Speak with the daycare to find out if they will use cloth and if they dowhich types, pockets are more absorbent and keep the baby feeling dry soprobably better in a situation where changes are less frequent. Will your outings with your baby be to visit friends and family orrestaurants and shopping malls? If it's restaurants and malls you mightwant to use pockets because they are more absorbent and baby can golonger between changes. Which type does your partner like? What features are important tothem? Do the checklist below with your partner to find out if you are on thesame page with diapering priorities.

Making Sense of The Checklist Which color or colors worked with your budget? If your max budget is $200 then it's going to be flats or prefolds, unless youcan find used diapers in a type better suited to your needs.

Adding Up Your Colors Below the Line

I had ____ out of 4 - Flats I had ____ out of 5 - Prefold I had ____ out of 8 - BB/Boobles Bottoms I had ____ out of 7 - Fitted I had ____ out of 7 - Pocket I had ____ out of 7 - All In One

Did you have any that matched 100%?

Of those 100% matches (or highest score) did any match your budget?

You likely have your type figured out already, if not I want you to list thefollowing in order of importance to you, from most important to least important: Easy to put on (BB's, fitted, prefold, AIO)), Easiest to wash and fastest to dry (flats, prefolds, BB's & fitted), Absorbency and leak protection (pocket & AIO), Trim fittingone size (BB's), Easier early potty training (flats, prefolds, BB's & fitted), mostbabysitter and daycare friendly (pockets & AIO), cutest diapers (pocket & AIO), Strongwarranty and money back guarantee (BB's, some sites offer 30 day guarantee onpocket & AIO's)

Note: by adding microfiber inserts and using wrap style diaper covers, flats, prefolds andBB's can be made as absorbent as a pocket and the cover will provide the same leakprotection. These are rarely necessary with these types but if the problem arises thereare solutions.

Buying and Budgeting Now that you know YES you definitely want to use cloth diapers on your baby and youhave figured out the type of cloth diapers that will best meet your needs it is time todecide when and where to buy.

When - You want to have your diapers purchased, washed and ready in the change-table before your baby is born. A very safe bet is to buy them a month or two beforeyour baby arrives. However, if there is a 30 day money back guarantee or in the caseof BB's a 60 day money back guarantee you will want to maximize the amount of timeyou can use the diapers in that guarantee window, ordering a week or two before yourdue date might be a better way to go.

Write down the date you want to purchase your cloth diapers by

Where - It has been my experience that while it is awesome to support local shopsand diaper boutiques you will get a better deal and selection online. If you havedecided that pockets are the diaper for you, you can get the Chinese made ones muchcheaper than North American made, I think the North American made are betterquality, the people who make them work in MUCH better conditions and are paidminimum wage or higher. I think it's a shame that we don't manufacture much inCanada and The United States anymore because the majority of us want as much aswe can get for as little as possible; however cloth diaper users often don't fit in with themajority and see the importance in supporting the North American cloth diaperindustry. If you see pocket diapers for less than $13 each they are made in China.

Budgeting - A great way to save enough money for the initial investment in clothdiapers is by purchasing used items online or in second hand stores. Baby items areparticularly popular on sites like Craigslist and Kijiji, you can get amazing deals oneverything from toys and clothes to furniture, playpens and high chairs. Or anothergreat way is to simply set aside $60-$80 a month (a little more than you would spendon disposables) and in a few months you will have enough or close to enough. Youcan also ask for money for your baby shower to purchase cloth diapers with. It's notvery sentimental but a great money saving strategy would be to get money fromeveryone and use it to buy diapers and with any leftover money buy other baby itemssecond hand.
