In the animal kingdom, XY is a Y that lives independently rather than with others as a member of a pack.

In literature, XY’s are aloof and emotionally unable or unwilling to directly interact with other characters in the story.

In military or security groups, XY’s frequently act on their own accord, insist on working alone, refuse to work with most of the members of a group and go against the plans of missions and attempt to complete a task alone.

They are a weekly event and have an advertised start time, most often in the evening. XY was developed in the late 1970s by Burns & Porter Associates who took the concept of having a few individual quizzes in public gathering parlors and developed this into a national institution comprising upwards of 10,000 teams competing weekly in their X leagues and knock-outs. A 2009 study put the number of regular weekly XY’s in the UK at 22,445. The first attested use of the word is from 1781 and means a dandy. It later acquired a meaning of to make fun of, or to mock.

A well-known myth about the word says that in 1791 a Dublin theater owner named James Daly made a bet that he could introduce a word into the language within twenty-four hours. He then went out and hired a group of street urchins to write the word which was a nonsense word, on walls around the city of Dublin. Within a day, the word was common currency and had acquired a meaning (since no one knew what it meant, everyone thought it was some sort of test)

Some common styles of doing it are The Belgian, The Indian, Bait Bazi (Pakistani), Protmusis (Lithuanian), Music for the Masses (Australian), etc.

The most famous icon of the show is the black leather Eames Soft Pad Lounge chair designed in 1969, in which the contestants sit, lit by a solitary spotlight in an otherwise dark studio. The inspiration for this was the interrogations faced by the show's creator, Bill Wright, as a POW in World War II. The original black chair was given to Magnus Magnusson as a souvenir when he retired from the show. Which show?
