Mandy Burford enters her seventh season as the head coach of the Samford softball team. Burford was promoted to head coach in 2012 after serving as an assistant coach in 2011. The 2017 team produced a second-straight appearance in the Southern
Conference Tournament championship game. After falling in the first round to Mercer, Samford reeled off three-straight wins over Chattanooga, UNCG and Mercer to reach the title game for the second-straight season. After the tournament, Samford’s Grey Adams, Madison Couch, Shelby Maze and Kelsey Royalty were named to the All-Tournament team.
Maze, the 2017 team’s center fielder, set a school record and led the nation with 90 hits. She also led the SoCon in batting with an impressive. 423 average. Maze was named first team All-SoCon and third team NFCA All-Region at the conclusion of the season. Maze was joined on the first team All-SoCon squad by teammates Couch and
catcher Abby Sweeney. Additionally, infielder Whitney Hinton was named to the SoCon’s All-Freshman team. Burford, 2016 SoCon Coach of the Year, took the Bulldogs to new heights in 2016 as she led the program to its first ever NCAA Championship Tournament appearance with a trip to the Tuscaloosa Regional and eventually ended the season with a school record 40 wins. Samford recieved the Southern Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after the team had secured its first ever SoCon Tournament Championship as well as winning the SoCon regular season title with a 15-3 SoCon record. The Bulldogs also garnered their first ever SoCon Player of the Year and SoCon Pitcher of the Year awards thanks to outstanding play from outfielder Megan Dowdy and pitcher Mollie Hanson. Dowdy went on to become the first Samford softball player to earn a spot on the NFCA All-Region First Team in the South Region, which is arguably the toughest region in the country. Hanson was tabbed All-Region Third Team along with third baseman Callie Brister. Dowdy, Hanson and Brister were also named first team All-SoCon in 2016. Caitlin Bice, Abbie Miranda, Lexie Higgins and Maze were named second team All-SoCon that season. In 2015, Burford guided the Bulldogs to a 33-22, 11-7 SoCon record and finished as SoCon runner ups in the regular season. Samford tallied seven SoCon All-Conference selections which included 2015 Freshman of the Year Shelby Maze. Burford also coached junior outfielder Megan Dowdy who recieved the Bulldogs first ever NFCA All-Region Award after making the third team. Burford guided the Samford softball program to its’ most successful season in the program’s 28 year history in 2014 when the team won the most games ever after a 38-18 season. The wins record was not the only one to be broken that season as multiple fell behind a very talented Bulldog squad. Samford also racked up numerous individual accolades by the years end. At the end of the 2013 season, Burford guided the team to one of the most successful conference tournament runs in Samford history. The ninth-seeded Bulldogs advanced all the way to the SoCon semifinals, outscoring their first four opponents 19-3. Sophomore pitcher Shelby Scott and senior outfielder Kayla Shaffer were both named to the All-Tournament team. Samford is the only ninth-seed in SoCon history to advance to the semifinals. During the 2013 season, Samford was the only team in the conference to throw two no-hitters, as Mollie Hanson downed UNCG on March 9 before Shelby Scott did the same to Elon on April 20. Both pitchers were named SoCon Pitcher of the Week following their performances and they were the first no-hitters at Samford since 2006. The Bulldogs have earned a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team in every season under Burford as well, with Madison Dickey in 2012, Megan Dowdy in 2013, Grey Adams 2014, Karsin Spinks and Shelby Maze (Freshman of the Year)in 2015 along with Kelsey Royalty and Hannah Trombley in 2016, and Whitney Hinton in 2017. Prior to coming to Samford, Burford spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Birmingham-Southern. At BSC, Burford helped lead the Panthers to a combined record of 57-14 in her two seasons on the coaching staff. In 2009, BSC posted an

MEGAN DOWDYASSISTANT COACH
Megan Dowdy enters her sec-ond season as assistant coach for the Bulldogs as she joined the program on August 20,
2016 after a successful playing career at Samord. Dowdy started four years in the outfield for the Bulldogs from 2013-2016 and ended her career as one of the
most decorated players to have ever come up through the pro-gram. The three-time All-SoCon First Team selection holds five career batting titles at the university and will look to translate the success she had during her playing career to her new posi-tion as an assistant coach this upcoming season. The 2016 SoCon Player of the Year will be responsible for assisting with all hitting and offensive strategy for the Bulldogs, specializing in the short game aspect of the sport, and will be tabbed with being the program’s recruiting coordinator. “Megan has a true love for the game, but also for Samford. She will be a great ambassador for not only the program but also for the school.” Head Coach Mandy Burford exclaimed. “She was also one of the most decorated players to ever come through the program. “The amount of accolades she racked up during her playing career has set the bar very high for any player to beat. She will be directly involved with the hitting, outfield, base running, and will immediately hit the recruiting trail for us.” The Fairhope, Alabama native was Samford’s first ever NFCA All-Region selection when she was awarded a spot on the NFCA South Region Third Team her junior year and upped that her senior year to be named an NFCA All-South Region First Team selection alongside a pair of highly regarded SEC stand-outs in Elantra Cox (Ole Miss) and Haylie McCleney (Alabama). “Megan’s graduating class played an integral part of the success we accomplished last season. They set the standard for years to come.” Burford conintued. “Having Megan stay involved and move her success from the field to the coaching box will be special to everyone in the program.” Samford, 40-20 overall record in 2016, is coming off of another historic season where the team reached the NCAA Championship Tournament after earning the SoCon’s automatic bid which sent the team to the Tuscaloosa Regional. The post-season appearance was the first in the program’s history along with winning the SoCon regular season and tournament titles.
ABBY ADAMSASSISTANT COACH
Abby Adams enters her first season as a full-time assistant coach on the Samford softball staff.
In her new position, Adams will be in charge of the defense, and assist with instructing the team’s hitters. “I am very excited to move Abby Adams from volunteer assistant
into the full-time assistant role,” Burford said. “She has a true love for the game and a passion for teaching. She hates to lose more than she loves to win and I am thrilled to have her take over as our defensive coach. She was one of the best defensive players to put on a Samford jersey and was part of the coach-ing staff that won the regular season and SoCon Tournament title back in 2016. She is a person who has shown the ability to transfer her success as a player to teaching as a coach.” Adams served as a volunteer assistant coach at Samford during the 2017 season. During the season, she managed the infield and assisted with hitting instruction. In addition to her coaching duties, she also assisted with all aspects of team travel. During the 2016 Southern Conference Championship season, Adams worked as a student assistant coach. “I would like to thank Coach Burford, Mr. (Martin) Newton and Samford University for the opportunity to coach at my alma mater,” Adams said. “Coach Mandy played a huge part in mak-ing me a competitive college athlete and helped shape me into the person that I am today and I am excited to continue to learn from her as a coach.” Adams played at Samford from 2012 to 2015. She was named second team All-SoCon as both a junior and senior. In 2014, she led the team in RBI (37), home runs (14) and doubles (9). “I look forward to investing in the program that has given me so much and to joining a coaching staff that strives for excellence and competitiveness,” Adams said. “I will work hard to keeping Samford softball at the top of the SoCon year in and year out and will do my very best to help win another championship.” Adams holds school single-season records for home runs (14) and runs scored (47). For her career, she ranks third in home runs (25) and fourth in games played (219).
