Welcome to QuotaAdvisor 4.1

Just a few words to begin . . .

Welcome to QuotaAdvisor 4.1, the only product that limits users’ disk space on Windows NT. This version contains many exciting new features such as Learn Mode, Push Install, SNMP support, quota replication, distributed templates, online monitoring, user quotas for devices, space quotas on directories and/or files, user query facility, integration with DiskAdvisor, user and predefined quota reports along with centralized management. QuotaAdvisor is BackOffice certified.

Please take some time to browse through the manual; we think it will prove worthwhile. You may want to pay particular attention to the Introduction and Using QuotaAdvisor pages. Introducing QuotaAdvisor

You know the old story -- your server runs out of disk space and crashes, so you buy more storage space, but it's only a matter of time before it happens again.

Unless you take charge with an appropriate corporate storage policy and an effective enforcement solution, your users are running the network. And, as you’ve undoubtedly discovered in those lonely hours spent trying to get things up and running, good file storage habits at the user level don’t come naturally.

QuotaAdvisor 4.1 gives you the ability to set and enforce disk quotas according to your corporate storage policy. And, better still, you set the quotas. You decide the policies.

QuotaAdvisor lets you get a grip on disk usage by providing:

Our Technological Advantage

Unlike other disk management products available for Windows NT, QuotaAdvisor 4.1 permits administrators to track disk resources in real time, before it's too late. This is achieved by WQuinn's innovative patent pending technology which tracks file I/O’s as they occur. Hence, quotas cannot be exceeded unless you authorize. Releasing the quota is as easy as deleting unnecessary files. E-mail, pop-ups and event logs alert users to threshold settings. Security profiles remain unchanged since the driver does not force file-permission revocation. It does, however, ensure full compliance with all applications and services, just as you expect it to, using a minimum of system overhead.

How to Use This Manual

This manual is designed to be both a users guide and a reference guide. Before installing QuotaAdvisor, you should read through the Installation chapter to ensure your system meets all the requirements, your user account has the required privileges to run QuotaAdvisor and to gain an understanding of what services are installed.

Next, you should read the Technical Considerations chapter as it discusses the different types of Quotas and how Quotas may affect different types of partitions.

The Using QuotaAdvisor chapter supplies definitions and step-by-step examples of creating Quotas. This chapter should be used as a learning tool for creating Quotas. The remaining chapters include in-depth descriptions of QuotaAdvisor commands and command utilities for your reference, and performance analysis.

Major Features

User Quotas

QuotaAdvisor can monitor and limit space by user by disk, directory and file. This is useful for limiting disk space on a user basis.

Directory Quotas

QuotaAdvisor can monitor and limit space on a directory and its subdirectories. This is useful for limiting the space a directory or share can utilize.

Disk Quotas QuotaAdvisor can monitor and limit space on a disk. This is useful for protecting the drive against disk full conditions.

Push Install

Push install allows you to install QuotaAdvisor on remote machines from a centralized management station without intervention.

User Learn Mode

Learn Mode reduces the need for Administrator intervention and makes configuration easier. QuotaAdvisor will automatically detect users as they place files in the object. The quotas are based on a system wide default, a specified template or a group template. The Admin needs to create a user mode quota only. No need to add users manually.

Directory Learn Mode

QuotaAdvisor will automatically detect directories as they are created within the object. The quotas are based on a system wide default, a specified template or a group template. The Administrator needs to create a directory learn mode quota only. No need to add directories manually anymore. NOTE: Quotas are placed only on the first level directories contained within the quota object.

Quota Replication

Quota objects created and deleted on a server are created and deleted on the replicated server as well. There is no limit to the number of replicated servers.

Distributed Templates

Distributed Templates allows the Administrator to place Quota templates anywhere on the network to aid in configuration, fail over capabilities and backups.

Group Templates

Allows the templates to be associated with a user or a group. For example, if a user adds a file to objects with learn mode enabled, QuotaAdvisor will search the template server for a template that is associated with that user. If that does not exist, Quota Advisor will search for a template that belongs to a group that the user belongs to. If that fails, QuotaAdvisor will use a predefined Fallback Template.

Apply Templates

Apply Templates allows the Administrator to make changes to thousands of quota objects in a single command, affecting only the desired fields.

Operational Wizard

QuotaAdvisor management functions are provided in an easy to use Quota management Wizard.

Added Quota Explorer Snap-in

This Snap-in is used to add and delete quotas from Explorer.

Set Quotas To % Of Current Used Automatically

Options to allow active servers with current usage requirements to auto configure quotas based on current usage.

Set Quotas to % Of Current Used

For example, if the current used is 100 MB and percent value is 120% a quota of 120MB is applied.

Customize Monitor Columns

The monitor screen has been updated to include customized the monitor columns, resizing of fonts, changing of colors and output formats in Bytes, KB and MB.

Threshold Triggers

Thresholds may be activated when the percentage of Perm Quota goes over and below the threshold limit.

DiskAdvisor Integration

DiskAdvisor Report Sets may be executed from a QuotaAdvisor threshold.

Server Management

Control of the QuotaAdvisor servers is provided in the Management Station. The functions are starting and stopping the services, configuring Exchange and SMTP mail and determining version information.

Live Updates

Direct access to live updates from the Management Station.

SNMP Traps

QuotaAdvisor messages may be sent threshold messages to an SNMP client as a trap.

Apply Templates in Batch

Templates may be applied immediately or sent to a batch file for processing at a later time.

QuotaAdvisor 4.1 Installation

QuotaAdvisor Installation Requirements

Windows NT 4.1

• Intel® x86 Platform

• Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.1 SP4 and above or Windows 2000 for the Management Station and server (Agent).

• 12 MB of free disk space

• Access to the Administrators account

Installation

QuotaAdvisor is installed by the SETUP.EXE program supplied on the distribution.

Note: If you are upgrading from a previous version of QuotaAdvisor you may have to reboot the server after installation.

Follow the steps below to install QuotaAdvisor from floppies:

• Place disk1 in the floppy drive and run SETUP.

• Installshield™ will guide you through the installation.

Follow the steps below to install QuotaAdvisor from the CD:

• Place the CD in the drive and a CD browser will appear.

• Select the Install button.


Follow the steps below to install QuotaAdvisor from the WEB:

• Connect to www.wquinn.com from your browser and go to the download page.

• Fill out the registration form.

• Download the desired software version.

• From the Windows NT system, run <product>.exe. This file is a self-extracting file. The files will be expanded into a specified directory.

• Setup is executed automatically.


Installation - Optional Modules

During installation of QuotaAdvisor a screen is presented with “check boxes” for installing optional modules. These are as follows:

• QuotaAdvisor 4.1 Server (Agent) - This option installs the driver, policy engine and quota

databases.

• Management Station - This option installs the QuotaAdvisor management module. This may be installed on Windows 95, Windows NT Workstation or Server.

• Explorers Snap-ins - This option installs the “Show Quota” and “Set Owner” Explorer Snap-ins. These may be installed separately on any Windows 95, Windows NT Workstation or Server to allow end users to view their quota consumption. The “Set Owner “Snap-in is only available to members of the Administrators Group. Explorer Snap-ins are only available in the Enterprise version of QuotaAdvisor.

• Command Line Utilities - This option installs the “Show Quota”, “Set Quota” and “Set Owner” command line utilities. This may be installed separately on any Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation or Server. These Utilities are only available in the Enterprise version of QuotaAdvisor.

Installation - QuotaAdvisor Administrator Password

During Installation, the Domain will be searched for a username under which the QuotaAdvisor services will run. By default the Administrator account will be used. It is not mandatory that you use the Administrator account. Whichever account is used, it must have the “log on as a service” right enabled. Also, this account plays an important part when trying to utilize mail within QuotaAdvisor. The QuotaAdvisor service, QAPolicy, will connect to mail using this account. The mail profile used by QuotaAdvisor must be accessible to this account. See the QAPolicy Service section for more information.

Installation - QuotaAdvisor Mail

QuotaAdvisor 4.1 provides a MAPI compliant and SMTP e-mail interface. If you want to set up e-mail, you will have to provide an e-mail profile (login) and password or SMTP server address. If this information is not correctly provided it may effect QuotaAdvisor 4.1’s ability to e-mail information on quota usage to your user population. Please review the release notes on testing and setting up E-mail or contact W. Quinn Associates support at [email protected].

Installation – SNMP on Windows NT 4.1

Following these steps to add the SNMP Service to a Window NT 4.1 system with TCP/IP Installed:

1. Log in as a member of the Administrator group.

2. Double click the Network icon in the Control Panel.

3. Click the Service tab.

4. Click the Add button.

5. Click the SNMP Service entry in the Network Service list box.

6. Click the OK button.

NOTE: Once you have installed the SNMP Service, be sure to update the system with the Windows NT 4.1 Service Pack 3 or later.

Configuring SNMP Service:

After the SNMP Service software is installed on your computer, you must configure it with valid information for SNMP to operate.

The Microsoft SNMP Service Properties window contains three tabs: Agent, Traps and Security.

1. The Agent tab allows you to specify comments about the user and the physical location of the computer and to indicate the types of service to report.

2. The Traps tab identifies communities and trap destinations. A community is a group of hosts to which a Windows NT computer running the SNMP Service belongs. You may specify one or more communities to which the Windows NT computer using SNMP will send traps. The community name is included when a trap is sent. Trap destinations are the names or IP addresses of hosts to which you want the SNMP Service to send traps with the selected community name.

3. The Security tab allows you to specify the communities and hosts from which a computer will accept requests. It also allows you to specify whether to send an authentication trap when an unauthorized community or host requests information. You might want to use SNMP for statistics, but you may not care about identifying communities or traps. In this case, you may specify the "public" community name when you configure the SNMP Service.

For details on how to configure SNMP Service, refer to the Microsoft Windows Resource Kit.

Setting Up Authorized Accounts.

QuotaAdvisor protects access to Add, Delete and Modify quota management functions. These functions are granted to users with the “Increase Quota” rights identifier. To grant this rights identifier, use “User Manager, User Rights” window to grant this right to the appropriate user(s). Make sure the “Show Advanced user Rights” check box is selected.

QuotaAdvisor Executables

This section describes the executables used by QuotaAdvisor.

• QAServer.exe - Provides server access to the QuotaAdvisor databases from the client. The management station, or client, communicates with this server using a named pipe. This executable is installed on the system as a NT service. Multiple management stations may communicate with a server at the same time and are dynamically updated. The security on the named pipe is inherited from the client. If the client does not have the proper rights identifiers, save and delete operations will fail. All users may perform read operations; however, you may place permissions on the SAMgr.exe to restrict access to the management station.

• QAPolicy.exe - Communicates with the driver on the NT Server and processes all threshold messages and threshold actions. This executable is installed on the NT Server as a service.

• SCMgr.exe - The QuotaAdvisor 4.1 Management Station is used to manage QuotaAdvisor 4.1 objects and monitor and report on quotas. It is also able to manage quotas on remote NT Servers. The remote NT Server must have QuotaAdvisor 4.1 Server installed.

• QAFilter.sys - The QuotaAdvisor 4.1 filter driver.

QAServer Service

QAServer processes requests made by QuotaAdvisor clients. It runs as a Windows NT service and is controlled by the service control manager located in the “Control Panel, Services” window.

This service needs to be assigned to an account with the “Increase Quota” rights identifier. This service must be started with the proper privileges, which include, “logon as a service” , in order for the client to operate. All functions performed by QAServer are logged and placed in the System Event Log.

QAPolicy Service

QAPolicy processes threshold messages from the QuotaAdvisor filter driver. QAPolicy runs as a Windows NT service and is controlled by the service control manager located in the “Control Panel Services” window. This service does not need any special privileges. All functions performed by QAPolicy are logged and placed in the System Event Log.

If you wish to send QuotaAdvisor threshold messages or reports via Microsoft Exchange Mail, the account that the QAPolicy service is running under must have access to the mail Profile specified during install. You may verify this by logging in as the user running the QAPolicy service, from control panel run mail, and select “Show Profiles”. If the Profile specified at login does not appear, add it. If you are using SMTP mail, the account is not necessary.

Deinstalling QuotaAdvisor

Please follow the steps below to remove QuotaAdvisor from the system:

• Exit the StorageCeNTral GUI.

• Execute the uninstall from the QuotaAdvisor program group. WARNING: If you plan to upgrade QuotaAdvisor, answer YES to the Retain Databases prompt. If you answer NO, all the quota policy settings will be lost.

Licensing

Demo License

QuotaAdvisor uses a new "off the shelf " license module to control trial periods. The trial distribution contains a 30-day key that is activated when the product is installed.

Permanent License

Once a purchase is made, you will receive a QuotaAdvisor 4.1 distribution kit, a unique CD key and a license agreement. Please remove the trial version and install the purchased copy. You may contact Quinn by calling (703) 758-0707, or via email at [email protected] if you have any problems.

1. THIS PRODUCT IS OWNED AND LICENSED BY W. QUINN ASSOCIATES, INC ("WQUINN"). BY OPENING THIS PACKAGE YOU AGREE TO READ THE LICENSE IN BACK OF THIS COVER BEFORE OPENING THE ENCLOSED ENVELOPE CONTAINING DISKETTES. THE PRINCIPAL TERMS OF THE LICENSE ARE SUMMARIZED ON THIS COVER. IF, AFTER READING THE FULL LICENSE, YOU AGREE TO ITS TERMS, THEN YOU MAY OPEN THE ENCLOSED ENVELOPE AND USE THE DISKETTES THEREIN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS OF THE FULL LICENSE. Universal Software Product License Agreement

1. In this License: "Software" means a computer program and/or data in machine-readable form and subsequent corrections and updates supplied by W. Quinn Associates, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as "WQUINN"); "Documentation" means user manuals, handbooks,pocket guides and all other related materials in printed form supplied by WQUINN; "Product" means the "Software" together with the "Documentation" packaged herein and covered by the invoice accompanying this package and License; "Configuration" means the computer hardware upon which the Software is operated together with the number of users and usage patterns which are the basis for the fee covered by this License.

2. This License is either a "Single User", "Multiple User", "CPU" or "Site" license, as specified in payment documentation. A "Single User" License is for use on a single computer from a single terminal connected to that computer. A "Multiple User" license is for use in any configuration where the Software is made available to more than one user or for hire to users other than the Licensee. A "CPU" license is for the use on a specific computer system(s). A "Site" license is for the use on a specified number of CPUs on a site.

3. THIS LICENSE INCLUDES AN INITIAL "TEST DRIVE" PERIOD OF THIRTY DAYS DURING WHICH THE LICENSEE MAY TEST THE PRODUCT ON A VARIETY OF CONFIGURATIONS. THE LICENSEE WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY NOTIFIED BY THE PRODUCT OF TIME REMAINING IN THE "TEST DRIVE" PERIOD. b) For "Multiple User" licenses covering at least fifteen servers, this

license includes an option for the end user to obtain a Universal License Key ("ULK") directly from WQUINN for a fee stated in applicable payment documentation. In order to qualify for a ULK, the Licensee must have paid the applicable license fee for the Software, or issued a valid purchase order for the Software. The Licensee must also have submitted to WQUINN a signed copy of this Universal Software Product License. The ULK provides a single key for the Licensee to continue use of all copies of the Software possessed bythe Licensee, in accordance with applicable

payment documentation.

By purchasing and accepting delivery of a ULK, the Licensee agrees that the Software is accepted, that WQUINN has no further obligation under any applicable "TEST DRIVE" period to accept return of the Software for a full refund, and that the ULK is proprietary to WQUINN and is subject to the terms of this License applicable to WQUINN's proprietary information. Upon annual renewal of the License, a Licensee having a ULK agrees to conduct a census of copies of the Software in its possession and to make any increases in license renewal payments indicated by the census.

A Licensee who has been issued a ULK agrees that within thirty days of notification by WQUINN the Licensee will make reasonable arrangements for WQUINN, or a suitable auditor commissioned by WQUINN, to conduct an audit of the copies of the Software in possession of the Licensee.

4. Licensee acknowledges that no title to Product is transferred by this License, and that Licensee may retain possession of Product only by complying with the terms herein. A Licensee may transfer all its rights under this License, provided the Licensee retains no copies of the Product, including documentation, and the Transferee accepts any applicable obligations under this License.

5. WQUINN, in consideration of payment in accordance with payment documentation applicable to this License, and subject to the terms herein, hereby grants Licensee a nonexclusive right to use the Software. The Software may be used temporarily on a backup computer during a malfunction of the computer for which i t is licensed. The Software may be copied by Licensee to the extent necessary for backup purposes to allow use of the Product as authorized herein. Licensee agrees to reproduce Owner's copyright, trade secret and proprietary notices on all copies of the Software. Documentation may not be copied by Licensee. A Multiple User Licensee may use the Software only in accordance with the Configuration identified on applicable payment documentation.

6. After the Test Drive Period a Multiple User, CPU or Site Licensee may operate the Software on a Configuration larger than the Configuration identified in the payment documentation to which the License applies by agreeing to pay an invoice, under the terms and prices current at the time of the change, for the incremental addition to the License fee corresponding to the difference between the fee already paid and the fee for the larger Configuration. Upon payment of the invoice, WQUINN will provide a Multiple User Licensee with an appropriate extension of the software key necessary for continued use of the Software.

7. Licensee acknowledges that the Product contains valuable copyright, trade secret and other proprietary information and remains the valuable property of WQUINN. Licensee agrees not to obtain such information by reverse engineering, decompiling or dissassembling, nor disclose or make available information so obtained to any person for any purpose other than as is necessary for Licensee's use as authorized by this License. Licensee shall take all reasonable steps to assure that only authorized persons have access to information so obtained and to assure that persons authorized to have access to information so obtained do not further disclose this information except in accordance with this License.

8. If within the Test Drive Period the Product does not substantially perform as described in the documentation and WQUINN is unable to furnish a cure for the defect, Licensee may return the Product to WQUINN, if purchased directly from WQUINN, or to the authorized distributor from which it was purchased, for a full refund of payment actually made. All the Software, Documentation and printed materials must be returned in good condition with a letter from an authorized officer of Licensee certifying that all other copies of the Product have been destroyed.

9. IN NO EVENT WILL WQUINN BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, OR OTHER DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, ARISING FROM THE USE OF OR THE INABILITY TO USE THE PRODUCT. IN NO EVENT WILL WQUINN'S LIABILITY EXCEED THE LICENSE FEES PAID FOR THE PRODUCT BY THE LICENSEE.

10. If specified in the applicable payment documentation, WQUINN agrees to provide Licensee with maintenance services. Such maintenance services may include: a) new releases of Software as they are made available, together with applicable documentation, with or without express carrier shipping charges; b) fax support; c) telephone support between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, excluding standard holidays, responding in a timely manner upon receipt of Licensee's first call; d) a la carte support at WQUINN's then current hourly rates; e) premium twenty-four hour support; and f) such other maintenance services as may from time to time be made available by WQUINN.

11. Where WQUINN undertakes maintenance responsibilities as specified in applicable payment documentation, Licensee understands and agrees that WQUINN cannot be responsible for maintaining the Software if the Software is used or operated in a manner or in an environment not consistent with its intended purpose or is modified or repaired in any manner which adversely affects its operation or reliability. Furthermore, Licensee understands and agrees that WQUINN has no obligation to maintain, support or correct any Software used in a Configuration not authorized by this License.

12. Where WQUINN undertakes to provide to the Licensee new releases of the Software as specified in applicable payment documentation, and if WQUINN, at its sole discretion, releases a revision of the Software within the period covered by the applicable payment documentation, after sixty (60) days from shipment of the new release to the Licensee, WQUINN's obligations under this License shall no longer apply to prior releases of the Software.

13. Where WQUINN undertakes to provide to the Licensee new releases of the Software as specified in applicable payment documentation, and Licensee encounters a problem with the Software, Licensee agrees to advise WQUINN of the precise nature of the suspected error, malfunction or defect, either in writing by a Software Performance Report (SPR) or by telephone. Licensee will provide WQUINN with whatever listings, printouts, screen copies (if available) or additional data or on-site support which WQUINN may request as necessary or helpful to reproduce the environment in which such licensed Software operated.

14. Where WQUINN undertakes to provide to the Licensee new releases of the Software as specified in applicable payment documentation, and Licensee encounters a problem with the Software, WQUINN will evaluate that portion of the Software which is shown to contain any error, malfunction or defect. If WQUINN determines that the problem is a defect in the Software,

WQUINN will provide the following additional services: a) if the Software is completely inoperative, provide a temporary correction; and b) assist the Licensee in preparing an SPR for submission to WQUINN. If WQUINN determines that there was no malfunction or defect in the licensed Software, Licensee shall pay for all time and materials spent by WQUINN attempting to determine and correct Licensee's problems. Licensee will be billed separately for shipping, documentation and media required to provide program corrections.

15. WQUINN DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT ITS SERVICE EFFORTS WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IN ALL CASES, NOR DOES WQUINN REPRESENT OR WARRANT THAT ALL ERRORS, MALFUNCTIONS OR DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED.

16. The warranties, limitations of liabilities and remedies set forth in paragraphs 8 through 15 above are exclusive and in lieu of all others, oral or written, expressed or implied. No WQUINN dealer, agent, employee, or distributor is authorized to make any modification or addition to this License.

17. Where WQUINN undertakes to provide to the Licensee new releases of the Software as specified in applicable payment documentation, unless WQUINN or Licensee provides the other party with written notice of cancellation at least sixty (60) days prior to the anniversary date of the applicable payment documentation, WQUINN will invoice Licensee for a one year extension of maintenance in advance of the anniversary date and at a rate based upon the then current maintenance pricing for the Software. Licensee understands and agrees that payment for extension of the License is not contingent upon the receipt of any material goods from WQUINN. WQUINN shall be held harmless for any claim whatsoever arising out of discontinuance of maintenance of Software by WQUINN due to nonpayment by Licensee or failure of Licensee to obtain a software key extension.

18. If Licensee wishes to extend maintenance which has been terminated by the Licensee, or terminated by WQUINN for nonpayment, Licensee may do so by written notice to WQUINN and payment in advance of a reinstatement fee, separate from and in addition to the maintenance fee.

19. WQUINN will defend, at its expense, any action brought against Licensee based on a claim that the unaltered Product infringes a United States copyright or patent and will pay resulting costs, damages and attorney's fees finally awarded against Licensee in such action attributable to such claim provided WQUINN is given prompt written notice of such claim and sole authority to defend it. If such claim is asserted, Licensee agrees to permit WQUINN, at its option and expense, to produce for Licensee the continuation of the rights granted to i t under this License or to replace or modify the Product so that it is non-infringing. WQUINN will not be liable and will not defend Licensee if the alleged infringement is based on the combination, operation or use of the Product with data or software not supplied by WQUINN or hardware other than the Configuration identified.

20. Licensee agrees it will not export, directly or indirectly, the Software and/or the Documentation, in whole or part, to any country or destination where such export is prohibited or restricted by the United States government, without the prior written consent of WQUINN and in compliance with the Export Administration Regulations of the Department of Commerce.

21. This license is the complete agreement between Licensee and WQUINN and supersedes any previous agreement, oral or written, or any other communication relating to this subject matter.

22. Any additional License Fees and Maintenance Fees undertaken by Licensee in accordance with the terms of this License are due and payable to WQUINN within 10 days from the date an invoice covering same is sent to Licensee. Fees are based upon 1) WQUINN'S standard charges in effect on the date the software is licensed, or the maintenance is subscribed, by Licensee or 2) a specific price quotation from WQUINN.

23. This License shall be governed by the laws of Virgnia and the United States.

Chapter Three

Technical Considerations

Cluster Support

QuotaAdvisor 4.1 Cluster Edition (QACE) supports Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) and other third party cluster offerings. It is a separate installation kit and CD from the QuotaAdvisor 4.1 Enterprise Edition. QACE utilizes three database files to store current quota values, disk space allocation and policy definitions.

QAQuotasV4.dat This file contains the current quota values and disk space allocation.

QAPolicyV4.dat This file contains the policy definitions such as thresholds, threshold actions and mail settings.

QAPolicyV4.idx This file contains an index for the policy definition database.

The three database files are created on the drives where the quotas exist. For example, if a quota is created on C:\USERS, QuotaAdvisor will create three database files in the root directory of C: All subsequent quotas created on the C partition will use the database files located in the root directory. We place the databases on the drive for following two reasons:

1. Support for removable drives. By placing the quota definitions and quota values on the drive, it

may be moved to any NT machine with all quota information intact.

2. Support for clustering. By placing the quota definitions and quota values on the drive, both nodes on the cluster have access to the same quota information. A Cluster Example:

The cluster consists of Machine A and Machine B. Machine A has exclusive access to A1, A2 and A3. Machine B has exclusive access to B1, B2 and B3. QuotaAdvisor saves each drives quota information in a file, QAQuotasV4.dat, located in the root directory. It is necessary to place the databases on the drive to eliminate the dependency between the system and the quota information. The environment is illustrated below.

To demonstrate fail over, let’s say Machine A fails. Machine B obtains access to the drives A1, A2 and A3. At this point, all six drives are exclusively mounted by Machine B. QAFilter will detect the “Mount” request made by the operating system, load the QAQuotasV4.dat and begin performing quota operations for the drive. The quota transition is automatic and no user intervention necessary. All quota definitions and values are maintained. The new transition environment is

illustrated below.

QuotaAdvisor Check Disk facility

The QuotaAdvisor Check Disk facility ensures the integrity of the quota database. A scan occurs when a device is mounted and a quota on the device has the “scan_check_needed” flag set. Devices are mounted at system startup, as well as any time they are accessed after being dismounted. Devices may be dismounted while the system is running by a user requesting a CHKDSK, or through certain operations in disk administrator. These events are uncommon; the normal case would be that scan check runs at boot time.

The “scan_check_needed” flag is set by several events:

• When a new quota is added - this protects against quotas being added without a scan being requested, as well as against crashes after a quota is added and before the scan starts. This option is also set when a quota is modified or deleted in way that would require a scan (modification or deletion of a “do_not_count_default” quota.)

• Any time our driver detects that a quota’s used amount is incorrect - This protects against the possibility that an alternate system root was booted and file allocations were changed.

• At the start of a scan, all quotas on the object being scanned have the “scan_check_needed” flag set. - This protects against a crash during the scan.

• The “scan_check_needed” flag is cleared on successful completion of a scan.

Types of Quotas

QuotaAdvisor enables you to set three types of quotas; Absolute quotas, User quotas and Group quotas. Learn mode applies to both User and Absolute quotas.

1) Absolute quotas may be set on a device, share, directory or file. A default quota limits the size of an object, regardless of file ownership. You may also consider this a directory quota. If a 50MB absolute quota is set on Object C:\users\JDoe, that directory, and all of its contents, will be limited to 50MB regardless of who owns the files in that directory or who writes files to that directory.

2) User quotas may be set on a device, share, directory or file. A user quota limits the amount of space that an individual user may own in an object. If a 50MB user quota is set on user JDoe on object C:\Public, then JDoe will be limited to 50MB of space in C:\Public. It is important to note that JDoe must actually own files in C:\Public for any space to be charged to his quota.

3) Group quotas may be set on a device, share, directory or file. Group quotas work in the same fashion as user quotas. Once again it is important to note that the group SID must own files in the object for any space to be charged to the group quota. Though file ownership by a group is not common, it is possible. Third party applications may apply ownership of a file to a specific group SID. More commonly, the Administrators group often owns files. If a member of the Administrators group copies a file, the ownership of the copied file is changed to Administrators, not to the SID of the user who copied the file. Keep this in mind while testing user quotas.

Learn Mode There are two types of learn mode quotas, user and directory. If a user learn mode quota is enabled, any new user that allocates space within the quota object will be given a user quota. This quota is based on a system wide or a predefined template. If the directory learn option is enabled, any new directory created under the quota object is given an Absolute quota. This quota is based on a system wide or a predefined template. Directories are detected one-level beneath the quota object.

File Ownership and Quotas

Files are owned by users or groups. Since QuotaAdvisor allows you to manage space by user it is important to be able to change the ownership of files and directories. Windows NT supplies a “Take Ownership” command within Explorer, but you must be logged in as the desired user. This is inconvenient for System Administrators. To overcome this, we provide a SETOWNER utility to permit you to change ownership of files and directories directly. This utility may be executed from the command line or from within Explorer/Properties, if the Snap-in is installed. Full wildcard support is also provided. The command line utility is free of charge and may be downloaded from our WEB site, www.wquinn.com.

When you copy a file, the target file inherits the permission settings for the directory in which it is created. The user who copies the file becomes the new owner of the file, insuring an accurate account of disk space usage by user. The exception to this is if the user is a member of the Administrators group, the Administrators group becomes the owner. To move a file, you need permission to create the files in the target directory and delete files in the source directory. As applied to fi le ownership and protections , move works differently than copy . When you move a file, the file maintains it’s original protections and ownership.

Quotas and the System Partition

Use caution when placing quotas on the system partition. If the system does not have sufficient quota to write files, the system may fail. Also, if the system partition does not have enough space to write temporary files during boot, the system may not restart. This is avoided by using caution when placing quotas on the system partition or system directories. If you wish to keep track of growth on the system partition, you should utilize the “Do not Enforce Quota” option on any quota set on the system partition.

The Desktop

Users may create files and folders “on the desktop”. These files are stored in %systemroot%\Profiles\<username>\Desktop. In order to control disk space utilization on the system partition, you may want to set modest quotas for users on their desktop directories.

The Recycle Bin

Deleting a file through Explorer typically does not delete the file; instead it renames it to the Recycle folder. If the user’s quota is on his own directory, this will relieve his quota. If, however, a user quota is on the root directory of the partition, the used amount may actually increase on deletion. This is because the Recycle bin must store additional information to allow the file to be restored. If a user quota is established on the root directory, then all is well. If, however, you choose to place the user’s quota on his login directory, make sure you also place a quota for that user on the

recycle bin to eliminate the possibility of users storing large amounts of data in the recycle bin to circumvent their quotas.

Rights Identifiers

A right authorizes a user to perform certain actions on the system. When a user does not have appropriate rights, attempts to carry out those actions are blocked. Rights apply to the system as a whole and are different from permissions, which apply to specific objects.

The rights granted to a group are provided to the members of that group. It is usually easier to add a user account to one of the built-in groups that already has the needed rights, than to provide the rights, by administering the User Rights policy.

Security vs. Quotas

Quotas should not be used in place of file security. Quotas should be used only to manage disk space usage, not to prevent a user from writing to a partition or directory. Specifically, if you want to prevent a user from writing to a directory, you should set the protection on that directory appropriately, not give the user a zero quota.

Quota Values and Enforcement

QuotaAdvisor uses the allocation size of files to determine how much space is used. File Manager, Explorer and other NT programs display the actual amount of space occupied by a file. This discrepancy may cause some confusion, but QuotaAdvisor is correctly charging the user for the amount of disk space actually consumed to store a file.

Large cluster sizes on FAT file systems may add to the confusion because an entire cluster is always allocated, regardless of how small the file is. NTFS file systems store very small files in the index file, and typically have more reasonable cluster sizes. Some examples follow:

Because of differences in the amount of storage requested for a file extension operation and the

amount actually allocated by NT for that extension, a user may be allowed to exceed his quota by as much as one cluster. For example, suppose a user has a quota of 100K and has used 96K on a file system with a cluster size of 8K. The user creates a file of 1K and NT requests 1024 bytes of allocation for the file. Since this is less than the remaining quota for the user, the operation is allowed to continue. However, if the cluster size is 8K, NT will actually allocate 8K for the file. The user has now used 104K, and while this was allowed, future attempts to create or extend files will fail.

Renaming and Deleting Files

A quota entry consists of an object name and a user name. These values are maintained in a QuotaAdvisor database. When quota objects are renamed or deleted by the operating system, a message is sent to the QAPolicy service which automatically performs the rename or delete on the QuotaAdvisor databases. This ensures that the file system and QuotaAdvisor objects are in sync. If the management station is active during the rename or delete operation, the tree window is automatically updated.

Users renamed by the Windows NT User Manager will cause the policy information of the quota object to be lost. This includes thresholds and threshold actions. The quota information such as current used, Perm Quota and Overdraft will be maintained.

Users deleted by the Windows NT User Manager are automatically removed from the QuotaAdvisor databases when the next database scan is performed. QAServer validates each user before the information is sent to the client. If the validation is unsuccessful, the quota entry is removed from the QuotaAdvisor databases.

Management Station

The management station, or client, communicates with the server via named pipes. The server assumes the security attributes of the management station user and performs a security check. If the required rights identifier is granted to the user, the request is performed.

QuotaAdvisor offers a “Set Quota” Snap-in in the Enterprise and Cluster versions. It presents a window in Explorer allowing you to add a quota for the selected object(s).

QuotaAdvisor offers a “Set Owner” Snap-in in the Enterprise version. It presents a window in Explorer allowing you to change the owner of the selected object(s). The “Set Owner” dialog displays a lis t of users and groups from the current domain. You may choose alternate domains.

Using QuotaAdvisor 4.1

The QuotaAdvisor Management Station

Use the management station to configure and view the quota objects and definitions. For owners of the Enterprise and Cluster Editions, the management station may be installed on any Windows 95 or Windows NT client. From a central location, you may manage the complete enterprise by connecting to any server and performing remote administration functions. The management station interface is shared by the other members of the StorageCeNTral suite and is presented below.

Connecting to a Server

The first step in creating quotas is to connect to the server. While highlighting objects in the tree view, simply double-click the left mouse button. Once selected, the server will expand to display its’ quota objects and templates.

Creating a Quota Object

To create a quota object(s) you must identify the disk, share, directory or file on which you wish to enforce quota. Once the object(s) is selected, you must decide if you will enforce quota on a user by user basis and/or on a default basis. Finally, you will configure the quota by setting the property

values. This chapter includes step by step examples of creating both default and user quotas. First, you will need some definitions:

What are Quota Objects?

A quota object is any physical portion of a disk. It may be an entire device, a share, a directory or an individual file. An object is created by highlighting the server from the management station, and selecting new from the “File” popdown window. This will take you into the “New Object Window” . You may type your object name into the “Object Name” field or click “Browse” and choose your object(s) from a directory hierarchy.

What are Learn Mode Quotas?

What are Quota Templates?

Quota templates are a mechanism for storing quota property values. Common property values that may be applied to a large number of users and reused several times should be stored in a template. A template may be applied from within the graphical user interface or applied from the command line using the SETQUOTA command.

NOTE: Transparent templates are used to modify only specific properties of an object. A standard template modifies all of the properties of an object. Click on the “Set All Fields To Transparent” option to set all of the template fields to transparent.

What are Absolute Quotas (Formally Default Quotas)?

An “Absolute Quota” is the maximum size of the entire object. For example, if object “C:\” is a 1

giga-byte drive, the absolute quota should be 1000KB or the actual capacity of the drive. Remember; there are several “overhead” uses of space that are not charged to a file or a user. These include such things as “FAT” tables or the root directory structure. It is good practice not to assign up to 100% even for an Absolute Quota. The Absolute Quota concept is useful for monitoring and enforcing disk space usage for an object regardless of users or groups. An Absolute Quota may be established at a drive level as a surveillance technique to measure total disk usage or at a directory level to monitor directory usage.

To create an Absolute quota, from the “New Object” window, Absolute Tab, double-click on the “Quota Object(Absolute)” item. Click “Properties” to configure the quota values.

What are User and Group Quotas?

User and group quotas are basically the same. A quota may be set on an individual user or group. When a user writes a file to an object on which a quota is set for that user, the size of that file is applied to the user’s quota. This is assuming that the user performing the write owns that file once the write is completed. This applies to groups as well. Since the QuotaAdvisor filter driver is looking at file ownership, if a group SID owns a file and quota is set on the group, the size of the file will be applied to the group quota. For more information on group quotas please see the “Types Of Quotas” section in Chapter 3.

To create a user or group quota, from the ”Create Object” window, choose the user or group from the list of users and groups. You may choose more than one user or group at a time. By using the <Control Key> and <Left Mouse Button> simultaneously, you may choose more than one user or group. The <Shift Key> used in conjunction with the <Left Mouse Button> allows you to mark users and groups listed in order. Once a user or group is added to the “Selected Users and Groups” lis t, you may configure its properties.

What is a Perm Quota?

Located on the Properties screen, Perm Quota determines the maximum amount of space the object entry may use. When the Perm Quota is exceeded, the Overdraft quota will be used before allocation failure occurs. All policy actions are based on this value, as are the percent used values in the monitor screen and quota tab values in the Explorer Snap-ins.

What is an Overdraft Quota?

Overdraft quota is a safety factor between the Perm Quota and when an I/O operation returns an error. When the Perm Quota is reached, the Overdraft quota is added to the Perm Quota to determine the new quota. When this is exhausted, no more space is allocated unless the quota flags are set. All policy actions are based on the Perm Quota.

What is Write Through, Complete I/O Regardless of Quota?

When the “Write Through, Complete I/O Regardless of Quota” button is checked, this will allow the first I/O that exceeds quota to complete. For example, JDoe has a 50MB quota and he is currently

at 49MB. He opens a file, adds content to that file which increases the size by 5MB. When he writes that file, he will be at 54MB. Normally, QuotaAdvisor will not allow this write to complete, as it will cause quota to be exceeded. However, when the “Write Through, Complete I/O Regardless of Quota” button is checked, this single I/O will be allowed to complete. Subsequent I/O will be blocked until the over quota condition is remedied.

What is Do Not Enforce Quota, Just Monitor?

By default, QuotaAdvisor will enforce quota. This means that if an I/O will cause quota to be exceeded, QuotaAdvisor will send a message to the I/O manager and the I/O will not be permitted to occur. If the “Do not enforce Quota, just monitor” button is checked, quota on this object will not be enforced. All threshold actions will occur and all monitor screens will be updated, but I/O will be allowed to continue regardless of quota values.

What is Exclude from Absolute Quota?

The “Exclude from Absolute Quota” button is only sensitized when configuring a user or group quota. When checked it will exclude that user or group from any default quota. This means that the space taken up by any files owned by a user that is excluded from default quota, will not count towards the default quota. Likewise, the default quota will not be in effect for that user, hence, it is possible that that user could own file space that exceeds the default quota.

For example, a absolute quota of 500MB may be set on object C:\Temp. You may also have a user quota set on the same object, C:\Temp, for JDoe of “Device Capacity”. This “Device Capacity” quota will allow JDoe to write as much data to C:\Temp as he wants, but only if he is excluded from default quota. Furthermore, the file space the JDoe owns will not be counted toward the default quota.

What is Send Disk Full Error Code?

The “Send Disk Full Error Code” sends the “disk full” error code to the calling application, not the “not enough quota” error code. Windows 95 Clients and other Pre-NT operating systems do not interpret the “not enough quota” error code but will translate the “disk full” error code properly.

What is Quota Replication?

Quota Replication duplicates quota additions and deletions on remote servers. There is no limit to the number of replicated servers. If the quota object may not be created on the replicated server the operation fails and is recorded in the event log.

What are Thresholds?

Thresholds allow you to set a percent of quota value and specify actions to occur when a threshold value is exceeded. QuotaAdvisor allows you to set five threshold values and a different set of actions at each value. Thresholds are exceeded in reverse order so that, of five thresholds, the fifth threshold would be exceeded first. This way the fifth threshold is the least critical and the first

threshold is the most critical.

Generally the first threshold would have a value in the 90% - 100% range. It is not necessary to set a 100% threshold value to enforce quota. QuotaAdvisor will do this regardless of threshold values. Threshold values are based on volume of Perm Quota. When a threshold value is exceeded, a series of actions may occur as specified. These actions include;

• Threshold Message - A message may be configured and mailed to users or sent to the event log.

• Threshold Action - Any valid NT command may be executed. This is most commonly a batch file execution or a ‘net send’.

• Threshold Reports - A series of reports may be generated. These reports address object usage and potential wasted space files. These reports may be mailed or output to an ASCII file, HTML file or comma delimited file.

• Threshold Report Sets - A series of DiskAdvisor reports may be executed from a threshold.. These reports address detailed file information provides by DiskAdvisor, a Storage Resource Reporting System for Windows NT.

Thresholds provide a means to notify users when they are nearing quota and to be proactive in disk space management. More information on thresholds and threshold actions may be found in Chapter 6.

Examples of Creating Quotas:

Adding a Absolute Quota

Follow these steps to add a “Absolute” quota to a quota object:

1. Select the File, New menu item.

2. Enter the object specification. This must be a valid drive, directory or file name. You may also click “Browse” and choose an object from the list.

3. Enable the Absolute quota by selecting the “(Object) Absolute” and clicking on the >> button.

4. Select the “Properties” button.

5. Enter a Perm Quota in the quota tab for the object. If the object specification is a drive, the size of the drive is the default value.

6. Select the desired quota options.

7. Click on the “OK” button.

8. Click on the “Save” button.

Adding a Learn Mode Quota

Follow these steps to add a “Learn Mode” quota to a quota object:

1. Select the File, New menu item.

2. Enter the object specification. This must be a valid drive or directory. You may also click “Browse” and choose an object from the list.

3. Select the “Learn Mode” Tab.

4. Click “AutoDetect Users”.

5. Select a template to apply to all of the detected users on the object.

2. Enter the object specification. This must be a valid drive, directory or file name.

You may pick users from the desired domains. Use the <Shift Key> and left mouse button to select more than one User or Group that appear contiguously, or the <Ctrl Key> and left mouse button if they are not contiguous.

4. Select the “Templates” button.

5. Click “new” and supply a name for your template, then click “OK”.

6. Enter a Perm Quota in the quota tab for the object.

Defining Thresholds

Follow these steps to add a threshold to a quota entry:

1. Select the “File, New” menu item.

2. Enter the quota object specification. This must be a valid drive, directory or file name. For example: “C:\”, “C:\USERS”, “C:\DB\ORACLE.DBS”

3. Select the “(Object) Absolute Tab.

4. Click on a user or default in the selected list.


6. Enter a Perm Quota in the quota tab for the object. If the object specification is a drive, the size of the drive is the default value. You may use templates to apply the same properties to multiple users and groups.


8. Click on the “Threshold1” button.

9. Each threshold tab contains a Threshold Value, Threshold Message, Threshold Action, Threshold Reports and Threshold Report Sets. For testing purposes, compose a test message in the Threshold Message Field. Then, in the Threshold Command dialog, type “net send <your machine name> [MESSAGE]” ( no quotes are necessary). When the threshold is triggered, this will send a popup message to your machine using the syntax of the threshold message you typed. If the message does not appear, check the NT “Event Viewer, Application log” to see if QuotaAdvisor tried to perform a net send.

10. Repeat step 4 until all of the users and groups in the selected list have been defined.

How do I Monitor Quota Usage?

Quota usage may be monitored on an individual object or on the entire server. To monitor quota usage, make sure the object you wish to monitor is displayed on the tree (left) side of QuotaAdvisor screen. If it is not, the “Monitor, Start” window item will not be sensitized. When highlighting the object, select “Monitor, Start” from the menu bar.

The monitor displays the quota entries of the highlighted object or server. Each row contains a quota entry record and displays the object name, user, percent of quota used, current quota used, high-water mark, Perm Quota and Overdraft. The data on this display is updated based on the “Monitor, Frequency”.

You may monitor multiple quota objects simultaneously by opening a new monitor session for each one you wish to monitor. Each monitor session may be paused, released or canceled. The quota entry is modified by “Double Clicking” on the desired item which will take you into the “Properties” for that entry. The “% Used” field displays a color coded percent bar based on the current threshold settings.

Quota Reporting

Reports are available on quota objects by object name and user name. These reports are only available from the tree view. The contents of each report is determined by the current selection in the tree view. By selecting the root of the tree, the report will reflect all of the quota objects defined on the server. By selecting a single quota object, the report will reflect the quota object only. The usage report is displayed below.

What is a Scan?

When you initially create and save a quota object, the object is scanned and usage information about that object is stored in the QuotaAdvisor database. Though it should not be necessary, you may rescan a highlighted object at any time to update the database. Rescanning does not delete and recreate the object, it just calculates and updates the current space allocation.

How Do I Push Install a Servers?

Push install allows you to install QuotaAdvisor on remote machines from a centralized management station without intervention. Follow the steps below to install a QuotaAdvisor or DiskWatcher server.

1) Highlight the system in the Tree Window where the server is to be installed.

2) Select <File Menu>, <Install Server>

3) An Installation Wizard is displayed. Click Next.

4) Select the server type to install.

5) Enter the product serial number. It is attached to your distribution. If you have problems

locating the serial number, please contact your reseller. See the Figure above.

6) Click Next.

7) Click “Restart systems if necessary.”

8) Click “Scan all drives automatically.” When the server is installed a quota object is created for each of your drives. The object properties are based on the “Device Capacity’ template and may be changed and applied after the scan is complete. Please see the Figure below.

QuotaAdvisor Command Reference Guide

File Menu

New Command (File Menu)

Creates a new quota object. A quota object consists of an object specification and multiple user and/or group quota entries. The object specification may be a disk partition, share, directory or file. The user and group definition may be any valid user or group defined on the system. There is no programmatic limit to the number of quota entries you may specify. An object scan is performed after you save the quota object. This scan updates the current usage information of the object.

The “Absolute Quotas” Tab contains the object capacity quota definition.

The “Learn Mode” Tab contains a learn mode object definition.

The “User Quotas” Tab contains the selected machine, domain or trusted domain. By default, the current system is presented and contains an “*” after the name. The selection window contains all the users and local groups for that system. The “…” button presents a list of domains and trusted domains for the current user. When you select a domain, all the users and global groups in the domain are displayed in the selection window. User and global groups selected from a domain will contain the domain name in the path, “QUINN\Domain Admin”.

Selecting Quota Objects

Use “…” to select a quota object. The object may be a disk, share, directory or file. Click on the “+” to expand the directory tree. Click on the “-“ to shrink the directory tree. “Double Click ” to select the highlighted item. Use the “Add” button to select the object or objects to place quotas on. There is no limit to the number of objects you may select. Use “Shift Click” to mark multiple objects. The

“Add Branch” button will add the all the subdirectories of the highlighted folder. The folder must be expanded.

Use this dialog for selecting a domain, domain controller or current system. If an NT system is entered, the name must be preceded by “\\”. For example, \\NTSYSTEM1. The system must be the local system or a domain controller of the primary or trusted domain. If you select a domain, the domain must be the current domain or a domain trusted by the current domain.

Delete Command (File Menu)

Deletes the highlighted quota object. From the tree view, the object specification and all of the quota entries are deleted. From the quota view, the currently highlighted quota entry is deleted. Deletion will cause all quota enforcement and monitoring to be terminated for this object.

Properties Command (File Menu)

Displays the properties for the current object. If the object is a quota object, the Quota Properties window is displayed. If the object is a machine, the Server Properties window is displayed. If the object is a template, the Template Properties window is displayed.

Quota Properties

The quota definition contains the Perm and Overdraft quota. The Perm Quota determines the maximum amount of space the object entry may use. When the Perm Quota is exceeded, Overdraft quota will be used before allocation failure occurs. When this is exhausted, no more space is allocated unless the appropriate quota options are set. All threshold actions are based on the Perm Quota, as are all monitor percentages.

Quota Options

Use the following options to control the quota management:

“Send Disk Full Error Code” - sends the “disk full” error code to the calling application, not the “not enough quota” error code. Pre-NT operating systems such as Windows 95 do not interpret the “not enough quota” error code but do interpret the “disk full” error code properly.

Note: The “Device Capacity” button sets the Perm Quota field with the total number of bytes available on the drive.

Threshold Value

The Trigger Value is the percentage of Perm Quota used. The thresholds are processed starting with threshold 1. You should specify the highest threshold first, followed by lower thresholds. For example, threshold value 1; 100%, threshold value 2; 90%, threshold value 3; 80% and so on… If the current quota exceeds any of the 5 thresholds, the corresponding quota actions are executed. Thresholds that trigger numerous times within a few seconds are discarded.

It may be useful to be notified if a threshold drops below the trigger value. If the “Trigger Below” option is set the corresponding quota actions are executed when the current used drops below the threshold value.

NOTE:

A threshold is only triggered once until the % used space drops below the threshold. For example, if threshold 3 is 70% and threshold 2 is 80% and the quota is 71%, threshold 3 is triggered. Threshold 3 won’t be triggered again, unless the value first drops below 70%. Threshold 2 will be triggered if more files are saved and the value raises above 80%.

Threshold Messages

This is the message to send, if the threshold value is reached. You may specify the following message macros within the message for customized output.

The message may be sent via mail to a set of users and to the Windows NT event log. The severity of the message is either “Severe”, “Warning” or “Informational”. Mail Command

Use the mail command to send threshold messages or reports to a set of users. This mail interface supports recipients defined on a Microsoft Exchange mail server or Internet mail server.

Profiles are the configuration definitions used by the mail system to send and receive mail. These profiles are defined in the “Control Panel, Mail Window”. The QAPolicy service must have a profile associated with the account that the QAPolicy service is running under.

On the QuotaAdvisor client side, the profile is used to obtain the recipient list. On the server side, it is used to send mail. This profile must exist on both the QuotaAdvisor client and server.

Use the “Mail Dialog” to specify a profile, a recipient list and subject. The “…” is used to present the “Address Book”. The [USER NO DOMAIN] macro is available for use in the “MAIL TO” field. This macro will substitutes the current user name as the “MAIL TO” user.

Threshold Command Action

The actions to perform when a threshold value is exceeded. These actions are:

Execute the command defined in the ”Command to Execute” field. This command may be any valid function that may be performed from a DOS box. You may pass the converted threshold message and user name to a batch file by using the [MESSAGE] and [USER] macros. Some examples follow.

Examples: MYBATCHFILE [MESSAGE] [USER] Executes the batch file, passing the QuotaAdvisor message and user that triggered the message to the batch file as parameters. MYAPPLICATION [USER NO QUOTES] [MESSAGE NO QUOTES] Executes the application, passing the QuotaAdvisor message and user that triggered the message to the batch file as parameters. Auto-Adjust

Use Auto-Adjust to automatically increase a quota when the threshold is reached. The “Repeat” value limits the number of adjustments. For example, if a quota is set with a Auto-Adjust of 5MB and a repeat value of 2, the quota will increase a maximum of 10MB.

Threshold Reports - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

Use threshold reports to generate storage management reports on potential wasted space, usage and object summary information when a threshold is reached. The output directory of the report is specified and that directory must be accessible from the server. The output directory must have permission to create files in the output directory. If sufficient privilege is not granted, the reports will not be created or mailed.

The reports are generated on the server. The reports may be formatted as text, HTML and comma delimited strings. The report is mailed if the mail option is selected. The same mail definition is used for mailing messages and reports. All report file names include the report type and the object name. For Example: OWNER_USAGE_C.HTML - OWNER_USAGE is the report type and C is the object name.

AGED_FILES_DuserDir.HTML - AGED_FILES is the report type and D:\userDir is the object name.

Aged Files - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

Aged files are files that have not been revised for a year or more and may occupy a significant percentage (as much as 25%-30%) of the object. The aged file report displays the number of days since the file was modified, the file name and the directory. The value for the aged date is 365 days prior to the current date. The report is sorted by revision date, ascending. Files in this report may have been accessed but not modified. The report is sorted by file age.

Directory Usage - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

The directory usage report displays directory statistics such as total files, total size and number of directories for each directory. This is useful for determining directory contents and status. The report is sorted by directory name.

Duplicate Files - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

Duplicate files may consume large amounts of space and may be recovered by giving users system wide access to a single copy of the duplicate file. The duplicate file report shows duplicate files across directories. A duplicate is a file with the same name and same size.

Large Files - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

The quickest way to free up space is by deleting, compressing and/or archiving the largest files. The large file report displays all the files larger than 2MB. The file size, file owner, file name and directory name are displayed. The report is sorted by size.

Last Accessed Files - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

The last access report identifies the files that have not been used actively for 30 days. Its format is the same as the aged files report except that both read and write operations are recognized.

New Files - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

New files are files that have been created within the last 24 hours. This might include temporary files, log files, work files, runaway files, scratch files, etc. If a disk suddenly fills up, this is a good report to run since often the offending culprit is a new file. The new file report displays the number of days since the file was created, the file name, file owner and the directory where it resides. The value of the new date is 1 day prior to the current date. A different day value may be specified. The report is sorted by creation date, ascending.

Summary - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

The full summary report contains a detailed statistical analysis of the disk object’s contents.

Usage By Owner - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

The usage by owner report displays how much space each user is consuming. This report displays the total number of bytes used, the total number of files, the total number of directories, the largest file and the user name. The report is sorted in user sequence. File ownership controls which files are used by which users.

Output Directory Options - Enterprise and Cluster Editions Only

The QuotaAdvisor reports are placed in the output directory specified in the “Output Directory” field. The directory may be hard coded or dynamically created using the [USER] and [USER NO DOMAIN] macros. These macros are defined below:

• [USER]

This macro will replace the [USER] with the current user name including the domain where the user is defined. Some examples are below: A Output Directory definition of [USER] will produce the following directory path, <QuotaAdvisor Install Directory>\Output\Domain1\Administrator, where Administrator is the current user and “Domain1” is the domain where Administrator is defined. Report Sets may be scheduled to run in the future. The scheduled time is relative to when the tthreshold is activated. For example, if the Report Set is predefined to run at 5:30am and the threshold is triggered at 12:00pm, the Report Set is will hold until 5:30am the next day.

Use this Tab to control the QuotaAdvisor services; QAServer and QAPolicy. You may start, stop and toggle the auditing options from this window.

Mail

Use Mail to configure the Exchange profile and SMTP mail settings. QuotaAdvisor supports two type of mail services; Exchange Profiles and direct access to an SMTP server.

Exchange Profiles: Use the profile settings to define how QuotaAdvisor will send mail. This profile must be defined on the server and must be associated with the account used by the QAPolicy service. SMTP Server Address and Send Address: Use the SMTP settings to define the address of the SMTP server. QuotaAdvisor will use the SMTP server when Internet mail addresses are specified. The Sender address is placed in the From: field of the mail message.

Template Properties

Use Template properties to modify template values.

User or Group Association

Templates may be associated with a user or group identifier. The identifier is selected from a list of known users and groups for a particular domain or trusted domain. The identifier is checked when new users are learned. The learned quota object is assigned the template with a matching identifier. If the learned quota object belongs to a group, all templates on the local machine are searched for a group association. If the learned quota object belongs to a user, all templates on the local machine are searched for a user association.

Transparent Templates

Transparent templates are used to modify only specific properties of an object. A standard template modifies all of the properties of an object.

Scan Command (File Menu)

Scans the object and recalculates the current usage for the current object. This is useful when a new version of QuotaAdvisor has been installed and the scanning algorithm has been altered.

Setup

Displays a print Setup dialog box, so you may select a printer and printer connection.

Print Range

Specify the pages you want to print:

All Prints the entire document.

Selection Prints the currently selected text.

Pages Prints the range of pages you specify in the From and To boxes.

Copies

Specify the number of copies you want to print for the above page range.

Collate Copies

Prints copies in page number order, instead of separated multiple copies of each page.

Print Quality

Select the quality of the printing. Generally, lower quality printing takes less time to produce.

Print Progress Dialog

The printing dialog box is shown during the time that QuotaAdvisor is sending output to the printer. The page number indicates the progress of the printing.

To abort printing, choose “Cancel”.

Save As Command (File Menu)

Saves the current report to a file that you may define.

Exit command (File Menu)

Exits the QuotaAdvisor management station.

Server Menu

Connect (Server Menu)

The first step in creating quotas is to connect to the server. While highlighting a system in the tree view, simply double-click the left mouse button. Once selected, the server will expand to display its’ quota objects and templates.

Disconnect (Server Menu)

While highlighting a system in the tree view, select <Server Menu>, Disconnect. This will stop all communication between the Management Station and the server.

Install (Server Menu)

Push install allows you to install QuotaAdvisor or DiskWatcher on remote machines from a centralized management station without intervention. Please see “How Do I Push Install a Servers” in Chapter 4.for more details.

De-install (Server Menu)

De-install removes a QuotaAdvisor or DiskWatcher server from a system. The wizard guides you through the de-install process.

Replication (Server Menu)

Quota Replication duplicates quota creations and deletions on remote servers. There is no limit to the number of replicated servers. If the quota object can’t be created on the replicated server the operation fails and is recorded in the event log.

Confirm Delete (Options Menu)

Confirms the deletion of a quota object and quota entry. Answer “Yes” in the dialog to complete the deletion. This is the default operation.

Connect Locally (Options Menu)

Use this option to connect to the local machine when QuotaAdvisor is started. The default is enabled.

Show NT Systems Only (Options Menu)

Use this option to show the Windows NT system only in the Tree View. The default is disabled.

Monitor (Options Menu)

• Auto Start Use Auto Start Monitor to display the monitor automatically when you create a quota object.

• Relate Objects Use Monitor Relate Objects to monitor all objects within the same directory tree. For example, if you select C:\Users, all objects contained within C:\Users are monitored.

• Frequency Use Frequency to adjust the monitor refresh rate in seconds. The change will take effect immediately for any current monitor sessions. This value is in seconds.

View Menu

DiskAdvisor ( View Menu)

Use this command to open the DiskAdvisor view.

Schedules ( View Menu)

Use this command to open the Schedules view. This view contains the scheduled Report Sets for the machine you select.

Status Bar Command (View Menu)

Use this command to display and hide the status bar, which describes the action to be executed by the selected menu item, depressed toolbar button and keyboard latch state. A check mark appears next to the menu item enabled when the status bar is displayed.

Toolbar Command (View Menu)

Use this command to display or hide the toolbar, which includes buttons for some of the most common commands of QuotaAdvisor, such as New. A check mark appears next to the menu item that is enabled when the toolbar is displayed.

Reports Menu

Usage by Object command (Reports Menu)

Generates a report containing all of the quota entries within the highlighted quota object. If the highlighted quota object is the root of the tree, all of the object entries for all of the quota objects are included. This report is sorted by object name.

Status Bar

The status bar is displayed at the bottom of the QuotaAdvisor window. To display or hide the status bar, use the Status Bar command in the View menu.

The left area of the status bar describes the state of actions of menu items. You use the arrow keys to navigate through the menus. This area also shows messages that describe the actions of toolbar buttons as you depress them, before releasing them. If after viewing the description of the toolbar button command, you wish not to execute the command, then release the mouse button while the pointer is off the toolbar button.

The right area of the status bar indicates which of the following keys are latched down:

“...” Command (Window Menu)

QuotaAdvisor displays a list of currently open document windows at the bottom of the Window menu. A check mark appears in front of the document name of the active window. Choose a document from this list to make its window active.

Title Bar

The title bar is located along the top of a window. It contains the name of the application and document.

To move the window, drag the title bar. Note: You may also move dialog boxes by dragging their title bars.

After the pointer changes to the four-headed arrow:

4. Press ENTER when the window is the size you want. Note: This command is unavailable if you maximize the window.

Performance Analysis

Summary

This document discusses tests that were performed to determine the overhead imposed by the QAFilter driver on the performance of Windows NT/2000 file system I/O. QAFilter is a component of the QuotaAdvisor product, which implements file owner based disk space quotas for Windows NT. The purpose of QAFilter is to intercept all file system I/O, determine if a particular I/O will affect disk space allocation, and if so, take appropriate actions. These actions may include persistently storing the new file allocation and notifying the QuotaAdvisor server process of the event or failing the I/O request.

Method

The program we used to measure the performance of QAFilter uses Win32 System Service file system calls to test the operation of several file system features. Each operation type is measured separately, using the GetTickCount system service, which returns a variation of the current time in milliseconds. Operation repeat counts were chosen to balance total run time of the tests, accuracy of the results and appropriateness of the mix of operations.

The tests measured are:

Create: Creates a directory tree 4 levels deep with 4 directories in each directory at each level. Creates 20 empty files in each directory at each level. The result is 4 + 4**2 + 4**3 + 4**4 = 340 directories, containing 340 * 20 = 6800 files.

Open: Opens for read and immediately closes the 6800 files previously created. An implicit directory search is included.

Overwrite: Opens for write access and truncates the 6800 files previously created. An implicit directory search is included.

SeqWrite: Writes 1000 1k records sequentially at end-of-file to each of 6800 of the previously created files. An implicit directory search is included. The file is opened for sequential access optimization.

SeqRead: Reads each of the 1000 files written in the SeqWrite test sequentially from beginning of file to end-of-file, in 1k increments. An implicit directory search is included. The file is opened for sequential access optimization.

RandWrite: Writes 1000 1k records to random locations in each of the 6800 files which were written in the SeqWrite test. Each write operation picks a random file pointer offset which is a multiple of 1k, and is between 0 and 1.01 times the current file size. Some writes will cause file extensions. An implicit directory search is included. The file is opened for random access

optimization.

RandRead: Reads 1000 1k records from random locations in each of the 6800 files used in the RandWrite test. Each read operation picks a random file pointer offset that is a multiple of 1k, and is between 0 and the file size minus 1k. An implicit directory search is included. The file is opened for random access optimization.

Delete: All the files and directories used in the tests are deleted. An implicit directory search is included.

Two systems were used to run the test:

Intel: 75 MHz Pentium with 32 MB memory and a 1 GB IDE drive on the on-board IDE controller. The disk drive is a master on the 2nd IDE bus. The system partition is on another drive on the other IDE bus. The partition used for the test is NTFS, 313 MB, with a cluster size of 512. The system is running Windows NT Server V4.10, Service Pack 2.

Alpha: 166 MHz Digital Alpha with 40 MB memory and a 1 GB SCSI drive on the on-board SCSI adapter. The system partition is on the same disk drive as the test partition. The partition used for the test is NTFS, 95 MB, with a cluster size of 512. The system is running Windows NT Workstation V4.10, with no service packs installed.

The test program was run three times on each system with QAFilter, and three times without QAFilter. Before each run, the configuration was initialized, i.e. the test partition was formatted to ensure an identical initial state, and if QAFilter was installed, one absolute quota and one user quota were placed on the test partition. There was no other system activity at the time of the test.

The results for each set of 3 test runs were averaged to determine an elapsed time for each test. The average times for the tests without QAFilter were divided by the average times with QAFilter to establish a performance ratio for each test. Then the geometric mean of the performance ratios for all 8 tests was calculated to produce the “marketing performance ratio.”

It is important to note what these tests show, as well as what they don’t. These tests show elapsed (wall clock) time for a variety of file system operations. They indicate how much longer a user will have to wait for a file system I/O request to complete when QAFilter is on the system. As such, they indicate a “worst case” performance degradation, i.e. if an application is entirely I/O-bound, it will experience the delays indicated by the tests. CPU-bound applications are not likely to see any performance degradation, and balanced “real-world” applications will see a portion of the degradation based on their profile; the more I/O intensive an application is, the more performance degradation it will experience, theoretically limited by the results of these tests. The tests specifically do not measure the effect of QAFilter on overall system performance. QAFilter acts only in response to user requests, and does not consume resources independently, so such a measurement makes no sense. Furthermore, the tests do not measure total application performance degradation; real applications are not entirely I/O bound, and will only see a fraction of the performance degradation described here. Given the numbers in the next section however, it should be possible to calculate the performance degradation for a given application if its profile is known.

The ratios indicate the time difference between I/O operations with QAFilter and without. For example, on an Intel machine, a create request without QAFilter present will complete in 0.952 or 95% of the time the same operation takes with QAFilter present; in other words, there is a 5% (1-1/0.952) performance penalty associated with QAFilter for this operation. Another example, on an Intel machine, a Random read request without QAFilter present will complete in 0.996 or 98.7% of the time the same operation takes with QAFilter present; in other words, there is a 1.3% (1-1/0.987) performance penalty associated with QAFilter for this operation.

The final calculation, the geometric mean, has some value as a general indication of I/O performance degradation. The actual degradation, however, will depend on the application’s mix of I/O operations.

There is one apparent anomaly in the results. There are a few cases where the average elapsed time with QAFilter is lower than the elapsed time without. This seems counterintuitive, since QAFilter has some involvement in every I/O operation, if only to pass it on, taking no action. The only reasonable explanation for this is that the performance degradation for those cases is less than the natural variance of elapsed times for the operations in question. The impact in those cases is so slight that it may be safely ignored.

Conclusion

It is estimated that QAFilter adds about 1-2% overhead to the overall system. From the results stated above, QAFilter adds about 5% to the elapsed time required to perform file I/O. Remember, file system I/O is only a portion on the total system overhead. The effect this will have on users depends on the profile of the application. Applications that are I/O-bound and frequently open or delete files will see a file system I/O degradation approaching the worst case of 5%. Applications which are CPU-bound, or read and write files which are constantly open will not notice any performance degradation.

QuotaAdvisor Manual Supplement Purpose: The purpose of this document is to act as a getting started manual and to address several Frequently Asked Questions. It is strongly suggested that you take a few minutes to read it over as in the end it will save you time. It covers the following areas: Product Overview Installation Getting Started Creating Quotas For additional FAQ’s please go to http://support.wquinn.com. Product Design Overview: QuotaAdvisor has 4 key components. They are:

1) The GUI or Management Station: The Management Station is a client application that can be installed on NT 4.0 Server or Workstation, Windows 95 or Windows 98. It can be used to connect to and manage multiple QuotaAdvisor Servers. The QA 4.0 Management station can manage QuotaAdvisor 2.1 Servers as well. The physical file name is SCMGR.exe. A second executable exists for running the QuotaAdvisor Monitor only. This application is QAMGR.exe 2) The QAServer Service: The QAServer Service is the NT Service that communicates directly to the QuotaAdvisor I/O Filter Driver. This Service can be run as under a User Account (Service Account) or as the System Account. The Management Station (Client) connects to this Service in order to create and modify quotas. If this Service is not running, there is no means to create or modify quotas. Existing Quotas, however, will still be enforced without this Service running. 3) The QAPolicy Service: The QAPolicy Service is the NT Service that executes the Threshold Actions set on a Quota Object. QuotaAdvisor allows for several actions to be taken when any of five potential thresholds are exceeded on a quota. The QuotaAdvisor I/O Filter Driver notifies QAPolicy that a particular threshold has been exceeded and QAPolicy executes the predefined actions. QAPolicy Service can be run as under a User Account (Service Account) or as the System Account. Keep in mind, that this account may need appropriate privileges and permissions to take the appropriate action, such as writing to the event log or writing a report to a specified output directory. When integrating with exchange mail, or non-SMTP mail, using mail profiles, the Service specified needs to have an associated mail profile on the Server. This mail profile needs to be specified in the mail setup of QuotaAdvisor. 4) The QuotaAdvisor I/O Filter Driver: This is the engine of QuotaAdvisor that enforces quotas. The I/O Filter Driver is loaded into memory upon install (or reboot) and filters I/O for purposes of quota enforcement. This file is physically located in {system root}\winnt\system32\drivers\qafilter.sys. You can also manage this I/O Filter Driver (QAFilter) from the Control Panel/Devices applet. Disabling this device, or renaming or deleting the physical file will keep the I/O Filter Driver from loading at boot. In order to remove this file from memory, the device must be disabled, or the file renamed, and a reboot is required.

Installation:

QuotaAdvisor has 4 separate, but similar installations depending upon demo or production version installation, CD or download installation:

1) Demo Installation: Does not require a key. A 30-day key is supplied. This key can be extended at the discretion of W. Quinn Associates. To obtain a demo extension, run the \Program Files\StorageCentral\4.0\bin\license executable. Note the registration number, and email that to [email protected], requesting a demo extension. DO NOT reinstall the demo on the same Server. This will not provide a new key and is likely to inhibit the issuance of an extension key. 2) Production Installation: Requires a Serial Number, which is included with the CD distribution shipped upon receipt of a valid order. The Production version can be installed over top of the demo version without de-installing the demo version. The QA manual states otherwise. This is because an upgrade from 2.1 to 4.0 required a de-install of 2.1. This document assumes the demo was of QA 4.0. If you do decide to de-install the demo, it will not delete the quotas, assuming you respond to de-install questions properly. However, a de-install will cause Templates to be lost, as they are stored in the registry. 3) Install from Download file: A download of the demo version or the production version is in self-extracting zip formatting. When executed, the setup files will extract into the C:\Temp directory. The setup script will automatically execute and prompt you for required information. 4) Install from CD: The CD Install uses an auto-run feature that kicks off Internet Explorer to guide you through install. If you are not running the appropriate version of Internet Explorer, this may pose a small problem. Not to fear! The work-around is to browse the CD and run the appropriate setup application. The CD is organized into directories named for the Quinn product. Required Install information: The install has all the typical prompts for acceptance of the license and all the other stuff you don’t read and click through. The only important prompts are the following: Username/Password:

This is simply asking for account information under which to run the QuotaAdvisor Services – QAServer and QAPolicy. It defaults to the Administrator account, however, you can choose any account with a valid password. If you click next without supplying a password, the install will inform you that it will run the Services under the System Account. This is fine, however, if you wish to integrate with Exchange mail, rather than SMTP mail, this won’t work, because the account, under which the QAPolicy Service is running, must have an associated Exchange Profile, and the System account does not. Mail Setup: QuotaAdvisor supports both Exchange mail and SMTP mail. The Exchange mail information is located near the top of the Mail setup screen during installation. For exchange mail, you need to specify the Profile that is associated with the User account

under which the QAPolicy service is running. No password is required. The password may be necessary for NT 3.5-1 mail. For SMPT mail, simply specify the name or IP address of your SMTP Server and the Sender Address is any SMTP address. This is necessary so when a user is emailed an alert, he can see who it is sent from and reply to it. You may consider creating a mail account called Quota@{company_name}.com.

Is a Reboot Required? A reboot is required if you are upgrading from a previous version or Build of QuotaAdvisor and are updating the I/O Filter driver. If you are installing the production version over top the demo version and the Build numbers are the same, a reboot is not required because there is no change in the existing QuotaAdvisor I/O filter driver already on your system. The install will prompt for a reboot if it sees that you are installing a newer I/O filter driver. If this is a fresh install of either the demo version or production version, a reboot is not necessary but is suggested. We utilize the technology of dynamically loading the I/O filter driver into memory, but when this is done, we have no choice but to load on top of the stack. This may pose a problem if you are running other I/O filter drivers, especially undelete. QuotaAdvisor may not see deletes if this is the case. A reboot ensures that all I/O filter drivers are loaded in the preferred order.

Installing the Management Station only: You can load the Management Station module on any Windows 95/98 machine or any Windows NT 4.0 machine. The install is basically the same as a full install, but on the install screen that gives you the option of Express or Custom, choose Custom. The next screen will display the products that are being installed. Highlight the appropriate product, in this case QuotaAdvisor, and click the Change button. This will display the modules. Uncheck the Server Modules and the Management Station, Command Line Utilities and Explorer Snapins will be installed. Although the install script requires a Serial Number to install any portion of QuotaAdvisor, these modules are not counted against your license agreement and are free of charge. Alpha Install and 3.5-1 Installs: QuotaAdvisor does support the Alpha platform and NT 3.5-1. However, they are supported as Server modules only. This means that the Management Station can not be loaded on Alpha or 3.5-1 machine. You can however, load the Management Station on a x86, Window 95/98 or NT 4.0 machine and connect to the Server modules running on Alpha or 3.5-1 for management of quotas on those machines.

Getting Started Creating Quotas: There are two types of Quotas, User quotas and Absolute quotas.

User Quota: A User Quota is set on individual User SID, that limits the amount of space that user can own in the Object. File ownership is key here. As a rule, when a user creates a file, that user owns the file, unless that user is a member of the Administrators Group, then, the file is owned by the Group SID Administrators and not the individual user SID. Absolute Quota: An Absolute Quota limits the size of the Object regardless of who writes to the Object or who owns files in the Object. You can think of them as directory quota s.

A Practical Application: Most customers are concerned with the size and growth of user home directories on the Server. QuotaAdvisor 4.0 provides an easy way for setting quotas on user home directories. This would be the Directory Learn Mode. Create a Template with all the appropriate settings. (IMPORTANT: See Note Below). Remember, if you choose to enforce the quota and set a quota value of 20MB, some users home directories may already be larger than 20MB, hence, I/O to those directories would be stopped. You do have the option of setting quota to be a percentage of current usage, such as 110%. After creating your Template, create a new Object, which would be the Root of the User Home directories, for example D:\Home. Then click the tab for Learn Mode and select the options for Directory Learn Mode, specifying to apply the template you have created. When you save this Quota, all the existing user home directories will get the quota specified in the Template, and any future directory created under D:\Home will automatically be applied the same quota. If you wish to modify any of the newly created quotas, you can do so, without affecting the others. User Learn Mode works in a similar fashion, except when a user quota is applied, it is applied to a user SID and is based on file ownership. As a rule, you should exclude Administrators from User Learn Mode. If you don’t, the Administrators Group SID will receive a quota. When members of the Administrators Group write a file, the file is owned by the Group SID Administrators, and not the individual user. If you do not exclude Administrators from User Learn Mode Quota, your administrators may have problems writing to disk. User Quotas are most useful on Public areas where there are no write restrictions. User Quotas on such a share will allow you to limit how much an individual user can own in that share. You can also use a combination of Absolute Quotas and User Quotas. An Absolute Quota of 500MB can be set on the D:\Public directory limiting its overall size. Individual User Quotas can also be set on D:\Public limiting each user to 10MB. Note: When creating or modifying a Template, DO NOT check the boxes next to the Permanent Quota field. When checked, this field is grayed out and set to transparent. When a field is grayed out it is sent to transparent and that field will be ignored when the Template is applied. Transparent Templates are very useful, but have been a source of confusion. If you are creating quota objects using a template and the quota doesn’t seem to get applied, check the Template and ensure the fields are not grayed out and set to transparent.
