The Psalms are the story of God’s kingdom sung in poetry. ~ Tim Mackie
It seems as though the writers of the New Testament are not attempting to identify and limit the Psalms that prefigure Christ but rather are assuming that the Psalter as a whole has Jesus Christ in view and that this should be the normative way of interpreting the Psalms.
~ Bruce Waltke The phrase its fruit in its season emphasizes both the distinctiveness and the quiet growth of the product; for the tree is no mere channel, piping the water unchanged from one place to another, but a living organism which absorbs it, to produce in due course something new and delightful, proper to its kind and to its time. The promised immunity of the leaf from withering is not independence of the rhythm of the seasons, but freedom from the crippling damage of drought.
~ Derek Kidner Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
~ Jeremiah 17:5-8 The power of the Psalms is not that they present us with a neat, theologically consistent package we can assent to (or reject) intellectually. Instead they confront us with the messiness and conflict of the life of faith lived out in the real world of body, mind, and spirit. In so doing they allow God’s Word to penetrate deeply to “dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow,” laying bare our inward contradictions, yet at the same time encouraging us to “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
~ Gerald Wilson

LEADER: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God together by praying— UNISON: Almighty and merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like
lost sheep. As individuals, families and as a nation we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We are a lustful people, gluttonous, greedy, lazy, angry, envious, and prideful. We have known what is good to do and have chosen instead to act with injustice and to hate mercy. Turn Your face away from our sins and blot out all our offenses, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

p G O S P E L LUKE 10:1-11 1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ LEADER: The Gospel of the Lord. PEOPLE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
q P R A Y E R UNISON: Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage: We
humbly ask that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Save us from violence, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought here out of the nations. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in your Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law, we may praise your name throughout the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, keep our hope from failing; all which we ask though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

p O God Our Help in Ages Past
5. The busy tribes of flesh and blood, with all their lives and cares,
are carried downward by your flood, and lost in foll’wing years. 6. Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come:
O be our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home. O God, Our Help in Ages Past by Isaac Watts.
p Faithful is Our King
p C R E E D Adapted from the Westminster Confession, Ch. 23 LEADER: Christian, what do you believe concerning the Civil Magistrate?
PEOPLE: We believe that God, the supreme Lord and King of all the world, has ordained government officials to be under Him over the people, for His own glory, and the public good; and, to this end, has armed them with the power of the sword, for the defense and encouragement of them that are good, and for the punishment of evil-doers.
LEADER: Therefore it is our duty—regardless of their infidelity or difference in religion—
LEFT: to pray for those in government, RIGHT: to honor them, LEFT: to pay taxes, RIGHT: to obey their lawful commands, UNISON: and to be subject to their authority.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
q O F F E R I N G LUKE 11:42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.” Please fill in the pew attendance pad, pass it down the pew and then back.

q P R O C L A M A T I O N PSALM 1 1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. LEADER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.
