OPENING FACEOFF Presence in the Polls: The Women's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) enters the final weekend of the season's first half with three teams ranked in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, while a fourth is receiving votes. Wisconsin, which leads the country with 21 wins and a .955 winning percentage (21-1-0), is the unanimous No. 1 in both. Minnesota is sixth and Ohio State is seventh in the USCHO.com poll, while the Buckeyes are No. 6 and the Gophers are No. 7 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings. Bemidji State received a vote in both polls. Time for a Break: Three WCHA teams play this weekend (Bemidji State hosts Minnesota State in league play, while Ohio State travels to Mercyhurst for a nonconference series), then the league pauses until Jan. 2. Wisconsin, which is off this weekend and idle the first weekend back in 2018, has the longest break with 34 days away from the ice between its Dec. 9 game at St. Cloud State and a Jan. 13 contest vs. Minnesota State. Bemidji State and Minnesota State have the shortest vacations, with 16 days off between their series this weekend and opening 2018 play on Jan. 2 (Beavers against Mercyhurst, Mavericks with an exhibition against the Korean National Team). Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State all take 26-day breaks, while Ohio State is idle for 19 days. Youth Movement: The WCHA has not had a freshman as its scoring champion (defined as the most points in league play) since Ohio State's Hokey Langan in the 2009-10 season (21g-22a=43pts). But, rookies have two of the top-three spots nearing the halfway mark of the 2017-18 campaign: Minnesota's Grace Zumwinkle leads the WCHA with 20 points (8g-12a) in 16 league games, while OSU's Emma Maltais is third with 16 points (6g-10a) in 14 contests. Overall (including nonconference games), Zumwinkle (11g-14a) is tied with Wisconsin sophomore Abby Roque (8g-17a) with a WCHA-best 25 points, while Maltais is third with 23 (8g-15a). Nationally, five of the top-20 rookie scorers are from the WCHA: Maltais is third with 1.28 points per game, Zumwinkle is fourth at 1.14, OSU's Tatum Skaggs (12g-6a=18pts) is tied for sixth at 1.00, Minnesota Duluth's Naomi Rogge (10g-6a=16pts) is 17th at 0.76 and St. Cloud State's Laura Kluge (4g-8a=12pts) is 18th at 0.75. Dynamic Duo in the St. Cloud State Net: Since November 10, St. Cloud State's goaltending tandem of freshman Emma Polusny and sophomore Janine Alder (a 2016-17 WCHA All-Rookie Team performer) rank No. 1 and No. 3 in the WCHA with save percentages of .973 and .936, respectively. Polusny also leads the league with a 0.97 goals-against average and two shutouts (tied) over that span. For the season, Alder and Polusny boast save percentages of .931 and .929, respectively, which rank second and third in the WCHA and ninth and 11th nationally. BY THE NUMBERS 1: Point needed by Emma Maltais to crack Ohio State's all-me, top-10 single-season scoring list for a freshman. With her next goal or assist, Maltais (8g-15a=23pts) will be ed for ninth in Buckeye history. 4: Overme wins this season for Minnesota, out of 15 overall victories. The Gophers (4-1-2 in OT) have received OT game- winning goals from senior Sydney Baldwin (Oct. 14 at Bemidji State) and freshmen Taylor Wente (Nov. 10 at Mercyhurst), Olivia Knowles (Nov. 26 at Lindenwood) and Grace Zumwinkle (Dec. 1 vs. BSU). 20: Career goals scored by Bemidji State senior Alexis Joyce, second-most in program history for a blue-liner. 50: Career points for Minnesota State senior forward Hannah Davidson, the 18th player in program history to reach that plateau. Davidson had three points last weekend against Lindenwood, with a goal and an assist in the opener and another goal -- for her 50th career point -- in Saturday's series finale. 60: Shots on goal for Bemidji State in a 5-2 win over RIT last Friday, the second-most in program history. THE WEEK AHEAD Minnesota State at Bemidji State: The lone WCHA league series of the weekend, as the Beavers host the Mavericks. Bemidji State leads the all-time series by a 37-26-10 margin, including an 18-11-7 advantage at home. The teams split the 2016-17 season series, with BSU winning the opener both times and Minnesota State bouncing back to win the finale. No. 7/6 Ohio State at Mercyhurst: The Buckeyes, idle last weekend, travel to Erie, Pa. for a nonconference series with the Lakers of College Hockey America (CHA). OSU is 9-1-0 in nonconference play under head coach Nadine Muzerall. cOaches pick minnesOta as preseasOn Wcha FavOrite

The coaches from the Women’s League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) have picked the University of Minnesota to dethrone Wisconsin and win the regular season title of a league that has 16 national championships in its 18 years of existence.

Minnesota, which has competed in the NCAA Frozen Four for the past six seasons, collected four first-place votes and 34 points in the preseason poll of the WCHA’s seven head coaches.

Wisconsin, the two-time defending WCHA regular season champion (and winners of three-straight WCHA Final Faceoff crowns), a Frozen Four participant the last four years and the 2017 NCAA runner-up, placed a very close second in the coaches’ poll with 33 points and three first-place votes. Minnesota Duluth, coming off a 25-win campaign and No. 5 national ranking, and Ohio State, which improved by four wins a year ago and won a WCHA playoff game, tied for third place with 23 points apiece.

Bemidji State, with 14 points, was selected to finish in fifth place and St. Cloud State in sixth. Minnesota State was picked as the seventh-place finisher.

Ohio State redshirt-junior goaltender Kassidy Sauve, a second-team All-American last season after setting the Buckeyes’ single-season saves record with 1,135 (second-most in WCHA history), was the coaches’ preseason choice for league Player of the Year. Sauve, who ranked fifth nationally with an OSU-record .942 save percentage in 2016-17, received six of seven votes. Wisconsin sophomore forward Abby Roque, the 2016-17 WCHA Rookie of the Year with a league freshman-best 28 points, received the other vote.

Minnesota forward Grace Zumwinkle, who joins the Gophers after being named the 2017 USA Today High School Sports All-USA Girls Hockey Player of the Year and the Minnesota Ms. Hockey award winner, earned the coaches’ nod as preseason WCHA Rookie of the Year. Zumwinkle received four votes, beating out Minnesota Duluth forward Ashton Bell, Bemidji State forward Clair DeGeorge and Ohio State forward Emma Maltais (one vote apiece).

• UMD earned a shootout victory and a tie with then No. 6 Minnesota before getting shutout last weekend at Ridder Arena. Friday night's 3-3 draw was followed by a 2-1 Bulldog shootout win, while the Gophers trampled UMD 5-0 the following night.

• Twice UMD trailed Minnesota by two goals in the third period, and twice the Bulldogs stormed back for the eventual 3-3 overtime tie. UMD then made its own on ice advantage and grabbed the extra WCHA shootout point with a 2-1 win in five rounds. Both teams combined for five goals in the third period, three that belonged to UMD, and two that were scored by rookie forward Ashton Bell.

• Friday's tie was the first time this season the Bulldogs did not suffer a setback when trailing after the first period (0-7-1) or second period (0-10-1). By contrast, UMD is 7-1 with a lead after 40 minutes.

• Saturday UMD suffered its worst loss of the season, and while the Bulldogs outshot Minnesota 7-1 in the third period, the Gophers outshot UMD 24-18 in the game. Overall, Minnesota outshot UMD 44-29 in the series while outscoring the Bulldogs 8-3.

• The Minnesota series wraps up a three-week, six-game road stand for the Bulldogs, who were 2-3-1 over that span away from Duluth. The Bulldogs are 3-9-1 outside of AMSOIL and 6-2 on their home ice.

• Bell ranks third in the NCAA and first in the WCHA with five power play goals, while her classmate Naomi Rogge, who continues to lead UMD in points, ranks No. 17 among all rookie scorers in the nation with a 0.76 points per game average on 10 goals and six assists for 16 points. Only five rookies in the NCAA have scored more goals than Rogge, who also ranks third in the WCHA among freshmen peers with those same 10 goals.

• The Bulldogs are once again the least penalized team in the NCAA, averaging just five minutes worth of penalties a skate and rank 40 out of 40 teams.

• UMD is off from outside competition until Jan. 5 when the Bulldogs will host the Korean National Team and Korean head coach and UMD alum Sarah Murray.

mavericksminnesOta state university

• The Mavericks (3-14-1, 1-9-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) split a two-game nonconference series with Lindenwood last weekend at Verizon Center. The Mavericks set a season-high in goals in a 5-4 win on Friday before losing the series finale 4-1 on Saturday.

• Freshman center Brittyn Fleming (3g-10a=13pts) is the Mavericks’ team leader in both assists (10) and points (13) this season. She recorded her first career game-winning goal in Minnesota State’s 5-4 win over Lindenwood on Friday evening. She scored the decisive goal on a breakaway with 1:30 remaining in the third period.

• Senior forward Hannah Davidson (4g-2a=6pts) had her best weekend of the season – tallying goals in both of Minnesota State’s games with Lindenwood over the weekend. She also added an assist in the Mavericks’ 5-4 win over the Lions on Friday night for her first multi-point performance of the season. In addition, Davidson recorded her 50th career point with her goal against Lindenwood on Saturday. She leads all current Mavericks in career goals (22), assists (28) and points (50).

• Junior forward Jordan McLaughlin (6g-6a=12pts), who leads the team in goals and is second in points, recorded one goal and one assist for two points in Minnesota State’s 5-4 win over Lindenwood on Friday night. It was McLaughlin’s second multi-point performance of the season – after tallying two goals and one assist for three points in the Mavericks’ season-opening win (4-1) at Lindenwood on Sept. 29. McLaughlin’s six goals, six assists, and 12 points this season are all career bests. She also leads the team with two game-winning goals in 2017-18.

• Senior forward Amanda Conway (4g-2a=6pts) scored her fourth goal of the season in the Mavericks’ 5-4 win over Lindenwood on Friday.

• Freshman defenseman Jessica Kondas (1g-1a=2pts) recorded her first career goal in Minnesota State’s 5-4 win over Lindenwood on Friday night. Kondas’ first collegiate goal could not have come at a bigger moment for the Mavericks – tying the game at 4-4 with 6:20 remaining in the game and setting the stage for fellow freshman Fleming’s game winner.

• The Mavericks enter the weekend leading the nation in blocked shots per game (17.28). Senior defenseman, and team captain, Anna Keys enters the week ranked sixth in the nation with 45 blocked shots.

• Fifteen different Mavericks have scored a goal this season, including nine who have scored at least two goals. McLaughlin leads the team with six goals, and senior forwards Conway and Davidson are tied for second with four goals each.

• In its last outings before the winter break, the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (3-14-2, 1-11-2 WCHA) was shutout in back-to-back games and swept at home by No. 1 Wisconsin, December 8-9. The series marked the 10th and 11th times the Huskies have been shutout this season.

• Offense continues to be SCSU's bugaboo. The Huskies head into break having been shutout in their last three games and their last 237:06 of play. It is the third time already this season they have been blanked in three or more consecutive games. They rank No. 7 in the WCHA and No. 40 nationally at 1.11 goals per game.

• With a 3-for-3 effort against the Badgers, SCSU's penalty kill has now killed its opponents' last 12 man advantage opportunities. The Huskies boast an 88.7 percent success rate on the kill, which paces the WCHA and ranks No. 6 in the country.

• St. Cloud State's goaltending duo of sophomore Janine Alder and freshman Emma Polusny has been dynamic over the last five weeks. Since November 10, Polusny and Alder rank No. 1 and No. 3 in the WCHA with save percentages of .973 and .936, respectively. Polusny also leads the conference with a 0.97 goals-against average and two shutouts over that span.

• Freshman forward Laura Kluge paces the Huskies with two goals and six points in her last five outings. She leads the team with eight assists and 12 points through the first 16 games of her rookie season and is second with four goals.

• After break, St. Cloud State returns home to face in-state rival Minnesota State on January 5-6, 2018 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Game time is 6:07 p.m. and 2:07 p.m. on Friday, January 5 and Saturday, January 6, respectively.

• The Huskies are 37-31-11 (.538) all-time against the Mavericks—their best winning percentage against a WCHA rival—including a split in Mankato earlier this season.

• SCSU and MSU split a two-game set in Mankato, October 27-28. The Huskies took the series opener, 4-2, before the Mavericks rallied for a 3-1 victory in the finale. Kluge led the way, offensively, for SCSU in the series, notching a league-high four points (1-3—4) en route to being named the WCHA Rookie of the Week for October 27-29.
