LAHC CSU GE Area F Ethnic Studies Action Plan 10/28/20
The CSU is in the process of creating a new Area for Ethnic Studies to its General Education plan. This is still under development and information is still forthcoming. In response to what we know at this time, the following recommendations have been developed by the Curriculum Chair in consultation with the Articulation Officer, Dean of Curriculum and faculty members in relevant areas. Many of the recommendations have been adapted from recommendations put forth at District Curriculum.
1. Immediate action plan to have Area F courses available for students in Fall 2021:a. It is possible to meet the Area F with courses cross-listed in courses Ethnic Studies subjects.
It is not necessary to offer both ends of the cross-list. LAHC currently offers 3 such courses.Faculty need to revise the Course Outline of Record as needed to address specific contentrequirements for Area F. This should be done by mid-November for consideration at theDecember Curriculum Committee meeting, subsequent Academic Senate approval, andsubmission to Assist for the February 2021 deadline.
B HISTORY 041 = AFRO AM 004 B HISTORY 042 = AFRO AM 005 B SPANISH 012 = CHICANO 042
b. District does not currently have a subject for Native American Studies, one of the fourspecifically named categories of Area F. Creating a new subject is a lengthy process thatshould begin asap.
i. Faculty have already requested creation of the new subject (NATIVE AM) forconsideration at the November Curriculum Committee meeting and subsequentAcademic Senate.
ii. Issue goes to the December meeting of the District Curriculum Committee.iii. District Academic Senate assigns minimum qualifications (likely those for “Ethnic
Studies”).iv. The AFT and District negotiate the workload (likely 15 hours, in alignment with other
Ethnic Studies subjects).
2. Short-term Action to have courses ready for Fall 2022:a. Adopt other already approved cross-listed courses, if desired:
B SPANISH 016 = CHICANO 044 B SPANISH 046 = CHICANO 037
b. Cross-list new courses, if desired. Requires notice to other campuses:B ANTHRO 132 = NAT AM ? B ENGLISH 219 = ? B ENGLISH 234 = AFRO AM 020 B ENGLISH 265 = ASIAN ? B HISTORY 043 = CHICANO 007 B HISTORY 044 = CHICANO 008 B HISTORY 058 = ASIAN 001
3. Long-term action plan to further broaden offerings in the four ethnic studies areas:a. Consider adoption of the AFRO AM, ASIAN, CHICANO and NAT AM subjects and courses.b. Create or adopt courses in other subjects as needed.
