Community Service –

Covers For Kids (CFK)

Melanie Reimann 1st VP - Community Service

The Covers for Kids Challenge deadline has been moved to December 2020. So, that gives us three more months to create a quilt for a child using the “challenge” fabrics. If you want to participate, please email Rhonda Anderson ([email protected]) to receive a challenge packet by mail. Additional information can be found on page 8 of this newsletter. Thank you to everyone who has been working on CFK projects at home this spring. Hopefully, we will be able to provide lots of quilts for Ronald McDonald House, the Vogel Alcove, and The Dallas Advocacy Center in the future. Here are some photos of quilts that were recently donated or completed by our group.

Nominating Committee

Ann West, Happy Johns,

Martha Smith, and Sharon Smith

The May newsletter included the slate of new officers and their bios for the 2020-2021 year. The Nominating Committee wants the guild members to know that due to the unusual circumstances of this pandemic, voting on the slate of officers will be done differently this year. A ballot will be e-mailed out to each member the last week of May. You will be instructed to vote and return your e-mailed ballot by June 4, 2020, the meeting day. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Membership Peggy Cord

Dear lovers of all things quilty, I miss you all. Our lives are very different and I have noticed that I have lost perception of time after the initial shock wore off. During those days we have had a private Facebook page come into existence designed and managed by one of my favorite members, Kathryn Taylor. Kathryn has also volunteered to help with managing the Guild’s database. Only current members may access the Facebook page after submitting a request. Please check it out and add your projects finished, unfinished, or especially those that you would wish would disappear. The guild board has been meeting with ZOOM. It is quite fun and you get to “go into” somebody’s house. The past week or so I have been thinking of all the members I don’t see and I wonder how you all are doing. How are you all connecting with your friends in the guild? Is there a way that I could help you connect with other members?

Barely Used Juki TL-2010q Sewing Machine For Sale!

I am selling my 2018 Juki TL 2010q sewing machine (purchased June 2018 from Amazon). It has recently been fully cleaned and serviced and has only been used to quilt one 85” x 85” quilt.

I am asking only $650 (although paid $1,081). This machine has generous harp space, while still enabling twisting and turning for complex shapes for applique quilting! It also comes with both the Juki walking foot and a Janome walking foot for better visibility.

Membership Renewal Peggy Cord

Membership Renewals to Begin June 1, 2020 The guild fiscal year – and membership year – begins each year on September 1 and ends twelve months later on August 31. We begin our membership renewal drive at the beginning of June. Since our membership drive is three months long, anyone who joins the Guild as a new member on or after June 1 gets “complimentary” membership during the remaining months of the guild “year.” This also applies to former members who allowed their membership to lapse. Please take a moment to mark the age range box and also the volunteer area at the bottom. There are many ways to help the guild and you may have an idea that has not been voiced before. Last year we did not print and mail the member directory but published it on the website. We will do that again this year. It is very, very helpful for the website manager to be able to download all the member information at one time! Please complete your membership form and remit payment by September 1, 2020. To do a “hard copy” renewal, use the form included on page 7 of this newsletter and mail it in with your dues by September 1, 2020. To do an easy-peasey online renewal (with PayPal!) on or after June 1, 2020, go to the guild website at www.quiltersguildofdallas.org and click on the “membership” tab in the horizontal menu.

Due to the uncertain times, if you are not a Guild Board member and plan to submit an article for the next Guild newsletter, please let me know. I will email you the deadline. Tiny Treasures New quilting tools are fun to share with quilting friends. Remember how they oohed and ahhed when you trotted out your new pincushion, pretty scissors, sewing machine, or other gadget at the last retreat? Well we have nothing on the stitchers from the 18th and 19th centuries. Those ladies may not have had the internet or cell phones, but they had the coolest tools for needlework! Not only were they fun to use, but they also showed a woman’s social status - sort of the way flashy jewelry says the same thing today.

In the past few years the Museum of Texas Tech University has received hundreds of beautiful needlework tools and toolboxes, mostly collected by a few needle workers, some of whom quilt. In preparation for the objects to be locked down in exhibit cases, the museum team did a video of the objects, showing how they worked and showing little details in the needlework likely missed in an exhibit case. This video is available on-line at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/museumttu/programs/come-see.php Although the video doesn’t lead with quilts, quilters could use the tools today, well if we had them. So when you have a bit of time, grab your favorite beverage and take a peek. When it is able to open again, the Museum plans an exhibit of these and other objects, “Sumptuous Stitches and Tiny Treasures.” This major exhibit will include over 750 objects, the majority of which are needlework tools. A full color catalog of the objects will be available for sale online. For the updated exhibit schedule and how to order the exhibition catalog online check the Museum’s website at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/museumttu/exhibitions/2020/SumptuousStitches.php or contact the curator at [email protected]
