One of the most painful things in the world is when you are miles away from home and a family member is sick in hospi- tal. An opportunity to see them, call or maybe sitting by their bed side, making conversation and remembering good times; usu- ally helps take away some of the pain. Adolf did not have either one of these options, he is working is Australia and currently cannot afford to come home to be with his mother. Sheena Neinaber is (84), was awaiting surgery; Adolf (son) was afraid that something might happen to his mother without him getting a chance to see her. In a quest to help Adolf, his em- ployer contacted Mrs. Chetty (PRO) to assist set up a Skype call. It was difficult to put every- thing together, but Mrs. Chetty secured a laptop, downloaded Skype and video-called Adolf, with the help of our good Sa- maritan Dr Veerasamy (HOD Orthopedics) who kindly loaned his internet facility. On the 03 of July 2012, at R K Khan Hospital, made our first successful Skype call. Although Mrs. Neinaber was in pain but you could still see the joy on her face and her son Adolf was over the moon to be speak to his mother and most of all seeing her. The Comrades Marathon is arguably the greatest ultra

marathon in the world, where athletes come from all over

the world to combine muscle and mental strength to con-

quer the approximately 90 kilometers between the cities of

Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

In 2012 comrades marathon there were 19545 runners in

the down run, with 15197 Males and 4348 Females. Our

very own Erasmus Khumalo, (39) was part of the race. He

is a Clinical orderly in the CSSD Department. This was

Mr. Khumalo’s 9th race. He crossed the finish line at 11

hours and 10 minutes. He is a truly dedicated soul and he

maintains that he will continue to run until he gets his green

number

Funnies Doctor: “Tell me about your lifestyle, what did you do yesterday?”

Patient: “Well yesterday afternoon I waded across the edge of a lake, escaped from a leopard in the heavy brush, marched up and down a mountain, got caught up in a haak-en-steek bush, crawled out of quicksand and jumped away from an aggressive black mamba.”

Doctor: “Wow! You’re an awesome outdoorsman!”

Patient: “No, jus a rotten golfer.”

The word “comfort” awakens feelings of warmth, freedom from emotional and physical concerns, safety, security, being pampered and cared for and above all re-enforcing dignity, hope and positive expectations.

These attributes and feelings are embodied in “Thuthuzela”, Xhosa word for comfort, are realized in the establishment of the THUTHUZELA CARE CENTRE.

Thuthuzela Care Centers are one-stop facilities that have been introduced as a critical part of South Africa’s anti-rape strategy, aiming to reduce secondary victimization, improve conviction rates and reduce the cycle time for finalization of cases.

The centers are facilitated by top level inter-departmental management teams comprised of the departments of Justice, Health, Education, Treasury, Correctional Services, Police, and Social Development and designated civil society organizations. Such a center has opened on R. K. Khan Hospital premises. Services commenced on 1 August 2011

The multidisciplinary team on site are made up of a doctor, case manager, victim assistant officer, site coordinator, professional nurse; admin personnel and SAP officer.

The Centre handles 100 new cases and an average of 200 follow up cases per

month.

I joined R K Khan Hospital in April 2012 as a Public Rela-tions Officer Intern. I complet-ed my Diploma in 2011 in Public Relations Management at DUT. I am a confident, de-termined and hardworking in-dividual who is able to work under pressure, and under-stand work constrains, in that I am able to manage my time and prioritize relevant tasks to avoid schedule conflicts and delays. Besides being self-motivated and hardworking, I believe that my desire to con-tinuously learn puts me in a good position, in being a valu-able member of R K Khan Hospital.

R K Khan is very busy since it is both a District and Regional Hospital; which means we get a very large number of pa-tients and we are also situated in very diverse and large com-munities. I have seen that the reason sometimes patients have complaints it’s not due to bad service but the lack of in-formation and breakdown in communication. To assist we have signs that are in different

languages and also informa-tional posters in different lan-guages.

The Public Relations field has different aspects to it, but the ones we focus on in a Pub-lic/Government institution are to inform, educate and build relationships between the Hospital and its clients. Our department also acts as a link between the Hospital manage-ment, internal stakeholders (staff) and external stakehold-ers (patients), by opening dif-ferent channels of communi-cation. For example we have Patient information booklets, informational posters, a web-site and our offices are always open for any enquiries/queries that one may have; we also organize a number of staff functions, educational meet-ings and awareness cam-paigns.

I am very grateful for the warm

welcome I received at R K

Khan Hospital and this place

has become my second home.

This job will be my foundation,

which will secure me while

climbing the corporate ladder,

it will also help me gain more

skills and enhance my produc-

tivity in the corporate world.

I’m also very grateful for eve-

rything that I’ve learnt so far;

the valuable knowledge and

experience I have gained, it

can only build me and make

me a better PRO and of

course a valuable member of

the society.

FUNNIES...

A PRIEST notices a dead baboon on the street. He

goes to the police station to report it.

“Did you administer the last rites?” asks a cocky

constable behind the desk. Priest replied, “No, I thought I’d better inform the next of

kin.”

I'm a woman.. I push doors that clearly say PULL.. I laugh harder when I try to explain why I'm laughing.. I walk into a room and forget why I was there... I count on my fingers in math classes... I try to accomplish things with time still on the micro-wave... I lie sometimes to hide the pain... I cry a lot more than u think I do... I'm not so strong as my smile seems to be... I get attached to people who care even a little about me... A broken nail is as painful as a broken heart... I say it's a long story when it's really not... I fall in love too hard too fast. And I always care more than I should... Yes, I'm a woman... and I'm proud of it

Mobile Clinic Goes to Bottlebrush

Patient and Sister during a consultation

R K Khan staff, unloading medical supplies for the patients

Patients at Bottlebrush-Chatsworth, waiting to be assessed by the nurses from R K Khan Hospital

Since commencing our services to the com-munities of Welbedacht and Bottlebrush, from May this year, an average of 600 patients per month are receiving medical treatment. They would have gone unattended, due to dire fi-nancial and social circumstances. The Depart-ment of Health has reached out to the com-munities giving them some hope and restoring their faith in humanity.

Dedicated staff of our Primary Health Care Clinic prepare in advance to stock up and load the mobile unit. The less than ideal circum-stances do not faze this group of staff. It was good to watch them work as a team.

When we arrived, the community were waiting patiently in line outside the clinic and at the sight of the mobile unit rolling in, signs of relief and smiles could be seen.

The other half of the team continues working

at the hospital site (PHC) where another +/-

200patients is seen daily.
