Rabies…

• Affects central nervous system

• Comes from infected animals to humans

Who gets Rabies?

• Warm blooded animals can get it

• Including humans

How does it spread?

• From an animal bite

• Virus can get in from broken skin

Symptoms?

• irritability

• headache

• fever

• sometimes itching or pain

• progresses to paralysis

• spasms of the throat muscles, convulsions, delirium & death

Treatment?

• Scrub the bite clean

• Put immune globulin on the bite

• Five doses of vaccine

between days 0-28 of exposure

• No treatment = DEATH

Prevention?

• Removing of stray pets

• Having pets vaccinated

• Avoiding abnormal wild animals

- especially raccoons

FACTS

• Rabies is also called hydrophobia

• Few cases are reported per year

• You can get infected

10 days – 7 years
