Bulletin Boards

Board 1 — Today’s News Is Tomorrow’s History1

This bulletin board helps students to tie the past with the present and encourages them to think about their lives in a historical context. Students will be encouraged to bring in articles for the board and will be rewarded with reward tokens if they bring in an article and give a short presentation explaining why they believe that article to be important.

Board 2 — The MapThis bulletin board helps students visualize where historical

events happen and helps them to determine the context of historical events based upon their location. The board is comprised of a large map of the United States with note cards containing a short description of a historic event and a piece of string leading to that event’s geographic location. For example a note card concerning the murder of Emmett till would be connected with a red string to a pushpin placed on Money, Mississippi and would read:

Communication with ParentsIntroductory Letter

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Welcome to a new school year! My name is Ms. Rebecca Johnston-Carter and I will be your child’s History teacher this year. I am from San Luis Obispo, California. I have a BA in History from Mount Holyoke College in Western Massachusetts and received my teaching credential from Brandman University. I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my excitement about working with your child this year. I love teaching because I care deeply about each of my students. I believe students can grow and develop by examining the issues we cover in class. However while I am your child’s teacher I am only one part of your child’s academic future. Parent encouragement and involvement along with student cooperation and participation are vital components of educational growth.  I encourage you and your child to join me on this academic endeavor.

For our academic growth this year we will follow the History-Social Science Content Standards for California Public Schools, which can be found online at the California Department of Eduation’s website. Students are expected to arrive in class each day prepared to learn, with all necessary books and assignments. Students will be informed each Monday of the week’s planned assignments and upcoming due dates.

Tonight your students will have brought home a copy of my classroom’s behavioral expectations and the consequences for offenses. I ask that you look over this with your child before signing the detachable portion at the bottom of the note to indicate your understanding and support of the classroom system. There is also space provided for you to express any questions, concerns or comments. Students will be required to return that portion to me.

If you ever have any comments, questions or concerns, I am available for phone calls and meetings (by appointment please) each day before and after school. To schedule a meeting, you may contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at (805) 215-6700.

I am excited about working with your child. I welcome questions or comments, and am looking forward to a great year!

Sincerely,

Miss Rebecca Johnston-Carter
