Queensland’s Glenlogan Park will

be out to win its second Sydney

stakes races in as many weeks

when Vaccine (Not A Single

Doubt), the sole filly bought by the farm

this year, runs in the ATC Gimcrack Stakes (Gr

3, 1000m) at Randwick.

Promising three-year-old Wild Ruler

(Snitzel), a colt Glenlogan shares ownership of

with the China Horse Club-Newgate syndicate,

boosted his Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) credentials with a first-up Heritage

Stakes (Listed, 1100m) victory last Saturday and

it will be Vaccine who steps out this weekend.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-

trained Vaccine, a $220,000 Magic Millions

graduate, won a heat at the first official two-

year-old barrier trials on the Kensington track

last week and Glenlogan Park stud manager

Steve Morley considers her to be leading hope

in the Gimcrack.

season and that was Vaccine,” Morley said

yesterday.

“Gai bought her on our behalf, but she was

one we’d lined up beforehand and that was the

only filly I selected and she looks like she’s got

some talent.”

Vaccine was one of 14 fillies nominated for

the Gimcrack, which also features the Ciaron

Maher and David Eustace-trained Enthaar

(Written Tycoon) who caught the eye of trial

watchers when winning her heat in the fastest

time of the day.

“Vaccine has pulled up well

(from her trial) and she has

worked well subsequently, so as

of Sunday afternoon, all was on

track.” he said.

“She would probably be on

second and third line (of betting)

behind the Written Tycoon filly.

And, gee, isn’t he flying? There’s Ole Kirk and Pippie and then there’s this filly

and she looks like a proper horse and she is the one everyone’s got to beat.”

Glenlogan Park also has a share in ATC Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m)

entrant Construct (I Am Invincible) while it also bred Gimcrack Stakes

runner Miss Hoff (Flying Artie), a stablemate of Vaccine.

Reflecting on the performance of Wild Ruler, who was having his first run

since a three-start autumn-winter campaign, the Heritage Stakes win was one

that helped justify the high opinion Peter and Paul Snowden have for the colt.

“He was terrific, Wild Ruler. He is a proper horse, there’s no two ways

about it. When he won on debut, he won the $500,000 Inglis Listed race,

and the reports have always been really strong on him,” Morley said.

“As that prep developed, we finished behind Rothfire (in Queensland)

and we were initially a little disappointed, but hindsight’s a good thing

because Rothfire’s the top of the tree.

“He’s a really good horse and he looks to have come back in really

great order.”

Meanwhile, Glenlogan principal Jon Haseler and Morley also share

in the ownership of Star Turn (Star Witness) two-year-old colt Montana

Flash, who won a barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday.

The Hawkes Racing-trained Montana Flash, a $550,000 Magic Millions

Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate who was also bred by Morley, came

from last after beginning awkwardly and being slowly away to take out

heat five over 900 metres by half a length.

“There’s plenty of positives to take out of the trial as he’s obviously got

a really good motor and he’s going to have plenty of ability when he learns

to put it all together.” was Morley’s assessment of Montara Flash’s trial.

“The reports from the Hawkes’ from the day that they first got him

after breaking in have always been really positive.

“They have always said that they really liked the horse and that he’s got

a good action, temperament and a good attitude.”

Morley has always taken a shine to Montana Flash from the time he

was born and that was demonstrated when the Magic Millions buying

bench was prepared to go past $500,000 to buy the colt by Vinery Stud’s

first season sire.

“He is just a beautifully proportioned horse. He’s got plenty of scope

and I would expect that he’ll mature out at that 16.1 height,” he said.

“He was a standout foal, a standout weanling and a superb yearling

and it looks like he’s maintained that frame.

“Some horses will go through different phases of their life when

they’re growing up, but at any point when you looked at that particular

colt, he handled himself really well and looked the part at all times. You’ll

go a long way to find a better looking horse.”

Bivouac to run in EverestGodolphin has locked in Newmarket Handicap

(Gr 1, 1200m) winner Bivouac (Exceed And

Excel) to represent its slot in the $15 million

Everest (1200m) and they remain optimistic

Trekking (Street Cry) will also gain a start.

Vin Cox, Australian managing director for

Godolphin, said Bivouac made strong appeal

as a dual Group 1 winner. "Bivouac is a proven

Group One sprinter with a magnificent profile

that we are keen to build on," Cox said. "He's a

very exciting racehorse who we expect will be

an outstanding addition to our stallion roster

next year. Glen Boss rode him in his Newmarket

victory earlier this year in what was Bivouac's

highest-rating win and we're delighted to have

him back on in the Everest." Cox said more than

one rival slot holder was interested in securing

Trekking and while a deal was yet to be

finalised, he expected last year's Everest third

placegetter to secure one of the five remaining

vacancies in the race.

Nature Strip passes trial testNature Strip (Nicconi) has come through his

latest barrier trial without incident and will

now take on Classique Legend (Not A Single

Doubt) in the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

at Randwick. The multiple Group 1 winner,

who was runner-up in the Concorde Stakes (Gr

3, 1000m), last visit to the trials ended in high

drama when he dislodged James McDonald

as the gates opened and competed riderless.

Fortunately, he came through it unscathed,

although stewards ordered him to trial again

before he could race. Nature Strip was given a

quiet hitout in the opening 900-metre heat at

Rosehill yesterday. "It's far from ideal but what

is ideal? You've got to work them somewhere,"

trainer Chris Waller said. "If he wasn't trialling

he would have been having a pretty solid gallop

because he's done well between his first run

and this."

Gytrash wins his heatNature Strip’s Concorde Stakes conqueror

Gytrash (Lope De Vega) also had a barrier

trial at Rosehill yesterday, winning heat

three over 1030 metres under race day

jockey Jason Collett. Gytrash, who will run

in the Everest slot held by Inglis, ran 1:01.40

seconds (last 600 metres in 34.23 seconds),

defeating Rammstein (Snitzel) by one and

three-quarter lengths. Intuition (Street Cry)

was another length and a quarter back in

third place. “As you’d have seen his ears were

pricked and he was very casual out in front,’’

Collett told Racing NSW. “I had to push him

out to make sure he was doing enough. I

probably would have liked it if he did a bit

more but he’s come along nicely. We have

time up our sleeve, that’s the main thing,

we’re not chasing our tail trying to get the

finishing touches right.’’ Gytrash will start in

the Everest without another run.

Exhibition gallop for FarnanGolden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan

(Not A Single Doubt), who is set to represent

Aquis in The Everest, will have an exhibition

gallop with stablemate Dawn Passage (Dawn

Approach) on the Kensington track tomorrow.

Farnan set up a big lead in the Run To The Rose

(Gr 2, 1200m) first-up before trying late to finish

unplaced. The performance prompted trainers

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott to abort

Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) plans and Aquis, in

partnership with Phoenix Thoroughbreds and

Kia Ora Stud, elected to press on to the Everest

on October 17. Tim Clark will partner Farnan

in the 1000-metre gallop while Rachel King will

ride Dawn Passage.

Rawiller picks upEverest mountFellow Everest runner Behemoth (All Too

Hard) will be ridden by Nash Rawiller. The

gelding’s owner Grand Syndicates confirmed

the booking of Rawiller for the David Jolly-

trained five-year-old gelding who has won

the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Sir

Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at his past

two starts.

Superstorm likely for TurnbullSuperstorm (Sebring) is set to line up in

Saturday’s pulsating Turnbull Stakes (Gr

1, 2000m) with owner/breeder Bob Peters

confident the conditions of the race will allow

him to sneak in on the minimum weight of 53.5

kilograms. Superstorm, who was second to

Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) in the Australian

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in February, was one

of 23 nominations on Monday and is set to try

2000 metres for the first time after finishing 12th

in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

ten days ago. “I think he’s going to sneak into

it because of the conditions of the race,” Peters

told Racing.com. “He gets in on the minimum

and that’s what is appealing for me. I looked

at the conditions of the race and he’ll come in

right on the bottom. It’s so tempting because

of that. While it’s not an ideal program going

straight to 2000 metres, his last run he didn’t

have a chance to do much at all. I’d prefer it

(Turnbull Stakes) to be 1600 metres but it’s a

track that I think will suit him.”

Defining day for Hickmott’s EuropeansRobert Hickmott’s stable stars Schabau (Pastorius)

and Django Freeman (Campanologist) will

head to Flemington on Saturday with the aim of

catapulting their way into their target races for the

spring. Schabau will run in The Bart Cummings

(Gr 3, 2500m) and needs a victory to get into

the Melbourne Cup, as he is number 72 in the

qualifying order. Django Freeman lines up in the

Turnbull Stakes and needs to win to force his way

into the Caulfield Cup, where he is also number

72 in the qualifying order. "They'll have their last

gallop at Bendigo early this week but they're both

ready to go," Hickmott said. "Django Freeman

will strip a lot fitter. He's lost ten kilos since his last

run and he's got good muscle definition. There's

a lot of positives but the query is whether he is up

to this class. Schabau was vulnerable late but he

battled away quite well. He had a good blow after

the race. Maybe he was a bit fresh and lacked a

bit of fitness which was a bit of trainer and jockey

error."

Dolan gets Edmonds’ tick of approval Toby Edmonds has given Robbie Dolan

a vote of confidence as he prepares to

partner talented mare Vanna Girl (Husson)

in the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at

Randwick. Dolan was booked for Vanna

Girl after Glen Boss elected to ride Funstar

(Adelaide) for Chris Waller. "Robbie rides

50 kilograms quite easily and he bobs up in

these big races from time to time because he

can ride so light," Edmonds said. "I've been

watching him ride for some time and he's

very aggressive on them which is par for the

course for most of those international riders,

especially the Irish and English riders, so it'll

suit her." Edmonds was pleased with Vanna

Girl's final public hitout before the Epsom

when she finished sixth in a 1200-metre

Warwick Farm barrier trial last Tuesday.

"She didn't get much room in the straight

but probably got just enough out of it to keep

her ticking over," he said.

Oliver to ride Mo’ungaDamien Oliver has secured the plum ride

on Mo’unga (Savabeel) in Saturday week’s

Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The $5

favourite ahead of Golden Rose winner Ole

Kirk (Written Tycoon) ($6), Stutt Stakes (Gr 2,

1600m) scorer Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock) ($7)

and King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) ($8),

Mo’unga has won his three starts including a

highly impressive victory in the Dulcify Quality

(Listed, 1500m) at Rosehill on September 12.

Trainer Chris Waller and part-owner Aquis

Farm resisted the temptation to run him in the

Golden Rose and diverted their attention to the

Guineas.

Toorak tilt for QuickieMr Quickie (Shamus Award) will aim for the Toorak

Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) on October 10 following

his seventh-placed finish in the Underwood

Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Phillip Stokes and Mr Quickie’s ownership group

year’s Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner.

The five-year-old was impressive in defeat in the

Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) first-up in August,

finishing second behind subsequent Sir Rupert

Clarke Stakes winner Behemoth.

Blue Sapphire for Ranting Ranting’s road to the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) on October 31 will likely continue with a

jump out at Flemington on Friday before heading

to the Blue Sapphire (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on

October 14. The three-year-old colt was last seen

finishing a close third behind Doubtland (Not A

Single Doubt) and Amish Boy (Star Witness) in

the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and has been

impressive in defeat on another two occasions

this campaign. “Ranting is really well. He is just

ticking over at the moment,” Troy Corstens said.

“We will probably give him a trial, maybe next

Friday, and then head to the Blue Sapphire with

him and then onto the Coolmore, hopefully. Ben

Melham has said he is keen to stick with him, so

Ben will ride him at his next (start).”

Boss to head to Melbourne Glen Boss has confirmed he will quarantine in

Melbourne in order to compete for his fourth Cox

Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) win on October 24. Boss, who

has won Cox Plate on Makybe Diva (Desert King)

(2005), So You Think (High Chaparral) (2009)

and Ocean Park (Thorn Park) (2012), will ride in

Sydney until October 17, where he will partner

Bivouac (Exceed and Excel) in The Everest (Gr

1, 1200m), before quarantining for the required

five days in Melbourne. He will then remain in

Victoria for the Melbourne Cup Carnival. “It

fills me with great pride that I will be able to

participate at the 100th running of the W.S Cox

Plate where I hope I will be able to honour riding

in such a momentous occasion,” Boss announced

on Monday. He will Skyward (Camelot) in the

Melbourne Cup on November 3.

Multiple options for OceanexMichael Kent Jnr has listed the options for

Melbourne Cup-bound Oceanex (Ocean Park) if

she misses a run in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)

next month. The five-year-old mare will line up in

the Turnbull Stakes on Saturday and will then head

to the Geelong or Moonee Valley Cup if she misses

the Caulfield Cup due to being well down the order

of entry. “She runs in the Turnbull now, not sure

who rides her there, and then we are hoping to go

to the Caulfield Cup,” Kent Jnr told Racing.com.

“She is number 56 in order and there will be a

natural attrition rate obviously. Hopefully we get a

run. If not, the Geelong or Moonee Valley Cup and

then into the big one.”

Cup penalty for Al GalayelAl Galayel (Zoffany) has been penalised 1.5

kilograms for the Melbourne and Caulfield

Cups after he impressively took out the JRA

Cup (Gr 3, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday

night, taking him to 52.5 kilograms for both

races. That victory meant Al Galayel passed the

ballot for the Caulfield Cup and rises to 47th

in the order of entry for the race on October

17, but is yet to pass the ballot clause for the

Melbourne Cup, with first acceptances being

taken at noon on Tuesday. “Al Galayel has

struck a rich vein of form this season winning

his past three starts and his maiden Group 3

victory at The Valley on Friday night came in

dominant fashion by a comfortable margin,”

Racing Victoria’s executive general manager

of racing Greg Carpenter told Racing.com. “It

was a competitive field that Al Galayel defeated

with three Derby winners, a VRC Oaks winner

and last year’s Caulfield Cup placegetter Mirage

Dancer (Frankel) among the beaten brigade

which added merit to his performance.”

into training instead of beginning stud duties at

Aquis Farm in Queensland this year. Olmedo

has raced just once since arriving in Australia

earlier this year and he was subsequently

retired at a service fee of $16,500 (inc GST),

but in recent months the decision was made to

instead place the six-year-old entire with Chris

Waller who stepped up his work yesterday

with a barrier trial at Rosehill. He finished fifth

under a hold from jockey Hugh Bowman, just

half a length from the winner Miss Invincible (I

Am Invincible) in heat five.

Quick Thinker sidelinedA back complaint has ended the spring

campaign of Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)

winner Quick Thinker (So You Think). The OTI

Racing-owned four-year-old, who is trained

by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman in New

Zealand, has raced twice in Melbourne this

spring, finishing fifth in Friday night’s JRA Cup

(Gr 3, 2040m) at Moonee Valley. Since then,

the injury was diagnosed and forced him to be

spelled.

NEW ZEALAND

Waller and Star snap up Only WordsChris Waller and Star Thoroughbreds have

purchased promising three-year-old filly Only

Words (Sweynesse) from Clinton Isdale. Only

Words, who landed the Wanganui Guineas

(Listed, 1200m) earlier this month, will head

to Waller’s Sydney stable in October. Her sire

Sweynesse (Lonhro), who stands at Novara Park

for NZ$6,000, was a multiple Group 3 winner

during his racing career and was crowned New

Zealand’s champion first season sire earlier this

year. “Together with Star Thoroughbreds we are

excited to have secured the purchase of exciting

three-year-old filly Only Words who took out

the Listed Wanganui Guineas recently and

she will join our Sydney stable early October,”

Waller announced yesterday. “The Guineas

victory has taken her career record to two wins

and one minor placing from six career outings.

With a black-type victory already on her record,

we can target similar races for three-year-old

fillies to further maximise her earning potential

and value as a broodmare.”

Helsinki to lead Williams’ Riccarton charge Helsinki (Savabeel), a NZ$525,000 purchase

from Book 1 of last year’s National Yearling

Sales, is set to spearhead Peter and Dawn

Williams’ assault on the New Zealand Cup

meeting, with their exciting filly nominated

for the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) on November 14. Helsinki, a runner-

up in two of her three starts, is set to run at

Avondale next week in a bid to cement her

place in the Group 1 at Riccarton. “She’s a

nice filly and she’s coming up really well,”

Peter Williams said. “She’ll run at Avondale

and if she goes well we’ll probably look at the

Soliloquy Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m) (at Te Rapa

on October 24). We’ll make our minds up

after that whether she’ll go down for the 1000

Guineas. I think she’s good enough. She was

unlucky not to win fresh-up. She got knocked

around a bit and did well for second.”

Eccles on trial for Melbourne trip Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray are pleased

with the preparation of New Zealand Oaks

(Gr 1, 2400m) winner Jennifer Eccles (Rip

Van Winkle) ahead of Saturday’s Windsor

Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) at Hastings, but

acknowledged that she will need to win well to

justify pursuit of the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

The four-year-old mare finished fourth first-

up in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) ten

days ago and will again be partnered by jockey

Matt Cameron at the weekend. “She is doing

very well,” Ritchie told Racing.com. “She will

go into this next one a little bit of an improved

horse with that run under her belt. Matt

Cameron was impressed with the run. She

was very willing and travelled keenly. When

he asked her to go 250 metres out she took

100 metres to get going but we aren’t racing

against three-year-old fillies anymore, we’re

in the big time.” Jennifer Eccles is one of 66

second acceptors for the Cox Plate on October

24, but Richie is yet to be sure of her future

plans: “She would want to win and win well

this weekend to justify that particular pursuit

(Cox Plate), but it is not out of the question,

otherwise we wouldn’t have stayed in it.”

New first season sire winnersBelardo - Elysium (2 f ex Sonning Rose by

Hawk Wing) sprung a surprise in the Weld Park

Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at the Curragh on Saturday

when the Noel Meade-trained juvenile ran out

an impressive winner and became the second

individual stakes winner for Darley first season

sire Belardo (Lope De Vega). Held up at the rear

by Billy Lee, she was switched left two furlongs

out and came home strongly to win by a length

and a half from Jim Bolger’s Aunty Bridy

(Camacho) while the Joseph O’Brien-trained

Thinking Of You (American Pharoah) was three-

quarters of a length third and the favourite No

Speak Alexander (Shalaa) was a close fourth.

Elysium broke her maiden over five and a half

furlongs on her second start at Navan in June

and has been placed twice since. She is out of

the Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f) runner-up

Sonning Rose (Hawk Wing) and was purchased

by her trainer as a yearling for €15,000. Haunui

Farm shuttler Belardo is also responsible for

dual Group winner Isabella Giles and stands

this season for $10,000 (+GST).

Exosphere - Darley’s Exosphere (Lonhro)

sired his fifth individual winner and first in

the northern hemisphere when Spherical (2

f ex Selfsame by Dansili) got off the mark at

the seventh time of asking when landing a Le

Mans claimer over 1400 metres on Friday.

The Andrew Hollinshead-trained juvenile

beat Kiss Pom (Pomellato) and Captain

Lougie (Captain Chop) by two lengths and a

short head. Spherical is a half sister to Hateya

(Footstepsinthesand), a Listed winner in

Sweden on Sunday. Exosphere stands for a fee

of $16,500 (inc GST) at Kelvinside in 2020.

Pride Of Dubai - Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry)

sired his 28th individual winner when Dubai

Honour (2 c ex Mondelice by Montjeu) kept on

strongly to get off the mark at the third time of

asking in a mile novice contest at Haydock on

Saturday. The William Haggas-trained colt beat

Oman (Australia) by two and a half lengths,

with Military Mission (Mastercraftsman)

another length and a quarter away in third. A

110,000gns purchase at Tattersalls last year,

Dubai Honour is the first foal out of the unraced

Monelice (Montjeu), who herself is a half sister

to the Group 3 winner Last Kingdom (Frankel).

Pride Of Dubai stands for $38,500 at Coolmore

Australia in 2020.

Territories - Darley stallions enjoyed more

success in France on Friday when Numero

Dix (2 c ex Timely Words by Galileo) provided

Territories (Invincible Spirit) with his 13th

individual winner. The Andre Fabre-trained

newcomer made a winning debut when taking

out a Chantilly maiden over 1200 metres by four

lengths. Lozen (Showcasing) finished second,

with Make Gold (Mayson) another length

and a half back in third. Territories stands at

Kelvinside for a fee of $11,000 in 2020.

Vadamos - Rich Hill Stud shuttler Vadamos

(Monsun) brought up winner number ten on

Tuesday when Desert Empire (2 c ex Got To

Dance by Selkirk) narrowly landed the Maiden

Auction Stakes, Division II (1m) at Lingfield.

The Ralph Beckett-trained gelding was making

his debut under Tom Marquand and defeated

Vino Victrix (Sir Percy) by half a length, with

Hemsworth (New Approach) a further length

behind in third. Vadamos will have his first

southern hemisphere two-year-olds in the

coming weeks; he stands for NZ$15,000 (plus

GST) at Rich Hill Stud this season.

New Group/Grade 1 winnersDialed In - Get Her Number (2 c ex Fancier

by Bernstein) provided his sire Dialed In

(Mineshaft) with a first Grade 1 winner after

claiming the American Pharoah Stakes (Gr 1,

8.5f) at Santa Anita on Saturday. The switch to

dirt proved key after two efforts on turf, with

Get Her Number now given an automatic

berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1,

8.5f) in November. Get Her Number defeated

Rombauer by three-quarters of a length, with

favourite Spielberg four and three-quarter

lengths adrift in third. Dialed In, the sire of

Breeders Cup Classic runner-up Gunnevera,

stands at Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky, where

he stood for a fee of US$20,000 (approx.

AUD$28,500).

Mehmas - Europe’s leading first season

sire Mehmas (Acclamation) broke new

ground on Saturday when Supremacy (2 c ex

Triggers Broom by Arcano) provided him with

a first elite level winner courtesy of a battling

performance in the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1,

6f) at Newmarket. Having his first shot at the

highest level after landing the Richmond Stakes

(Gr 2, 6f) at Goodwood in July, the Clive Cox-

trained colt made all to see off the sustained

challenge of 5-2 favourite Lucky Vega (Lope

De Vega) by half a length, with another of

Mehmas’ progeny, Minzaal, another two and

a quarter lengths away back in third. A £65,000

purchase from Goffs last summer, Supremacy is

the third foal out of Triggers Broom (Arcano),

who herself is a half sister to Hong Kong Group

1 winner Xtension (Xaar). Mehmas, who also

won the Richmond during his eight-race career,

could only finish third in the Middle Park in the

final race of his career before retiring to stud in

2016. He stood at Tally Ho Stud in Ireland for

a fee of €7,500 (approx. AUD$12,400) in 2020.

Bookmakers were impressed with Supremacy’s

performance and cut him to 8-1 for next year’s

Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f).

Mucho Macho Man - After twice placing

in Grade 1 company, Mucho Unusual (4 m

ex Not Unusual by Unusual Heat) struck at

the elite level for the first time after victory in

the Rodeo Drive Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) at Santa

Anita on Saturday evening, providing her

sire Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno) with a

second Group/Grade 1 winner. Mucho Unusual

defeated Maxim Rate (Exchange Rate) by one

and a quarter lengths with Lady Prancelot

(Sir Prancelot) third. With victory, the George

Krikorian homebred secured her place in the

Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare in November.

Mucho Macho Man, also the sire of three-time

Grade 1 winner Mucho Gusto, stands at Adena

Springs for US$10,000 (approx. AU$14,250).

No Nay Never - Former shuttler No Nay

Never (Scat Daddy) sired his third individual

elite level winner when Alcohol Free (2 f ex

Plying by Hard Spun) came out on top in a

thrilling edition of the Cheveley Park Stakes

(Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket on Saturday. Having

just her third start, the Andrew Balding-trained

filly saw off the persistent challenge of Miss

Amulet (Sir Prancealot) and the fast finishing

Umm Kulthum (Kodiac) to win by half a length

and a head. A winner at Newbury on her debut,

Alcohol Free was a well backed 7-2 chance

lining up off the back of a second in the Dick

Poole Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Sailsbury. Bred by

Churchtown House Stud, Alcohol Free was a

€40,000 purchase at Goffs in November 2018.

She is the fourth foal out of the Hard Spun

(Danzig) mare Plying, who has also produced

the Listed winner Alexander James (Camelot).

Plying herself is a half sister to the Group-

placed winner Kissing Lights (Machiavellian).

No Nay Never, who shuttled to Australia for four

seasons, stood at Coolmore’s base in Ireland

for a fee of €175,000 (approx. AUD$290,000) in

2020. The bookmakers introduced Alcohol Free

as a 16-1 chance for next year’s 1,000 Guineas

(Gr 1, 1m).

Written Tycoon -Arrowfield Stud and

Woodside Park Stud’s Written Tycoon (Iglesia)

brought up an interstate Group 1 double within

24 hours on Saturday when blueblood Ole Kirk

(3 c ex Naturale by Bel Esprit) took out the

Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), following

in the footsteps of Pippie’s victory in the A. J.

Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) on Friday night. Ole

Kirk became Written Tycoon’s tenth individual

Group 1 winner after his narrow victory over

North Pacific (Brazen Beau), giving trainers

Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes a quinella in

the $1 million feature. Written Tycoon stands at

Arrowfield Stud for $77,000 (inc GST) in 2020.

when Walton Street (6 g ex Brom Felinity ex

Encosta De Lago) got his head in front for the first

time since February 2018 when landing Friday’s

Godolphin Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at a blustery

Newmarket. The Charlie Appleby-trained six-year,

who was posting a fourth win in 14 starts, beat

Aloe Vera (Invincible Spirit ) by a length and a half,

with Laafy (Noble Mission) a further five and a half

lengths adrift in third. A Darley homebred, Walton

Street is the fifth foal out of Matriarch Stakes (Gr 2,

2000m) winner Brom Felinity (Encosta De Lago)

who herself is sister to Australian Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) winner Delago Brom, out of the Group 2

winner Brompton Cross (El Qahira).

Deep Impact - Tomokazu Takano-

trained five-year-old Centelleo (5 h ex Admire

Kirameki by End Sweep) landed the Sankei

Sho All Comers (Gr 2, 2200m) at Nakayama

on Saturday and became the 160th individual

stakes winner for his late sire Deep Impact

(Sunday Silence). The entire got up by a nose

from Curren Bouquetd'or (Deep Impact) while

there was a further length and a quarter back to

Stay Foolish (Stay Gold) in third. Centelleo was

recording his fifth win from 16 starts, while he

also ran fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup

(Gr 1, 2200m) at Kyoto last November and ran

second in the Mermaid Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at

Hanshin on his last outing.

Distorted Humor - Painting (4 m ex Hand

Painted by AP Indy) became the 18th individual

Group/Graded winner for her sire Distorted

Humor (Forty Niner), after winning the

Ontario Fashion Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Woodbine

on Saturday evening. Painting defeated by a

neck the former Lindsay Park-trained mare

Victory Kingdom (Animal Kingdom), who

was second in the Kewney Stakes (Gr 2,

1400m) at Flemington in 2019, while Sav (Big

Screen) was a distant third. Now a 27-year-old,

Distorted Humor stands for US$50,000 (approx.

AUD$70,000) at WinStar Farm.

Dunaden - Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

winner Dunaden (Nicobar) sired his first stakes

winner when Ranch Hand (4 g ex Victoria

Montoya by High Chaparral) registered a

surprise success in Thursday’s Rose Bowl Stakes

(Listed, 2m) at Newmarket. Sent off the 15-2

outsider in the four-runner field, the Andrew

Balding-trained four-year-old kept on well

to defeat Withhold (Champs Elysees) by half

a length. Ghostwatch (Dubawi) was another

length and three-quarters away in third, while

favourite Mildenberger (Teofilo) trailed in last.

Thursday’s victory was a fourth in 12 starts for

the homebred Ranch Hand, whose dam Victoria

Montoya (High Chaparral) is a Listed-placed

winning half sister to Group 2 winner Passing

Glance (Polar Falcon) and Hidden Meadow

(Selkirk), a winner at Group 3 level. Dunaden,

who took out the Melbourne Cup in 2011 and

also landed the following year’s Caulfield Cup

(Gr 1, 2400m), died last year at the age of 13 due

to complications following a paddock accident

at his home at Overbury Stud. He has so far

sired a total of nine individual winners from 30

runners.

Dutch Art - Cheveley Park Stud resident

Dutch Art (Medicean) sired his 41st individual

stakes winner when Bowerman (6 g ex

Jamboretta by Danehill) continued his fine run

of form on the all-weather with a victory in the

Diamond Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2.5f) at Dundalk on

Friday night. The Adrian McGuiness-trained

six-year-old beat Sky Seven (Helmet) by half

a length, with Gold Maze (Golden Horn) a

further two and a quarter lengths away in third.

Formerly trained by Roger Varian, Bowerman

has now won eight of his 18 starts, with a six

from nine record on artificial surfaces. Dutch

Art stood for a private fee in 2020.

Exceed And Excel - The James Cummings-

trained Coruscate (6 g ex Dazzler by More Than

Ready) comfortably landed the Testa Rossa Stakes

up the 176th individual stakes winner for 2012-

13 champion sire Exceed And Excel’s (Danehill).

Ridden by Damien Oliver, the gelding comfortably

saw off eight-year-old Runson (Delzao) by two and

a quarter lengths under, with favourite Order Of

(Danehill) brought up his 160th stakes winner on

Friday night when Glenfiddich (3 c ex Nothin But

A Dream by First Defence) broke through for his

first black-type victory in the Bill Stutt Stakes (Gr 2,

1600m) at Moonee Valley. Ridden on the speed by

Luke Nolen, the Peter Moody-trained Glenfiddich

- who had 15 ratings points on his rivals, having

twice been placed at Group 1 level - raced clear

to score by two lengths over the strong-finishing

Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder) with a further

head to Holyfield (I Am Invincible) in third.

Fastnet Rock stands for $165,000 (inc GST) at

Coolmore Australia this year.

Footstepsinthesand - Irish-bred I Am

Superman (5 h ex Fastnet Lady by Fastnet Rock)

earned Footstepsinthesand (Giant’s Causeway)

his 65th individual stakes winner when landing

Saturday’s Shannon Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at

Rosehill. The Paul and Peter Snowden-trained

I Am Superman, who had his first run for the

stable earlier this year having moved from

Michael O’Callaghan’s yard in Ireland, defeated

Riodini (Proisir) by one and a quarter lengths,

with Looks Like Elvis (All American) close

behind in third. Footstepsinthesand, who won

the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) in 2005, stood

at Coolmore in Ireland for a $15,000 (approx

AUSD$24,825) fee in 2020.

Galileo - The great Galileo (Sadler’s Wells)

sired his 329th individual stakes winner when

the Aidan O’Brien-trained Dawn Patrol (3 c

ex Gwynn by Darshaan) claimed a first stakes

victory in the Loughbrown Stakes (Gr 3, 2m)

at the Curragh on Saturday. He ran second

to Tiger Moth in a Leopardstown maiden on

his second start and was third to Santiago in

the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) before breaking

his maiden at Naas in July. He then finished

third in the Vinnie Roe (Listed, 1m6f) stakes

and ran down the field in the St Leger (Gr 1,

1m6.5f) on his last start. He was held up on

Saturday by Seamie Heffernan, got a gap down

the rail entering the final furlong and broke

through to lead before seeing off Barrington

Court (Mastercraftsman) by three quarters

of a length. Galileo also achieved his 328th

individual stakes winner when his son High

Definition (2 c ex Palace by Fastnet Rock) put

in a barnstorming finish to take out Saturday’s

Beresford Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at the Curragh and

in the process rocket to the head of the betting

for next year’s Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f). The

Aidan O’Brien-trained juvenile appeared to

have little chance of following up his debut win

over the course and distance last month when

sat last of the 13 runners straightening up, but

he galloped strongly to the line under Seamie

Heffernan, catching Monaasib (Bobby’s Kitten)

late on to post the most unlikely of victories.

Sent off the 9-5 favourite High Definition

needed every yard of the mile trip to register

his three-quarters of a length victory, with

Snapraeterea (Buratino) a further three lengths

away in third. The winner is the third foal out

of the Fastnext Rock (Danehill) mare Palace,

and follows his year older brother Innisfree in

adding his name to the star-studded Beresford

roll of honour. Galileo once again stood at

Coolmore in Ireland for a private fee in 2020.

Henrythenavigator - Gerardino Jet

(3 c ex Ardena by Dalakhani) earned

Henrythenavigator (Kingmambo) his 24th

individual stakes winner when landing the

Premio D’Estate (Listed, 1600m) at Milan on

Saturday. The Mario Marcialis-trained colt saw

off Cool And Dry (Sakhee's Secret), with Only

Time (Requinto) finishing third.

Into Mischief - Spendthrift Farm’s Into

Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) sired his 79th

individual stakes winner when Into Chocolate

(4 f ex Candy Drawer by Candy Ride) got up late

on to take out the Chillingworth Stakes (Gr 3,

6.5f) at Santa Anita on Friday night. The Clifford

Sise Jnr-trained four-year-old was winning

for the fourth time in 11 starts when beating

favourite Qahira (Cairo Prince) by three-

quarters of a length, that one edging out Amuse

(Medaglia d’Oro) by a neck in their battle for

second. Into Chocolate is the second foal out

of Candy Drawer (Candy Ride), a half sister to

the Grade 1 winner Harmonious (Dynaformer).

Into Mischief stood at Spendthrift Farm’s

Kentucky base for a fee of $175,000 (approx.

4-1 chance. Tomorrow’s Dream (Oasis Dream)

was a further three lengths away in third.

Now the winner of two of her nine starts, the

homebred Cloak Of Spirits is the first foal out of

Trainers Series (Gr 3, 1400m) at New Plymouth

on Saturday. The Mark Broznan-trained

five-year-old finished one and a half lengths

in front of second placed London Express

(Shamexpress), with Ladies First (Dylan

Thomas) a further two and a half lengths back

in third. Jimmy Choux, a five-time Group 1

winner, stands at Rosalee Park, WA.

Joshua Tree - Top Max (Joshua Tree)

justified favouritism and gained a first stakes

success in Sunday’s Grand Prix de la Region

(Listed, 2100m) at Strasbourg. The Henri-

Alex Pantall-trained four-year-old had been

knocking on the door with placings in stakes

races on his last three starts and became the

first stakes winner for his sire Joshua Tree

(Montjeu). Top Max took the honours by two

and a half lengths from Gourmet (Dunkerque)

while there was half a length back to Dato

(Mount Nelson) in third. Royal Lodge (Gr 2,

1m) and three-time Canadian International (Gr

1, 1m4f) winner Joshua Tree started his stud

career in 2015 at Haras du Grand Courgeon

and has stood at Kilbarry Lodge Stud in Ireland

since 2019 where his fee this year was €3,000

(approx. AUD$5,000).

Lope De Vega - Ballylinch Stud’s Lope de

Vega (Shamardal) sired his 75th individual

stakes winner when La Barrosa (2 c ex Bikini

Babe by Montjeu) retained his unbeaten record

with a victory in Thursday’s Somerville Tattersall

Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket. Trained by

Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, the juvenile

followed up his debut success at Ascot earlier

in the month with a length win over Dark Lion

(Dark Angel) as the 4-7 favourite. Qaader (Night

Of Thunder) was a further three-quarters of a

length away in third. La Barrosa is a graduate

of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling

Sale, having been purchased at Park Paddocks

last year for 750,000gns. Lope de Vega stood for

€100,000 (approx. AUD$165,725) in 2020.

Lord Of England - Placed in all previous

starts, Peaches (2 f ex Peace Of Glory by

Sholokov) broke her maiden on her fourth start

in the Winterkonigin Trial (Listed, 1500m) at

Cologne on Sunday, when stepping up to stakes

company for the first time, and became the

18th individual black type winner for her sire

Lord Of England (Dashing Blade). The Andreas

Suborics-trained two-year-old charged up the

rail in the closing stages to beat Amazing Grace

(Protectionist) while Kaliyah (Charm Spirit)

stayed on for third. Lord Of England stands at

Gestut Etzean where his 2020 fee was €6,500.

Makfi - Former Westbury Stud shuttle

stallion Makfi (Dubawi) brought up his 33rd

individual stakes winner on Saturday when

French import Attorney (6 g ex Tia Kia by

Montjeu) broke through for a first black-type

win in the Colin Stephen Quality (Gr 3, 2400m)

at Rosehill. The northern hemisphere-bred

Attorney, trained by Matthew Smith, produced

a strong staying effort to score by a length and

a quarter over last year’s German St Leger (Gr

3, 2800m) runner-up Djukon (Jukebox Jury),

with a nose to the winner’s stablemate Grey

Lion (Galileo) in third. Makfi stands at Shizunai

Stallion Station in Japan, where he has been

based since 2017.

Ocean Park - New Zealand stallion Ocean

Park (Thorn Park) sired his tenth individual

stakes winner when the improving mare High

Emocean (4 m ex High Joy by High Chaparral)

took out Sunday’s R M Ansett Classic (Listed,

2415m) at Mornington. The Ciaron Maher and

David Eustace-trained High Emociean won the

$140,000 Listed race by four and a half lengths

over Tavirun (Tavistock) while Eureka Street

(Street Cry) was a neck away in third. A winner

of four of her past five starts, High Emocean was

an NZ$80,000 purchase from the Wentwood

Grange draft by Darren Weir and agent John

Foote. “That was fantastic, she’s an amazing

little filly, she’s very brave,” Eustace said post-

race. “It was the plan to come here and win

a stakes race with her being a mare. She’s a

genuine stayer, so a Sandown Cup would have

to be a consideration for her, or a staying race

over the carnival at Flemington.” Ocean Park

stands at Waikato Stud for a fee of NZ$20,000

(plus GST).

Pastoral Pursuits - Ventura Rebel (3 c ex

Finalize by Firebreak) earned Pastoral Pursuits

(Bahamian Bounty) his 13th individual stakes

winner when landing Saturday’s Renaissance

Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the Curragh under Declan

McDonogh. The Richard Fahey-trained colt, who

had only run into a place once in his previous five

starts this season and was winless since May 2019,

produced a gritty performance to defeat Forever

In Dreams (Dream Ahead) by half a length, with

Stewards’ Cup (6f) winner Summerghand (Lope

De Vega) finishing two lengths behind the winner

in third. Ventura Rebel, bred by Crossfields

Bloodstock, was bought for £28,000 at Tattersalls

in 2018. He won his first two starts at Thirsk and

Ascot last year, but this was his first victory since,

with a third place in this year’s Commonwealth

Cup (Gr 1, 6f) his best effort prior to Saturday.

Pastoral Pursuits stood at Norton Grove Stud in

Yorkshire for £2,000 (approx. AUD$3,600) in 2020.

Planteur - Road To Arc (3 c ex First Choice

by Exit to Nowhere) won the Premio Conte

Felice Scheibler (Listed, 2000m) at Rome on

Sunday and became the fourth individual

stakes winner for his sire Planteur (Danehill

Dancer). Aldrodovar (Lord Chaparral) finished

second with Presidential Sweet (Golden Horn)

in third. Planteur, who scored his Group 1 in

the Prix Ganay (Gr 1, 2100m), stands at Haras

du Grand Courgeon for a fee of €2,500 (approx.

AUD$4,000).

Rip Van Winkle - The late Irish-bred

stallion Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) produced

his 32nd individual stakes winner on Saturday

when Subpoenaed (4 m ex Notice Received

by O’Reilly) landed the Golden Pendant (Gr

2, 1400m) at Rosehill Gardens. Subpoenaed,

trained by Chris Waller, took the $392,000 race

in convincing fashion, defeating Emeralds

(Sebring) by one and a quarter lengths, with

Sharaco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) runner-up

Jen Rules (Redoute’s Choice) back in third.

Subpoenaed’s well-fancied stable companion

Haut Brion Her (Zoustar), who won the

Sharaco, finished back in seventh. Rip Van

Winkle, who was standing at Windsor Park Stud

in New Zealand, died in August aged 14.

Rothesay - The Lindsay Hatch-trained

Jadentom (7 m ex Like The Wind by Deputy

Governor) provided Rothesay (Fastnet Rock)

with his seventh individual stakes winner

when landing the Weetwood Handicap (Listed,

1200m) at Toowoomba on Saturday. Ridden by

Andrew Mallyon, the mare defeated Red Chase

(Red Element) by three quarters of a length,

with Fiery Price (Hidden Dragon) running into

third at a big price. Rothesay, who also sired

Group 1 winner Rothfire, stands at Lyndhurst

Stud Farm for $4,950 (inc GST).

Shamardal - The late Shamardal (Giant’s

Causeway) sired his 150th individual stakes

winner when Algiers (3 c ex Antara by Platini)

took out the Prix Turenne (Listed, 2400m) at

Saint-Cloud on Wednesday. The Andre Fabre-

trained three-year-old was registering his

second win in six starts when beating Zeyrek

(Sea The Stars) and Dick Whittington (War

Command) by a length and three-quarters

and a length and a quarter. The Godolphin

homebred is the fourth foal out of the Platini

(Surumu) mare Antara, whose trio of Group 3

wins included back to back victories in Epsom’s

Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 1m).

Shamus Award - Swats That (3 f ex Is It A

Mosquito by Bel Esprit), an ANZ Bloodstock

News Maiden of the Week after her debut

win at Bendigo in March, became the eighth

stakes winner for Rosemont Stud’s Shamus

Award (Snitzel) when she took out Friday’s

Scarborough Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Moonee

Valley. Stuck wide throughout under John

Allen, the Leon and Troy Corstens-prepared

Swats That raced clear on the home bend

and maintained that advantage to the line,

defeating Highly Discreet (Street Boss) by two

lengths with Dirty Thoughts (So You Think) a

further nose away third. Shamus Award stands

for $19,800 (inc GST) at Rosemont Stud this

season.

Siyouni (Pivotal) sired his 38th individual

stakes winner when Darkness (2 c ex Kerila

by Makfi) came out on top in a tight finish to

Thursday’s Criterium de Lyon (Listed, 1600m)

at Lyon Parilly. The Jean-Claude Rouget-

in five starts when beating Euphoria (Sepoy)

and Colosseo (Street Boss) by a short neck

and a neck. Siyouni stood for a fee of €100,000

(approx. AUD$165,750) in 2020.

Tapit - Three-time North American

champion sire Tapit (Pulpit) brought up his

136th individual stakes winner, but his first

in Australia on Saturday when Love Tap (3 g

ex Smokey’s Love by Forestry) took out the

Gloaming Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Rosehill. Sent

out an odds-on favourite after wins at Nowra

and Goulburn to begin his career, the Richard

and Michael Freedman-prepared Love Tap led

all the way under a well-judged Nash Rawiller

ride to defeat Street Dancer (Pride Of Dubai)

by a length and three-quarters with a nose to

the regally-bred Bucharest (Deep Impact) in

third. Love Tap, the year-younger half-brother

to American Grade 1 winner Fighting Mad

(New Year’s Day), was purchased by Dynamic

Syndications for $110,000 at last year’s Magic

Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Tapit stood

at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky for $200,000

(approx. AUD$284,500) in 2020.

Written Tycoon - Not only did Written

Tycoon produce Saturday’s Golden Rose victor,

but he also brought up his 36th individual stakes

winner later in the afternoon when Stageman

(6 g ex Best Feature by Secret Savings) took out

the Black Heart Bart Stakes (Listed, 1200m)

at Belmont at his first start since December.

It was the first time the race, registered as the

Birthday Stakes, had been named in honour

of Perth star Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars),

who twice won the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1,

1800m) at Caulfield on this day. Ridden by Clint

Johnston-Porter, the Adam Durrant-trained

Stageman - who finished second in the race last

year - swept up well in the straight, hanging in

but holding a long head advantage over Cup

Night (Maschino) at the line, with Dance Music

(War Chant) another length and a half away in

third. Purchased for $310,000 out of the 2016

Inglis Ready2Race Sale, the Bob Peters-owned

Stageman traces back to Group 1 winner Miss

Margaret (Marscay), who was also bought by

Peters as a yearling.

Zoffany - Zoffany (Dansili) registered his

37th individual stakes winner when import

Al Galayel (7 g ex Glympse by Spectrum)

continued his good run of form by adding

Friday’s JRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m) to his record.

Sent out as favourite off the back of his defeat

of Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) winner

Orderofthegarter (Galileo), the Ciaron Maher

and David Eustace-trained Al Galayel looped

the field and raced away to score by two and

a quarter lengths; Plein Ciel (Mamool) filled

second, with the same margin back to 2018 ATC

Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Levendi

(Pierro) in third. Zoffany, who shuttled to

Australia for four seasons from 2012 to 2015,

stood at Coolmore’s Irish base for €22,500

(approx. AUD$37,150) this year.

Bring Me Glory (Street Cry) from the Victor

Chan stable rounded out Yu’s night with a

tough win in the last, the Class 4 over 1510

metres. Bring Me Glory had to pull out all stops

to beat Autumn Cloud (New Approach) ridden

by Frankie Choi who looked the most likely

victor after heading him one hundred metres

out, with Association Eight (Charm Spirit)

under Shogo Nakano close up in third.

Yu was runner up to Luis Corrales in last

season’s Jockeys’ Championships with 40

winners after setting up a big lead in the early

part of the season before being reeled in over

the last three months.

Pursuing Eagle (Holy Roman Emperor),

ridden by Massa Tanaka, made it two wins

from his last three runs with a narrow win over

Powerful Right (More Than Ready) and Charlie

Chan in the 3 & 4YO Handicap over 1050

metres, to put Irish trainer Wayne Smith on the

scoreboard for the new season.

The attractive son of Holy Roman Emperor

was a A$60,000 purchase at the 2019 Gold Coast

2YO’s in Training Sale.

Whilst its early days yet he does look a nice

young horse in the making; a good second

behind Cherry Road (Niagara) over 1200

metres on the turf back in July shows his talents

are not just limited to the sand, and on breeding

should have no trouble running out a strong

1500 metres.

Wayne Smith did a fine job in his maiden

season as a trainer posting 14 winners and 23

placings, 16 of those in the Q spot from his 132

runners for the year. He is steadily building up

his yard with now 17 horses in the stable.

Peter Lao got on the scoreboard for the

season thanks to a nice rails-hugging ride on

the Stanley Chin trained City Gold (Outstrip) in

the Class 4 & 5 over 1350 metres.

Lao made full use of City Gold’s inside gate

and on a night when some jockeys were happy

to skirt a little deep for the supposedly fast part

of the track, Lao read the play well and saved

valuable ground to dart through on the inside

after straightening, going home too strong for

Treasure Honey (Real Impact), with Heat Of

The Battle (Fighting Sun) running on for third.

Lao made a comeback to race riding last

December after a three year absence and after

initially struggling to get a decent ride; he broke

the ice in April this year with a win on Infinite

Treasure(Captain Rio) at cricket score odds.

In fact five of Lao’s six winners for the season

were all massive prices with the biggest payout

Military Star (Dragon Pulse) back in July who

paid out a whopping $1294.00 for the win for a

ten dollar investment.

The perseverance has paid off for Lao with

a number of trainers now beginning to utilize

his services. City Gold was well supported late

by connections for Friday’s jump at odds of 7/1.

BY HARRY TROY | @RACINGMACAU

Roger Yu was the jockey to follow on

Friday night's all weather card with

brilliant treble to give him an early

lead in the riders’ standings.

Sand-specialist Oriental Joyful (Redwood)

opened Yu’s account for the night when he

made it three straight wins in the Class 2 over

1350 metres. Sent straight to the front by Yu,

Oriental Joyful was always in control of the

race, despite a valiant attempt by Desi Style

(Captain Sonador) to run him down over the

concluding stages, the son of Redwood ran out

a convincing winner.

Oriental Joyful has been a real bargain

buy for owner Mr. Paul Chiang Chon Kai. The

now four year old was picked up for just NZD

$26,000 at the 2018 New Zealand Bloodstock

Ready To Run 2YO Sales. His record now

stands at six wins, two seconds and two thirds

from his 12 starts under trainer Danny Wong.

Saturday night's win also took him to well over

the HKD$1 million mark in prize money.

Yu did not waste much time in posting his

next winner, the Sio Cheong trained Garlic

And Spicy (Lonhro), in the Class 3 & 4 over

1050 metres. Garlic And Spicy had to dig deep

to stave off the challenge of Invincible (War

Chant), under Tshwaro Appie, to win by a length

and a half, then had to continue the battle in the

Stewards’ Room as Appie threw in an objection

against the winner, alleging interference over

the final 200 metres.

After hearing all the evidence the MJC

Stewards Panel, chaired by Australian Zane

Turner, found that whilst Garlic And Spicy

shifted out and made contact with Invincible

before being straightened by his rider,

Invincible also shifted in under pressure near

the 50 metres and raced close to the heels of

Garlic And Spicy. Therefore the panel could not

be satisfied that Invincible would have finished

in front of Garlic And Spicy and the objection

was dismissed.

ROAD TO THEMELBOURNE CUPW

hat a very different kind of

year it’s been! However, it’s

fantastic to be back in the

spring and we have some

very exciting prospects within the OTI team

with live chances in the Cups and beyond.

We’ve been able to bring all the horses

over from Europe that we wanted, which is

an achievement in itself, and testament to the

efforts made from the authorities in order to

make this possible. It’s been a difficult year

and there are many decisions being made on

the run, as it were, but really, between Racing

Victoria and IRT, I think it’s been handled very

well.

We have five horses in quarantine in

Newmarket as I speak. Three of them will then

be staying in Australia, with True Self for Willie

Mullins and San Huberto heading back to

Europe after their campaigns in Australia. The

other three we have coming over to stay are Mr

Satchmo, Sound Of Cannons and Selino, our

most recent acquisition from Qatar Racing.

True Self is probably the most conventional

of the five coming from Europe, however even

that has its challenges with Willie’s travelling

head foreman, Dave Casey, not currently with

the horse in Newmarket as he had to quarantine

in Sydney for two weeks prior to the horse

arriving. He’ll come out of quarantine two days

before True Self arrives and will then have to

drive from Sydney to Melbourne with the horse.

With San Huberto, there’s a three stage

process to get him here. He left Fabrice

(Chappet, trainer) to get to Newmarket and in

Newmarket he’s being looked after by Ed Peate,

they look after a number of our horses. He then

comes over to Australia and Matt Cumani takes

over. That’s been a consequence of Covid with

us unable to take a representative of Fabrice’s

over to Australia, and therefore we had to leave

him in the hands of a trainer in Australia.

A notable difference, however, is the

increase in cost to bring the horses over this

year. It’s probably on average $10,000-$20,000

more expensive to take a horse out there this

year.

With True Self, for example, we’ve had to

pay for two lots of staff and for one of them to

quarantine in a hotel while they’re in Sydney.

We’ve had to pay higher air fares to guarantee a

place for them on the flights to Australia.

However, if you’re travelling one way, and

the horse is staying over here to race, because

of Covid-19 Racing Victoria said that it couldn't

subsidise the fee of the horses quarantining

and therefore there’s an extra $10,000 for the

quarantine facilities.

The reality is that Racing Victoria highly

encourages and incentivises the international

trainers to come over here - and that’s been the

case for years.

EXCELLENCE IN THOROUGHBRED THROUGHPROFESSIONAL ACQUISITION PROCESSES

Page 21: Race meetings: they await Vaccine’s debut · gallop with stablemate Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach) on the Kensington track tomorrow. Farnan set up a big lead in the Run To The Rose

The racing this year, I think it’s going to be

just as competitive, despite the troubles. A fair

amount would depend on who Aidan (O’Brien)

puts on the plane. He has some serious horses

who are in quarantine; Santiago, Anthony Van

Dyck, Magical, Tiger Moth - and they will be

competitive.

And then there’s horses like Stratum who’s

in good form for Willie and then the local

contingent, who will be eager to exploit any

weaknesses there may be in the international

horses.

But of our own string, I think we have some

horses who are real contenders for the Cups.

Each horse has a plan formed individually.

To a minor extent we plan our races according

to who needs to qualify and achieve what. But

you don’t ever like to put your horse in a race

that you feel is not the right race for them.

Let’s take Young Rascal, he’s a horse that’s

already qualified and his next run is a toss up

between the Metropolitan in Sydney and the

Bart Cummings in Melbourne. If everything else

is equal we’d probably go for the Metropolitan

because that will give Haky a good chance to get

in.

As for Haky, once he showed the form

he did in the autumn, we decided the Bart

Cummings was going to be his route into the

Melbourne Cup.

The decision is marginal at the end of the

day, but if we thought we didn’t want to go to

Sydney and subject the horse to the travel, then

we certainly would have left Young Rascal in

Melbourne.

With San Huberto, once he won the Group

2 (the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier in June), we knew

we were likely to get in to the Melbourne Cup.

So then we plan the right preparation for him.

We gave him a run on a shocking track, we

didn’t want to give him a gut buster, knowing

that he’d be better on the firmer tracks here for

the Melbourne Cup.

The interesting feature for us, with our five

horses in quarantine this year, is that we’ve

actually got lots European owners in each

| 21 | Brought to you by Follow us @anz_news

EXCELLENCE IN THOROUGHBRED THROUGHPROFESSIONAL ACQUISITION PROCESSES

OTI’s Spring HorsesQuick Thinker - He disappointed in the

JRA Cup at Moonee Valley on Saturday, and

we have therefore taken the decision to stop

with his preparation and bring him back. It’s

disappointing for us and his owners, however

it’s with his best interests in mind

Young Rascal - He heads to the

Metropolitan at Randwick and hopefully we

can see some improvement from him, with

the Melbourne Cup very much on his agenda

True Self - Is in quarantine and will be

suited to a Caulfield Cup with the Melbourne

Cup also a target

San Huberto - In quarantine and will

join Matt Cumani. A leading contender for

the Melbourne Cup

Haky - Showed good form in the autumn

and will seek to gain entry to the Melbourne

Cup via the Bart Cummings on Saturday

Harbour Views - Will head to the

Caulfield Stakes with the hope he shows up

as a leading Cox Plate contender

Sound Of Cannons - In quarantine and

will now join John O’Shea. Will not target

Cups but could be a Bendigo Cup or Moonee

Valley Cup contender. I’d love to see him win

a Queen Elizabeth, or a race like that

Selino - In quarantine. He won’t be

qualified for the Cups this year, but he could

target a Moonee Valley Cup or the Lexus

Mr Satchmo - In quarantine. Not a Cups

contender, but one who can come through

the grades and look to strike at Group 3 level

Attorney - Won Colin Stephen on

Saturday. He’ll head to the St Leger next and

then could target the Lexus if he remains in

good form

Gallic Chieftain - He’s running very well

- we could go to the Herbert Power this year.

Now that might be one of those races that will

be a little bit weaker this year, with the lack

of an international presence, and of course

that’s a ticket into the Caulfield Cup

Inverloch - This horse is flying at the

moment, he’ll go to the Cranbourne Cup

and he’s one that could win his way into the

Caulfield Cup

of them, and that includes the three that are

staying over here.

In the old days we used to buy the European

owners out, but there definitely seems to be more

willingness from European owners to remain in

the horses, and for very good reason too.

So the team this year will very much have

a global feel about it. And that’s what OTI is

all about. It’s great to see that we’ve got more

European owners staying in the horses.

The way we operate, we know that our

owners enjoy the experience of being part

of OTI; it’s far more inclusive than other

partnership arrangements.

If you ask me what my ideal spring would

be, well, the race we all want to win this year

is the Cox Plate. It’s the 100th edition and so

that’s a really special race. We’d love a horse like

Harbour Views to try and take that.

Outside of that, if you’d said we’d have three

or four horses in the Melbourne Cup, that’s

quite possible, and as for which one you’d rate

the highest at the moment, I’d probably say San

Huberto.

In the Caulfield Cup, and again we’d like to

have two or three, the one that might be most

suited to the rough and tumble of that race is

True Self. But if all of the horses perform and

run their races I’d be delighted.

THE INTERESTING FEATURE FOR US, WITH OUR FIVE HORSES IN QUARANTINE THIS YEAR, IS THAT WE’VE ACTUALLY GOT LOTS EUROPEAN OWNERS IN EACH OF THEM, AND THAT INCLUDES THE THREE THAT ARE STAYING OVER HERE

BY STEVE MORAN | @STEVEM_MORAN

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

stage. And I think if we come back this time

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

The Valley last night.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

harboured plenty of criticism after his last

start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)

when he failed to settle on the front end.

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

1 horse with an impressive win in the $1

million sprint.

Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip

began well from the inside barrier and was able

to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.

The track record holder over the course

and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes

(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly

around the turn and was able to hold off a

gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a

short neck. Continued on page 2>>

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

of $1,879,285.
