• Respirators are provided to protect the health of its employees when hazards exist from breathing dusts, fumes, gases, smoke, etc.

• Employers must develop a written respiratory protection program that includes:– Proper respirator selection

– Medical evaluations

– Fit testing

Certain respirators at Cummins do not provide protection to exposed areas of the body. If the contaminated atmosphere contains vapors, gases or airborne particulate matter which may either irritate or burn the eyes or the skin, or can be absorbed by the body through penetration of the skin, the use of specialized eye, hand and/or body coverings may be required for protection.

Voluntary UseVoluntary Use

• An employer may provide respirators at the request of employees or permit employees to use their own respirators, if the employer determines that such respirator use will not in itself create a hazard. If the employer determines that any voluntary respirator use is permissible, the employer shall provide the respirator users with the information contained in 29 CFR 1910.134, Appendix D.

• Disassemble respirator, removing any filters, canisters or cartridges, straps and valves.

• Wipe the respirator with disinfectant wipes (70% isopropyl alcohol) to kill germs.

• Air dry in a clean area.

• Reassemble the respirator and replace any defective parts.

• Place in a clean, dry container.

Usage rules

For oil-lubricated compressors, the employer shall use a high-temperature or carbon monoxide alarm, or both, to monitor carbon monoxide levels.

• APR – If you smell gases breaking through the cartridge, immediately remove yourself from the work area and change out the cartridge.

• SAR – If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, stop work immediately, quickly get to a safe area, and remove the supplied air hood

Qualitative Fit TestingQualitative Fit Testing

• User must have completed medical evaluation and have physicians approval for wearing an air purifying respirator

• Fit test will use irritant smoke or banana oil

• Must complete exercises specified in the regulation

• Must pass qualitative test

Fitting and sealing depend upon:

• facial seal

• mask condition

• testing prior to each use

Change-Out ScheduleChange-Out Schedule

• Cartridges for gases and vapors need to be changed when the life of the cartridge is used. For Organic Vapor cartridges, this is every 100 hours of use, or every 2 weeks.

• Pre-filters for APR’s or Dust Masks need to be changed when resistance is felt in breathing.

• Using your nose to sense the odor is not always right.

• Acetone TWA

= 500 ppm OK

• Methanol TWA

= 200 ppm BAD

• Go to an area with uncontaminated breathable air.

• Loosen headbands and remove the facepiece.

• After each use, the respirator should be examined by trained personnel.

• Visually inspect all components for damage or wear, especially rubber parts. Replace parts where needed.

• Store in a clean dry area.

– Do not expose to excessive heat, moisture, contaminating gaseous substances or airborne particulates.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCEPERIODIC MAINTENANCE• As needed, remove, inspect and clean

the facepiece assembly.– Remove filters and/or cartridges from

connectors and discard them.

– Inspect headbands for wear. Check all elastomer and rubber parts for pliability and signs of deterioration.

– Remove the facepiece breathing tubs, inhalation connectors, inhalation valves, headband assembly, exhalation valve guard, valve and seat from the facepiece.
