XY was developed in the late 1970s by Burns & Porter Associates who took the concept of having a few individual quizzes in public gathering parlors and developed this into a national institution comprising upwards of 10,000 teams competing weekly in their X leagues and knock-outs. A 2009 study put the number of regular weekly XY’s in the UK at 22,445. Guinness Book of Records lists the "Quiz for Life", held at the Flanders Expo Halls in Ghent, Belgium, on 11 December 2010 with 2,280 participants the largest XY of all time.

The first attested use of the word is from 1781 and means a dandy. It later acquired a meaning of to make fun of, or to mock.

A well-known myth about the word says that in 1791 a Dublin theater owner named James Daly made a bet that he could introduce a word into the language within twenty-four hours. He then went out and hired a group of street urchins to write the word which was a nonsense word, on walls around the city of Dublin. Within a day, the word was common currency and had acquired a meaning (since no one knew what it meant, everyone thought it was some sort of test)
