bike shop loaned to me for the day, and in later years, with mountain bikes.
It was a total blast and we’d have 30, 40, 50 and eventually 100 teams of two joining us each
Thanksgiving morning. I rented a Turkey suit for the occasion and had another friend
create some championship belts for the winning team out of tin foil. Creative, right?
There was nothing better than getting together with friends on Thanksgiving morning to get in a fun ride and run with like-minded individuals before heading home for the traditional turkey eatathon.
There were no Thanksgiving Day runs, tris or bike rides back then, so if we wanted to get in a good workout, we had to create our own.
Times have certainly changed for the bet-ter. There are now over a dozen Thanksgiv-ing Day events here in Southern California alone and if you check out the pages of RACEPLACE in this issue, you’ll see ads for a number of them. For a full listing, go to pages XXXXXXXXXXXXX and XXXXXXXXXXX you’ll see our annual listing of every Thanksgiving event in our area. Find an event, grab the family and I guarantee you’ll have an absolute blast.
And the best part? You can leave the horse at home!

Robert Quinn
On December 18, 2013, Robert, now 35, had a life-changing doctor’s appointment. The Bergenfi eld, New Jersey, resident was prescribed fi ve medications, including one to control his type 2 diabetes. It was on this day that his quest to lose weight and get healthy began.
With the help of some fi tness apps, he was able to stop all medications by April 2014 and that November completed his fi rst 5K.
This year has turned out to be huge for the beer salesman and classical musician. He hit the 100-pound weight-loss mark in June and competed in the New York City Half Marathon, three sprint triathlons and an Olympic-distance triathlon.
Robert plans to continue competing in triathlons with an Ironman being his ultimate goal. Still new to the sport, he’d also like to give the Belmar Triathlon and the Westchester Triath-lon (both in his home state) another shot, along with the New York City Triathlon.
Congratulations, Robert. You are an inspiration as our Athlete of the Month! As athlete of the month Robert will receive:

No matter what sport you do, there is a universal truth to high perfor-mance; it comes down to how much force you can apply, and the speed at
which you can apply it.As a cyclist, pushing into the pedals with
the highest force from your legs, and how fast your pedals spin is key to performance. Hit a golf ball, and it comes down to how fast you can swing the club while hitting the ball with the most force, (hopefully keeping it straight). In swimming, how forceful your pull is, and how many of those forceful pulls you can take every minute matters. If running, the force you apply into the ground, and how fast your foot gets off the ground determine your speed.
Many athletes understand the force part, some making a priority of strength training, others doing big gear climbs, pulling with
TrainingPlace
paddles in the pool, or running hill repeats. But these are just one side of the equation, as speed of the movement needs to be ad-dressed too. Speed of the movement is usually expressed in endurance sports as RPM, or revolutions per minute, or cadence.
Low cadence runners spend more time with their foot on the ground, meaning they aren’t actually moving from that point. The longer the foot stays there, the more time an athlete spends planted there.
Low cadence riders, or “mashers” as they are often called, are required to produce a high force with every slow pedal stroke, meaning more fast-twitch muscle fi ber is required, as intensity goes up. It sounds counter-intuitive, considering the movement is slow, but the more powerful muscle fi bers are fast-twitch, so when required to produce more force, more fast-twitch fi bers are recruited.
Fast-twitch muscle fi ber can’t last very long, especially compared to slow-twitch muscle
fi bers. The same thing happens with runners as cycling mashers, who have to push more force into the ground if they can’t raise their cadence. Slow-twitch fi bers are utilized more in generally higher cadence efforts.
You’re probably wondering, “How can one address speed of the movements?” And, “How am I supposed to address cadence when I have all these other workouts I need to do, especially the hard ones?” Great questions!
If you can, you should be looking at your average cadence on easy workouts, and looking to raise it there, fi rst and foremost, bringing a new sense of purpose and training effect to your easier or recovery sessions. If the only time you work on improving your cadence is when you go hard, you won’t give yourself enough opportunity to really improve it.
There’s a coordination and neurological fi tness when it comes to maintaining high cadence, which must be honed and developed. Technique also plays a role, in how smooth of a pedal stroke a cyclist has, or even the body position and foot-strike technique for runners. All of these can be improved in easier sessions, if the athlete is really focused on the technique, and keeping the intensity overall low. Raising cadence can stress the body, especially if too much too soon, so these sessions are best introduced in small intervals, and increased over time.
Check your bike computer and see what cadence you tend to spin easy at. If it’s in the 80’s, you need to get it to the 90’s, or even better, over 100 rpms.
Get a foot pod for your shoes, to com-municate with the GPS watch you use on your runs. Again, start tracking what your average cadence is for you, even your easy runs.
If your easy, default cadence is in the 70’s or mid to low 80’s, it needs to be addressed. Doing small intervals where all you focus on is raising your cadence 2-4 rpms more, without creating more force into the ground, can do wonders.
If there is a clear difference between your easy efforts and even your moderate efforts, then bringing this type of training into your program will likely yield some signifi cant results in as little as 4 weeks.
Best of luck!

R ecently I spent two weeks in Kenya studying the diet of that country’s elite runners. One of the interesting features of this diet is that it is low in
meat. The typical elite Kenyan runner consumes meat no more than three or four times per week. Kenya is a poor country, where meat is an expen-sive luxury. While the most successful runners can afford to increase their meat intake, they usually choose not to, being accustomed to and comfortable with a plant-centered diet.
Yet the diet of Kenyan runners is not very dif-ferent from the diet of elite runners from other, wealthier countries. My research has uncovered a consistent pattern of relatively low meat consumption among elite runners from Ireland to Japan and everywhere in between. While very few of these athletes are vegetarian, a majority eat meat less often than non-athletes in the wealthier nations do. The reason behind this
broad pattern is almost certainly that a low-meat diet is optimal for running fi tness and for overall health, which is the foundation of fi tness.
Eating some meat is better than eating none at all. Recently, a large epidemiological study performed by Swiss researchers found that people who ate small amounts of meat tended to live longer than vegetarians. Vegetarian run-ners are more likely than omnivorous runners to become anemic because running increases iron needs while a vegetarian diet tends to supply less iron.
A LITTLE MEAT GOES A LONG WAY, HOWEVER, AND EATING A LOT OF MEAT IS WORSE THAN EATING NONE.
Heavy meat eaters do not live as long as light meat eaters or vegetarians. For runners, eating a lot of meat is detrimental because it crowds other important food groups—especially veg-etables, fruit, and whole grains—out of the diet.
The human body is very adaptable. There is no specifi c frequency of meat consumption that all runners need to aim for. You could eat meat
anywhere from twice a week to twice a day and notice little difference in your health, fi tness, or performance. But the likelihood is that you will get the best results by following the example of the world’s best runners and eating meat relatively infrequently. I myself eat meat (or more often fi sh) about once a day.
Not all meats are equally benefi cial. Fish (which is not often classifi ed as meat but is in fact the same thing—animal fl esh) is more benefi cial than poultry and red meat. Research has shown that eating fi sh reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by enhancing vascular function, lowering blood pressure, and reducing systemic infl ammation. Fish is also good for the brain and nervous system. Some studies have reported that regular fi sh eaters exhibit better brain function in old age and are less likely to become depressed and to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
Red meat should be eaten less often than fi sh and poultry. Heavy red meat intake is associat-ed with elevated risk for colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease. So take a cue from the Kenyans and make red meat a peripheral compo-nent of your diet instead of the centerpiece on your plate at every meal.
