cutting instructions:Please read all instructions carefully before beginning. 1/4" seam allowance is included in measurements and all strips are cut across the width of the fabric unless noted otherwise. Label pieces and keep together until ready to sew. These instructions are based on unwashed fabrics.

A. Pattern #23121 – MUL1 (stripe): 1. Cut four strips on the length of the fabric (parallel to selvage).

Center the alphabet section within each strip by cutting 13/4" on each side of the black rickrack. Strip will be approximately 71/4" wide. This is what will give the appearance of equal size squares on each side of the center stripe.

B. Pattern #23122 – MUL1 (alphabet print): 1. Cut one 61/2" strip; subcut six 61/2" squares.C. Pattern #23124 – BLA1 (gingham): 1. Cut five 27/8" squares. Cut each square diagonally in half to

yield ten half-square triangles.

D. Pattern #23124 – BLU1 (gingham): 1. Cut five 27/8" squares. Cut each square diagonally in half to

yield ten half-square triangles.E. Pattern #23124 – GRE1 (gingham): 1. Cut five 27/8" squares. Cut each square diagonally in half to

yield ten half-square triangles.G. Pattern #23125 – TUR1 (dot): 1. Cut three 21/2" strips; subcut forty-eight 21/2" squares. 2. Cut ten 11/2" strips; subcut twenty-four each 11/2" x 61/2"

rectangles and 11/2" x 81/2" rectangles. 3. Cut seven 21/4" strips for binding.H. Pattern #23126 – MUL1 (floral): 1. Cut one 61/2" strip; subcut six 61/2" squares.I. Pattern #23129 – AQU1 (calico): 1. Cut five 27/8" squares. Cut each square diagonally in half to

yield ten half-square triangles.J. Pattern #23129 – PUR1 (calico): 1. Cut five 27/8" squares. Cut each square diagonally in half to

yield ten half-square triangles.K. Pattern #23129 – RED1 (calico): 1. Cut ten 27/8" squares. Cut each square diagonally in half to

yield twenty half-square triangles.L. Pattern #20458 – CRE1 (solid): 1. Cut three 21/2" strips; subcut forty-eight 21/2" squares. 2. Cut three 27/8" strips; subcut forty 27/8" squares. Cut each

square diagonally in half to yield eighty half-square triangles. 3. Cut eight 41/2" strips; subcut thirty-one 41/2" x 81/2" rectangles.

Piecing instructions:A. Dinner Plate Blocks:1. Draw a diagonal line on the back

Fabric requirements:A. Pattern #23120 – MUL1 ............. 1 panelB. Pattern #23124 – GRE1........Fat QuarterC. Pattern #23124 – LTRED1 .....Fat EighthD. Pattern #23129 – AQU1 ..............7/8 yardBacking of choice .............................. 1 yardBatting ..........................................36" x 42" Additional supplies:Paper-backed fusible web ............... 3/4 yardClover Yo-Yo Makers both Large & Small

cutting instructions:Please read all instructions carefully before beginning. 1/4" seam allowance is included in measurements and all strips are cut across the width of the fabric unless noted otherwise. Label pieces and keep together until ready to sew. These instructions are based on unwashed fabrics.

A. Pattern #23120 – MUL1 (panel):1. Cut large, center design 201/2" x 243/4"

centering motif within area. 2. Cutting across the printed bars, cut

two 11/2" x 201/2". Cut three 11/2" strips x width of panel. Sew strips together end to end; press. Then, cut two 11/2" x 263/4".

3. Fuse a piece of paper-backed fusible web behind both alphabet sections of the panel so that web covers motifs by at least 1". On right side of fabric, use a pen to lightly trace shape of both motifs keeping line approxi-mately 1/2" away. Refer to photo.

Keeping web paper in place, cut motifs from panel along drawn line.

B. Pattern #23124 – GRE1 (gingham): 1. Use small Clover Yo-Yo Maker to

make four yo-yo’s. If not using tool, cut four 31/2" circles from fabric.

C. Pattern #23124 – LTRED1 (gingham): 1. Use large Clover Yo-Yo Maker to

make four yo-yo’s. If not using tool, cut four 4" circles from fabric.

D. Pattern #23129 – AQU1 (calico):1. Cut two 41/2" x 221/2" strips and two

41/2" x 343/4" strips. 2. Cut four 21/4" strips for binding.

Page 4: Quilt design and piecing by Cyndi Hershey Machine quilted ... Quilt Patterns... · 2. If quilting the quilt yourself, layer quilt top, batting and backing. Baste layers together.

Piecing & assembly instructions:1. Sew one (A) 11/2" x 201/2" strip to top and bottom of center

panel motif. Press toward (A) strips. Sew one (A) 11/2" x 263/4" strip to both sides of panel motif; press.

2. Sew one (D) 41/2" x 221/2" strip to top and bottom of quilt. Press toward (D) strips. Sew one (D) 41/2" x 343/4" strip to both sides of quilt; press.

3. Remove paper from fusible web-backed alphabet motifs. Center and press one to top and bottom borders.

4. Sample quilt was machine appliquéd through all layers which provided quilting as well. To do the same, layer quilt top with thin batting and backing. Stable, polyester quilt fleece, Ther-more® (by Hobbs) or equivalent is suggested. Cotton batting tends to be too dense for this technique. Be sure to pin well!

5. First, anchor quilt by quilting around inner edges of small, panel blocks as well as along inside and outside of patchwork border.

Then, quilt outer border as desired. The border of sample quilt was stitched with lines perpendicular to the quilt edges. These lines matched every other patchwork piece of the inner border. Do not quilt through the fused alphabet motifs.

6. Set sewing machine with a slightly open, narrow zigzag stitch and contrasting thread. Slowly stitch around alphabet motifs taking care that stitching covers the raw edge of the motifs.

7. Use the same stitching technique to stitch around the inner edges (not along patchwork border) of small, panel blocks. Be sure to cover your anchor stitching.

8. If not using yo-yo maker, use (B) and (C) circles to make yo-yo’s using your preferred method. Layer yo-yo’s as shown and stitch to intersections of blocks.

9. Use (D) 21/2" strips to make binding and sew to quilt using your preferred method.

10. Be sure to add a hanging sleeve to the back of quilt!
