1.0 SCOPE:

This procedure covers all necessary shop cleaning and painting activities to be performed at the

shop to support the execution of the Tankage Work. A separate Field Painting Procedure will be

developed later to all field painting activities. This procedure to comply with Company Procedure

DGS-MX-001 Painting.” This procedure shall comply with Project Technical Specifications and

their Amendments.

2.0 CODES AND STANDARDS It shall be the APPLICATOR’S responsibility to be, or to become, knowledgeable of the requirements of the

referenced codes and standards. The latest edition in force shall apply. 15 January 2008 is the effective date

for codes and standards i.e. the code or standard valid on that date shall be the one to be used.

3.0 SURFACE PREPARATION

Prior blasting cleaning, visible grease and oil shall be removed by solvent cleaning or solvent free

alkaline cleaner based on emulsifiers solution, ref. SSPC SP-1. After being dried, the washed surface

shall be tested for presence of residual oil and grease using water droplets.

3.1 External carbon steel blast cleaning to Sa2 1/2 shall be followed and on the interior carbon steel

components Sa3 blast cleaning shall be followed. Sa3 standard shall also be achieved on the

underside surfaces of Tank bottoms. Blast media shall be Steel Shot S230(+/- 80%) & G-50(+/-

20%). The blasting abrasive working mix must be capable of producing a 50-75μ uniform anchor

profile or as specified by the coating manufacturer for the relevant paint material to be applied. The

anchor profile shall be verified, in accordance with ISO 8503 using course extra course replica tape

and a spring loaded micrometer.

3.2 Abrasive blasted surfaces shall be either air blown with clean, dry air, or brushed cleaned before

priming. The substrate shall be inspected for the presence of visible dust or contamination, either of

which is unacceptable, and re-blown or re-cleaned as necessary.

3.3 Care shall be taken to prevent rusting and/or contamination of cleaned surfaces. Cleaned surfaces

shall be primed within 4 hours of blasting is done and before detrimental corrosion or

recontamination occurs. If rust forms, the surface shall be re-blast cleaned before priming. Abrasive

blasting shall not be performed when the ambient or the substrate temperatures are less than 3 deg. C.

above the dew point.

3.4 Surface preparation shall be carried out utilizing automatic surface preparation equipment. Areas that

can not be properly prepared by the automatic blast equipment shall be abrasive blasted manually

utilizing conventional blasting equipment.

3.5 For shop surface preparation requirements, work this procedure in conjunction with shop Plate Sheet.

4.0 SHOP PAINTING

4.1 For SHOP painting requirements, work this procedure in conjunction with shop Prime-Sheet and

Paints suppliers product data sheets..

4.2 Prior to coating weld margins are to be masked and or protected from coating. Weld margins are to

be ±50㎜ wide on either side of weld area. Weld through weldable inorganic zinc primers need not

to be masked / protected.

4.3 Priming will be carried out in generic formats:

1) Blast Sa2.5 and 25 microns zinc primer(outer shell and fixed roof externals).

2) Blast Sa3 and 25 microns zinc primer(inner shell, floating roof externals and fixed roof internals).

3) Blast Sa2.5 with 75 microns inorganic zinc(pontoon internals).

4) Blast Sa3 and 2 × 200 microns Glass Flake Epoxy(underside bottom plates).

4.4 Glass Flake Epoxy on Bottom Plate Underside

1) All surfaces should be clean and free from contamination. The surface should be assessed and

treated in accordance with ISO 8504.

2) Cleanliness: Power tool cleaning to min. St 2, mill scale free (ISO 8501-1:2007). Improved surface

treatment (blast cleaning to Sa 2½) will improve the performance. In case of hydro jetting the

flash rust degree shall not exceed moderate in SSPC and NACE standards for water prepared

surfaces.

3) Shopprimed steel

Clean, dry and undamaged approved shopprimer.

4) Coated surfaces

Clean, dry and undamaged compatible primer. Power tool cleaning to min. St 2 for rusted areas

5) Steel where blast cleaning may not be possible and on hydro jetted surfaces still being moist where

gloss and color retention is of minor importance.

5.0 MIXING, THINNING AND STORAGE

5.1 All containers of coating material shall remain unopened until required for use and shall be stored

under cover.

5.2 Coating material which has jelled or otherwise deteriorated during storage shall not be used.

5.3 All material shall be thoroughly mixed before use to a smooth and uniform consistency.

Mechanical agitation during application of inorganic zinc primers shall be sufficient to keep

pigment in solution.

5.4 Coating material shall be mixed in the original container and shall not be transferred until all settled

pigment is mixed in the vehicle. This does not imply that part of the vehicle may not be poured off

into another container to simplify the mixing.

5.5 Material, which does not have a limited pit life, or does not deteriorate on standing, shall be mixed

or re-mixed immediately before using but, if setting has occurred it shall be re-mixed before using.

Coating material shall not remain in spray pots or open buckets overnight, but shall be gathered

into a closed container or bucket and re-mixed before use.

5.6 Material Pot and shell life’s shall be adhered to all the times.

5.7 Mixing shall be performed in a well ventilated, clean and dust-free environment. All mixing shall

be performed by mechanical means. The mixing appliances shall be cleaned.

6.0 SHOP TOUCH-UP REQUIREMENTS

6.1 Abnormal or excessive runs and sags shall be abrasive paper cleaned until smooth and touched-up as

per each Plate-Sheet.

6.2 For touch-up or repair of localized damaged paint or to areas of incorrectly applied paint.

6.3 When applying the initial coat of paint to corners, edges or other irregular surfaces after spray

application and shall be done painting of stripe coats and touch-up paint.

6.4 Local damages during loading and unloading of tank steel plate shall be repaired as per company

Job specification (DGS-MX-001).

7.0 INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS

7.1 Surface preparation shall be checked visually using pictorial standards ISO 8501-1-1998.

7.2 Surface profile shall be Verified in accordance with ASTM D4417 method C or ISO 8503 using

course or extra course replica tape and a spring loaded micrometer.

7.3 A calibrated Elcometer or Microtest DFT Gauge shall be used to check the DFT for each coat of

paint applied, to insure the required DFT is achieved. If an area is found to be under the required

thickness, additional readings shall be taken, as needed to determine the area coated surface which

is under the specified thickness. The final DFT check shall be in accordance with SSPC PA-2.

7.4 A Daily Shop Blasting/Painting Inspection Report shall be completed each day that blasting and

painting operations occur.

7.5 Wet film thickness shall be spit checked in random areas as initial indication of the required film

thickness.

7.6 A sling psychrometer or whirling hygrometer in conjunction with Hydrometric Tables shall be used

to measure relative humidity and dew point. Paint application shall NOT proceed unless the relative

humidity and dew point are within acceptable limits set forth by the coating manufacturer.

8.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

8.1 Painting of any surfaces shall not proceed when any of the following environmental conditions exist:

1) When the surface temperature is above the paint manufacturer’s requirements.

2) When the relative humidity in the work area is greater than 85% or otherwise specified by the

coating manufacturer.

3) The surface temperature is less than 3℃(5℉) above the dew point of the air in the work area.

4) Moisture or other detrimental surface contamination is evident on the surfaces to be blasted,

primed or over coated. Detrimental surface contamination does not include ingrain stains.

8.2 Paint shall be stored per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

8.3 Application of each coat of paint shall be per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

8.4 Thinning of the paints shall be per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

8.5 Drying times between coats shall be per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

8.6 Mixing of the paints shall be per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

9.0 INSPECTION CHECK LIST

9.1 Materials

1) Verify that shelf life of the coating has not been exceeded.

2) Verify that coating and thinning materials are as specified and from the same manufacturer.

3) Verify that blasting materials are as specified.

9.2 Equipment

1) Verify adequacy of coating, cleaning and blasting equipment, hoses, spray guns etc.

2) Verify all inspection equipment are properly calibrated.

9.3 Surface Preparation

1) Verify that oil and grease are removed prior to surface preparation.

2) Verify cleanliness and dryness of abrasive.

3) Verify the adequacy of cleaning and blasting equipment.

4) Verify ambient, substrate, dew point temperatures are appropriate.

5) Verify the anchor profile is as specified using appropriate instruments.

10.0 DOCUMENTATION / RECORDS

10.1 The APPLICATOR shall notify the CONTRACTOR of any apparent conflict between Job

Specification, the application data, the codes and standards, and any other Specification noted herein.

Resolution and/or interpretation precedence shall be obtained from the CONTRACTOR in writing

before proceeding with surface preparation or application of coatings.

10.2 APPLICATOR shall submit the type and quantity of details and documentation for CONTRACTOR'S

authorization or information as listed in the individual material requisitions and purchase orders.

10.3 Any documents for application of the paint systems in accordance with this Specification shall be

followed as per Attachment 11-1 shop prime instruction.

Handling and storage7.Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors. Vapours may formexplosive mixtures with air. Prevent the creation of flammable or explosiveconcentrations of vapours in air and avoid vapour concentrations higher than theoccupational exposure limits.In addition, the product should only be used in areas from which all naked lights andother sources of ignition have been excluded. Electrical equipment should beprotected to the appropriate standard.To dissipate static electricity during transfer, earth drum and connect to receivingcontainer with bonding strap. Operators should wear antistatic footwear and clothingand floors should be of the conducting type.Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. No sparkingtools should be used.Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid the inhalation of dust, particulates, spray ormist arising from the application of this preparation. Avoid inhalation of dust fromsanding.Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where this material ishandled, stored and processed.Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (see section 8).Never use pressure to empty. Container is not a pressure vessel.Always keep in containers made from the same material as the original one.Comply with the health and safety at work laws.

When operators, whether spraying or not, have to work inside the spray booth,ventilation is unlikely to be sufficient to control particulates and solvent vapour in allcases. In such circumstances they should wear a compressed air-fed respiratorduring the spraying process and until such time as the particulates and solventvapour concentration has fallen below the exposure limits.

Toxicological information11.There is no data available on the preparation itself. The preparation has been assessed following the conventionalmethod of the Dangerous Preparations Directive 1999/45/EC and classified for toxicological hazards accordingly. Seesections 2 and 15 for details.

Exposure to component solvent vapour concentrations in excess of the stated occupational exposure limit may result inadverse health effects such as mucous membrane and respiratory system irritation and adverse effects on the kidneys,liver and central nervous system. Solvents may cause some of the above effects by absorption through the skin.Symptoms and signs include headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscular weakness, drowsiness and, in extreme cases, lossof consciousness. Repeated or prolonged contact with the preparation may cause removal of natural fat from the skin,resulting in non-allergic contact dermatitis and absorption through the skin. If splashed in the eyes, the liquid may causeirritation and reversible damage. Swallowing may cause nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, gastro-intestinal irritation andchemical pneumonia.

Based on the properties of the epoxy constituent(s) and considering toxicological data on similar preparations, thispreparation may be a skin sensitiser and an irritant. It contains low molecular weight epoxy constituents which areirritating to eyes, mucous membrane and skin. Repeated skin contact may lead to irritation and to sensitisation, possiblywith cross-sensitisation to other epoxies. Skin contact with the preparation and exposure to spray mist and vapourshould be avoided.

Product descriptionJotamastic 87 GF is a two-pack surface tolerant, glass flake reinforced, abrasion resistant, high solids epoxy mastic coating which may be applied in high film thickness. Available with different hardeners for varying substrate temperatures, Standard (Std) and Wintergrade (WG). This product is a part of a complete system which is certified not to spread flames.

Recommended useSteel where blast cleaning may not be possible and on hydrojetted surfaces still being moist where gloss and colour retention is of minor importance. Can be used alone or in combination with various systems of primers and topcoats. Gives excellent corrosion protection both in salt and fresh water. If exposed to sunlight chalking may occur. Glass Flakes improve abrasion resistance and general wear and tear characteristics.

Surface preparation

All surfaces should be clean and free from contamination. The surface should be assessed and treated in accordance with ISO 8504.

Bare steelCleanliness: Power tool cleaning to min. St 2, mill scale free (ISO 8501-1:2007). Improved surface treatment (blast cleaning to Sa 2½) will improve the performance. In case of hydrojetting the flash rust degree shall not exceed moderate in SSPC and NACE standards for water prepared surfaces.

Shopprimed steelClean, dry and undamaged approved shopprimer.

Coated surfacesClean, dry and undamaged compatible primer. Contact your local Jotun office for more information. For maintenance UHPWJ to WJ2 (NACE No.5/SSPC-SP 12) or Power tool cleaning to min. St 2 for rusted areas

Condition during applicationThe temperature of the substrate should be minimum +10°C (Std) (-5°C in WG) and at least 3°C above the dew point of the air, temperature and relative humidity measured in the vicinity of the substrate. Good ventilation is required in confined areas to ensure proper drying.

Hydrojetting of steel surface makes a wet surface. The surrounding air must have a relative humidity not exceeding 85 %. Before painting the surface shall not be glossy with moisture, but can have a patchy appearance.

Application methodsSpray Use airless spray

Brush Recommended for stripe coating and small areas, care must be taken to achieve the specified dry film thickness.

Roller May be used for small areas but not recommended for first primer coat, however when using roller application care must be taken to apply sufficient material in order to achieve the specified dry film thickness.

1. Provided the surface is free from chalking and other contamination prior to application, there is normally no overcoating time limit. Best intercoat adhesion occurs, however, when the subsequent coat is applied before preceding coat has cured. If the coating has been exposed to direct sunlight for some time, special attention must be paid to surface cleaning and mattening/removal of the surface layer in order to obtain good adhesion.

Other surfacesThe coating may be used on other substrates. Please contact your local Jotun office for more information.

Condition during applicationThe temperature of the substrate should be min. 5°C and at least 3°C above the dew point of the air, temperature and relative humidity measured in the vicinity of the substrate. Zinc silicate paints in general requires moisture for curing. At low humidity the curing will be improved by gently sprinkling fresh water over the paint film, and/or by artificial humidification of the surrounding atmosphere. The paint must be completely cured before topcoating, otherwise the adhesion of the subsequent coat will be unsatisfactory. Use Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) test according to ASTM D 4752-87 to verify the curing time before topcoating. Unweathered zinc silicate films are porous and the porosity may vary according to the weather condition during application and the application technique. When overcoating, the air in the pores will escape through the new coat of paint and may cause blisters or pinholes ("popping") in the coat just after application. To avoid this a mist coat/full coat technique is recommended: First apply a thin coat to fill the pores in the zinc silicate film and a few minutes later apply to full specified film thickness. In difficult cases it may be necessary to thin the next coat, or use Penguard Tie Coat 100 as first overcoat.

Application methodsSpray Use airless spray or conventional spray

Brush Recommended for stripe coating and small areas, care must be taken to achieve the specified dry film thickness. In order to avoid settling of heavy zinc, continuous mechanical stirring during application is recommended.

Mixing Comp. A is a liquid and Comp. B is dry zinc dust. Consists of 8 litres Comp. A and 18.5 kg/2,6L Jotun Zinc 100, Comp B or 18.5 kg/2,6L Jotun Zinc 100 ASTM D520 Type II, Comp B. Pour the zinc dust slowly into the liquid during mechanical mixing. The Comp. A must be well shaken before use. Stir until lump free and pass through a 60 mesh sieve.

Prevent the creation of flammable or explosiveconcentrations of vapours in air and avoid vapour concentrations higher than theoccupational exposure limits.In addition, the product should only be used in areas from which all naked lights andother sources of ignition have been excluded. Electrical equipment should beprotected to the appropriate standard.To dissipate static electricity during transfer, earth drum and connect to receivingcontainer with bonding strap. Operators should wear antistatic footwear and clothingand floors should be of the conducting type.Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. No sparkingtools should be used.Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid the inhalation of dust, particulates, spray ormist arising from the application of this preparation. Avoid inhalation of dust fromsanding.Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where this material ishandled, stored and processed.Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (see section 8).Never use pressure to empty. When operators, whether spraying or not, have to work inside the spray booth,ventilation is unlikely to be sufficient to control particulates and solvent vapour in allcases. Toxicological information11.There is no data available on the preparation itself. The preparation has been assessed following the conventionalmethod of the Dangerous Preparations Directive 1999/45/EC and classified for toxicological hazards accordingly. Seesections 2 and 15 for details.

Exposure to component solvent vapour concentrations in excess of the stated occupational exposure limit may result inadverse health effects such as mucous membrane and respiratory system irritation and adverse effects on the kidneys,liver and central nervous system.
