CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:Please read all instructions carefully before beginning. ¼" seam allowance is included in measurements and all strips are cut across the width of the fabric unless noted other-wise. Label pieces and keep together until ready to sew. These instructions are based on unwashed fabrics. LOF = length of fabric.

A. Pattern #26477 – MUL 1 (border): 1. Fussy-cut four 8" x LOF border strips (refer to quilt on cover for

stripe section). B. Pattern #26478 – BEI 1 (texture): 1. Cut thirteen 41/2" strips. Sub-cut (100) 41/2" squares. 2. Cut twenty 21/2" strips. Sub-cut (320) 21/2" squares.C. Pattern #26478 – DKBLU1 (texture): 1. Cut six 21/2" strips. Join with diagonal seams and cut

two 21/2" x 601/2" and two 21/2" x 521/2" strips. 2. Cut eight 21/4" strips for binding.D-M. From each of the assorted fabrics: 1. Cut three 21/2" strips. Sub-cut eight 21/2" squares and sixteen

21/2" x 41/2" rectangles from each fabric.

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS: Corner Units:1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of four matching 21/2" squares.

Place marked square on the corner of a 41/2" B square, right sides together. Sew on the diagonal line. Trim 1/4" from the sewn line and press open. Corner unit should measure 41/2" square. Make one match-ing set of four units (Figure 1). Repeat to make twenty matching sets of corner units.

Side Units:2. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of four 21/2" B squares.

Place marked square on the end of a 21/2" x 41/2" rectangle, right sides together. Sew on the diagonal line. Trim 1/4" from the sewn line and press open. Repeat on the opposite end. Pieced rectangle unit should measure 21/2" x 41/2". Make one matching set of four units with the “angle” down to the left (Figure 2).

3. Repeat to make one matching set of four pieced angled rectangle units with the “angle” down to the right (Figure 3).

4. Join two pieced angled rectangle units as shown (Figure 4). Side unit should measure 41/2" square. Press. Make one matching set of four units.

5. Repeat steps 2-4 to make twenty matching sets of side units.

Blocks:6. Using one 4/2" B square and one set each matching side and corner

units, sew the block together (Figure 5). Pay close attention to the direction and placement of side units and corner units. Press. Block should measure 121/2" square. Make twenty blocks.

QUIlT ASSEMBly: (Refer to Figure 6 and cover quilt.)1. Arrange blocks randomly together in rows: 4 blocks across and 5 rows

down. Sew together. Press.2. Sew 21/2" x 601/2" C borders to long sides. Press. Sew 21/2" x 521/2" C

borders to the top and bottom. Press. Pieced center should measure 521/2" x 641/2".

5. Fold quilt on diagonal at one corner, right sides together. Align border strip ends, border seams at the 1/4" backstitched point and angled creases; pin in place. Stitch along crease, backstitching at 1/4" border seam (Figure 9).

6. With quilt unfolded and right side up, align 45° angle line of square ruler on seam line to check accuracy. If corner is flat and square, trim excess fabric at corner seam allowance to 1/4" (Figure 10). Press corner seam open.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to miter each corner.

FINIShING: 1. Prepare backing with vertical seam to measure 75" x 87". 2. Layer backing, batting and quilt top. Baste layers together.3. Quilt as desired. 4. Trim backing and batting even with quilt top.5. Sew 21/4" C binding strips together end to end with diagonal seams.

Press seams open. Press strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, for double-fold binding. Sew binding to quilt using your favorite method.

6. Make a label and sew to back of quilt.

Mitered Border:3. Trim border strips referring to Gerri’s tip. Center and pin border strips

in place. Start and stop seams 1/4" from corners of quilt top; backstitch to secure (Figure 7). Press seams toward quilt top.

4. Lay quilt top right side up on ironing board and fold each border end flat back on itself, right sides together, forming a 45° angle at the quilt’s corner (Figure 8). Press to form sharp crease. Repeat at each corner.

Gerri’s tip for determining the length of mitered borders:

Prior to cutting, measure the center of the quilt vertically and horizontally to determine the lengths of the outer border strips. For the American Beauty quilt, the quilt center is approximately 521/2" x 641/2" so the formula will be:

Length of quilt before border + width of borders to be added + 2"Example:641/2" + 8" + 8" + 2" = 821/2"
