PROJECT INFO: Please list the goals and benefits of the project or program and how it pertains to one of the 4 advocacy missions.

GOAL 1- Build awareness for cycling to encourage Omaha to become an active community that is synonymous with cycling for all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Specialized, Greenstreet Cycles and Race 2 re:Cycle are all geared up to help improve the health and wellness of our community by supporting charities and causes involving cycling as a catalyst for change. This event is the first of its kind in Omaha, Nebraska and will provide the population with an opportunity to introduce wellness into their daily lives. According to the advocacy group Live Well Omaha, Omaha’s wellness is ranked number 142 out of 146 major metropolitan areas in the United States. Greenstreet Cycles and the Race 2 re:Cycle will work in conjunction with Live Well Omaha to help them attain their goal of increasing Omaha’s ranking to number 10 over the next ten years.

GOAL 2 - Provide fun, interactive and educational activities for youth that revolve around cycling, and simultaneously encourage healthy, active lifestyles. Designed to promote cycling from the very beginning, the Race 2 re:Cycle mirrors Specialized’s advocacy efforts that are exclusively dedicated to putting young people on bikes, making cycling safer for kids and increasing the cycling population in the "under 18" demographic. To encourage children and families of all demographics and backgrounds to participate, registration fees are below average and all children under 18 are free. By getting children involved and excited about cycling they will learn early on the importance of an active lifestyle. Throughout the day there will be a family fun zone in Turner Park, allowing the sponsors of the event to interact with participants of all ages and educate them about cycling, recycling, living a wellness-focused lifestyle and the importance of giving back to the community.

GOAL 3 - Promote sustainable eco-friendly lifestyle practices in Nebraska including cycling and recycling.Specialized, Greenstreet Cycles and the Race 2 re:Cycle support efforts that seek to offer education and/orimplementation of cycling as a primary or alternative mode of sustainable transportation. Both Greenstreet Cycles and the Race 2 re:Cycle are working closely with numerous local advocacy groups, such as Omaha Bikes and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the city of Omaha, in order to assist the community with the transition to sustainable transportation. Both organizations also firmly support improving recycling efforts in the Omaha community. Currently only 12 percent of all trash in the state of Nebraska is recycled. The Race 2 re:Cycle will encourage the community to become more conscience of their carbon footprint when it comes to transportation methods and recycling.

PROJECT SUMMARY

PROJECT SUMMARY: Please explain about the event you are wishing to receive sponsorship for in detail (attendees, other sponsors, benefits, activities, etc.).

The Race 2 re:Cycle is a unique and fun-filled cycling event taking place May 14, 2011, at Omaha's Midtown Crossing. Created to build awareness and help make the city of Omaha synonymous with both cycling and recycling, this family-friendly event will include the longest tri-state bicycle relay race in the Midwest, a family fun ride, Omaha’s only youth tricycle race and a day’s worth of free activities for the entire family. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day for numerous games and contests. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Omaha and Habitat Omaha ReStore. Early registration opens February 1, 2011.

Tri-State Relay RaceThe tri-state relay race (the longest in the Midwest) will run from Omaha’s Midtown Crossing through downtown to the suburb of Bellevue, east into Iowa, and down the Loess Hills Scenic Byway to Rock Port, Missouri and back to Midtown Crossing for a total of 172 miles round-trip. The relay race will be timed by Precision Race Results. An award ceremony will be held at the end of the race to acknowledge sponsors and winners in the following divisions: women single riders, women’s two person relay team, women’s four person relay team, men single riders, men’s two person relay team, men’s four person relay team, co-ed two person relay team, co-ed four person relay team. A total of five aid stations will be available along the route to provide participants with water, food, basic first aid supplies and encouragement. Timing chips, race bibs, long sleeve t-shirts and gift bags full of sponsor premiums and logos will be given to each participant. Since this will be a long race spread out over a three state geographical area, a bike inspection performed by Greenstreet Cycles will be required the evening before the race, followed by a mandatory safety and preparation presentation. There will be prominent signage along the route to direct cyclists and showcase the Specialized name and logo.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Family Fun RideThe family fun ride will include two distances, one seven mile route and one 14 mile route. Beginning at Midtown Crossing, this ride will run through downtown Omaha across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, south into Iowa along the Iowa Riverfront Trail and conclude back at Midtown Crossing. There will be one optional turnaround point on the Omaha side of the bridge (seven mile option) for families that do not wish to, or are not able to ride the full 14 miles. Two aid stations will be open along the route and will provide participants with food, water, basic first aid supplies and encouragement. Each aid station will be manned by volunteers of participating sponsors. The maximum registration fee for families is structured to allow all youth riders to participate for free. Each participant will receive a wrist band to verify enrollment, a t-shirt and a gift bag with sponsor giveaways. Greenstreet Cycles will help with race day registration, aid station support and event coordination. Turner Park would be the perfect place to showcase the Specialized Test the Best Demo Tour van and products that are traveling the U.S.

Youth Tricycle RaceThe children’s tricycle ride will include two separate age groups and distances. Ages 3-5 will have a one-eighth mile ride, and children ages 6-8 will have a one-fourth mile ride. The race committee has reserved Turner Park at Midtown Crossing so that the children may ride around the park without interference from traffic. Entry intothe children’s tricycle ride is free, and includes an educational safety presentation by league certified instructors before the ride. Greenstreet will provide demos of Hotwalks and Hotrocks for all children.

PROJECT SUMMARY

PROJECT INFO

Habitat for Humanity of OmahaAll proceeds from this event will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Omaha and the Omaha Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $25,000 for Habitat for Humanity of Omaha and the Habitat Omaha ReStore. A donation of this size would cover one-fourth of the entire cost of labor and materials required to build one house and bring one economically challenged family closer to home ownership. Together, we can accomplish this goal through registration fees from 500 adults and 300 relay racers.

PROJECT INFO: Please describe your plan of action for achieving these goals, such as advertising, promotions, sales, etc.

Build Community AdvocatesNot all companies and organizations are able to make financial contributions, but they offer their passion, excitement and support. By building strong relationships with community bike clubs and other nonprofit cycling groups, Race 2 re:Cycle will be able to reach a direct and targeted market. The advocates will participate in volunteer recruitment and public relations by announcing the race to their loyal following in Omaha. Each community group will also design an interactive family fun zone activity in Turner Park to promote cycling or recycling.

Implement Targeted Marketing CampaignAn extremely targeted marketing and public relations campaign will be implemented by Landmark Group to fullypromote the event and all sponsors. The marketing plan includes volunteer and participant t-shirts, flyers, online advertisements, posters, race programs and a website. National and local press releases will be sent out by both Midtown Crossing, a division of Mutual of Omaha, and Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. Landmark Group will advertise to an extensive e-mail database both before and after the event. An active targeted social media presence will be created to interact with participants, volunteers and fans year round. By marketing the Race 2 re:Cycle months in advance, the community of Omaha will begin their journey to improve their health and wellness by training for the event. The event will also encourage participants who do not own a bicycle to purchase one.

Obtain Corporate SponsorshipsSponsorship levels are designed to assist in marketing business’ products and services to the community through an organized expo, family fun zone, and targeted advertising efforts. Organizers of the Race 2 re:Cycle are seeking sponsorships from businesses who have a mission to bring awareness to wellness through cycling. By hosting this event, the Race 2 re:Cycle is providing its sponsors with the opportunity to educate Omaha about sustainable transportation, wellness and the importance of introducing cycling to youth. The financial contribution provided by sponsoring businesses will help achieve the budget goal in order to allow proceeds to go back into the community through the organization Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. Race 2 re:Cycle will provide its sponsors with the exposure they need to reach members of the community and grow their business.

DEALER ADVOCACY INFORMATION

DEALER ADVOCACY MISSION: Please summarize your advocacy mission, long-term goals, and history that pertains to your shop and community commitments.

When we decided to name the shop Greenstreet Cycles, we took it very seriously and made the commitment to ourselves and our community to actually be ‘green’ in every way we could; no ‘green washing’ would be allowable by our standards. This means that we recycle every single item we can and actually pay to do so because we feel that it is of utmost importance. Our shop was built with minimalist style which includes the work of local artists and fixtures built of reclaimed lumber, bamboo accents and concrete counter tops that were handmade by our staff. We re-use what we can and recycle the rest. We sell locally made items including cycling caps and bags and try to support locally and American-made product as much as possible.

The second aspect of the name Greenstreet focuses on providing an alternative, non-fossil fuel based transportation option. Again, Greenstreet has made a conscious effort to go green and 100 percent of our staff commutes nearly 100 percent of their trips to work (our goal this summer is to say 100 percent with confidence). We are doing our part to minimize Greenstreet’s environmental impact and are also dedicated to educating the public about how they can do the same. Throughout the year we offer bicycle commuting clinics describing how to safely reduce your carbon footprint by commuting by bicycle. Furthermore, Greenstreet manager Sarah Johnson is constantly working with the city of Omaha to get more ‘Complete Streets’ implemented in the area, thereby encouraging more of the population to see the bicycle as viable transportation. Get out of your car, onto the seat of a bicycle and help us ‘green’ up the streets in Omaha. Greenstreet Cycles is doing everything we can to push this movement.

In an effort to build a strong and tight knit local community, Greenstreet strives to promote local businesses through our patronage and through our participation in local business advocacy groups. Our passion for community extends to local philanthropic efforts and these effects can be seen across the Omaha metro area.

DEALER PAST SUCCESS: Please describe your shop's past success in recent projects, events, and/or benefits, within your community.

Greenstreet Cycles is essentially synonymous with unique community involvement and has been very dedicated to making a difference in the Omaha area since its inception in March of 2010.

Even before the doors were open, Greenstreet Cycles’ store manager Sarah Johnson was heavily involved in the cycling community, particularly with advocacy and volunteer efforts. She was invited to sit on the Leadership Committee of Activate Omaha whose mission is to create awareness, advocacy and excitement about activity and the importance of designing the Omaha community for active lifestyles.

Johnson is also on the board of Omaha Bikes, a local cycling-specific advocacy group, and has organized several fundraising events to benefit this group. One of the highlights includes a bicycling comedian who contacted Greenstreet for a benefit show opportunity. Sarah had only a few weeks to find a locale for the event, spread the word, find volunteers and pull it all together. The show was a success and raised more than $300 for Omaha Bikes. The next benefit show involved a special film screening of “Road to Roubaix,” which was sponsored and organized by Greenstreet Cycles and raised more than $100 for Omaha Bikes.

Another event she created was the 10-10-10 Old Town Elkhorn Cycle Fest. She was asked to be the event director by a group of business owners in Elkhorn who wanted to create a fun event that would showcase their town. Sarah was involved from the start and worked to create an entertaining event that would also act as a fundraiser for Omaha Bikes. The event drew in more than 100 cyclists and raised several hundred dollars for Omaha Bikes. The local business owners were so pleased that they’ve asked Greenstreet to be involved as the support for the ride and for Sarah to again act as event director.

The venture that Johnson is currently most proud of is the “Bicycle Friendly Destination” network that is spreading across Omaha. She had a vision of riding her bicycle to a restaurant, bar, book store, etc. and not only being accepted with her helmet hair but actually being almost catered to as a cyclist. So, she created the projectand is working with Omaha Bikes to get the word out. The concept is simple: ride your bike and be rewarded. Sarah has been out encouraging local businesses to support the cycling community in Omaha and the response has been an overwhelming "Yes!" There really are no hard and fast rules to how they support cycling; the only real prerequisite is bike parking, and the rest is up to the business. Slowly but surely, "Bicycle Friendly Destination" decals are popping up around town on the doors of businesses that want to show their support for people getting around on bikes. Whether they have outdoor seating, discounts or have just agreed not to laugh at helmet hair and Lycra, these businesses are partnering with Omaha Bikes to get more folks out riding. Please see the “Bicycle Friendly Destination” tab at www.omahabikes.org for further details.

Johnson has been working closely with the new City Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator to strategically place new bike parking racks around town as well as bike lanes and sharrows. She is also part of the Transportation Master Plan Stakeholder Committee and continues to be involved at the city level to push all things bicycle related.

Greenstreet is happy to be known in the community as the “green” shop in town and because of their commitment to the environment and the Omaha area, they were contacted by the Green Omaha Coalition (GOC) to lead Alternative Transportation Week during World Environment Day’s seven weeks of events. Greenstreet organized several bicycle-related events during this week and had a good turn out at each one; thisinvolvement provided the shop with great publicity and Sarah was interviewed several times, once on a local television program.

Johnson has volunteered numerous hours at the Community Bike Project (CBP) which is another nonprofit that strives to get at-risk youth and others on bicycles and educate them about safety and mechanics. Whether givinglectures at the CBP on ladies night or educating volunteers on fit basics, Sarah enjoys reaching out to the community through this organization.

Throughout the summer, Greenstreet Cycles offered more than 15 “Commuting Lunch and Learn” sessions at different businesses around Omaha and has definitely earned the reputation of the commuter shop in Omaha. These clinics have absolutely turned more people on to commuting by bicycle and the program grew throughout the summer and fall. More clinics are scheduled for the upcoming season. Sarah has also been asked to teach a course at Metro Community College this coming March on commuting basics and looks forward to continuing to educate interested cyclists in the area. This fall she earned the designation of LCI (League Cycling Instructor) by the League of American Cyclists and is one of only 16 in the Omaha area.

The shop has an indoor bicycle sprint racing set up, Greensprints, that has gained a huge following over the past year. The first Greensprints event was part of Greenstreet’s Grand Opening party in March; more than 200 people attended and more than 60 raced. There have been four Greensprints events thus far and each has been a huge success; many participants and spectators asked for a winter series which is currently going on. So far the events have taken place at local music halls or bar venues, and they are gaining recognition. We have been asked to bring the set up to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for a Rec Center event on campus for students as well as two more recent request for Greensprints on campuses in Omaha, one at UNO and the other at Creighton University. There are many opportunities to use Greensprints to raise money for nonprofit groups and bring awareness of the joys of bicycling to those who participate in the fun. Greenstreet is looking forward to these opportunities.

Greenstreet Cycles also provides a pedicab service to the Downtown Omaha area which has been very well received. It is a free service and a good way to help people in the Downtown area get to and from parking or to their evening destination. This service is the first of its type for Omaha and has helped gain recognition for the shop and shows again an alternative to typical transportation with a more sustainable eco-friendly option.

The shop has been involved in many different support roles for local charity rides and events including: The OWL Ride (Omaha With Lights); Landmark Group’s Race 2 re:Cycle, BRAN (Bike Ride Across Nebraska) and 10-10-10 Elkhorn Ride. Greenstreet Cycles also had a RAGBRAI team and plans to be involved again with these and many more rides in 2011.

There are several new projects in store for 2011, including a Bike to the Ballpark initiative which will encourage College World Series spectators to think about riding their bicycles to the stadium; the Partnership For Our Kidsprogram; bike share programs for the City of Omaha and many others.

In 2011, Habitat Omaha will build or renovate 31 homes.
